[Q] Cannot boot into recovery, how to fix? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Recently I've been unable to boot into recovery, it just displays the splash screen and goes right back to fastboot.
I have tried flashing new/alternate recoveries through Rom Manager but no difference.
I have ADB access. What should be my next step to fix this? Unfortunately without recovery I can't nandroid backup/recovery or I would give that a go.

It displays the white Sprint screen or the Evo 4G screen?

It shows the Evo splash screen for just a second then goes right back to fastboot.

Try downloading ROM manager from the play store and open the app, towards the bottom there should be an option to flash a custom recovery, you might have to flash a cwm recovery first..

Have you tried flashing a recovery via PC36IMG.zip through hboot? Or only via Rom Manager? Sometimes Rom Manager fails to properly flash the recovery.img, one of the bazillion reasons not to use it.
If you haven't, try that first. The phone boots properly, right?
Edit: Here's a PC36IMG.zip of Amon Ra 3.11. It's already named correctly, just download, put on the root of your SD card, boot into hboot, say yes to flash, no to reboot. Then try entering recovery and see if it works. Also, nandroid restoring won't help your recovery. If your phone also won't boot then it might help that problem. Download here.

Thanks! I downloaded the PC36IMG of Amon Ra and it worked great, I guess it was a problem with Rom Manager!

True that ROM manager sucks but it did flash Amon for me with no problems... but just follow plain James advice

It's pretty much became a rule that if I flash any recovery in rom manager, I do it at least twice.

Oh Boy...Huge Error...Help Requested

Okay. I've search around and haven't found anything yet.
I recently got a new evo and rooted with the Unrevoked 3.0 beta RC2 yesterday. All was going well until I tried to upgrade to the CM 6.1.2 this morning. Google apps wasn't installed so I flashed the zip which put me in to a boot loop with Clockwork.
It was giving me an error when I tried to restore the backup. I tried to flash pc36img.zip and now whenever I go into recovery I am in RA-evo-v1.8 which I am unfamiliar with. I've tried installing other ROMs via this recovery but the prcess is aborted each time.
Any help would be more than appreciated. I am literally stuck.

Need any and all information about your phone. I also notice that you are new. The dev section isnt for Q/A there is an entire section dedicated to solving these issues. Please remember that next time. Keeps things cleaner. So please gather anything you can about your phone. Method, Hboot, Version, Radio, Anything that can help anyone here identify something.
Do you have the rom in the root of the usb card? If so try full data wipe and installing the room see if it boots up.
Thanks for the quick reply. Will remember. Desperation has gotten the better of me. I will move over to Q/A if you prefer.

I agree with this method... the best way to determine the recovery to use would be to go into the terminal and type
Code:
cat /proc/mtd
if you see "400000" then you need to get the clockwork v3.0.0.2 that supports this phone partion layout. If you see "20000" then you should get amon_ra 1,8 from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=705026
The information I gathered was from this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=894331
Making sure you have the correct recovery is the first step. Once that is done create a nandroid and save it somewhere to ensure that the wimax partition is saved.
You have to flash the modified version of Amon_ra found in Zikronix thread. You can find my thread that points to it or just search for hboot 2.10 and follow the instructions in that rooting thread. It seems you're already rooted so just flashing the recovery is probably all you will need.
I haven't used unrevoked, and I know there are several versions. But I have seen others who have used unrevoked and couldn't flash anything bc evidently the method they used to root didn't install the flash_image file on their phone.
I know that installing flash_image fixed being able to flash for some people who rooted with unrevoked.
This issue came up and I was able to help some people, if you check near the end of fastRX8 thread. But I was only able help point the right direction, they figured out the rest of the way. The OP there has the flash_image file and tells you what terminal commands to install it.
I don't know how for you to check if you gave it or not, as I can see mine on sd card cuz I put it there when I rooted.
Beyond this suggestion, lithid can probably help much better than I.
But def post your hardware version, root method, and hboot version (you see that when you go into bootloader and read the top line.

you should flash the pc36img.zip located at the bottom of zikronix's root thread. good luck. just put it on the root of ur sdcard named as pc36img.zip and boot into bootloader. accept the update, and say no to the reboot. then pick recovery, and flash a rom. you need to stay with this recovery if it works for you.

