I am talking about Gingerbread, not ICS.
Every android game I play, especially graphics-intensive ones, begin to intermittently freeze up and go to their 'pause' screens between every few seconds or every few minutes (depends on the game). I always need to hit 'resume' to get back into whatever game I'm playing. This has never happened before, even though I'm playing some of the same games I've used since the EI22 Samsung update (and associated custom ROMs).
I've had this error on every ROM I've used since my upgrade to EL30. This includes the completely stock EL30 on BML, RandomRom Thunderhawk IV EL30 on MTD, and the AOSP FC09 on MTD; I've used the same kernel on my phone since January (Shadow 3.0+), but now with it built on EL30. I am running Android 2.3.6 and reluctant to try CM9 or 7 until all kinks have been worked out; I need my phone to always at least be able to work as a phone/text/photo/email/internet/GPS device, and based on the development forums, that's currently far from guaranteed.
I've tried tweaking my CPU governor, completely shutting off overclocking programs, and even using a RAM manager with absolutely no luck.
Does anyone have the same issue, and if you've got a workaround, what is it? Any other kernels or completely reliable ROMs I should try?

cm7 would be nice, but i was under the impression that there were still 'little things here and there' (i think that was the exact quote from one of the reserved posts) that needed fixing. lol i hope that doesn't mean problems with things like 4G connectivity after WiFi switching, video playback etc. I don't have enough posts yet to ask there, even though i've been a lurker for almost a year, so i'm forced to ask here. thanks for replying!
will kernelsanderv5 work for ROMs other than cm7? i'll search for it, too.

haha, the great marcusant! thanks for replying to my first post. yeah, i'd love to use your nyan colonel, but that'd require me to move to cm9, which i don't see myself doing until it's outta beta. i appreciate all your work, and i noticed i used a ROM (CopyPaste) that apparently was based on MarcusantRom. It was great, except that it would slow up, lock up, and finally freeze up after opening several apps in succession.. or browsing image-heavy websites. sorry :\
thanks also for posting a poll for what we'd like to see fixed in cm9 - once i can actually spare some time to mess around (and once i get past this damn 10-post minimum), i'll try it and add to the responses.

Look for the CM7 version. You can get the CM7 RC from get.cm under epicmtd. Then get Nyan CM7 from the development section. You can also try the v6 supercharger scripts.

SUCCESS!! I ended up installing the current EL30 TW Samurai kernel instead of the older one I had on my SD card from a few months back, and boy does it kick ass. It has a higher framerate cap than the shadowkernel, and doesn't freeze up annoyingly during games. I have a feeling that it is because of something called a 'memory deadlock fix' that was included in the samurai version from last month, but not mentioned at all in the shadowkernel. Thanks, everyone, for your input. You guys/gals are great! BTW, I've stuck to qbking's amazingly professional RandomROM and now have absolutely ZERO issues of ANY sort. This includes 4G/WiFi switching, MMS, LED, and even little things like GPS locktimes. It is by far better in every way than stock, too, especially with the keyboard fix. Props to you, qbking - especially for making everything work so well while being a new dad!

I have spent the past week trying out several gingerbread ROMs trying to find one that I'd stable enough for daily use. The most impressive one I used was ASC Bamboozled v1.1. It was super quick and had some cool animations like the TV animation when you turned it off. I would like something kinda of like that. I know that the gingerbread ROMs have a reboot issue and that doesn't bother me too much. It is a slight annoyance but not a deal breaker. With the source of gingerbread from Samsung floating around I was wondering if there were any stable ROMs yet.

cm7 is the best. no reboots but it hasn't no 4g, which suxs.
I thought about cm7 but I heard there is a issue with voice calls and some of the standard things didn't work. Has that changed with the source? Nit worried about 4g seeing I don't live in a spot that has it. Yep throwing away $10 a month. I hate it.

Until the EXT4 kernel is released from source, find yourself a good stock RFS prerooted EH17 ROM to Odin and then Odin in mkasick's kernel from the new source. I don't think anyone put together a new ROM with the new kernel yet besides CM7. Or wait a few more days and I am sure there will be some.

