[Q] Any Suggestions on a dropped phone - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

OK hopefully you guys with tons of Epic 4g experience can help.
My wife dropped her rooted Epic 4G and now it will only boot into recovery.
I have tried to wipe the phone completely, re-flashed the rom, downloaded a new rom and tried to flash that and even considered trying, dare I say it, try to un-root the phone.
It doesnt seem to be able to get past the samsung splash screen. Do any or you masters of this phone have any suggestions on how to fix this. Could it be something with the hardware? And is it worth trying to get it fixed with the new phones about to come out.
Grateful to all that help

Flash it back to stock via odin.
Give me a sec to link you the how to video.
Make sure you have a nonstock usb.. otherwise you might end up soft bricking it.
If this video doesn't seem within your abilities then I can remotely do this if you'd like via teamviewer.

it boots into recovery, so it's fixable. do what uber said. odin it back to stock. if you know how to do so and need the tar files, just let us know.

Something like this happened recently when my lady dropped her phone. It would take like 20 minutes to boot up, and would act extremely slow to where it was useless. Cwm worked fine, and even an odin to stock wouldn't save it. We had to file a claim and replace it.

[Q] [Help] Girlfriend wants root

Hello all... Recently my girlfriend and I had purchased the Epic Touch 4g for her. She absolutely loves the phone but the signal strength isn't the best. I have had a Droid 1 for 2 years now and have flashed roms/kernels on a weekly basis for the past year and a half. Can anyone recommend a good starter Rom/Kernel? Is flashing a rom/kernel for the Epic Touch just as easy as flashing for the Droid? I've done some research and I am a bit overwelmed. It seems like clockworkmod recovery is being ran on the Epic Touch but the process for flashing is different? (maybe not, but like I said, I'm a tad overwelmed ).. Also, are there any tweaks after root that would improve signal strength? If anyone can help me out to get us started I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance.
-Mike
I recommend starburst rom v1.6.. it comes with LostKernel which is a good kernel to use.. for root though, there are dif. methods, i originally rooted mine with Zedomax Kernel through Odin.. fairly easy .. so get it rooted, and i'd go with starburst v1.6 which when flashing it through CWM once you have root, also flashes the lostkernel
I recommend Starburst. Runs sooo smooth and its the only ROM that I see being actively updated. Viper just got into the game so if you don't like touchwiz, you can flash his ROM too which uses another launcher but i would say equally great. Comes down to preference and what works best.
And to get root and clockwork, I followed bubbys
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1287776
It seems to get root you have to use odin, but once thats done you can use clockwork to flash ROMs. If you get issues Odin is there for support.
Thanks! Too bad my girlfriend starts work in an hour
Take a look at this thread Id really recommend to check the links I have linked to save you some pain....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1309078
So wait... after reading that thread it says that the bootloader keeps a record of everytime you flash with Odin? So if something happens to her phone and we need to take it in, they will know we rooted it?
A good reason to use starbursts rom is because its just way smoother some how and he stream lined the rom and did a bunch of tweaks that make noticably fast/smoother. That's the reason most are using it

Yes, but you can reset the counter some how. Just do a search for reset counter and you should find the thread

Cool, thanks, I got worried for a little bit there... I mean, we got it rooted and everything just fine, but I failed to mention to my girlfriend that there might be a slight problem if we tried to take the phone in ... I figured that problem would get solved eventually but it's good to know I'm in the clear
yeah I wouldn't worry about it, chances are if you flash everything stock theres still a counter chances are they wont notice or pay it much attention. its possible but, I've had friends take their evo in with security off and everything else flashed stock and it was ok.
Bring her to me I will root her. Don't bring your cable I will use mine to plug in her smoothly in order to root through odin.

You can use a jig, it will get rid of the yellow triangle on bootscreen and bring the counter down to zero.
The jig costs $7 MAX, all you do is plug it into microusb while phone is on, and the phone reboots automatically, and everything is back to normal. Process takes about 30 seconds max, and you can use the jig multiple times, with how many ever samsung phones, it is NOT a one time use deal.

Need help! Can't boot phone

Hello all! I've been trying to fix my phone for a few days, and can't seem to do it, so I thought I'd make a post regarding it.
I believe the beginning of this originated after trying to go back to gingerbread from fc15 ICS. To learn from my mistakes, this is NOT good, right? lol. probably because fc15 wasn't made for gingerbread?
I was able to get into CWM, but I couldn't perform a recovery or install a new ROM. At this time (after trying a whole bunch of things to fix my device), I may or may not be rooted, but I'm almost certain I am not because I can't get into CWM. If I have to lose all of my data, I guess I will (I didn't have an SD card at the time - just got one), but if there's any way I would like to keep my data. Also, at this point, I'm at the "formware upgrade encountered an issue. please select revoery mode in kies and try again". I have been able to get rid of this screen in the past, but I'd like to know the best rout to go from here.
I have read about bricked devices for awhile now, but to attempt to link the hazy definition I have with experience, is my device bricked?
Please help me!
Thank you.

