Hi, I'm trying to send message to thread about http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1546915, but as I am a new member of the forum, I need to rack up 10 posts before making a post directly to correct thread.
So here I go with the questions here, with 10 posts or so if I get reply's here.
First post and first question 1:
Hi, thanks for good custom rom.
The question:
I did superwipe for my Desire Z and installed the latest beta 6 to my phone. Noticed that it is currently missing all international keyboard configurations for the physical keyboard that the CM9 and other ICS firmwares have. Otherwise than that it is working quite well.
So can you please add to Beta 7 or RC (when ever that is coming) the missing keyboard configurations? I also tested the bluetooth (which was not working with other ROMS that well) and it works quite well with my car audio and Nokia's BH-905i headset...
Please do notice that Sense ROMs do not have international settings for the hardware keyboard. Apart from the stock ROM, no other Sense 3/3.5/3.6 and even 4 have this setting.
Use the search tool in the right of the thread title. This has been discussed before in the Ice Cream Sensewich thread.
Ah my bad, just interested why it cannot be put in there when other roms have it?

Well, as opposed to AOSP (Cyanogen, ILWT, etc) where code is freely available to edit and change stuff, Sense is HTC's proprietary code. They are not required to show us the code, so inner workings of Sense are hidden to us.
Some of the stuff can be edited because it's available by changing some parameters, but for the most part, Sense is pretty much an inaccessible gate.

So this wont help (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=25013313) to get at least Nordic hardware keyboard to work? I can try and flash it to my device and see if it works. I'll report back if I encounter some issues while doing it.

I am no developer, but if the part about the hardware keyboard is managed by the operating system, and not by Sense's framework, then yes, it should be just a manner of adding the correct keymaps. Probably no one has bothered to do that, yet ?
I guess you can copy any working keymaps and keylayouts to IceCreamSensewich. You can find the keymaps and keylayout in the /system/usr folder.

Hi Guys!
I have been searching for days if someone has managed to install a clean google rom on his HTC Hero. I can only find people running rooted Hero Roms.
The point is, i want to get rid of all the HTC Apps. I've managed to delete a lot of the stock applications, and it improved the speed a lot!
If i install any other "Magic based rom" the phone will hang on the HTC boot screen.
If i push original google apps like "contacts.apk/.odex" to the phone, they won't run.
Can someone port the original Magic/ION rom to the Hero please? I know a lot of people want to run a "clean android" rom on the hero.

My phone is rooted now with Modaco / CyanogenMod v1.4 + JF.

I cannot see the point why someone would want that . No offense , i mean all the HTC customisation and Rosie was the whole point in buying this device instead of the HTC Magic( which has the exact same specifications and a way lot cheaper)

To be honest, i don't really know why i bought the hero. I didn't know much about android at the time i bought one. Now i know better, but anyway, that's not what i want to discuss..
The magic can almost run any rom, why can't the hero run any rom i want?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Please people, i don't want to be a jerk, but don't come up with questions like "Why did you buy a hero then?" ..

I'm on the same boat. When I bought my hero I hadn't really seen any working Android phone, either stock or HTC. Now that I have seen both I think that the stock apps and interface are somehow saner than HTC's, and what can I say? I'd prefer to use them.
Why don't you run the Rosie remover. It will get you part of the way to where you want to go
Indeed! but I also prefer the stock browser, the stock music player, the stock calendar, the stock contact list and dialer... and so on. They look less flashy but handier to my taste.
I totally agree with, frandavid100. I would also love to have a vanilla android rom on my Hero.
Actually, why do magic roms not work with the hero? What kind of modification would you have to do for them to work?

I think that the hero rom is not like the win rom. i mean all the htc customisations superimposed on the windows ones. There, all we had to do was just to remove the htc ones and we automatically got the windows ones.
I guess android's different. we have to remove all the htc customisations and add android's ones. Problem is hero never had the android's applications. what could be done is take a magic rom, remove all the applications and try to port them to the hero.
Problems would definetely arise cause the 2 phones are not 100% identical. some software work on the magic but not on hero bla bla bla.
I know some stock apps do work with the hero. I have been able to use the stock calendar and browser in my hero by replacing the apk and odex files, however replacing the contacts app makes it hang.
We could try to make a list of what apps can be replaced and how, or maybe even make update.zip files specific for that, similar to modaco's rosie remover. How difficult would that be?

I think that you'll probably find that the difference here is that chefs with a Magic or G1 actively want to "upgrade" to the latest and greatest ROMs. So, when presented with a Hero ROM, they will make the effort to back port it to the hardware they have.
The situation with the Hero is a little different. Here we already have the "latest and greatest", so there is probably very little motivation for a chef to port what is essentially an earlier ROM to the Hero. What you need to find is a chef who has a Hero, who either wants to run stock android, or is interesting in the intellectual challenge!
So, it's not really the case that "the magic can almost run any rom" - it's that their are chefs with Magics who are building these ROMs.
Regards,
Dave
Thanks guys!
I knew i wasn't the only one who wanted a clean vanilla android rom on the hero. Like frandavid100 said before, till there's another "magic rom" or something, we could make a list of apps working on hero.
I've had the same thing with the Contacts.app. This makes the phone freeze, and after removing the battery it constantly reboots.
If we all together manage to make a list of apps, i can create an update.zip which does all the work.

