Okay my phone was refreshed and I had to reinstall all my apps. I can't see google talk in the app marketplace. I also can't find it on appbrain.
I searched around for a while to try to figure out what was going on, but can't find much other information about it.
I doubt the app was pulled or i would have probably heard of it.
Can i get a QR code or link to the appstore or an APK or appbrain?
I wish I knew as well. I ended up reflashing my rom to get it back...
OP.... what you need to do is download a rom and extract it.
go into the folder " sytem" then "apps"
get the talk.apk our and either adb install it or put it on your SD card and use root explorer to move it to the system/apps folder on your phone.
Hope this helps
hmmm why would I need to do this? was it pulled from the android marketplace for some reason? i'm just curious, i'm pretty sure I had to load it on my phone before from the marketplace.
i probably will just end up using another messaging client, because I don't really want to go through all that for an app I don't use very much.
in any case thanks for the advice, i'm glad to hear i'm not the only one who can't find it..
It has been included in every ROM I've installed. Maybe find it in the gapps pack for Cyanogen?
I'm not even rooted... i'm not using a custom rom.. i'm just using the stock sprint issued evo.
I was having issues with the phone and they restored it to factory defaults which made me lose my apps. The last time i rooted was the intial unrevoked (which later was lost with an OTA update)
No idea what to tell you then. Talk is part of the Google apps that are included with the phone. Most every ROM I have installed includes it. Cyanogen doesn't include a lot of these because they aren't allowed to be distributed by third parties and their team is good about sticking within the rules.
If something screwed up you should just factory reset the phone if you only want stock. Better yet, do a proper root and install whatever app you want
http://cyanogenmod-mirror.local.host.name/gapps/gapps-hdpi-20101025-signed.zip. Must be rooted to flash obviously. Do not know if this zip will work with Sense ROMs. It contains all Google apps (Market, Talk, Google Voice, etc.) Good luck. Not guaranteed that this will work. Use at own risk. Do a backup first.

ah i see my problem, i am an idiot. google talk IS preinstalled on the phone. i kept thinking i had to install it, couldnt find it in the market and gave up. i didn't even think to look in the app list on the phone....
that said, yea its about time that i did a proper root. ill have to read up a bit to be sure its easy enough- i have all the OTA updates, and htne ill go for it.
thanks for the replies!
So I just picked up a nook simple touch and am eager to root it, I've done plenty with Android on phones, never an ebook though. I've been reading the material here and had a couple questions.
1.) It looks like 1.1 firmware is needed for most of the roots here, however B&N only lists 1.2 currently. Does anyone have a mirror to 1.1 or tell me how to get that, currently I'm on 1.0.1
2.) If I can't get 1.1 are there any roots that will work for 1.2? I've been following the thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1346748 and it looks like it only works from 1.1 by the sound of it.
3.) Is everyone or anyone using the NoRefreshToggle? If so what do you think? Is it worth trying it out? Dangers of using it? When you toggle it off do you get greyscale back? From the sounds of the post, it's pure black and white with it on which is fine if when I disable it, it goes back to normal greyscale images.
4.) Did anyone find out how to turn off page animations in the kindle app? not a big deal, just wondering.
Thanks a lot, look forward to trying this out.
Here's a copy of nook_1_1_update.zip I pulled down from B&N a few weeks ago: http://www.mediafire.com/?h5kn1214gfjhkcg In the end I didn't need it, so I can't confirm how the upgrade works (the instructions said just put the file within the zip on an SD card and reboot)

Thanks for the link
Thanks for the 1.1 post link, however I updated to 1.1.2 and followed the instructions and everything seems to be ok, I can get email, install from the market place, only thing I can't do is search the market. A search just lists a blank page and doesn't find any apps, any ideas.
As for the Kindle question, after installing kindle app and seeing the performance, this isn't a big deal at all.
Still curious on the refresh toggle however, any ideas on that, have you guys tried it out? I may post there if I don't hear back.
Thanks

I have checked and as you said market search functionality is absent, it seems to be broken since the Googleplay thing.
As a way to regain it, in the mean time we get an updated market working, install Searchmarket.
The NorefreshToggle is still in early stages, but works quite well for webpages, etc.
Try it, there are no risks on it, on any program when you enable the app it will work, and when you go into a menu it will return to normal grayscale.

