[Q] I Lost My Apps

I have recently rooted my phone using the Unrevoked3 method, and have loaded up the Dark Cocoa III rom. After doing this the rom worked great but I lost access to all the apps availabe on the stock rom. Is there any way I can unlock access to the SD card so I can use the already downloaded applications?

I will take this to mean that you did not create a nandroid backup of your initial setup prior to flash Dark Cocoa III. Having said that, is there a folder on your SD card associated with Dark Cocoa? Sometimes, a folder is created on your card when you flash a custom rom that contains the Sprint apps and other stuff that were removed by the developer.

What do you mean when you say "unlock access to the SD card"? Can you not use a file manager like Astro, ES Explorer or preferably, Root Explorer to access the files and folders on your card?

Idk if there is anything wrong. What u should do is go download "sprint lover" Rom. This Rom has everything stock. After u download it follow the flashing directions in that OP. after flashing and booting into the Rom, download Titanium Backup. Backup the stock original roms that u want (back up system apps). After it backs up, Nandroid back to your desired Rom. Download titanium again and restore your system apps that u backed up before hand... this should get u back in the game buddy!
Also any stock based Rom will have the original sprint apps unless noted otherwise

So you flashed the new ROM and didn't do a nandroid backup or use titanium to backup user apps? Just trying to understand what process you went through to get your new ROM.
Like mentioned most sense ROMs that remove apps create a folder on your sd card with removed apps so you can reinstall them if you want.
Also, you don't need to unlock anything to get access to your sd card, just need a file explorer like Astro or Root Explorer (I recommend having both).

[Q] CWM Backup/Restore Question

Is there a safe way to rename the backups we make in CWM ? It currently labels them as "2011-05-22.17.55.36" depending on date/time .... I wanna be able to rename it so I know what is actually on that particular backup ; such as "SRF-1.1.1" "UrbanFury" , etc. When I renamed them before and then tried to restore , it wouldn't work. Anyone find a solution to this ?

use rom manager to rename, or just rename the directory in /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/

That's what I have already done in the past , and when I tried to restore my back-up it wouldn't work ...was wondering if anyone else had actually renamed their backups and then successfully restored them. Maybe the way I was renaming them was wrong ? I need to leave spaces between words ? I need to include date/time format ?

I haven't done it before... but try changing to the 2 in 2011 to a letter. Sfr = s urban fury = u... see if it works.

Sounds Good = I hadn't tried that option yet.....now I gotta make another backup before I try renaming my last backup....LOL

the directory name doesnt matter at all... just dont leave any space, you may need to regenerate nandroid.md5 i dont know.. but if so its easy enough
in a shell goto your new backup directory

BTW i have a script to make and restore nandroid backups.. not using the builtin cwm functions, useful for installs and i guess maybe your situation of naming it whatever you want..

If you back it up in CWM and then boot up and open Rom Manager you can click manage, hold down the backup you want to edit and choose rename. It works just fine, this is how I keep track of my backups.

Ok I'm currently made a nandroid backup with cwn 3.0.0.6 and I'm trying to edit the name of my nandroid backup...in Rom manager, it wants me to flash clockwork recovery again...should I flash it or is that an error...I'm on srf 1.1.1 rite now

It won't actually flash it, choose flash and epic, and choose 3.x

Yea, its meant to be run from recovery in install scripts, but could be run from a shell... it has to be in recovery to do the system partition.. suppose the backup can be run from a shell regardless though...

I don't believe there should be any spaces. Try underscores: __ .

can I rename like you are suggesting (Bonsai411.6.1.2011) by connecting to my PC or will this only work via ROM Manager ?

I use es file explore and I just rename it to what ever the rom name is. For example I backup bonsai 4.1.1 and I named it bonsai. I was able to restore it with no problem. I also backed up marcusant rom and just renamed it gingerbread and I was able to restore with no issues. Hope this helps

OK - I tried your suggestion to rename but I did it on the computer ( don't have much experience with ROM Manager since I've always been told it don't really work on our Epic phone ) .... IT WORKED !!! I just changed the 2011 to UrbanFury and SRF and did restore with No Problemas ( I musta left spaces the first times I tried renaming ) ... so the moral of the lesson is - NO SPACES

I have an additional CWM backup/restore question. Does this back up apps installed on the SD card too, as well as their data? I don't don't know whether or not it matters, but I have CWM 3.0.2.5 and the Swiss Cheese ROM.

No your SD card is seperate storage and can be backed up on a computer.