Let's do a test. I know you can replace HTC's browser with Android's. I'm attaching the files for both, can you create an update.zip that removes the HTC files from /system/apps, and pushes the stock ones?
EDIT: failed to upload the files to the forum. You can get them here: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=TVL3Y8UE

I will do that tomorrow ok? I live in The Netherlands and its 09.35pm and i'm watching a movie
BTW: I also have a stock Magic/ION image. I can extract the apps from there as well. Tomorrow i'll try some apps.
Thanks for the effort guys!
Just another quick post. Below you'll see a list of apps which i'm going to try tomorrow. Please post request apps if i forget one.
- Contacts (probably doesn't work)
- Phone (unknown - probably same as contacts)
- Browser (probably works)
- Music Player (probably works)
- Messages/sms?
- Camera (unknown)
- Albums (probably no multitouch)
- Camcorder (don't know if this one is available)
- Calender (probably works)
- Calculator (unknown)
- Clock (don't know if this one is available)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BTW; If you guys want the original android lockscreen, just remove HtcLockScreen.apk/odex. After reboot you'll have the original android lockscreen where you have to press "menu" to unlock. Works faster and ofcourse no lag!
Hey, if you come back during the ads... can you point me to that stock rom? I'd like to try some of those too.
I can advance that Browser and Calendar do work (I'm using them right now).

I am sorry.. i'm at my girlfriend and don't have my laptop with me tomorrow i'll post some links to different roms we can work with. But i can assure you they won't work on the hero.
Im also going to try to port the sapphire keyboard to the hero. Don't know if someone already did this, i haven't used google yet.
Actually, the keyboard is one of the few things I like from HTC's customisations I'll give the sapphire one a try tho!

I'd just like to start off by saying its taken me a long and grueling week to figure out everything I needed to know just to get this rom booting on my hero. Hero is my first android phone and my first glimpse into phone modding overall, (XDA virgin xD) and it took me many hours of constantly searching and taking notes to understand how *most* things work within the operating system. With that I present this rom I ported from over at the magic forum which is based on nk02Mod 4.0.4. Original can be found here.
Alot of things dont work and thats why I'm posting this, I would like to see a group effort at achieving a fully functional vanilla android build on Hero. I still have plenty to learn and appreciate any type of input from any of the developers as to how to implement and make some modules of the hardware fully functional. Credits aswell to all those throughout this forum who have provided some sort of developer advice along the way, cause I can gaurantee that I probably read it at some point during this week.
Things I wish to know how to activate/make functional:
Bluetooth
Wi-fi
Automatic APN
Apps2SD (Some reason wont load them off the SD)
Camera
GPS?
If anyone knows how to fix any of these, please let me know ^^
Happy flashing and good luck! ^^

How exactly do you a port a rom for a different phone..i.e. stock android onto the hero.
Just change a few files around and swap the kernel over to make sure it boots on it and thats it ^^

What is it? Fusion!ROM is the idea of Fusing an HTC ROM with a AOSP ROM... it is based on a HTC port stripped down to resemble a AOSP ROM and is clean, very stable, and functional. This is not a Sense ROM
NO DONATIONS! FREE FREE FREE
Benefits...
Looks and feels like a AOSP ROM but with less bugs and more stability, more stuff really working with good speeds and no random reboots.
AOSP Camera always working at 5MP without random corruption, video too.
AOSP Keyboard has a background.
Gallery 3D is really working not just reloading itself when you rotate your phone.
Includes all stock AOSP apps. with the exception of the "in-call" dialler functions.
A2SD Working if you have a partition set.
Superuser permissions
No JIT = more stability I will test a JIT flavor soon.
The catch... some HTC stuff remain hidden because they are required by the frameworks.
The status bar is black because the HTC frameworks have been compiled with white fonts. Maybe some HEX editing can fix this.
When using the search feature the graphics are a little off by a few pixels but everything works 100% maybe I can fix this.
You need to complete the HTC setup wizard if you want USB disk mounting to work... I recommend skipping to the finish and then setting up your mail and other accounts after.
The Dialler is AOSP but the "in call" keypad is HTC I have not found a way to replace Phone.apk with the stock AOSP one.
All settings work but the Personalize functions are removed so they will cause a force close if you try and use them.
Animations are disabled by default... just enable them.
Using the HTC Lockscreen for now... the AOSP one has no background.
HTC Contacts and Call log remain in launcher "all apps" and are required for syncing to work but you don't have to use them at all and they won't show there ugly faces, just make sure you pick AOSP Contacts as your default when prompted.
Things to test...
Multi-language stuff... do locals work?
Google sync works but is it also possible to sync your contacts and calendar using HTC sync?
Internet tether is untested please report.
Feel free to report any bugs that affect your Android experience I'll do what I can to help.
Camera Greenish color? I get different results if I leave the white balance set to auto in various lighting and I think that is normal.
A full wipe is recommended...if you are coming from a different ROM.

