Hello All..
I was an apple fan since 2007 The iOS, i wasnt really convinced with android till the day of release of HTC ONE X , This Phone Really Changes my mind with it Incredible Features and the quality of the device.
I,m new to android , i,ve learned how to unlock the bootlader , do the root and recovery , also installing a custom rooms and some MODs on it .
I need some information about:-
1- What does kernel and boot.img do?
2- What is the S-On and S-Off means ?
3- Is it possible to return my device as it is in the first original rom [bootloader locked, No root] as a new device? and HOW ?
4-Does MODs works on any room or for specific ones ?
5- What is H-boot ?
Any one use any instant messaging app like whatsapp Etc.. to contact him directly ? fast and easier
thank you in advance
1- What does kernel and boot.img do?
GOOGLE SOLVES EVERYTHING.
2- What is the S-On and S-Off means ?
HTC SENSE ON or HTC SENSE ON.
It enables or disables the htc sense interface.
3- Is it possible to return my device as it is in the first original rom [bootloader locked, No root] as a new device? and HOW ?
You can RELOCK your bootloader.... but anyways you lost your warranty (IF YOU UNLOCK YOUR BOOTLOADER).
ANd you can return to the original rom and config with this thread
4-Does MODs works on any room or for specific ones ?
See specifications about it.
5- What is H-boot ?
i DONT KNOW CLEARLY, BUT GOOGLE KNOWS TOO MUCH.
Well I can answer some of the questions:
1. boot.img contains the kernel inside (not sure what else)
2. S-ON or S-OFF I think means security-on/off
3 it is possible as long as the bootloader is locked/re-locked. You have to flash the RUU of your region/country where the phone came from. Without S-OFF we can't get super CID
I don't get your 4th question
5. HBOOT is loaded immediately when your phone is switched on, and it’s mainly responsible for checking and initializing the hardware and starting the phone’s software. It can also be used for flashing official software releases, as well as a few other things. HBoot can be compared to the BIOS on a computer.
1- What does kernel and boot.img do?
The kernel is like the middle-man between the hardware and the OS. it holds drivers for the hardware and tells the OS how to interact with the hardware.
2- What is the S-On and S-Off means ?
Security on/ Security off. It is another way to enable the phone to flash different Roms, The only way to flash roms at the moment is to unlock the bootloader but then HTC has a record of all unlocked phones.
3- Is it possible to return my device as it is in the first original rom [bootloader locked, No root] as a new device? and HOW ?
Yes it is, there are tutorials in this section on how to do this.
4-Does MODs works on any room or for specific ones ?
It depends what the mods are and how they are implemented, again it's best to read the threads on the specific mods.
5- What is H-boot ?
H-boot sort of holds the partition layout for the rom, from my experience with my desire different roms fitted different H-boot's. Not sure about anything else.
Added To my knowledge
Thanks All , i appreciate your fast responses
S-ON Locked = Security on + Bootloader locked = This is what your phone is out of the box.
S-ON Unlocked = Security on + Bootloader unlocked via htcdev = You can write new system and recovery images e.g. custom firmware. You can't alter the baseband or CID however. HTC run htcdev and know you unlocked it which will affect your warranty.
S-ON Relocked = Security on + Bootloader locked = You unlocked via htcdev and then relocked it. You can't go back to S-ON Locked normally. HTC know that you previously unlocked it.
S-OFF = Security off - You can alter anything you want in the phone including the baseband and CID value which determines what branding you get. You need a third party exploit to get S-OFF as HTC won't let you do it on retail handsets.
HBOOT is the bootloader. If you're concerned about getting S-OFF then you shouldn't update this at all since it may fix a vulnerability that is required later on for S-OFF.
Just for info:
Unlocking your bootloader does NOT void your warranty, your warranty is still valid for hardware issues but not software unless you have a branded phone, and if the software change made by you has affected the hardware somehow maybe by overclocking the CPU and frying it then the warranty will not cover it.
It should be noted that S-OFF DOES void all warranty.