How do I install Searchmarket if I can't search the market for it lol ... Do I have to install it on my phone first, then transfer the apk over to the NST, then file browse and install it from /system/app ?
I tried NoRefreshToggle, it's interesting, like you said a work in progress ... Tried it with GReader unfortunatly it shuts off between Feed view and Article view which is a pain, but I think that's probably to avoid ghosting.
As for web page viewing, Opera Mini FCs on me everytime I open it, as does the stock browser, so I haven't been able to try browsing as of yet Still looking for a solution to that one.
Thanks for all the info, really enjoying the NST if NoRefreshToggle keeps getting better this could really be a killer device

I just use the Google Play website to initiate installs to the nook (it appears in my device list as "phone")
The included Opera Mini installation never worked for me (no FC nothing). In the end I fixed it by uninstalling and reinstalling.

Didn't even know you could send apps like that to your devices, never had a need to try it before. Worked like a charm ... Opera is working now as well, thanks for the tips Really enjoying Android on the NST
So are you saying you are on 1.1.2 rooted and enjoying it?
Should I downgrade to 1.1.1 and root or just go ahead with 1.1.2?
I can't wait to try this out.

I can't speak to the upgrade patch from 1.1.1, I bought my NST yesterday, it had 1.0.1 on it, I upgraded to 1.1.2 then followed the rooting instructions for 1.1.0 or was it 1.1.1 can't remember, in any case, after rooting everything seems to be working just fine

It was 1.1.0, there was no 1.1.1
Is there any risk upgrading to 1.1.2 from 1.1.0? Would I have to reinstall google apps &c? Did anything change in between 1.1.0 and 1.1.2? (I have heard that they may have fixed the WiFi issues that were plaguing me a few months ago.)
ive searched the forums...ive searched google and even manual for the HTC One V and i cannot for the life of me find a thing on how to (or where to) install themes ive downloaded and installed onto the device??
help would be appreciated, i just cannot figure this out and im sure its prob easy too? :silly:
What themes?
There is nothing called 'themes'! Is there? If you're not using any launcher, then in HTC Sense 4.0, we have to go to the HTC Hub and download themes/skins (as far as I know). And if you're using a launcher such as Apex, you'll have to go to the Play Store and download themes and they automatically get installed! Then where's the point of 'where to install themes?'
If you've downloaded the APK Theme Files of some launcher, then you just need to copy them to the SD Card and run and install them. Then it will be displayed in the corresponding launcher. :^)
It'll be better if you specify the extension of the theme files you've downloaded and the launcher you're using.

Well, you cant install any 3rd party themes in the stock rom. For that, you need to be running on custom roms (like CM9 based roms), even then, the themes have to be resolution specific.
The only way to customize the appearance of your OS is via Settings --> Personalize. There are a bunch of themes available ( not very beautiful though.)
okay...now im really confused??
some say use a file explorer, soforth but you are stating it cannot be done??
so, i cannot install my themes at all??

pls be generous enough to share from where u got themes (dont say they are live wallpapers)
to get into sdcard use xplore file manager by lcg or the es file explorer .....!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just to clear the confusion here,
If you are not rooted and are using the stock HTC Sense ROM without any 3rd party launchers then the only themes that you can use are the ones in the HTC hub.
If you do not wish to root but wanna install themes, i suggest you install Go Launcher, Apex or any other 3rd party launcher that is available in the play store, themes for these will also be available there.:good:
i think it was the play store i DLd to my PC then installed onto SDcard on device.
as it stands, it is using HTC stuff....i have no idea how to get a "launcher", i dont know a thing of "rooting"

