Hey..I'm new to the forum and the Evo. I've seen a few posts about this, but haven't really been able to find an answer.
As with the other people that typically notice this, I'm an iPhone 3GS user...I bought the Evo a few days ago and love it, for the most part. I'm used to extremely smooth performance with very little lag. I noticed that scrolling through the application drawer, or the built in messages application causes huge lag, along with other menus. It seems like the most choppy performance is as the scroll is slowing down (like, if you "flick" it). So, naturally, I rooted my phone. Oh and to be clear, I'm not talking about the touch-sensor lag.
Here is what I have done so far hoping that it would eliminate the lag:
- Obviously, I've used Advanced Task Killer and removed the Live Wallpaper. Didn't really do anything. I have about 160 MB of available memory.
- Using the stock OTA rom (rooted), I installed the netarchy-toastmod-3.7.3c kernel to remove the FPS cap on my screen. It worked. Now, my scrolling is more responsive, but still choppy.
- Froyo. I've tried a few different Froyo ROMs hoping that the claimed 250-300% speed increase would eliminate scroll glitches. It did not. I tried Ava and Cyanogen ROMs.
- I tried the netarchy-toastmod-3.7.3c Froyo kernel for the Froyo ROMs. Still...choppy...possibly a little better though. It's hard to tell without seeing it side by side.
My brother has a different Droid phone (I forget which), but it didn't have a noticeable lag like the Evo does, and I know it's specs aren't as good. Is this phone doomed to low-quality scrolling? Any other suggestions?
What you're probably noticing is a lack of refinement in the easing of the animation. The only "fix" will be to view it as more responsive.

You may want to try a different launcher. For super snappy response I have heard good things about Launcher Pro. Personally I am using CM6 RC1 with some ADW tweaks and I feel like its fluid enough for me with no choppiness.
Thanks! The ADW tweak posted made the application drawer seem a LOT better (mainly because of the horizontal scrolling). I suppose I'll either just deal with the other choppiness or take it back and wait for a different phone, like the Epic. Maybe I'm just being too picky >.<
I've had great success with CM6 nightly and LauncherPro. As smooth as you can get. I had a news widget that caused some slow downs as well so make sure a widget is not causing it.
I noticed this too.
Its almost like comparable to a computer game performance on a pc
when it goes from 60 frames per second to 20 frames per second you notice it more.
if they just made it stay at say 20fps speed then it would at least keep a reasonably smooth experience
I will try the CM nightly build see if I have any luck.
I love the evo too but man the iphone 4 seems so much smoother when in reality its probably not.
its all about the way its presented
i am currently using baked snack 1.1 with netarchy kernel
if i install cm do i have to flash a different kernel or will it automatically do it?
Hello everyone, I am currently running Sense 3.5 Energy and have been trying to find a good sense Rom the suits me. I just cannot seem to get one that doesn't have noticeable glitches.
With the Energy Sense 3.5 Rom I am having some trouble with a couple of things showing up.
*For example, when I try and select a "scene", "skin", "wallpaper", "Lock screen style" via the Personalize section, they are all just grey tabs and show no preview.
I find this Sense Rom to be the best one on my phone.
The other Sense Rom's do the same exact thing.
My other question is for the ICS Rom's. I love the overall feel of them and they are excellent but I am also having some noticeable issues.
*One issue I would like to address is when I turn the screen off from the on state, it will transition off, flicker on then off. It's basically a hit an miss, sometimes does it and sometimes doesn't, mostly it does. Same thing on ICS as to the Scene, skins, wallpapers, lock screen previews.
I have looked in many thread comments and haven't seen anyone really comment on any of these things, unless I am overlooking them. So here I am!
Appreciate all the help I can get, 2nd post! W00T!
Thanks, -Nic

The gray tab / hidden preview is a known issue with newer Sense ROMs. What to do is whenever you are in Personalize - Skins it whatever, hit the menu button and use Grid view.
The ICS screen-on thing, it happens sometimes. Not sure why, but it does. Plagues me on GB too. Annoying, yes, but I tap my power button 3 times fast to make sure it doesn't happen. Try using SetCPU or an alternative and raising barely the minimum value /screen off value.

For the ICS, I personally wouldn't recommend using setcpu, because it'll compete with the tiamat havs kernel and can cause issues. You can try downloading rom toolbox from the market [free] and use it to change the governor.
Most stable sense roms, in my opinion, are mikg or classic.