I'm sorry, just now seeing the sticky regarding bricked device prevention. But I'd like to know how to identify a bricked device (besides not being able to do anything at all - which isn't my case), and if I have any option at this point.

If you can get into download mode then Odin back to el26 like most instructions say to. Once you have a working GB then you can make a decision on where to go from there. Others might have better advice as that's gonna kill all you're data.

thanks for the reply! after flashing stockcwm-el26, i was able to get back into cwm. however, from there i'm still having trouble. it will not boo. i'm still going to try a whole bunch of stuff lol

Hopefully someone will comment on my suggestion... If you can get into cwm then I would use calc's format all zip then flash a ROM that has a great record of smooth install.I personally have never had a problem with Blazer so that's what I would flash. Like I said, hopefully someone will either agree or have a better solution before you go with my idea. Good luck and make sure if you get it going you share your leanings!

Best bet is to download one of sfhub's one click root methods since your phone can still get into download mode. Doesn't matter what u already have on ur phone as his method will wipe all and replace all as long as you can get into download mode with your computer recognizing ur phone.

sorry for responding so late!
thank you both very much. i tried the program, and was still unable to recover the device - it always hung right at the end, unfortunately. a replacement device is in the mail, and i should get it very soon (thankfully for free).
another question i suppose i would like to ask...on cwm, it says i can mount internal storage as a mass-storage-device. when i try to do this, nothing pops up. is there a way to do this and, potentially, recovering my data?

[Q] Sprint Galaxy S III Rooted/Installed ROM... Now won't power on. Help!

Hi everyone. I'm new to the forum and I'm looking for a little help today.
I rooted my new Sprint Galaxy S III using Odin3-v3.04, and CWM_SuperUser_v3.0.7. Afterwards I rebooted and all was good.
I then downloaded I9300_Omega_v6.0_XXALF6 ROM and loaded on my phone and rebooted into recovery to install the ROM. I went through the install process, selected remove bloatware and installed. When finished I checked the reboot phone and clicked finish. The phone turned off and didn't ever turn back on.
I have pulled the battery and tried to power on using recovery, download mode and just power but nothing works.
Anyone have any idea what I can do?
Thank you for your time and help.

development area has a thread for that:

ONLY use ROMs that you'll find here in these threads not the I9300; that s a different phone from ours.
Thanks I'll check there.

New phone on the way!
I was able to get a replacement sent from Sprint. Had to go to a corporate store and have a tech look at the phone and they agreed it was toast...
Luckily they didn't know it was due to my failed attempt to load an unsupported ROM.
Lesson learned... new phone should be in by the end of the week.
I'll be waiting for a supported ROM this time.

Oh man tell me about it, I almost stupidly went on to the CM9 nightlies and downloaded the I9300 version before I thought to myself, "well wait a minute, that's not my model number!"
Duh, shoulda had a V8.
I didnt install a GSM rom but still managed to brick somehow. Didnt touch any system files or do anything to where i should be bricked either. Any idea when a full stock Odin package will be made? My phone has been bricked for almost 2 days now
Edit: i started a tread here a few days ago -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1731416 if anyone cares to look or has any advice for me
Thanks

My phone got stuck booting, so I tried to install the omega rom. The install worked well, and I clicked "reboot." Now the phone won't turn on. I can't get to ODIN or recovery anymore.
Did you guys find any fixes?

What happened is that you flashed a rom that was meant for the international version of the S3 and your on the US version. The only fix I have found is to send it to mobiletechvideos.com. I did and they say they can fix it and maybe save my data I have on it ( I just sent it in)
My fingers are crossed for the data recovery but as far as the phone I am going to send it for a exchange anyway.
Welp, I'm sad to say I just did the same thing too. Should have read. I'm a stinkin noob at this. I installed the I9300 version on a US version phone. Has there been any more development on this? Is the hardware fried, or is there a fix through that mobiletechvideos.com that was mentioned? What was the outcome of that, Taygutta, if you don't mind me re-bringing back up a potentially painful topic?? This thread made me a little sick, since it's my brother's new phone (someone else that knew what they were doing rooted it for him but he didn't like the rom, so I thought I would help him find a few other options to try flashing.)
Anyway, any confirmation that I'm buying my brother a new phone (so I can emotionally prepare for the purchase) or are there some other options?
There's one more thing you can try. There's a little device called a USB Jig. It was made for SGS-2 to clear the yellow triangle and reset flash counts in ODIN mode. It also puts your phone in ODIN mode by simply plugging it into the USB port of a powered down phone. Once in ODIN mode, you can reflash a stock ROM, recovery, etc. You can buy these for around $20 or less on the web.
If this does not work, I'm afraid nothing will.
Good luck.

