N64oid laggy - HTC One X

Anybody notice that N64oid runs slightly laggy on the One X? It was smoother on my Desire HD

I'm playing Zelda on my phone, and its running very smooth.

Don't get me wrong the games work pretty much full speed but every few seconds the game will jerk and slowdown slightly, I've noticed this on both Mario 64 and Goldeneye. I shall have to try some other games too

I can confirm that games such as Mario Kart and Mario 64 have slight lag spikes, but I really have no other material to compare this to. So I can't say if performance is worse or better than, say, an SII.

Ah that's ok, I thought it was me. Must be a Tegra 3 thing, hopefully they'll fix it soon enough. Both Mario games were fine on my old Desire HD. Ah well at least the emulator works haha

I suspect the emulator isn't even multi-threaded, so there is a big room for improvement.

I hope the developer implements it, Goldeneye would be perfect with a slight speed increase
Cheers for testing anyway guys, I'm glad it wasn't just me

I don't know what you were running on your DHD, but when I had the Galaxy Nexus it would do the same thing, so I'm thinking it might have something to do with ICS. Then again, if you're playing in full screen mode and such, there are many more pixels to push when emulating as well.

Same little lags here. Strange because it ran perfectly smoothly on my Prime on ICS (video demo at my youtube channel). Runs worse than the SGSII or Galaxy Note.

On my DHD I was running virtuous affinity (gingerbread)
I am guessing its caused either by ICS or the emu being optimized for single core (most likely)

Can I ask you guys how you connect to play you N64oids? Virtual keys i guess some use but there must be a way to connect via USB or bluetooth, imagine having all that set-up via Media Link HD
Thats one thing I wanna do, play Zelda on my screen with a remote via the HTC on the TV

I use the touchscreen personally, it works ok I guess. I believe you can get a bluetooth game controller for android though or use a Wii remote

Cool, reason I ask is because it would be really cool to play N64oid and use a remote via Bluetooth or USB OTG while having Media Link connected to a nice HD TV

Its the games themselves which cause the issue remember emulation is not always 100 %
U can grab a ps3 controller and use that

must be the screen resolution which is around double that of the desire.

Sorry to break it to you guys, but I'm pretty sure it's the phone. I'm using the exact same ROMs, which run perfectly on my Prime, and my Note. That suggests it is neither the ROMs, nor the resolution. A bit baffling considering the hardware in the Prime is near identical. Others are noticing gaming performance doesn't appear to be living up to expectations, so makes me think it is something in HTCs implementation (I recall similar problems with the Sensation at release).
In relation to the gaming setup you're talking about above, it's sweet - here are some demos of me running a similar setup with other devices:

Probably ICS, many apps need configuring.

If you experience some annoying hiccups during emulation, just go to engine settings and set the maximum frame skip to 0, it's 3 by default.

Max Payne

One of my all time favorite games is Max Payne. It is getting old but I still play it every now and then.
I was just wondering if it is possible to port it to android and play it on my desire.
Has any of you heard or read something about it or is it simply to old for anyone to bother.
Hope theres a coding wizard out there with the same interest in the game.
The best you could hope for would be an emulator but that seems far off. PSX is the best they have so far. Try Resident Evil (it's better )

doom/quake is bad either, well I don't play these games but I was impressed when I played it on my phone for the first time!
hope this helps! good Luck!
Running a 3D game on the Desire is one thing, being able to play it is another... The Desire lacks descent input for gaming : no physical keyboard, or at the very least real screen multitouch. I've been playing FF7 on the psx emu and it's a real pain to control... I can't even imagine how awful it would be having the keyboard + mouse controls mapped to the touch screen in maxpayne...
Lol u ask a bit too much from this phone, it cant do magic.
Yea, just a thought, could have been sweet though. Good thing I have my trusted laptop..
Thanks for the input to the rest. My initial guess was that the screen would be crowded due to the onscreen controls, second that, although it is an old game, it would still require a decent device to run it.

[Q] Has Anyone Tried FPse Yet?

Has anyone tried the new PS1 emu yet? The word generally is that it is miles ahead of psx4droid, however i dont have a G2/desire z yet. Im looking at getting this phone as my next purchase.
Yes, ofcourse. It is way much better than psx4droid! There is a thread on xda discussing FPse!
trust me its a hell lot better than psx, fpse is so much cooler and it runs a lot smoother than psx

The word would be correct. Just don't confuse savestates with loadstates. That made me lose about 4 hours of FFVII when I was drunk. Its badass though. I went online and found a FFVII savegame and put it on my SD, fpse read it just fine and I was back in business.

