Does it have a removable sim or is it embedded?
Thus far I think all we know is that there's not a removable SIM and that the Evo LTE has an imbedded SIM for LTE and we're kinda assuming that the Sprint Gnex must also have an embedded SIM for LTE then.

Confirmed embedded by someone else as well.
So much for LTE interchangeability...looks like it will be the same ol' as the CDMA vs GSM thing except with different LTE frequencies/technologies.
i've done lots of searching for this very same answer.
what i've concluded..."embedded sim" means NOTHING. it is the same **** as ESN number verification per carrier.
embedded sim simply means we are giving you 2 serial numbers on your phone to validate in our database. if your phone isn't in our database, we will NOT register your phone.

Yeah but it means that there won't be the luxury of open GSM and swapping phones etc even though they are switching to GSM technology. Its like why bother. Only a cdma carrier can screw up a GSM standard like that. Sigh...I die a bit more each day.

From what I can tell, the phone does have a SIM card that's simply locked into the back of the device which can not be accessed. Anyone willing to pry open the back of the phone to see if the SIM card can be removed?

I don't know man. I saw the FCC filing photos for it and pictures of it pried open. Even given the benefit of the doubt that those pictures wouldn't include a SIM card anyways, it didn't have anywhere inside of it to place a SIM card.
BIP.apk is a proprietary apk on Sprint and Verizon. I am pretty sure it is sim related.
I don't know about this tech to really know for certain. Let me ask: Does GSM HAVE to use a sim card? Or is it more of a feature/convenience/method for carriers to authenticate devices?
Related
Ok, this is for all you guys who have imported before. i have never by the way. When the phone arrives and you insert your sim card, att/tmobile for example. will the phone automatically pick up the required signals to stay on your carrier and not roam to another? or do you have to set it to us what you want only?
Also one of the reasons i am choosing this phone is to have a phone that will be ready and capable of handling att's eventual takeover of tmobile. I would imagine that you will have to get an att sim card when that happens. But it is nice to be prepared Thanx
EDIT> NEW QUESTION ADDED....
Ok I should have asked this but it just crossed my mind.lol.. Since the phone is being imported will everything work correctly? Will I get the Us version of the market, etc?
Also is anyone else afraid of day one bugs?
yes, it's governed by the sim card. you put in an at+t sim card, it'll look for an at+t signal. same with tmobile.
eric b
Well, the T-mobile SIM card will connect you to the T-mo network. The opposite for AT&T SIM card
It has pentaband HSPA+ though, so you'll get full speed with both networks.
Lol ok, seems simple enough. What confused me was i remember on my nexus s, there was a clickable box that allowed me to switch between the two. So i figured id ask

Sure, you could click Network operators and see both networks listed. You would be denied from connecting to the network that doesn't match your SIM though.
Is the knownledge really so bad about GSM in the US that this seems like some kind of dark magic? It must really suck to be so controlled by the carriers whim. You can see it like terrestrial TV. When searching for channels you will pick up all channels that are broadcast (providing the signal is good enough) but you can't actually watch them unless you pay for them.

Yes, it is this bad. No one knows how it works. Not their fault, its the fact that they think that the carriers are the ones that make the phones and give them to consumers, rather than the consumers purchasing phones and using the carriers as dumb network providers.

Just remember, it doesn't matter where in the world the phone comes from. If it supports the bands for the Network/SIM you're using, just put in your SIM and don't worry about it lol. Don't think of it as being an "international" phone. Its just a GSM phone.

I was on T-mobile USA a few years ago when living in the States; started off with pre-paid and moved to a contracct plan. From what I remember, the pre-paid SIM cards don't let you roam on Cingular/AT&T but the contract SIM would. It depends on inter-carrier arrangements so it's best to ask a T-mobile rep about this.
And in doubt, I'd suggest disabling data roaming if you're in area where you can't reliably connect to your normal carrier!

There was a reason why I wasn't posting anything here. I knew stuff in US was a bit different....... So like what hircus said, ask a T-mobile rep.....
In Malaysia where I live, the only contract phones that actually sell in great numbers is the iPhone. Our contracts plans are quite bad and buying an unlocked phone and putting your own SIM card is a cheaper on the long run. Oh, (not too sure for the iPhone), in Malaysia when you buy a phone on contract, the phone is not "locked" to a specific carrier... go figure......

yes, the market is sim card dependent you'll get the US market and services (like google voice), no worries.

A sprint store should be able to figure it out. If it's a brand new phone I don't see why not.