follow this link,
(https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gau.go.launcherex&hl=en) on your pc
click the button "install"
once you click it, it will ask you for a gmail account
use the same gmail account that you have used on your one v (assuming that you are connected to 2g/3g or WIFI from your phone)
once it accepts the credentials.
the download will start on your PHONE, there is no way to dl an app to your pc via play store.
you dont have to worry about installing it, once it is dl'd it will auto install
try to learn how this launcher works, use it for a few days, if you are not satisfied then you can give other launchers a go using play store app from your phone or using your browser to go to https://play.google.com/store
Enjoy:good:
I've wanted to test out remix OS for a while. However I use xposed and su regular. It's all about customization for me. However once I installed remix I found it wasn't rooted. I searched around for a solution but people kept saying it was rooted? So after I broke my n9 trying to flash standard root, a quick Google revealed that for pc versions it involves Linux commands to mount and edit the system files. So I'm far to lazy for that. But I thought ill make this little guide on how to get root and xposed working systemlessly on your remixed N9
Although this is mainly for N9 there should be no reason why you can't follow this guide for your pad. HAVING SAID THAT: "Although this may have worked for me or others I am not responsible for the death, destruction, boot loop or spontaneous combustion (or anything else) of your device. Follow this at your own risk"
Things your going to need! (For root)
Remix Os Installed
Twrp Installed (newest)
systemless Root zip
I'm not going to explain how to install remix OS as that's easy enough and it's available on their website here same with TWRP Guide to install that is here
Grab Systemless root.
boot into recovery
Flashy flash flash
Wipe for good luck
reboot system!
TA-DAA (hopefully)
That's that bit done :silly: Now if that's all you want then awesome! Maybe give me a thanks :good:
But before we continue if your like me and not a fan of that standard Launcher 3. Now we have root let's get rid of it.
Run over to Google play and install a Terminal Emulator. I use Minimal terminal, cos it's pretty
Once Installed, Run over and Grab the launcher of your choice.
Once Installed click open. Then may say something about not supporting it.
Now stick your black hoodie on, Talk to an imaginary friend  and jump on your terminal and type the following commands
Code:
Su
pm disable com.android.launcher3
click the home button and nova launcher (in my case) should be sitting there ready for you.
But I like my Icons! I WANT MORE CUSTOMISATION, at the moment I have a way of doing it. ONLY ITS VERY TEDIOUS.
Things your going to need
icon pack of your choice
root browser of your choice
apk editor
Go into your icon pack folder should be I'm data/app/com.iconpack/
open the apk, dive into the apk and find the icons. it's normally in the .apk/res/drawable-nodpi-v4
extract all or just the icons you want
once you've done so jump into apk editor and go through to the app you want to edit in apk editor app
search for the icons. normally in the res/drawable-xxhdpi-v4 or similar folder there might be a few icons to change in the separate drawable-hdpi folders.
click the edit button to the right of the icon, add your icon.
click the save at the bottom
uninstall the app and reinstall through the apk editor.
job done
I'm fully aware this is a lot of faf. But it's only way I can do it at the moment.
Regardless let us move forward!
Things your going to need! (Xposed)
Magisk Manager
Material Xposed apk
Download Material Xposed apk First (link above). And install first!
Download the Magisk manager from this forum here and follow the simple instructions to install
Install Xposed in Magisk Manager's Download section the 23SDK Is the one you want to download.
it should install the zip and want to reboot your device.
you should be done now. You should have a rooted and xposed Remix OS
I hope I helped someone, I couldn't find anything like this that helped me. I just saw alot of unanswered questions. So far I'm liking remix os alot. It's smooth and quick. Once I grab a Bluetooth keyboard I imagine it be even better. Whether or not it be a replacement for a laptop I don't know. However if all your really do on a laptop is write documents, play small games and browse Internet. Then it's pretty much perfect. I found that (although a little sketchy) I managed to do web development on this. So it's a very versatile OS.
If I helped give us a thanks. If I'm an idiot and this is somewhere else, then start throwing things.
:good::silly:
Help! I've soft bricked my Device
Don't panic! Relax. Grab a tea or whatever you drink. And just go back to the remix os how to flash link and do that. It should sort it out for you.
Is it possible to use the Shield TV without a Google Account?
Does somebody know a way?
Maybe with a custom firmware?
I want to know that too. I had a foster device but I find not an clearly answer yet. do you?
EDIT:
Perhaps this could help us.
EDIT2:
surprisingly I found a key-kombo to get an special menu. You just need to put ↑ ↑ ← ← on the remote. Then you can choose to skip-login. Now we need to know more.
dunno y u wouldnt want goog signed in.. i suppose if u get thrugh setup then can ust adb sideload stuff
Instead of sideloading stuff you can use Aurora store to get all the updates you need and more.
Just once you need to sideload the store: AuroraStore_3.1.5.apk

