I have a few questions about fast charging. You can explain using chemistry/physics jargon if you wish as I do understand some parts. So to my understanding, fast charging is basically allowing from electrons to be pushed into the battery (or onto the lithium to convert them to ions so they hold a negative charge). Through programming (using AOKP rom), the device will allow more current or electrons to run through the device and onto the battery (electrodes to be more exact)? If that is the case, wouldn't this cause the battery to be damaged as the chemical reaction is sped up (ie other chemical reactions with the lithium causing them to be neutral or damaging the electrodes)? I've read around that fast charging on the galaxy nexus (hence the post here) is actually safe. Is that because the programmers increased the current above the original but to a point where there is insignificant damage? This is what I understood from some googling.
Another question is that this requires special kernels (or custom kernels) or reprogramming to work. However, AOKP is a ROM where it allows you to have the fast charge option with the original kernel. Does it mean the programming in AOKP is sufficient or do I need to switch a ROM? In either case, does franco's kernel support this option? Or is it the ROM that can control the fast charging without the kernel? Either way I'm currently using franco.
It doesn't change anything. This phone has 2 charge modes, AC charging at 1 amp and usb charging at 0.5 amps. That just enables AC 1 amp charging on a usb plug that can handle it, nothing more. Its not changing any characteristic with charging.

And to reiterate...
All it does is trick your phone into thinking it's plugged into the stock AC charger.
Nothing more. So it's still only pulling how much (from usb) as it normally would from an AC charger.

I plug my phone to my laptop. When I'm not plugged-in, it drains my laptop battery. This damages my laptop battery. I've replaced two already.

Its a normal usb function of your pc. anything you plug into your usb port will draw current from your laptop battery. batteries are designed to source current. that is their job.

If you plug the phone into a 2 amp charger, it will still charge at 1 amp.

I was able to charge my sgs2 yesterday at work through the usb port. It might be the phone, or maybe the usb port you are trying to use doesn't have enough juice to charge the phone? have you tried another usb port on the computer?

USB supplies max 500mA. Is probably half what the wall charger is giving you. Nexus S is only 750. My guess gsII is 1000 (1A). iPad charger is 2A.
Edit: no a higher power one than the stock charger won't charge the phone faster in a noticeable way. Charging circuits in remotely modern phones limit current to that safe max. If they don't you're probably risking damaging your phone.

I understand that the USB on the computer is weaker. I was surprised to see that when the phone was connected to the computer, screen on, and streaming music that my battery was actually reducing slowly. I would expect the opposite and this behavior seems abnormal.

that's exactly the reason why in car i use the 2A charger (2000 mAh), and in house i use 1000 mAh wall charger
if i leave it at the computer USB charging, i've to keep it iddle for it to charge after like... 4+ hours
that's usually what i do at the work place, so i keep the battery topped up, for when i need to jump back in the road
as long as you have WiFi on, or 3G/4G on, or if the CPU is in high activity, you'll never see the charge ever reaching the battery.
i always keep a spare wall charger at the office as well for times when i need a quick charge

My issue is a little different but decided against another thread. My phone will not charge with any other cable. Has to be pluged in to oem cable. I left it all night on my old phones charger and woke up with it almost dead. Plugged into oem it just charges super slow. Should i take it back?

Does the other micro USB cable work with other devices? If not, might be a defective cable.
On a side note, who prefers to charge via 500mah vs 1A? I have been charging my phone since day one using my printer, as well as my old Iphone. My battery performance is great! +24 hours on a single charge with moderate browsing 50/50 wifi and 4g. I typically enable the "power save" feature with minimal brightness and 15 sec screen timeout.

[Q] Charging problem
I have an issue that has popped up today. When charging through PC, the phone (not battery) is getting pretty hot and losing charge. I'm not sure what could be causing it. I stopped all extra processes and turned off the screen. This is not occurring when the phone is off.
Is it me or does this thing not charge while in use? I'm using the a/c adapter btw
It works for me when hooked up to my laptop. It goes slower depending on how many resources are being used. My G1 wouldn't charge while navigation was on for instance and my Nexus S barely charged at all while I was navigating.

All I'm doing it texting and surfing. I' trying to charge it before I board my 8 hour flight to Europe. I have two movies on here I want to watch and the charge has only gone down since I plugged it in. It just slows down the rate. I'm starting to think my Galaxy Nexus is a dud. I barely get 9 hours with light use. My brightness is always below halfway.