Can't activate on Verizon either
I'm having the same problem-- but with Verizon. Bought it from ebay, in great communication with the seller who is trying to help.
Phone isn't stolen/lost; no outstanding balances on the phone or my plan.
Factory data reset didn't help one bit. Can't activate fully-- just get internet (no calls/texts).

Did you get a new 4g sim card with your new phone? Or a sim replacement? You need to activate the sim card, but as long as its already activated, any device should work.

Yep, this is the third new SIM (LTE) card. Been to both the store and on the phone with Verizon tech reps.
Tech reps say activation is "stuck at the switch" (this is day 3... btw)
should I unroot it? I've already done 2 factory data resets.... Or should I just wait it out?

A lot of custom roms do not have all the required proprietaries needed for such things like sim activation. Or they include them, but do not sign them correctly.

Just put it on a stock ROM
When i got my nexus it came with liquid on it unlockedrooted
i just flashed the 4.04 stock ROM build that bird man compiled found over at rootzwiki and it got activated
At this point you have the option of putting the official stock 4.04 vzw build on it tho which i would recommend, preferably one without any tweaks, rooted should be fine tho
To the OP, try putting your self on a stock ROM for sprint and you should be gravy
Good luck!

That's a pretty old baseband, isn't it? Have you given the newer UGLC1 or XXLA2 radios? You really should be using a radio meant for 4.0.4, like one of those two. You can find them at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1405345

Yeah, it sounds like it may be a problem with how the carrier has your line provisioned. Go talk to them and see if they can fix it.
Would buying a prepaid phone package (one with a "dumb" phone) cause any problems?
Are there different SIM cards for "dumb" phones and smart phones?

No it wouldn't but like coolsplice said, your account is possibly provisioned incorrectly for "3G/4G(H)." I would go speak with them and see if they can revise your account to reflect its proper information.
It definitely is weird when voice/texts work but your phone is unable to get 4G/3G data. Have previous phones had this problem at all?

I know this may seem stupid but I tried every radio I could and I couldn't get data coz I was roaming on at&t from T-Mobile.

you may have to be the best soldering expert ever to pull that off, and even then, haha. try it though, you could make a gsm/cdma hybrid device, thatd be cool!

Actually I wouldn't do that.... That stuff would get everywhere, and it conducts electricity too..... You could risk shorting your whole phone and frying it. However, if you made a like rubber ring or something what would keep it it place better, it would most likely increase the heat transfer. But keep in mind these phones, just like laptops, were designed to have higher heat tolerances.

Coverage is good here with Bell Canada. I know with my GS2 i was able to go in the Band Selection Service Menu, to choose the band i wanted to use. Is there such menu with the I317M? Or is there another way to select LTE?
Thanks!
No toggle to turn it on or off as far as I know. Does LTE work in other locations?
Moved around the city with no luck only H+.
Are you using an LTE micro SIM with the Note2?
I worked as a cellphone dealer, you must be on an LTE data plan with a LTE sim card to receive LTE. Call bell to verify you have an lte capable sim card and are on an lte plan.

I suspect than my current micro sim is not but before going back to the store i wanted to try everything.
As long as you're on a postpaid plan with at least 500 MB of data /month, you are eligible for LTE with an LTE capable phone and micro SIM. Bell's LTE micro SIM card is labeled "LTE".

Are you stock?
If you flashed a port, you might have LTE and just not see the icon.

Thank, I just got off the phone with Technical Services and they came to the comclusion that my sim is not LTE compatible. Thanks for the picture, it confirms also that it is not. My micro sim does not mention LTE on it. So I'll go to the store where I bought it at lunch and ask them to replace it.
Thanks!

Yes, i'm stock. The only thing I did was to root it with ChainFire's Exynos Exploit app.
Another thing to check is to make your APN is set up correctly for Lte. Hope you get the problem fixed!

I went to Bell Store at lunch. Exchanged my microSIM for another one with the mention of LTE on it. Now, my phone can receive and transmit in LTE with no problem.
Thanks everyone.
After reading through this thread I too swapped out an old SIM for a new one. But my problem was calls dropping or going straight to voicemail and lte not working in areas but my husbands would work. Got the new SIM card yesterday haven't missed a call, connecting to lte is fast and steady and a bonus is my phone seems to be a little more snappier then b4 like when closing and opening apps or watching youtube videos. Thanks OP for making this tread or else I might not have figured out what was wrong with my phone.