FIX BROKEN RECOVERY
This is really only needed if you rooted with one of the previos guides version 6 or lower or if you installed a different recovery like I told you not to.
1) Download File PC36IMG_Recovery.zip and Rename to PC36IMG.zip.
copy to the root of your SDCard and power off phone
2) Power your phone back on into the boot loader by holding power and vol-down until your presented with a white screen. It will read the pc36img.zip and as you if you want to flash. Say yes. Then it will ask if you want to reboot, VOL+UP for yes.
3) If your rom gets tossed in the process. Reboot your phone into bootloader select recovery, and reflash your rom....DONE

OP flash the PC36IMG in the bootloader to load this new recovery, then you can go into your new recovery and flash a new rom.
i just rooted my evo with the unrevoked beta.hboot 2.02 it installed clockwork and through that i switchted to the aman ra after that i did a nand backup, powered off my phone and when i turned it back on it was stuck in the bootloader loop. the only thing that eventually worked was installing the sprintlovers pc36img. that got my phone working again. just tried to nand backup again and the same thing happened. does this mean that i need to flash that broken recovery?

Were you restoring a backup or did you stuck on loop on a new rom flash?
i wasnt even trying to flash a rom yet. i was doing the very first nand backup so i could check some roms out. after the backup was complete it gave the option to power off so i did and when i turned my phone back on it was in the bootloader loop. so i went back to recovery, wiped everything, restored nand and i said it restored but when i rebooted it was back in the bootloader loop.so i just search around trying to get help but couldnt find much so i put sprintlovers since it boots up right when you turn your phone on. now it wouldnt even nand backup it said some error and was in the bootloader loop again so i just reinstalled sprintlovers, again
Try downloading an actual rom in zip format (not sprintlovers pc36img) and see if you can flash a new rom fresh. Make sure to wipe everything.
Try using Caulkings format all zip in recovery to wipe your caches.

htc evo thinks its an htc incredible

so my buddy has an evo, he was playing around with flashing, and somehow he thought it would be a good idea to flash the Incredible rom: IncDoes MIUI rom to his evo. obviously this caused problems. the rom surprisingly works somewhat well though. but lots of stuff is missing and everything force closes. so i tried to boot into recovery, but to no avail. i can get to the hboot screen just fine though. so im assuming he somehow got rid of his recovery? any ideas? and when i went into the rom manager app, i was going to try to flash clockwork that way, but it recognizes his phone as an incredible. so i guess im wondering if i need to flash the recovery again? thanks guys
just flash the recovery manually or using a pc36img.zip. should work just fine.
how would i go about doing this with out having a recovery? ive only flashed from either clockwork or the rom manager app.
ok, first, you cant flash a recovery while inside a recovery. so download a pc36img.zip from amon-ra's thread, put it on the root of your sdcard named pc36img.zip exactly, and boot into bootloader. it should scan the sdcard. hit vol up to accept the 'update', and then you are good.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=705026
You can download amon_ra recovery there, then rename the zip to PC36IMG and place on the root of sd card, boot into bootloader, and select update.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=705026
here is the link to the recovery thread if you need it. as stated earlier, download the PC36IMG.zip file and follow the bootloader instructions
Edit: someone else beat me to it
and..... SUCCESS!!! thanks guys! big mahalos!
Anytime man. I can give you the clockworkmod 3.0.5 if you wanted that one instead.