It doesn't back up the actuall apps, you would need another app for that
like File expert or titanium back up or any other of the multitude of apps out there that do that

[Q] HTC Evo 4G

Ok so I'm new to androids completly. Was looking to root my new phone. Let me start off by saying I'm in Japan and have the HTC Evo 4G. I was attempting to use unrevoked but seem to be stuck at how to get to the hboot. I just updated to 2.3.4 and when I power off my phone then hit volume down and power button to gain access to hboot it simply turns the phone back on. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Head over the the revolutionary.io site, you should be good to go. You have to use that method to root for gingerbread on the evo.

And turn off fast boot in settings/applications and then try to boot into hboot I think thats where it is I'm not sure I haven't been on sense in a while I'm not even sure if a stock ROM has it but look there to boot into hboot.

Take out the battery, put it back in, hold volume down + power key for 3-5 seconds to get into bootloader. Theres a youtube video, can't remember what its called, but it shows step by step on how to root through Revolutionary. Very easy. Took me like 5 min to root

Ok so my phone states it's S-off but I have DLed some things like titanium backup, adfree and when I go to use them it says unable to gain root access??

the recovery should be a PC36IMG.zip you flash that in hboot just make sure its on the root of your sdcard not in any folders then when you go to hboot it will find the update just except it.
The su apk should be a flashable zip just boot to recovery and wipe cache and dalvik cache then go to flash zip and choose that zip and flash it then reboot.
If this is your first time in recovery before you do anything make a nandroid backup this will backup everything in case anything goes wrong you can restore the backup and your phone will be just the way it was when you made the backup.

Ok got it all figured out. To be honest you had me lost and I almost made another noob post but I got it now. Figured out the whole flash to SD card deal. I am 100% rooted now. Now for a ROM

I downloaded the synergy rom and it deleted my carrier email app. Do all roms do this?? I'll say it again here, I'm in japan so might be a little different from the states. Anybody know how I could get it back using this rom?? Or a good rom to use that won't delete this app.

What happens is when you flash a rom, its a whole new phone basically [os] so it comes packaged with its own apps, themes. What you can do is:
- go into recovery, backup your current rom
- restore your initial backup
- use / download es file explorer [free] from the market
- enable su permissions, then navigate to /system/app and copy it to your sd card
- go back to recovery, restore the synergy backup
- once booted, install the app from the sd card
or if it was backed up, open titanium backup, restore the app and data.

Thanks for the help teh roxxorz. I got the mail thing figured out. Worked with es file but didn't work to well with titanium backup. Took some trial and error to find all the files needed cuz the paste the whole folder didn't work. Having other issues finding the contacts and getting force closes, so I decided to just not use that rom. On to finding another good one that works.

So I tried miui and that didn't work as well. Couldn't get the mail to work at all on that rom. Anybody happen to be in Japan and using this phone and could suggest a good rom to use that they have their au email and contacts moved over on, and have minimal issues?

what that file essentially did was revert the recovery to stock. and it was a script used by crossix for his sdcard swap mod i believe.
ive never had any issue with that script but ive never used the sdcard swap mod so thats probably why. so long as your bootloader is unlocked....even if your recovery gets overwritten just flash it again in fastboot. but if youve never used that mod id say your safe man.

you got it boss. what people have been messing up is relocking their bootloaders and panicking and somehow screwing their recovery image and all sorts of amazing jazz lol.
if cwm gets overwritten u know its that file...delete it. boot into fastboot and flash cwm again...easy peasy.
the biggest thing to remember is Keep your bootloader unlocked! the only way to lock it is to reflash a stock rom that "updates" the bootloader. which is why i told everyone from day one of the unlock DONT REFLASH STOCK...unless u know what your doing!

Seem simple enough, once you go custom stay there. No beer in the fridge tonight so I'll probably even remember that one.
Anyways, got it installed and running backups now. I just want to tryout flexreaper, and CM9. See what I like, and see if either fixes the crappy stack GPS lock performance. Once I pick I'll stay there for a long time. I suspect after I pick a rom that works for me I'll load up crossix mod for the extra space, I can really use it.

Ran into an issue. It errored out while backing up my data. I was able to just power down, and back up. When it came backup I noticed I had zero free space left internally so I know what the error was. I just can't for the life of me figure out how to change the backup location to the external card.

currently its a bug with ics and cwm..it cant backup properly to the external...and the other problem is it backs up your entire internal....so basically if you have 4gigs taken up...its gonna exceed the 8gig.
sorry i didnt mention this as its not a huge bug for me as i dont have barely any data on the internal.
best bet is to delete that massive backup...and move some stuff (music,movies etc) over to your external. and re run the nandroid.
not a big issue but obviously a pita...
i would recommend cm9 personally...it will eventually be updated very frequently...were waiting on acer source to be released. also ive had better gps performance on cm9.