Help! phone won't turn on (t959d koodo)

Hi,
I just got the phone and flashed a custom recovery. I flashed a new rom (liquidsmooth) and it looked like it was successful. I selected reboot and the screen shut off. Now, It won't turn on. It's possible that the battery died but shouldn't it turn on again once I plug in the usb cable? Is it possible to brick the device from cwm?
thanks
Dear lord I hope that's a typo because this is the t989(d) forums. If it is a typo and you're using a t989 then you probably need to wipe cache/dalvik.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-T989
As Mr. Mintharis said... I'm hoping as well that you had a typo and you didnt flash a T989 (GALAXY S2 TMobile) rom on a (GALAXY S) device. If so your probably hard bricked. If that was a typo and you did flash a rom and it wont turn on then there may be a few problems that are solvable. I got a few questions.
1. DId you do a factory reset before installing? Did you wipe system?
2. Can you get into CWM?
3. Can you get into Download Mode?
If you cant get into download mode, recovery, or get the phone to boot then you are in serious trouble because the phone is a a fancy paper weight. If you can however, you could try doing a full reset on all the settings and deleting cache/dalvik and then reflashing and trying again. However you may be in luck since you said you just got the phone. I'm assuming you got it from your carrier (I'm guessing its T-Mobile, idk any other carriers for this device) and they will replace a broken device (that does not have extensive physical damage or water damage) within 20 days of purchase date. Since your phone is hard bricked they will do it completely for free with no charge (usually... if they do.. it will be about 5$) and then you're good. They will overnight a phone to you and you just send your old one back when you get it (MAKE SURE TO ASK FOR DIRECTIONS ON HOW TO PROPERLY SEND IT BACK!).
Sorry for the long post but wanted to be through and give you alot of answers in 1 time so we dont drag this post out.
That's my mistake, it was supposed to read t989d.
1) I did do a factory resets
2) & 3) I can't turn on the phone or get into download mode
I bought it from koodo (carrier in Canada) yesterday. I'm going to try to exchange it today; hopefully they'll do it. For future references, is there a specific way I should be flashing? I used to have a t959, the t-mobile vibrant, and never had any issues with cwm because it never touched download mode. Anyways, thanks for the replies.
Edit: I did flash using odin which hung a couple of times. Regardless, i eventually got it back to original condition by flashing the custom recovery (by odin with green pass) and doing a nandroid backup. The bad odin flashes should have been negated when I did nandroid backup, no?
You said you had the problems after you flashed liquidsmooth? Exactly which file did you download and flash from the site?

Can't flash back to stock!!!

So here's my problem, I got the note 2 a few days ago, and as with all my other android phones the first thing I did was root it and start flashing roms. Well the first thing i tried to flash was the note2core kernel, which completely disabled any sort of connection i had to the sprint network.
After doing a restore in TWP, i'm still having the same problems. its now at the point where i have network connection (texts/calls) but have no internet (4g/3g). When i try hands free activation, the 4g symbol pops up and it looks like its connecting, but when i try to use data in anything else, it just says no connection and the 4g symbol is no longer there.
So after all this, i decided screw it i'm just gonna go back to stock, i'd rather have a stock working phone than a half functioning one. Using the note 2 toolkit, i downloaded and extracted the stock rom, but it keeps getting stuck on sboot.bin and failing, leaving me now with a phone that doesn't do anything but tell me to connect to kies and do an emergency restore, which i've tried to even less success. all other roms just get stuck in bootloop, and the only thing i can do now is flash recovery that came with the toolkit through odin which will let the phone boot up fine but i'm back to square one, no internet. Someone please help me, i've researched this through the forums for hours and hours now, it seems some ppl have the same problem but no answer. if i can just get back to factory form i'd be happy. Thanks to anyone that can help me with this miserable problem.
**update** things have gotten worse, my twp backup no longer exists and i'm stuck in an endless bootloop
Damn budy just days ago? and already messed this great device up. Dont worry I'm sure is just a hiccup but nothing I can help with. Kernel you mention tho ive never heard

The sboot.bin will fail its a safety thing samsung put in to stop from going back to older boot loaders ... There is a workaround for it...please read more before flashing kernels that are not for this phone .... that was the first and worst thing you did ... note2core is not a sprint kernel ...