SOFT BRICK please help

Hey, I got a soft brick so I'm going to use the unroot method here but I just wanted to make sure it would work.
S-OFF, Hboot 2.1
Also, I'll still be able to root and go back to an old nandroid if this all works out, correct?
It should work. Yes, you will be able to re-root and restore a nandroid once you have completed everything again.
Might throw out your issue first, to see if someone can help you fix without having to go through all that work of unrooting and re-rooting again.
Let's hope so. I'm knocking on wood that I won't have to throw my EVO down some stairs and go get a new one.
Firstly, it is unclear (at least to me) what you mean by "soft brick". Secondly, the link you posted is to a thread that is outdated and was retired by the OP. Or did you mean this thread?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=838448
To answer your second question, with S-off you can just go into recovery, do a wipe and then restore your NAND back-up from there. Try just wiping the cache and dalvik cache before restoring. If your phone still gives you problems, you may need to do a full wipe and do a fresh install of your favorite rom.
Ok things are more complicated than I had originally implied.
I can't boot into recovery--still SOFF but when I try to get into recovery I'm getting the red triangle.
Should I try the fix broken recovery option?

Now we're getting somewhere. Yes, if you can get the recovery to work, it will make the process less difficult for you. Can you boot normally? If so, use ROM Manager to flash the recovery on it. If it doesn't boot into clockwork, try using ROM Manager to flash an alternate recovery (Amon RA) and then try booting into recovery.
If your phone doesn't boot at all, you're going to have to push the recovery image onto the phone via fastboot adb. Worse case scenario would be to run the RUU and start over.

Yeah, no dice on getting it to boot. Stick on the HTC EVO 4G white screen and goes nowhere. I got into this mess trying to apply the GPS fix for CM7 and when i tried to nandroid back I got loopy loops.
So should I just use the recovery fix listed there or can I just download CM 3.0.0.5 and push that via fastboot? All my nandroids are via CM.

I would download Amon recovery and flash that via adb; I recommend staying away from clockwork - read about too many users running into issues with it, especially that 3.0.0.5 version.

I would suggest using Amon Ra recovery. I like it better, and personally have had far less issues with it. Attatched is a PC36IMG of Amon Ra 2.3. Put it on the main directory of your SD card, name it exactly PC36IMG, and boot to bootloader, and select yes to update. That should flash Amon Ra's V2.3 recovery for you. If it's successful, see if it works. The only problem with this, that I see, is you wouldn't be able to restore your previous clockwork backups. However, if that did go successful, and you were able to boot into a rom, you could use ROM manager to flash clockwork back, then you could restore your backups. Hope you get it booted up.
EDIT: If you do end up needing to unroot, just remember that if you initially used unrevoked to root, or used unrevoked forever at any time, you're not going to be able to turn S on without having a custom recovery. Becase as far as I know, you need to flash the Unrevoked S on tool in recovery if you used unrevoked to begin with. Otherwise S is permanently off.

Yea, try the recovery fix. If unsuccessful getting CW to flash, remember you can always try to flash Amor RA recovery just to be able to wipe and flash a working rom. Once you get the phone to boot, you can download ROM manager, flash clockwork and then restore to your CW NAND that is stored on your SD card. I've had to do this in the past.

Well thanks anyway.
Looks like booting back into CWM is no longer an option for me--everything defaults to Amon_RA (even when trying to switch through ROM manager). Guess I can't load my old nandroids so I'm stuck rebuilding.
Oh well...worse things could have happened.

So choosing 'flash clockworkmod recovery' from rom manager doesnt work for you? weird. Try letting it flash, and then instead of rebooting to recovery from within rom manager, boot to recovery manually, from teh bootloader. see if that works.

Seemed to be an issue with ROM Manager. So weird--I'm so used to everyone over in Heroland swearing by CWM. I'm glad I'm back to a spot where RA is king.
Anyway I uninstalled ROM manager and am just not going to screw with it anymore. GB has a "reboot to recovery" option for a reason.

[Q] Can I flash Clockwork Mod recovery from hboot?