1. Power Phone Off by Holding power button for 10 secs
2. select Fastboot with volume + or - then press power
3. plug your phone into your PC and open a Command Prompt.
(windows XP - Click Start > Run > type CMD in box then press OK
(Windows 7 - Click Start > type CMD in search box then press Enter)
4. cd to your fastboot files folder cd c:\fastboot
5. type in your command prompt "fastboot flash boot boot.img"

Note: This works for some people, but I suggest you don't update, because majority of the people are having problems.
theq86 has reported his phone bricked.
Conclusions:
1- S-ON & Bootloader Locked
Your HBOOT will stay to the version 1.08.0000.
You will not be able to unlock the bootloader until HTCDev updates its RUU.
2- S-ON & Bootloader Unlocked (HBOOT 1.08.0009)
Your HBOOT will be downgraded to 1.08.0000 and your bootloader will be locked again. You will lose root and CWM.
You will not be able to unlock the bootloader until HTCDev updates its RUU.
3- S-OFF
Your HBOOT will stay (or be updated/downgraded) to 1.08.0000.
You don't have to worry about the bootloader cause it is unlocked forever.
For those who performed the update and are S-ON and want to unlock their bootloader, three solutions :
1- S-OFF your phone with an XTC-Clip
2- Wait for a software S-OFF (they are getting closer and closer)
3- Wait that HTCDev updates its RUU. We should write to them to be sure they are aware of this problem.
Want to get rid of the notifications telling you to update?
1. Download update (to the phone).
2. When the phone asks to install update, plug your phone to the computer in Disk Drive mode.
3. Run Winrar and browse to sdcard/download and enter OTA_Marvel_S_HTC_Europe_2.13.401.3-2.13.401.2_release_237041qqcw21hxt5vkhdz6.zip.
4. Inside you will find file firmware.zip. Unpack it anywhere.
5. Run Winrar and enter unpacked firmware.zip.
6. Click INFO button and go to SFX label.
7. Click "Remove the already existing module from the archive" and OK.
8. Delete all files except "android-info.txt". Save file (firmware.zip).
9. Replace firmware.zip in original OTA update.
10. Run update in your phone.
11. You will see yellow exclamation mark in triangle which means failure.
12. Remove the baterry for one second.
13. Turn on. Phone will show smtng like "update file is corrupt. download again?" - click NO. Turn off automatic check for updates in settings.

Why is this update bad?
Why is this update bad? (background info)
HTC included it's newest radio and hboot with the update. Actually nothing to worry about, but there's a problem regarding software version numbers.
For example (HTC EU example):
My WFS shipped EU 2.3.3 (sw no. 1.33.401.2)
Then came the FOTA to EU 2.3.5 (sw no. 2.13.401.2)
And some days past a new FOTA (sw no. 2.13.401.3)
the software numbers are the problem here. HTCDEV provides the RUU updater for unlockable hboot only for 2.13.401.2.
As we know, HTC will not allow us to downgrade even a signed ruu. Thus, we will get a main version is older error.
This leads to the conclusions above.
------------------------------------
Will there be a way to re-unlock the phone?
HTC wrote:
Unfortunately once the device has updated to the most recent software it cannot be reverted to the previous update allowing the device to be unlocked. I can escalate this issue as a feature request to see if a further Hboot update can be released in the future for users who may have missed the opportunity to unlock their devices.
I hope that this information meets with your requirements. Should you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact me again.

The easiest way is to edit the software number to a lower one. The How-To is in the forum here:

UPDATED POST #2 IMPORTANT
Hi there!
I need a little help.. My problem is that I can't remove CWM 5.0.2.8 from my Marvel.
It is S-OFF with XTC Clip.
USB Debugging is ON.
Fast Boot is ON.
I have stock ROM 2.3.5
I chose Charge Only.
I use Marvel Auto-Installers. It detect my Marvel.. I press uninstall recovery (HTC original). Then my phone restarts. After booting I shut down and restart with vlume down pressed to check what recovery I have and... surprise: still CWM 5.0.2.8!
Any little help will be appreciated.
Then please download the auto-installers new.
Go to the folder installed the auto-installers and you will find a orig.img and a fastboot.exe
Restart your phone into the fastboot mode and open terminal. Navigate to the fastboot.exe and execute this command:
fastboot flash recovery orig.img
Thanks a lot!
sending 'recovery' <3100KB>... OKAY
writing 'recovery' ... FAILED (remote: not allowed)
Any ideas?