Of all the GB roms, Thunderhawk has been the most stable for me.
Hands down acs ics. Its super stable and fast and its ics themed. cyanogen is also great if you don't mind losing 4g and video. Although battery on both roms are fantastic. I get about 18 hours average on acs and about 23 on cyanogen. And thats with a stock battery with moderate use. Ive been switching back and forth for a while now. But been running acs as my default rom. I havent had one problem with it at all. No reboots, lags, gps lock issues, or things of that sort.

Here's the thing about 'stability'. All the GB roms look wonderful out of the gate and perform flawlessly for 3-4 days and then start to disintegrate, act out, cause FCs and freezes. If you want serious stability, you need to use a Froyo rom. If you don't mind a few inconveniences, CM7 is the way to go. It is the most stable of the GB roms and many phone owners are very excited about its possiblities down the road. Honestly, I work in a hi-rise in San Francisco and I don't even miss the 4G, the phone is that fast. The battery life alone is worth the call sound and video issues which are minor at best. IMHO.
everyones phone is different
some people have issues with cm7 and acs ics, and some people dont. so best idea is test drive both roms, to see have your phone acts it them. and with the video issue there are other players in the both markets that can help with that. and with cm7 its just plug and play no extra steps to get it to work and with acs ics there other things you have to do to get it to rite.
ACS ICS seems to be pretty good so far. No major concerns to this point, albeit early stages of testing.

Don't you know not to invest in something for features it may have one day... that's what got us into trouble with the Epic 4G in the first place (6 month late Froyo, endlessly delayed Gingerbread, TV Out, FM radio...)!
Anyways, whenever someone asks "what's the best rom?", you'll always get very biased responses. You'll generally hear cries of "ACS!" and "Cyanogen!". While the acclaim is generally deserved, my own testing hasn't yet shown anything too fantastic in their current GB versions. ACS ICS has a somewhat glitchy launcher, but if you like it have at it. CM7 did not have anything special I could find, nor did it perform to my typical battery standards.
Try them all out, each has their own merits and each phone performs differently with different roms. Don't forget the others like Hurricane or Urban.
Or you can just follow the crowd .
When I came to XDA, I read the threads under each ROM to see what the features were and what problems people were having. People coming here now are too damn lazy to do this and want us to tell them exactly what to put on their phone. I would lke nobody to answer threads on "what's the best ROM" and maybe people will stop being lazy and read.
If everyone liked the same thing there would be only 1 rom. Read like kenny and random suggested. Find the one with the most features that you personally need or want. I try just about every rom on here and always find my way back to thunderhawk. It just has the best mix of all the features I need working.

thanks in advance.
This will NOT work on stock-based roms. If you'd like, I can post one for them later today. No guarantee it will work though. I don't run stock.
And I don't know what you are talking about. I've been running CM7 since late December. I have no bugs, it is butter-smooth, everything works, and best of all...being CM7, it is themable anyway you wish. For example, CM7 with the Lucid theme found here https://market.android.com/details?id=com.sonny.theme.lucid&hl=en
is beautiful. Add some ICS themed widgets, and it looks like you are running something even prettier than ICS.
No problems with battery life either. Been getting 18 hours according to Battery Left with a 1.8Ghz OC. You keep saying CM7 is an Alpha but quite honestly, there aren't any bugs on it (provided you keep the GPS on).

You want ics transitions. Go to uot kitchen. Upload what it asks. Go to the mod that says ics transitions and apply. Submit changes to the kitchen and wait until its cooked. Irll give you a flasha le zip if there were no.errors. Nandroid backup and flash. Walla!!!! Ics transitions. Ive done this before and seriously takes a max of an hour dependong on how many requests the kotchen is taking. Ive learbed to be resourceful and figure things out on my own. Also it doesnt hurt to check out the Android apps section in General. There are some good guides there for building base roms, theming and kitchen, building ziPS, extracting stuff. All those mods you guys ask the devs to incorporate are there and most are noob friendly.