Are you using the AC charger that came with the phone or an old one/third party? You could be running into the same issue as the guy with the car charger(see below). Not all microusb chargers are created equally.

Make sure the car charger you're using is at least a 1AMP charger. Anything less than that and the phone will use a USB charging mode. You can see the ampage of a particular charger on the bottom/backside. Its usually in very small print but its there.
BTW the Galaxy Nexus can actually run off wall paper alone(i.e. no battery inserted) on a 2.1AMP charger that comes with most tablets these days. I use my Galaxy Tab charger for it!

As far as the AC charger, the one that the phone came with i had issues charging, but i went back to a black berry charger i bought as a replacement for my nexus one, and i can be playing cordy on that and the battery stays charged.
I have a verizon charger leftover from my Droid 1 and I drove across the country a few days ago using navigation 100% of the trip. I also had a few hours of conversation and regularly streamed podcasts and music. I did all of this with the extended battery at a full charge always. The charger was never even noticeably warm. The trip took 3 days and I didn't charge over night so each day started below a full charge.
I suspect you have a problem with one of three things. Either the phone has a bad charging component, your battery is defective or your charger has less output than it claims.

Most USB chargers are only 500mA. Which isn't a lot considering it takes 2100mA just to keep it on.

It's happening again, I can't use this thing while charging. I put it in airplane mode and it still dies while I'm using it. It doesn't shutdown either, it just cuts off. It's plugged into the wall btw.

Yeah I did. I've never had this issue with any phone that I've owned.
make sure it's charging in 'AC Mode' and put a chunk of dry ice underneath it w/ some protection in between.

If you did, then you'd realize its less likely an issue with your phone and more likely you're using a charger that doesn't push enough power to the phone.

Its the one that came with the phone, 1A 500V, pretty standard these days.
A few comments:
All USB cables are not alike. Not all transmit the proper power. So with your AC adapter, you might try other USB cables to have the phone see it as "AC" and not "USB".
The Verizon car charger does work properly with the Galaxy Nexus, and is seen as "AC" power. Interestingly, if you use the 2nd USB port, even with a cable that does function correctly, it is still seen as "USB" and not "AC". So only the primary connection there will provide full power.
I'm also still looking for a car charger, other than Verizon's, that will be seen as "AC" - I'd get the Verizon one, but don't like the "curly" cord, since I'm duct taping it across my dash, and it's a lot more bulky than a regular straight cord.

Also, considering the fact the battery is only 1750mah that mean the device would only stay on for around 45 minutes before being fully discharged if it wasn't plugged in.

How does a USB cable "not transmit the proper power?" What is "proper power" as opposed to "improper power?" Power goes through the RED wire in the USB cable. That's a USB spec. Either it carries current or it does not.
Some devices need to see 2 USB pins to be jumpered in order to set charge on (the Galaxy Tablet is notorious for this which is why you can buy a special cable adapter to create this jumpered charger pin if you are not using their "special" charger. What I meant is that using the official Verizon car charger, I connected my Galaxy Nexus with the built-in micro USB connector, and my phone showed it to be charging, and the source recognized as "AC". I then tried connecting it using a couple of different cables, using the secondary USB slot on the Verizon charger:
When I used the cable from my wife's LG Env Touch, my Galaxy Nexus didn't show it as charging at all. It apparently wasn't receiving enough to even be recognized as "USB" charging.
When I used the cable that came with my Galaxy Nexus, plugged into the same USB port on the Verizon charger, my phone showed it being charged, but with the source shown as "USB".
So the type of cable will impact whether or not a given adapter will even charge the phone. And the charger itself also has an impact.
To get the phone to charge, and the source recognized as "AC" you are going to need the right charger and cable. As I said, the Verizon charger, using the built-in cable, works fine.
Hello I was wondering if there is a mod to have usb fast charge when plugged into the comp. I just came from a Inc and there was a mod flashable through cwm. it was very nice. it charged the phone just as fast as an outlet, if not faster. is there a mod?

the developer behind it for the htc Inc was chad0989
. he made the incredikernels and the incredicontrol app. tried to use incredicontrol app just for fast charging but didnt work since the kernel doesnt support HAVS or SVS. Im on Francos btw

Would there be a way to selectively trigger AC mode as opposed to USB mode?
just asked this in the IRC chan and few devs said doing this could mess up your computer system. point of the hack would be to trick the cheap car chargers into giving u the full charge, not the computer.