So it is possible to use the device without a google account then?
I even went a step further and rooted my stock OS shield and deleted all the bloatware that came with it. Then installed only jellyfin (alternative to plex) to stream from my home NAS + put the device on its own VLAN without internet access.
Even this process requires a google account to setup.. WOuld be nice if I could just remove that google requirement if Im not even planning to use it on the internet

Without google means in this case that you never connect your device with google.

Sorry, forget to mention that you need the shield dev rom.
Perhaps with non-dev and magisk root it could be possible to Flash an apk from the dev Rom but atm it is just possible to skip the Google login with the official nvidia dev-rom.
Greetings by Idijt
I find it if you first set it up with account you just go in and delete the account and turn off auto login.
I have both versions dev and retail both work the same as for deleting the account and turning off the auto login.
Make sure you turn developer tool on though
I dont know about newer firmware versions, but i remember going through the initial setup and skipping everything that gave that option until the create google account screen, where i couldn't go any further, i simply pulled the power plug, put it back in , and i was able to skip the google account creation.
Obviously i dont recommend folks pulling the power cord while system is runing on a regularly basis, didn't seem to be any ill affects, but i would suggest that you have nothing hooked up to the shield like harddrives and such just incase.
I cant remember for sure, but i think there is a way to force a reboot through a connected keyboard and key combination (search engine) while system is running which is a more elegant solution if possible

Yes, this is an option but you need to create an Google account. Yes, you can delete this after the setup but you probably keep it. I dont want to create an account and I dont want to share my informations with google. This should be the last possible fix for this.

This does not work. I tried a lot to skip the google-login with non-dev rom without success.
Option A:

Option B:
just type in a fake or real google login and login. Then disable the account.

Yes it can only be skipped on dev firmware. twhen I guess I would say that the "SetupWraithPrebuild.apk" checked the some system files, perhaps the build.prop and if you not running the a dev-rom you can not skip-google login with the key-kombo.
But some good news are that Steel01 released an experimental LOS16 (pie) rom.

thanks for the participation, i thought i was really the only one who didn't wanna login with a gmail account since it took some months for your replies.
i created a new throaway gmail account in the meantime, but it was not easy because google requires a sms verification in my country. i had to use one of these sms websites for that.
nearly all televisions and branded boxes with the android tv os let you skip the google account login during the initial setup.
since nvidia does support this product quite well with constant software updates, they'll probably consider to implement this feature in an upcoming firmware update if we are vocal enough on their official forums and request the 'skip login' frequently?
@uigger @I_did_it_just_tmrrow
How did you guys create throw-away google accounts.. I could never get any of those SMS verification services to work.. I think I tried like 20 different numbers there. All are used already..
I would also love to try lineageOS on the shield but project seems to not update at all since many months and also dev is not answering in forum anymore.
You think it still works good on 2019 shield Pro ? Is it safe to try it and easily revert to default if not.. ?