I'll run through a history:
- Rooted my phone to S-OFF and installed a custom ROM
- Installed another custom ROM after running a 'super wipe' script
- Decided I wanted to go back, tried to get to clockworkmod recovery but I couldn't get to hboot
- Tried to re-root, got halfway and it failed. I could now get to hboot but when I get to clockworkmod recovery it shows an error logo with a danger triangle sign. When I try to boot it just stays on the HTC logo.
- The first time I tried to load Clockworkmod it said it couldn't access some /cache/ directory and now it just shows the warning icon with no error message.
I think I need to reinstall Clockworkmod, then use that to reinstall a ROM. I heard it's possible to do this by flashing a zip file from the SDcard and loading hboot. How can I do this?
Thanks!

That red triangle is HTC's recovery mode. You should manage to get root via one click root and then flash clockwork normally. In the app.
Thanks. What exactly is one click root? Have googled it but not sure which it is.
I think you might mean this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=857537
But that seems to require that I can boot into a ROM in the first place? I can't get past the HTC logo at all.

No that is S-OFF. You need S-OFF if you want to flash custom rom. This is what I meant http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
Thanks again. Just to clarify, on hboot it tells me it's 'S-OFF' at the top of the screen. I should run the one click utility anyway, right?
I don't think superone click works on dhd but I could be wrong. Haven't read up on it in a long time.
But back to original question on hand. I made a guide in the general section for this exact issue. It titled stuck in hboot. Their I have a link for cwr in a pd98 format(flashable through hboot).
It should work for you. I did notice that the modelid in the txt is different but was told it should work for dhd with no modification but I have not confirmed as I have an inspire. If it doesn't work let me know and ill make the change quickly and uplaod a new one. Its a simple change. If you want to can try. Simply change the model I'd to pd98100000 from pd9812000
Thank you, I will try that now.
...And it worked! Thanks all

I have a similar problem. I tried to flash a galaxy rom on to my htc evo 4g and now my phone wont boot up. I actually need instructions on how to do this. When I try to flash recovery it goes into HBOOT and also goes into bootloader. But when I try recovery it goes to the white HTC Evo 4g screen and immediately goes back to Hboot. Iv tried to download a clockworkmod custom recovery img and flash it as a PC36IMG zip. It finds the zip and says parsing PC36IMG but doesn't ask if I want to flash it and goes back into bootloader. I renamed the recovery image "Recovery" and the Zip "PC36IMG" as instructed from a different website. I can ONLY use this method because my micro port is broken.
Also when I downloaded the recovery image there were two choices. Recovery image and recovery touch image. We should I go with?

2) Buy a new one
3) Come back to xda
4) Read all the tutorials once again
5) Read them again
6) Re-read them
7) Now do whatever you want.

Sorry but what are you talking about an EVO 4g in the DHD forums??...BTW, in the zip file you need a .txt file to be able to be flashed. If that file is missing then the hboot will never detect the .zip file.
Besides, if you have an unlocked bootloader you won't be able to flash recovery in that way. You can do it using fastboot flash commands...

Cant Change Rom

Hello, Im kind of new to both this phone and custom roms, and it seems like ive gotten myself in some trouble.
I installed the ICS alpha rom to play around with, and now i cant seem to install any other rom. I had trouble flashing the clockwork recovery, so i used the alternate recovery listed at the bottom of the Rom manager program. That one worked, and i installed the ICS rom with no problem.
Now i want to install a different rom, but i for some reason cant. no matter what rom i try it gives errors at the verification point during installation and automatically aborts. Is there any way to fix this?
Thanks,
Plethysmograph
Well I know CWM has an option when you install a .zip there's an option to turn off/on signature verification. But alternate recovery I dunno

the alternate recovery i have is RA_GNM Recovery 3.02, if that helps. I tried to flash clockwork recovery and i didnt get any problems but when i went to boot in to recovery it just booted in to the other one

Did you then go back into Rom Manager and select "Flash Alternate Recovery" to switch over to CWM?
Also, what version of CWM did you download? Where did you get this file from?
Here is a verified site for Inc recoveries: http://pvillecomp.com/?page_id=28
Im confused, the alternate recovery option is the RA_GNM Recovery. I downloaded the latest version of it from the clockwork mod website (5.0.2.0)
would the problem im having be due to a different PB31IMG?