I had trouble with the earlier update scripts on Sleeper. It seems 2.04 has gotten all the bugs out. You can't beat CleanGB for convering to MTD and Toad seems to be on top of his game. I have not tried them on BML but I am sure they are comparable. The advantage that Sleeper offers is 2 versions, slim and full. Both seem very fast at stock frequencies. Since I restore advanced data from nandroid my setups always look the same and can compare performance. Sorry if this wasn't much help.

It's not for everyone. It is non-Touchwiz. That is probably the most important thing to remember so things will be different. I made a thread in General on both CM7 and CM9 where people can post tips and tricks to ease the experience of jumping over. I ran CM7 for awhile up to nightly 28. It is solid. CM9 as stated is in Alpha 3 now. It is pretty good for a taste of ICS but not for everyone.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
I think the OP is looking for a production build, so a nightly build version would not be ideal. CleanGB would be my recommendation. Just less overhead and room for errors.
side by side comp
Interesting thing, obvious too for most...
Each of the Devs use each other stuff(s) and they give credit for the mods each have used in the final rom...
As a side by side, I can see pros and cons of the two, I have used both and seem to lean towards Sleeper...not sure exactly why. but I have nandrroids of both ready to go.
Just cant seem to want to try the CM builds, would love to see what the Viper Devs could come up with in EL30 though.

Each phone hardware, app setup and battery longevity is different. Try them all out and see which fits your needs best.
You received that reply from Uber because this has been asked time and time again and it's the same answer. All it took was some time on your part to read through the general and q&a forums to find these threads a few pages back.

How is the battery power? On a scale of 1-10 and why do you give it the rating you do?

Well just installed it taday. But there was a leak of it and battery was good. I would get about 13 hrs and about 3 1/2 hrs screen time. Im a really heavy user. From 1-10 I give it a 10. I think everybody running this will agree with me.

Thanks! I might check it out! Do you have a link to the thread for it? I am somewhat new here, and even when I search for a ROM, I have trouble finding the thread :/ I'm not sure why.

Just to warn you, I got horrid 3g speeds with fk23...But I think it could be an area thing...
fi27 and f127 modem with agat fi27 v0.6.8 with the rom call lightweight 0.5 its great I get around 9 hrs heavy uses sometimes when I im bored I switch to a backup of jb fk09 tweaked signed I get about 8 hrs heavy uses
Awesome, thanks for the reply! Just wondering, can you define 'heavy'? I personally use my phone at school all the time, I listen to music through headphones about 1/2 of my total day(4 hours or so) and I will also spend a lot of time texting, browsing the web, and using apps that use data. I'm honestly constantly on my phone, and will have to charge it around 3 times per day.

Right now I'm on miui trying it out for the first time getting used to no app drawer. Favorite ROM for a daily (if I had one lols) would have to be Living Rejects. I flash it at least twice a week. Its pretty much my goto when I need a good solid dependable ROM for GPS and coverage while traveling. The battery life is effin amazing and music come out really loud and clear. But I will say once our beloved devs get cm10/AOKP/PA etc running solid for jb I will prolly be going back to PA or try out KK again. I love the UK customization options. I ran ICS aokp as a daily until jb started seeping its way into my veins now I'm flashing like there's no tomorrow can't wait for volume bug fix ^^

I run PA 2.54. I love being able to chg dpi per app easily and I am a CM fan. CM10 (which PA is built on) is fast and I get good battery.

I remember trying PA, and I was getting absolutely terrible battery life. Is there something I may have done wrong?

I'm running blazer 4.1 gingerbread I like ics and jb but I always come back to blazer 4.1 gingerbread because to me it is the most stable, faster, and battery life is much much better.

I still use the calkulin v3.0 custom gingerbread rom because it has been the most stable, fastest, and longest lasting, battery life-wise. I recently tried the one-click fk23 jellybean but ran into some problems so I flashed back to calkulin...Gonna try the fk23 again tomorrow though. ;p