Was using it back in my WinMo days, now I'm using it on the DZ and I love it, the hardware keyboard makes all the difference.
Runs nice and smooth (I play without sound, though, personal preference).
FPSE is ok. a lot of the games that work on psx4droid, dont on FPSE, which can get quite annoying.
But the frame rate and the over all smoothness is better on FPSE.
AND if you get sixaxis pair tool from the market, you can play the games with a ps3 controller (FPSE)! The controller doesnt work however on psx4droid.
(Just a little input)

[Q] Zen Pinball - does it stutter for you?

My One X is running perfectly smoothly with everything EXCEPT Zen Pinball, which is meant to be optimised for Tegra 3. It is almost unplayable, as it jerks every few seconds and suffers from severe slowdown - which is a shame, as the game seems pretty good (And is free).
Have any of you guys had the same problems? And if you haven't tried, could youc heck please?
Same for me...
Same here seems the game needs some optimization for the One X, try to contact the develloper i will do the same.
Yes, stutters here too. As it was the first Tegra game I played on my new HOX, I was really disappointed. Luckily, everything else seems to run perfectly. Hope we get a fix for this soon... disappointing that the developer released this (presumably) without having tested it on the One X first (even if it is free) as some users will see this as a weakness with the device rather than the app.
GTA III is also choppy like hell for me along with Zen pinball.
Same here. Fruit Ninja too.
Me too.
I found GTA3 to be choppy too but it's playable at least.

Hmm Fruit Ninja seems to be running OK for me, but, to my extreme distress, Homerun Battle 3D is not smooth at all! That is like one of my favourite mobile games!!!!
Are developers going to be bothering to sort this sort of stuff out? I mean surely, the One X is more than powerful enough to handle stuff like this no?
Yes unplayable here too..; Along with alot of other games; Mostly all "ball" games. Love to play teeter when waiting somewhere, ball stutters over the screen instead of running smooth.
All fruit slice games stutter when you slice the fruit and don't run smooth; Wonder if this gets better with updates.
Try glowball it's a proper demonstration of what the one x can do.
Does make mine get hot really quickly tho.

same here with zen and gta3 maybe a custom rom might solve the problem?
getting weird lag even in built-in stock teeter game ?!
Just installed it on my device this morning and yes it lags during the game rendering but user interface is responsive.
I have written an email to the devs let's hope they will fix it.
Works fine for me !
I just fell back in my youth and played a couple of pinball-games after I had red about this issue. Wow, was good fun still I prefer the bigger screen on my Prime.
The responsiveness of the H1X is a bit laggy but the game goes flawless so I can adjust to it.
Test passed, once again I am happy I am not having any issue with my H1X.
Well done HTC.
Yeah Zen pinball is laggy for me as well! shame really because i love it on 360 & PS3. Hopefully it'll be fixed soon.
Surprised that Teeter is laggy as well!! It runs smoother on my Desire...strange!
Game was made for Tegra 2. Either the Game needs an Update or the One X...

Well yea you'd think so... Gamelofts version of optimising for nexus 7 means allowing it to run it. It's not optimised at all. For example, there was a hox version of modern combat 3, which ran beautifully. Nexus 7 play store downloads a version that runs like a really quick slide show. nova 3 on the hox, the version I tried, had all effects like the iphone4 version. It did run like crap also. The nexus play store version runs similar, but doesn't have the smoke and lighting effects. Dark knight runs steppy, etc...etc... Hamdir is running a thread to make tegra games 60fps... This is a whole other issue, getting games above 30fps on a cutting edge chipset. Especially as I've seen my friend play nova 3 on his sensation at what I perceived as 60fps. It looked amazing!!

man again u r not being fair, I played on the sensation its 60fps with every effect disabled, n I mean dead flat no reflection on any surface
mass effect v1.30 on the hox had much less effect n ran over 60fps
also sgs3 runs nova3 at 60fps with everything on, ripetide runs very badly
effects on the hox for nova is a luck issue the game gets confused by the 3d dots menu and turns them on
with a custom kernel like faux004b6 nova3 runs very well
the gaming app, faux kernel and my guide proves there is nothing wrong with tegra its just software issues
all HTC has to do is include a performance profile

I believe I'm being pretty fair? Gameloft need to pull their finger it and get optimising for tegra. Whilst I get what youre doing on hox, and the need for performance profiles, the same issues with Gameloft games are present on the nexus 7, whikt tegra games are just smoother out of the box than hox was. Its gamelofts issues here, not tegra.