So, let me think out loud here. The smart way to do this would be
1. Use Titanium backup to back up all of my apps, and data to the external SD
2. Delete apps, and data until I have enough room left on the internal SD.
3. Move everything off of the external SD onto my computer
4. Full nandroid backup onto internal SD using CWM.
5. Back that up onto the computer
6. Flush everything using CWM
7. Flash CM9 or flexreaper and see what I like
8. Do crossix mememory swap mod
9. Restore apps and data from Titanium Backups, or just reload from app store
10. Relax
Does that seem safe, and in the correct order?

Thanks for this post because I had no idea this was out there. I have a few questions. How is this differ from clockword MOD Recovery? What does TWRP even stand for? Also in version 5.4.8.5 works on the internal and external mounts of the SD Cards and it only backs up the system as opposed to the media at the time. You mind schooling me on the differences of this and clockwork Mod? Thanks

TWRP=TeamWin Recovery Project,i know that part.

Nice work, I'm surely gonna try .

Installed it last night using these instructions and it works. Haven't exhaustively tested it yet though.
Hopefully someone will build an Odin .tar or a cwm flashable package soon to make it noob-friendly. I'd hate to see someone brick from a typo

Great find, trying this out now, seems to work so far. Also for anyone who isn't comfortable with ADB, you can follow the instructions from 'su' on the OP and install this with Terminal Emulator as well.
EDIT: I can also verify that TWRP does mount both internal and external SD via the local file manager, however I haven't been able to mount it with my computer. Also, TWRP by default back-ups to your sd-card and not the phone the way it should.

agree, i may try to tar this up since i have wubi on vm.

All you have to do to flash this is go to market and look up goo.im app.After you download app hit menu then install open recovery script.Done

Tried that. Only Verizon SG3 is supported via this method.

what are the benefits of this over CWM recovery?

A bit more user friendly in my opinion. Plus a few additional options that cwm doesn't have like a built in file manager, and stock it writes to sd card.

This flashes fine on an ATT SGSIII, but I cannot mount the internal sdcard. Any ideas?

You will need to go into Mount and ensure that SD Card is checked. This will not allow your computer to see it, however you will be able to view the SD Card from the built in file manager and back-up/restore to the SD Card as well.

No dice. The option to mount the sdcard is there and it is unselected, but I am not able to select it. No need to have it visible via USB for me, but backup/restore and most importantly the ability to flash from the sdcard are must haves.

It seems a bit finicky, I would try clicking on and around until it selects. I don't think you being on AT&T would affect that, but that could always be a possibility as well.

From my trials, I have noticed that if you press on it, even though it doesnt show it is selected, it probably is. Go to backup and check out the available size and see if it matches up with your SD card. Worked this way for me.

Has anyone on Tmobile flashed many roms with twrp yet, and has anyone had any of the dreaded losing imei issues? I'm currently on the Sprint cwm from team epic, but I have the Tmo gs3. The Tmo cwm would not recognize my external sd card & that's a must for me, I even tried the touch version. With all these reports of ppl losing their IMEI #, I haven't been able to flash any rom for fear id brick my phone & my flash counter is already tripped. Any advice or personal experience would be greatly appreciated, as I loved twrp on my Transformer Prime & I feel it may be safer for preserving my imei that cwm.

i flashed 3 different roms today with no issues and used nandroid once, hope that helps ya.(2 kernels also)

I can also verify that it works without any issues. I flashed CM9 and then restored my TW after toying around with it for a bit. No issues here.

From my trials, I have noticed that if you press on it, even though it doesnt show it is selected, it probably is. Go to backup and check out the available size and see if it matches up with your SD card. Worked this way for me.

No, still not coming up with anything in /sdcard. If I hit the "terminal" button in the center, it reads E: Can't mount /sdcard. I flashed CWM orginally using a different out file path in the dd command, but if my linux knowledge serves me correct it still points to the same memory blocks. I've flashed back and forth between CWM and TWRP several times to no avail. Also, I'm flashing this via terminal emulator and not adb but I doubt that makes a difference either.
Edit: internal sdcard shows up under /data/media. this breaks recovery scripts that sen TWRP looking for /sdcard, but at least I can flash manually from TWRP.