Not many motherboards have USB ports capable of supplying current in excess of the spec 500mA.
Research modding your (car?) Charger to be detected as AC charger instead of USB.

What about a mod that allows the 3 pogo pins to receive more than 500mA(recognized as USB)? That seems ridiculously low and is far more relevant/needed. If you want to charge through the pogo pins you are just SOL.

I haven't seen a device that can't do 1A over USB in like a decade.
Hell, even non-PCs have no problems with it. I've done it off a Wii before just for fun.
A lot of newer motherboards can even do 2A over USB (to charge iPads). Most ASUS boards in the past 2-3 years have this as an advertised feature (asus ai charger).
Very interested in this actually. Not so much for USB/AC charging on a computer, but for MHL AC charging.
With the current MHL adapters (even when plugged into an AC outlet), the Gnex reports USB charging. To make maters worse, the screen does not shut off on the Gnex. After an hour or two your battery will die. 500ma is just not enough.
The MHL spec says that 500ma is the charging spec. However, I tweeted with Tim Wong:

He is the president of the MHL association and he said 500MA is the minimum, not the maximum. My quess is that the Gnex won't try to draw more than 500MA since the data pins can't be shorted on the MHL connector.
I think the MHL adapter will provide for more current, just like most laptops and desktops.
With this mod, it would be nice to tell the Gnex to AC charge. Tim suggest that the phone should not draw more than safely required so long as the voltage doesn't drop on the MHL adapter/MHL tv.
I think the Gnex, by design looks for the shorted data pins and doesn't try to push the envelope as far as monitoring the voltage drop on a USB detected power source.
I recall reading about some smoking/dead phones from fast charging mods. Thanks but no thanks.

I came at this problem from a different angle and accidentally found a solution for you. I have an iPad and it wouldnt charge from my PC so did some research and came up with this:

Its a free driver from asus that increases the max amp on USB bus. Supports most mobos and works awesome on my PC and dell laptop, I can now charge the iPad on there.
It also has the benefit of fast charging of my Nexus. Double win.

If you look at battery stats does it say charging (AC) or Charging (USB)

It's slower Compered to the Same Charger.
And it says AC too.
V=I*R where V is voltage, I is current and R is resistance. The charger will hold voltage constant at 5 V for USB.
A longer cable increases the resistance of the circuit. This reduces the current, and increases the charge time.

Strange that a 1.5 A charger ended up slower.
I would say 1-2 meter cable is about the longest I would use for my USB chargers. For my tablet I use a 1 meter cable. Same for my phone (but it is not the same phone you have).

How can I know how much output the charger really gives?

can anyone know when you charge the phone in less then 80% in will charge normally but beyond it, it wil slows the charging down...that will make charging longer...i check this and it only happen in HTC phone...

I love @ktoonsez kernel I also LOVE his fast charging option. Was using schools computer to charge and was charging at 900 mA love it.
Got tired of going through the app to toggle this. So i made a widget that can be placed on the home screen or the lock screen. Im sorry, the image is hideous. xD wasnt too sure of what to use as an image so bear with me xD
Just install the APK then either on your home screen or your lock screen add a widget and select Fast Charge Toggle. Done. Will prolly work on other kernels with fast charging option but only tested on @ktoonsez kernel
From almost totally dead, it takes me about two hours for a full charge with normal charging.
I've never bothered with tweaking charging settings. How much faster would fast charging accomplish the same thing?
Like the idea, but what does fast charging do ultimately to you're overall battery life and health long-term?

The fast charging kernel tweaks are only for USB devices. Like from a computer, stereo unit, cigarette lighter. Not from the wall outlet.

It has no side effect on the battery. The stock charger has I think like 2a charging power, most computers have only 500mA. Fast charging simply tricks the kernel into thinking it's plugged into a wall outlet and charges at the full power available. The only side affect is that it could ruin the USB port. However after two years of using it I have never seen any issues myself nor have I read any.

Not my experience. I have to desagree. I always use fast charge and using a wall outlet works better that any other mentioned before. Im not a developer, just a happy user. But works different for me. I can tell what are you saying is not always true for all users.