If you are talking about Villain, you should stop a minute to think...
They ask for donations only, all the ROM´s eventually are avayable for free, they work hard to have every single port out there avayable for us,they have OTA that needs a server...
I havent donated as i dont do web transactions(got burned once) but i think its nice of them to have goodies for people that made donations and helps them...They could work on the ROM´s just for them, and we wouldnt have half the ROM´s we have nowadays(most of them are based in Villains builds)
So if you feel left out because others are using a ROM already and you dont,donate...they deserve it

you were faster than me searching, i was out lunching and haven't saw the topic reply e-mail
if you need assistance on testing, just PM me or let me know at the topic.
It would be nice to have this working, it's so annoying...
Why the f*ck do they include a light sensor if it doesn't work properly?!even after releasing fixes!?lol
Although I think I might know the answer...
"OK, so we gave them the hardware with buggy software to keep them busy...let them(users) figure out a fix, and this way we have time to develop some even nicer phones..."
The main problem here is that since we don't have HTC Sense sources, as they are proprietary, we can't modify system settings with an application which doesn't run as part of the system.
My understanding therefore is that this can be done in two ways:
1) Writing a kernel module which sets the appropriate/specified values on boot (I don't have enough experience to do that) or modifying the default kernel values.
2) Modify values in /sys (wherever they may be hiding) which will be reset any time you reboot, and also may get overwritten by the system at will.
That's my limited understanding anyway. If anyone would like to shed more light on this then please feel free to, or any other ways how this could be achieved...
Moved to Q&A. Please don't post question threads in Development.
fair enough
could we simply start an "official light sensor level developement for sense UI" thread or something like that ?
+1 guys we really neeeed that **** ;p
tks for your work !
There seem to be lots of ROM options coming to fruition, but they all seem to be half baked and development is slow. Why not have the Dev's team up and make one awesome ROM? It is getting hard to choose between things like a working GPS or a working camera(for example only).

Well first of all what do you term as slow ? Samsung gave us ICS in 8 months with major bugs, withdrew it and then released it again after 2 months. Whereas the devs here had already resolved those bugs.
Again CM10 is a tough one as this is the only device with CM10. The target was end of the year but look at it we already have CM10.1 as well. So the devs here are faster than the team at Samsung who get paid for it..
As the base is the same drivers and source written for CM10, all the ROMs based on it will have the same bugs.
GPS and camera are no more an issue. I've been using the camera on my CAMP rom and no issues. Also past 2 days I've driven for 600 kms and no issues with GPS and everytime it locks under 30 secs and works very well.
For me the only major bugs left are
1. Keyboard backlight - known solution
2. Sym key - known solution
Rothorick is working on the above two and will surely come up with a fix soon. The term half baked is not something you can use for ROMs being used as daily drivers!!!
Sent from my SGH-I927
Just be glad we get anything at all. We only have one main dev and only a few others helping the process. These roms WILL get finnished but only in due time. Just take some time to relax and be patient. I have faith in dman and all his hard work is greatly appreciated here. Its the holidays let dman have his time to himself.

Errrr..... current CM10.1 has everything but bluetooth and the keyboard backlight. And dman is cracking the whip on bluetooth right now.
Also, the way you word the question betrays a misunderstanding in the process. Most of the ROM developers don't have the knowledge and experience to troubleshoot hardware compatibility problems. We have dman, that's about it. The rest of us, at best, only know enough to gesture furtively in the correct direction or unearth an important path or config file. So, fixes are implemented by dman and rolled out in his sources and ROMs, and his sources are then used by other people to build their ROMs.

For me the only major bugs left are
1. Keyboard backlight - known solution
2. Sym key - known solution
Rothorick is working on the above two and will surely come up with a fix soon. The term half baked is not something you can use for ROMs being used as daily drivers!!!

You give me way too much credit. I only figured out half of the keyboard backlight problem -- the other half necessarily must come from dman as I don't know where to begin on getting the Android core to poke the sysfs.
As for the keyboard, we have a kludge for the Sym key. I'm working on a proper solution, as well as a fix for the voice search and dotcom keys, but in both cases, because we need changes in core classes, it's more a matter of open-source politics than technical troubleshooting.

Yup, the special hardware keys are a issue in CM on every slider phone. Hope you get a proper solution to this, so we don't have to fool around with framework-res and keyboard files

It literally comes down to submitting patches to CyanogenMod and AOSP and hoping they see the need. We could just make builds with the patch, but we can't call them CyanogenMod or AOSP then.
Could we compile a list of devices that need extra keycodes? It'd definitely bolster our case to say "these 42 phones are directly affected by the issue solved by this patch", plus I can be more thorough.

Can you elaborate on the the code change you are planning to submit. We can still have a patch on top of CM or AOSP, just like we have so many proprietary files from samsung.

We need to change certain core classes like KeyEvent and a few others (there's a list in the comments in KeyEvent.java) as well as a few other places to connect the keycodes to their correct behavior. And it needs to be done in a way that works globally for all phones, not just the Glide. Which is, more than anything, a matter of convincing devs bigger than any of us that we know what we're doing, we didn't break anything, and it's a necessary change.