Problem with those, IMO, is they're TOO stock. I need some flashiness to my ROM

Alright I will rom the ICS in a couple of minutes because I would rather run them. Not exactly sure how to just raise a particular setting. I'll probably be able to figure it out though ha! Curious as to know which ICS you would run? Jared's or kushdeck's?
Appreciate the help

Both of those roms have very active themers who have done incredible jobs making them non stock. See wired theme for mikg or evolvedclassic and supreme cream for classic. Just sayin....
Here's a weird one....
Samsung Galaxy Nexus...unrooted,
I downloaded Beautiful Widgets and for the first time used there live wallpaper(open gl version),
Noticed today a lot of screen artifacts ie. Letters being dropped and unreadable,
I've factory reset the phone and all seems OK now,
What the hell happened ?
Cheers in advance
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
I think I might be having the same issue. It seems if my phone is running and I lock it for a while. Then unlock it after it's been sleep. All of my widgets are showing garbled pixels all over the screen. Then when I reboot the issue is gone. The next time it happens I'll take screen shot and see if you or anybody else is having the same issue as me.
Also using BW but reading this I'm scared to use their LWP, let us know how it goes, did BW cause any reboots? Fishing here because I'm not sure if BW is to blame or not.
Mine has rebooted a few times but I've found nothing to blame it on yet.
BTW no artifacts.

Hello mate...it was probably more of a coincidence than anything, I'd had bw on for 24hrs then this happened so very possibly a very big coincidence
I found after a factory reset it spot on again....
Maybe I'll try the bw lwp again and see how it goes.

Hey. This is kinda old but I am having similar issues.
I also have BW but Ive had it for about 3-4 days and just started experiencing this today. Only changes I have made today was auto-flashing franco-r116. This could just be a coincidence I suppose.
I managed to catch a screenshot. Its tough because it comes and goes rather quickly, mostly when im scrolling through stuff.
Really dont want to reflash
I just posted in a different thread with the same issue and I'm also running Franco nightly 116. I guess I need to revert back to M2.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA
Good to know. Ill reflash M2 aswell and report back here if problem persists!
If you are running R116 and you are getting artifacts then maybe your gpu can't handle the overclock, one version is 384mhz and the other is 512mhz. If 512 gives you artifacts use 384, if 384 gives you artifacts then you will have to use a milestone Franco kernel because that is stock gpu, 307mhz.
This was my first thread (screenshots included).
Since then it's been an intermittent problem on Apex and Nova Launchers. Not on launcher 7, however, and not on the new miui launcher, and (as far as I can remember) not in any app besides the launcher. The problem also seems to be exacerbated by having lots of widgets, though naturally it's hard to measure since it only happens intermittently.
aLogCat also comes up with "OpenGL is out of memory!" when these things occur. The problem seems to transcend kernels and GPU overclocking (my device seems to be bad at CPU overclock, and I've never tried it seriously).
I think that narrows it down to: launcher issue, widget issue, usage issue (maybe it's being strained too much at a particular time), or some combination.
My current best hypotheses (or suggested solutions, sort of):
1) http://stackoverflow.com/questions/9412662/how-can-fonts-cause-opengl-out-of-memory-error i.e. certain widgets have fonts too big. This fits with your usage of BeautifulWidgets and my large clocks. But it doesn't always cause an issue, or for everyone.
2) Large grid (in my case, 5x4). One of the common denominators for Apex and Nova, but not MIUI, is resizable grid. As such, I'm currently in the process of testing 4x4; it seems to be able to handle more strain, but since it's intermittent I'll have to try for longer time to be sure.
I'm runnin stock Nexus with Nova launcher, just noticed that there's a slight delay upon selecting a menu option.
Here's what i mean....
Say you're in the SETTINGS menu, when i select one of the sub menus e.g Sound/Display/Storage/Battery. When i click on it, it highlights it in blue while i press it, but when i let go it kind of fades out slowly, like theres a transition on it, meaning there is a slight delay in opening the menu. It's really annoying, because the phone is lightning quick, but then this happens, it's like the GPU can't cope with the transition/fade effect when you select the sub menu option.
I've turned all transition effects off in Nova Launcher to see if that's what was affecting it, but it's not. Is this meant to happen?
Thanks

yeah everybody has that. doesn't matter what rom/kernel you run.
google kinda ****ed up here.
I think its something that google can tweak in an update...hopefully.
Same
Same, I didn't notice this on a SGS2 video running ICS though...
Except this problem isn't just Nova Launcher its just the settings and menu in general
Seriously??? It takes 1/2 a second! Is that really toooooo slow?!!