No, this command must work for unlocked bootloader too.
Have you relocked bootloader? Or check if u really unlocked!!!
I don't know how my bootloader is.. My phone is S-Off by XTC Clip and I have a stock ROM 2.3.5 installed in CWM Recovery from a zip file..
Ähm, i think the StockHBOOT does not support the flash recovery command, if i'm right
Or what HBOOTversion you have?

of course it does support. as you see in helbets post. just fastboot rejects flashing. which should not happen if he is s-off
Can anyone confirm whether this updated ROM can be rooted using the usual methods (GingerBreak/ZergRush) ?
Thanks.

I can confirm , done it. Head to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1445867 there is solution.
Want to re-lock your bootloader for some reason?
Want to get back to the state it were before unlocking?
Want to get rid of RELOCKED and instead have LOCKED (OOW) (1.08.0099) or LOCKED (1.09.0099) again for Downgrading and get warranty back?
Want to unlock bootloader again without data wipe?
Want to downgrade to an earlier RUU?
Control your bootloader now as you wish!
* Easily switch between LOCKED (OOW), RELOCKED or UNLOCKED without losing data.
* Set Superversion
What is Superversion:
All RUUs have main software number versions. You can not downgrade to lower versions. In the forums there is a fix where you have to edit and reflash your misc partition.(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1445867)
Now you need no hex editor anymore. Just chose Superversion option and the update.zip will do anything for you.
UPDATE:
* Added option for Superversion

i don't see why it wouldn't work with cdma. It pulls your misc partition img. Its not like it has a misc.img included and flashing that. So, I think it would work on CDMA just fine. For that matter, any device really.

Right. It dumps the misc partition to a file. the "bltool" looks at specific offsets and only changes what it has to change. the rest is kept as is and the partition is dumped back.
unless CDMA phones use the different offsets in the misc.img (which is highly improbable) it works with cdma, too.

It's not intended to.
Well i used it and it works well under the HTC Wildfire (Buzz) Although the superversion still just shows unlocked. I have tried it myself and no harm came to the Hboot at all.
With S-On though i have managed with a little bit of adb shell magic by typing this into adb shell as root i.e #
echo -e '[email protected]=7,1\r' > /dev/smd0
and then rebooting the phone.
This tool will just change the misc partition. It sets the bootloader lock state.
the superversion option changes the main version to 0.0.0.0 so that any ruu can be installed.
Thanks for info at least you know it will work on the Wildfire (buzz) the little brother to Wildfire S (marvel)
Can somebody please tell me how to update it...
I'm stuck on fastboot and I cannot use adb, so is there any way I can update this with fastboot on Wildfire S (marvel) S-ON????

I'm interested in whether it works for the One S, also. Don't need to get back for warranty, but this tool is invaluable.

Hi.
I used CID Getter (with a picture of a cupcake) from the Play store to find out my device's CID... and it came up "1111111" - what does that mean? What is the CID and what is it used for? Why do socks always come out the washer in odd singles?
Thanks - and sorry if I appear a bit n00b-ish - I am not and prbably never will be a Dev but I like to try and understand an overview of my device's workings.
One X, 1.29.401.7
That would normally indicate your device is Super CID - if you boot into HBOOT does it show as S-ON or S-OFF?
S-OFF - which I know means that I could (should I so choose) flash custom ROMs cos it doesn't check for the HTC Signature on them.
What does the CID do? What's it for? What's a Super-CID (although the answer to that last will probably become apparent before you answer it)...
you are one of the lucky ones that got a s-off device. you can flash recoverys, radios, roms on your device without unlocking it throu htcdev
OK, but what does the ordinary everyday CID mean? What is the purpose of the value?
its to identify whether your phone is brandet by a carrier or you are in a specific region. for example if you have a t-mobile brandet device your cid will be different than a non brandet device and your phone only accepts roms/ruus for you cid. with supercid you can flash any ruu
stonelaughter said:

Basically HTC phones have a CID (Customer ID, I think) which identifies the region/carrier. For example, the European unbranded handsets in the UK have the CID HTC__001 whereas Vodafone UK is VODAF001 (or something like that).
This means that only updates intended for your device can be applied, otherwise you get an error.
Super CID (11111111) allows you to flash ANY ROM for ANY region onto your phone so is desirable for those living abroad but want to put a different regions software on it, or for someone with a branded phone to revert to the generic HTC firmware
Super CID, coupled with S-OFF, basically means you can do ANYTHING with your phone and have no restrictions at all
OK so having SuperCID and S-OFF STILL doesn't mean I have root access to my current OS install. How would I get that?
No, but it means it's VERY easy to do it...
You connect the phone to your PC in fastboot mode and then use fastboot commands to flash the custom recovery, e.g.
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
You then use the custom recovery to either flash the root package OR a whole new ROM
Is your One X S-OFF? If so, you're lucky (and I want it)
Oh, right-O. Thanks.
Where would I get the custom recovery IMG file from? Is there a FAQ somewhere with all the fastboot commands in it? Do I connect to FASTBOOT using Putty or something?
p.s. yes it is.

I take it you have a review model then? If not how the hell have you managed to get an S-OFF handset!
The latest Clockwork Mod recovery is here:
http://download.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-5.8.3.1-endeavoru.img
Download it, rename it recovery.img and store in your fastboot/adb folder
1. Make sure you have fast boot turned off in Settings>Power
2. Turn the phone off
3. Turn it on holding volume down to get to HBOOT
4. Press power to get to FASTBOOT
5. Connect to your PC
6. Once drivers are installed (they're part of HTC Sync if you need them) open a command prompt
7. Browse to your fastboot/adb folder
8. Run the fastboot command:
fastboot devices
9. If it shows your unit, run the command
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
10. Once complete, run the command
fastboot reboot-bootloader
11. Once the phone has rebooted, disconnect from the PC and press power to get back to HBOOT
12. Select Recovery from the menu using the volume keys and press power to select
13. It should then boot in CWM
To root the phone, power up as normal and download this file and save to the root of the SD card:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1046553&d=1336400579
Then boot into the new recovery and flash the ZIP file
Job done!
And it'll also explain why you have the OTA before anyone else the UK (my question on Elevate)
OK - my PC is Windows 7 so I don't have a "fastboot/adb" folder... where do I find the equivalent? (Or did you mean on the drive it maps to the phone storage?)
Oh - and thanks for not treating me like a n00b - it's something I've disliked about this place in the past.
fastboot/adb is what you download from Google (part of the Android SDK):
http://dl.google.com/android/installer_r18-windows.exe
Thank you very nicely
Keep the 1.29.401.7 RUU to hand as well
I've always been a bit flaky with understanding cid as this is my first HTC device. Sammy was no where near as complicated.
So what if we have an international one x but our ruu is Asian. I'm flashing roms with European ruu. Does that mean its bad? And im not getting full benefits? My original firmware ruu is on 1.28 Asian but my rom is 1.29 European.
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA
What you're saying is impossible - if you're running 1.29.401.7 and it is NOT a custom ROM then you have an EU handset not an Asian one
The ONLY time this is different is if you have an S-OFF device and you've changed from Asian to the EU one - they can't BOTH be on the phone at the same time
Basically - if your phone had x.xx.401.x on it out the box and is S-ON you ONLY flash RUUs that are x.xx.401.x
If you have an S-OFF device you can change from x.xx.401.x to x.xx.xxx.x as there is no protection on the bootloader