According to what I personally saw in the source code and what @ktoonsez said, the fast charging gets ignored when it's an ac charger. Just going off of source code and what the code actually does. Might just be a placebo effect on your end all in all tho fast charging sure is the best thing since sliced bread xD

Why is it that when I charge and use off the charger, my phone gets hot quick. I revoke SU permissions and reboot then my phone is cool so am I doing something wrong. I'm on virginrom2.3

When superuser asks permission and I grant it, the phone charges fast, but whether its charging or not, it gets hot very quickly

I have no idea. Nothing is happening until you click on the widget then it executes the code and dies right away. Get a task manager (preferably SystemTuner) and see whats eating your CPU.

I have a car charger that has a spare USB plug on it. If I use the actual car charger it charges as normal, but when I plug in the white USB cord that came with the phone into the same car charger it definitely charges almost twice as fast. Living proof. I was on a road trip using GPS and LTE while streaming music. While on the car charger it would almost not charge at all, just supplement enough to not drop in percentage. Then, when I switch to the other USB it charges up no problem.. Really works.

First off, Thank you for making this and sharing it to the community. I have been looking for something just like this. Comes in very handy.
I don't know if you update this anymore, but I was wondering if you could make a choice for different icons for the widget. If not, no big deal, the icon is just a little too cartoon-y for me.

I just googled "maximum usb milliamp output from a standard computer usb port" and to my
surprise I must have found at least 25 links which I read that deals with this subject.
And all of them specifically point out that a normal laptop or desktop computer's usb port puts
out a maximum of 500 milliamps unless someone has some special usb pci/pcie card installed
inside their home computers, I never seen any that do but it is possible that such a card exists.
So this mod would really not do anything at all, it would not charge faster and it could not hurt
the usb ports of any computer since it cannot change the max. milliamp output of the usb port.
Now if we had some kind of special program which we install in our computers to allow the usb
ports to put out 2amps (2000 milliamps) then it would charge just as fast as our wall AC chargers do.
But modifying anything inside our phones cannot change the fact that it's the computer and it's usb
ports which determines what the maximum amount of milliamps that it can output.
Look at it this way, if you have a 5 gallon gas can you cannot pour 10 gallons of gasoline out of it.

The maker of this (ktoonsez) stated this in his thread. However, a lot of computers (newer ones) do have higher power outputs to power things like external hard drives, cooling fans... etc. For instance, mine, when paired with the fast charging mod, outputs 700ma but without, stays at 500ma. So while you are correct, there are a lot of computers (especially newer) that do have huger output ratings. This is clearly seen when my external hard drive won't work on my grandfather's dinosaur computer (even his new printer has issues). But plugged into my laptop, it's has no problem.
Also, I believe USB 3.0 has a 1amp output.

You know what, you are just about right, I just did some more googling and found
that the usb 3.0 ports on newer computers do have a greater output than 500milliamps.
They have a maximum of 900milliamps, still no where near the 2000milliamp which
the home charger puts out, but it's close to double of the standard usb 2.0 ports.
I read that many newer computers including mine has a dedicated 3.0 port which stays awake
even if we turn the computer off & it continues charging whatever is plugged into the 3.0 port.
So 900milliamps is a lot better than 500milliamps when comparing usb 2.0 to 3.0 however
current is current, the phone itself cannot distinguish between a 500milliamp or 900milliamp
charging rate, if it gets 900ma it will charge a lot faster than if it only gets 500 milliamps.
All cell phones have a safety feature built into their circuitry which prevents us from charging
the phone at a higher rate than what Samsung specifies by plugging it into a charger which puts
out more than 2amps, if the phone did not have that circuitry it would dramatically shorten the life
of the battery.
That's why Samsung ships 2amp home chargers with their phones and not a 2.5 or a 3amp one.
If this mod which is being discussed here defeats the safety feature in the phone's circuitry which
prevents it from being charged too fast then I would highly advise against installing or using it.
The only time a higher rated battery charger should be used is if we have an extended battery
which was rated at let's say 4200milliamps in which case a 3-4 amp charger would be best.

It doesn't defeat the security of built in kernel protection. Androids own API has a way to detect if the plug is wall charger or USB. The mod simply tells android OS that the USB charger is an AC charger and to not limit charging to USB levels. That's why USB doesn't work when the mod is enabled. It's no way harmful to the device. Been using it since I've gotten my phone and even back on my s3.

Okay, see what you mean.
Did you know that there are 3 or 4 free apps at the playstore which display the amount of mA
the phone is being charged with at any given time, it also displays the maximum mA that the