The framerate makes it unplayable for me at stock, it's just too much of a distraction.
I'm waiting on a gameloft update. (sigh)
However, with faux and game booster app it plays pretty good with a decent framerate , but still annoys me that it's still not the framerate it should be & not what iOS users get.
Stock users - I'd say not to bother yet, as the framerate is choppy hell.

Sorry, (in the nicest way possible) .... you must be blind if you think the framerate is ok .
Go have a look at the trailer on the play store, that's how it's supposed to run.
Everyone I've spoken to has mentioned the very poor framerate, even android police the other day mentioned it to be 'definitely choppy' in the pre-review.
It's not Tegra 3 compatible, not really.
It runs at terrible framerates on both my Nexus 7 & HOX.
It may work, but we have to wait on Gameloft for the fix.
This game doesn't even run completely smooth at all on base 2.05, faux kernel and game booster app - stock 1.29 has no chance.
......
Unless your using a U.S snapdragon S4 version, not sure how it runs on that HOX.

Lol, that may be true for NFS, but the size of gameloft games are wayyyyy too big in size.
To think Torchlight is under 600mb for the PC, makes you wonder how a racing game for a phone could be 1.3gb. - ouch.
i don't think the price of an app is an excuse for poor coding - the game shouldn't have been released yet, not in its current state.
I've heard the SGS3 also has framerate issues with this game (just not and severe as most of GL games for Tegra3 devices) and that's operating on a year old GPU, so it shouldn't have optimisation issues - but even here, it does.
But, HOPEFULLY - they will release a fix soon, and not wait a month like they did for batman on Tegra 3.
Sadly, gameloft ain't like madfinger who will respond to you quickly and issue a fix quickly if it's their problem.

Yeah, unfortunaly i've sent an email to them regarding the accelerometer problems, sayd they will investigate the problem, but so far,nothing...i am not an expert programmer,i understand some codes, but i mean, how hard can an accelerometer problem be to solve it?
Luckly that i've got used with the touchscreen "virtual buttons",otherwise i wouldn't played this game.
As for the size of them,i maybe saying something stupid....but...aren't the guys at gameloft using Unity to make the graphics like the guys who made Dead Trigger?I tried like 1 or 2 years ago Unity and the graphics made with that program always use to much space.
Reached championship 9 so far .
Yeah, I think android police agreed with most of us.
Hopefully, gameloft will take note with some bad publicity & make a quick fix.
It definitely seems to be affecting all android devices.
Gameloft should definitely come with a disclaimer warning that it is optimized for iOS only.

Graphics And Performance
Even with the above foibles, Asphalt 7 could be a good game. The deal breaker for me is the overwhelming mediocrity of the graphics. Judging from the screenshots on the Play Store page, this should be a gorgeous game. Instead, it's just average. Even then, only on some devices. On the Nexus 7 the texture resolution is absolutely terrible. Everything in the environment looks muddy. The cars aren't bad, but there is noticeable aliasing along the edges.
I also looked at things on the Galaxy Nexus, and the textures were a little better. I was still not impressed with the overall fuzziness of the roads and buildings, though. The jaggies are not as prevalent here, possibly because the screen is smaller, and I can't see them as well. For whatever reason, performance is questionable on both devices. Both will get a spot of lag from time to time, and the Nexus 7 seems to have a lower frame rate The brightness also looks too high, making the game oddly washed-out. There are a few places that I could barely see where I was going because the gentle blue track markers blended in too well with the background. Turning my device's brightness down did nothing to fix this. I could also see distant objects drawing as I rocketed along. That should not happen on any modern device.
For 1.4GB of game data, I expected stunning graphics. I really feel like some of the smaller Need For Speed games look better than this. Asphalt 7 is not ugly, but it's just not pretty like the screenshots would lead you to believe.
Conclusion
On the surface, Asphalt 7 is a fine game. The controls are solid, and there are plenty of tracks and race types. I can even deal with the in-app purchases because they don't seem exploitative. This is essentially a $7 game that you can have for $0.99, so dropping a few dollars on better cars seems alright. The learning curve is steep, but not to a fault However, the requirement that you have internet access is beyond ridiculous. Things fall apart for me when it comes to visuals and performance. I'm just disappointed in how this game runs on the Nexus 7, and it's not terribly good on the Galaxy Nexus. Lag, low frame rates, and blurry graphics are not what I expect out of 1.4GB of game data. If this game was free, I'd definitely suggest you pick it up to try. As it stands, you could spend $0.99 if you like Asphalt racing games, but there's just nothing that special here.