I'm talking about custom ROMs lol..........MY CID is HTC__044 so that should be the asian WWE firmware if I'm not mistaken.
I've unlocked bootloader and rooted and flashing custom ROMs that are based off the European x.xx.401.x RUU, I was asking if thats a problem. Asian WWE is x.xx.707.x RUU
Custom ROMs have no bearing on CID as they don't matter - CIDs only come into play with stock official HTC ROMs
Hi
Before starting I want you to know that I have been through 5-10 threads regarding the subject problem and still not know what to do. I am basically a layman to Flashing. The most adventurous thing I have done is downgrading a Sony Xperia Arc S from ICS to Gingerbread using a simple sofware sort of thing called "flashtool" and downloading ......... (i am leaving it blank cuz at the moment I am quite confused. Lets call it its original firmware)
And before I can explain the problem I am confused between the following terms: RECOVERY, ROM, KERNEL and RUU. Kernel i know is a software layer between H/w and OS. But then why we need to flash it seperately???? it should be a part of OS: which i think is called a ROM. RUU is the update to a recovery. but what exactly is the difference between ROM and RECOVERY. both seem to be like some sort of an image file that contains complete OS. Then there are bloody BOOTs that you have to unlock and keep lock at some times. God knows why
Now coming to the problem:
My HTC One X (bought here in Pakistan and should be containing the international firmware, i dont know for sure)
One fine morning a few days ago my phone showed up the update HTC released recently which changes the appearance of the GUI. I was quite happy to see it and immediately selected the option to install the update. The update ran and installed successfully. I used the new GUI for 2 days or so and then suddenly my phone got stoned (or brick or stuck). It turned off when i tried to use it and then started showing

Battery level is too low to flash
FASTBOOT USB
HBOOT
REBOOT
REBOOT BOOTLOADER
POWERDOWN
So I am screwed really badly. The USB debugging mode that i know is essential to install a firmware is not enabled. and my device is not rooted. The device is not charging up properly.
I have downloaded Hansoon all in one toolkit (which seems to be of no use since debugging mode is not enabled). I have android SKD downloaded in my pc. so is HTC Sync. But dont have any idea where to begin.
AND MOST IMPORTANTLY I WANT TO SAVE THE DATA INSIDE THE PHONE THAT I CANT ACCESS.
..... i am trying to root the device using hansoon. but for that i need to generate some sort of a code. Now my device is showing up one option named barcode where i can see MB SN and IMEI of the device. is it possible to generate that code using these three???
Can anyone give me stepwise directions to deal with this problem???? please give me complete instructions. like i am not sure which firmware was there in my phone (asian, international ....) so give me detailed instructions please.
Learned about HTCDEV now following the instructions on that site to unlock the bootloader. this will enable me to root the device and ultimately flash a ROM. But i wish everything was as simple as 1 2 3
NOW THE QUESTION IS WILL I BE ABLE TO ACCESS THE BUILT IN MEMORY OF THE PHONE TO RECOVER MY DATA???
can't you just copy your data from your hox to pc, unlock bootloader and then copy them back?

thanks for the reply. it cant be done i think cause unlocking the bootloader will erase all data from the phone. And this is what is stopping me now to unlock it.
Any other way the data can be read???

it will only erase personal data, after unlocking the phone will be just like after a factory reset... i still don't understand which data you want to read after unlocking bootloader...

so you can copy the data from th hox to the computer before unlocking bootloader, then perform backup with titanium backup, then unlock bootloader, restore backup and then copy data back on the device
Hi,
I dont think you can backup your things without the rom booting.
You can backup if your using a custom recovery (not stock), but as you show the screen on bootloader tells that the HOX is S-ON and the bootloader is locked.
To change recovery you need to unlock the bootloader (that erases data partition, like the factory reset).
Another thing that i saw its the "Battery level is too low to flash".
Try to turn off and leave it changing for some hours and then try to boot again.
If the HOX boot you can make a backup of your apps (and data) with "adb backup ...".
Sorry for the bad english.
try to read one of these threads

One thing came to my mind..
are you sure this is the correct intl. version of HTC One X? (not X+)
seeing your hboot version is 1.73 while mine is 1.36..
you do that by checking either your device is "endeavoru" or "evita" or "endeavoru C2"
also by checking your box either it's dual core or quad core 1.5 or quad core 1.7
and by checking the beats logo on the back
One X intl. is "endeavoru" with quad core 1.5 and there's "beatsaudio" text on the back and not just big beats logo...