Im confused, the alternate recovery option is the RA_GNM Recovery. I downloaded the latest version of it from the clockwork mod website (5.0.2.0)

Ok, that is the proper file. Once you selected the option, your alternate recovery became your primary recovery and vice versa. Amon Ra is now and still your main recovery whereas CWM is your "alternate recovery." Selecting the "flash alternate recovery" option again (if it allows that is) should switch it back over to CWM.
Even after doing all that it still goes to the other recovery. Or maybe im just doing something wrong, which is most likely the case.

Ohhhh, I see the problem. Select "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" in Rom Manager to go from Amon Ra to CWM. To test, I began with CWM 3.0.0.8:
1) installed Rom Manager and upgraded to 5.0.2.0
2) selected "Flash Alternate Recovery" and Amon Ra was installed. I then booted into recovery to verify it was there.
3) reboot phone and go back into Rom Manager and select "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" and let it update.
4) go into recovery if you want to visual verification. Tada CWM 5.0.2.0 is installed for me.
How's this work?
I tried those steps and it seems like the other recovery is still on there. I must be doing something incorrect because your steps make sense, but for some reason my phone is just being incredibly stubborn
Also when i go and try to flash the stock PB31IMG file it says the current one is newer and doesnt go through with it. I know i had to use a different one in order to put ICS on, and for some reason i think it may have to do with some of the problems im having.

Hmm, aight how about this...
Go into rom manager and press Menu, then select "Erase Recovery" then try the first "Flash Clockwork Recovery" option again.
Otherwise, download CWM 5.0.2.0 from the link I posted above. Place that file onto the root of your sd card and delete the other CWM file you previously downloaded. As you know, you need to install this PB31IMG.zip via hboot.
I really think we can and will get this recovery situation straightened out.
Edit: just read your second post. Hmm, I wasn't aware of any additional CWM instructions for that rom. I'll take a look at it now and see if anything stands out.
When trying to use the stock PB31IMG file, I get the error that says:
Main Version is older!
Update Fail!
Do you want to reboot device?
Ive tried both and still no dice. Its really odd, and i agree with you on the instructions for that ROM, i know i saw them somewhere but i cant for the life of me remember where.
Flash this thru hboot http://dinc.does-it.net/PB31IMG.zip. Put it on your sd in no folders. Do not rename it. This is an hboot flashable of cwm 5.0.2.0.
Amon RA is stricter than cwm when flashing files by default. If you want to continue to use Amon you will need to go in to it and go to the flash zip menu and select toggle signature verifications. Then try to flash a rom.
Well I did not notice anything in that thread aside from rom bugs and people not able to flash that ICS [alpha] in recovery. The first set of directions I found are here:

I have to ask because both recoveries will be the same blue color. Regardless of the setting you select, when you go into recovery the label still states Amon Ra? As in, even after you go into recovery and select "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" then reboot into recovery the label at the bottom is the same "Amon Ra"?
I appreciate the assistance cmlusco.
the file linked did work, but clockwork still doesn't show up. it still loads the amon recovery for some reason. this is so frustrsting haha. I mean if there's no way to get clockwork on there do you know of any roms that will install through the amon recovery?
I'm not sure about AmonRa compatibility, I always assumed everything worked for both recoveries. I never strayed from the recommendation to use CWM. I took the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" attitude. Have you tried the latter part of cmlusco's post in Amon Ra?

Verry strange. I have never heard of that happening. Well another sugestion would be to try to flash the stock recovery thru hboot and see if it will take. http://dinc.does-it.net/stockGBrecovery/PB31IMG.zip. If it does, reboot, and then try flashing cw again and see if it will take. If that dosent work i would try to flash an ruu and get back to stock.
I never saw an option to toggle the signature verifications, where is it? I tried the stock recovery, and it loaded up no problems but when i went in to recovery it was still the Amon Ra recovery.