Hey guys
got a HTC M9 with cid "O2___102" which won't boot up after stock update.
Phone was not modified yet.
1. Can't unlock bootloader (says: "(bootloader) [KillSwitch] Last Byte is 0X00, disable unlock") - so no way to install custom recovery + custom rom to revive
2. Can't boot into recovery (shows phone with a red exclamation mark but no menu) so no way to factory rest
3. can't find a matching RUU for the "O2___102" CID ...
PLEASE HELP =(
At the screen with the red triangle and exclamation mark, press and hold the power button. While holding the power button, quickly press and release the volume + button. If this gets you to recovery, try a factory reset.

I do believe if you can get to download mode you can do a factory nreset from there, if that will help you.

The UK ones for O2 can be used with the German O2 CID, too. You can find them for example in my Collection of Back-to-Stock Files or on androidRUU. But I'm not sure whether a downgrade from android 5.1 is possible with S-ON. The only confirmed downgrades with S-ON were from 1.32.XXX.15 to 1.32.XXX.8. And from my experiences with Denis Meissner and Amr Nasser I would say that a downgrade isn't possible with S-ON if the first and/or the second number of the actual firmware version differ from the ones of the firmware you want to downgrade to.

Can you flash twrp recovery? If you can, maybe you can flash a stock backup from someone else.

Yeah, would have suprised me if it worked. As said before even downgrading from 1.40.XXX.X to 1.32.XXX.X seems to be impossible with S-ON. How long did you actually wait until you thought that you phone doesn't boot? The update to android 5.1 and the first boot took around an hour for me. Maybe you just need to wait a little longer. If your phone was unlocked I would suggest you to flash TWRP and use one of my stock backups but...
The only other option I can see right now is trying to find someone who has a java card. With S-OFF you should be able to downgrade with the RUU. (If I remember correctly there were one or two shops advertising their java card services on Android-Hilfe.) This option may not be for free but it should still be cheaper than sending your phone to HTC's repair service or buying a new phone.

whats that java card you're talkin about? Never heard of that.
An appropiate RUU with the latest version should theoretically also work, right?
Problem ist that I cant flash anything custom because bootloader locked and I cant get inside the system to enable the bootloader unlock... =( and the thing has a visually broken volume up key for dropping down, so the htc support won't fix it (for free) I fear.. otherwise I would just give it to them since it has not been modified yet. (not my phone ..)
P.S:
OS Version is 2.10.206.2 - thats the latest one right?

Yes, 2.10.206.2 is the latest version for now. If there were a RUU with your firmware version then using it would be the easiest way to solve your problems. But as far as I know the only existing ones for O2 are for 1.32.206.6 and 1.32.206.15. But with S-OFF you would be able to use the older RUUs, too.
I never used a java card so my knowledge about this topic isn't that outstanding. I know that it is a small, SIM-Card-like looking thing that allows you to S-OFF your phone. Usually they cost several hundred euros/dollars and the number of times you can use them is limited. Since verizon blocks bootloader unlocking these cards are the only option if a verizon users wants to flash anything on his/her phone. Some German phone shops offered S-OFF by java card, too, before sunshine got updated for the M9. That's why I gave you the link to Android-Hilfe. (And that's actually all I know about that topic.)
i need this rru please any one have to uplode link
thanks
Just as an update, I recently bricked this phone trying to flash lineage to it. To fix it, I went to HTC.com and downloaded the current RUU and put the phone into download mode. I know some people say you don't need to "relock" the device, but I don't get errors during the installation with RUU when relocked. Plus, I am running with S-on.

Bootloader and s status are irrelevant. The phone will flash regardless.