In Settings -> Developer options, enable "force GPU rendering". It does increase graphics benchmarks by about 20%, and removes some of the UI sluggishness even with stock images. I'd also recommend you to use foxhound beta 0.1 of 4.0.4 android along with leankernel - no delays whatsoever
YEah this kinda bothers me too. Seems like Android can't really handle serveral 2D transitions at the same time...
I really hate the fact that the Android team at Google doesn't an eye for the small details, which are a big deal. This little transition in the settings meny gives away a huuge part of the experience. Some may say im overreacting, but hey just my thoughts..

I could not concur with this more. ICS is nice, but it is VERY unpolished. There are little annoying bugs/quirks everywhere and, while I know early adopters tend to pay the price for doing so, all these little issues are mostly unacceptable for a 4.0-level release on a flagship device.

You can definitely tell they're moving in this direction with the changes from 2.3 to 4.0 though. They're clearly trying to push towards a cleaner, thought-out experience across the device. Its just going to take some time for the old habits to die.
I truly think its just something google could fix in an update to the settings activities. Hopefully google doesnt ignore it though. The hardware is easily capable.

your first advice is completely pointless imho. That option is there to force third party apps that don't explicitly ask for 2d acceleration. All of the ics menus and all google apps already use gpu acceleration.
I think the problem is with the gpu. Menus and nav button transitions are MUCH smoother on my HP touchpad running cm9.
I agree with trying out 4.0.4 though. People say it's much improved in this regard. Paul's 4.0.4 is very popular.

Well, I've had my phone for a little over a week and I'm realizing lag when scrolling in the app drawer. its not extremely laggy, but its just not super smooth. When I also text really fast it also lags which is really hard to type. I turned of auto correction I think it fixed the problem, but I'm not 100%. Anyone of you experiencing this?
Oh forgot to mention do you guys hear static when you have the volume really high?
I don't have this issue but I am also using the force gpu rendering option. Everything is smooth and fast.

I dont have lag when typing in text. But many people have complained about stuttering in the app drawer.
But i use handcent since day 1 for texts...

Yeah, if i scroll really fast during the app drawer i notice lag, a little choppy lag, for most people many might not notice it. But I do, i think because i'm so used to my 120hz monitor when I used a 60hz monitor I notice just by moving around a window. I might be picky, but there is lag without a doubt in this phone or atleast my phone.

i already did it. i don't notice an improvement.
Different roms behave differently. Mine was pretty smooth but I've noticed lag on APW scrollable Widgets and flicking through the XDA on several roms. 4.0.3 helped but didn't fix.
Now I'm running Axi0m rom now which is 4.0.4 and there is no lag anymore. Much faster. I'm not over clocking or anything outside of the stock settings for that rom.
So I don't know if its 4.0.4 or the kernel/rom combination, but its a welcome addition. It uses Franco's kernel so maybe it was fixed there?
I DONT have Force 2D enabled either. FYI. Realistic answer.

Don't listen to people telling to "Force GPU rendering", they don't know what they're talking about (Launcher2 already uses GPU rendering).
The slight stuttering when scrolling the app drawer is a known bug, reportedly fixed in firmware > 4.0.2 and it also didn't seem to happen in 4.0.1.

^^^^ This.
Wth is with ppl saying to force gpu rendering, it only works in apps that don't make use of gpu rendering.
The UI in ICS is rendered completely by the gpu so checking/unchecking that option does NOTHING to the UI.
That myth needed to be put to bed.

You guys seem to know your game so how come it still lags in 4.0.3?
for some weaird reason it seems to be stable for me right now... I did check force gpu and 4.0.4 since it's unoffical there isnt any real fast roms for 4.0.4 thanks guys!
The first thing I do after a fresh ROM flash is change the animation scales to 0 in Settings>Development>window+transition animations. I also disable app drawer in/out animations in my launcher settings. The stock ICS animations are fairly obnoxious and much more pronounced than the GB animations. I do the same on my I9100 on CM9. Look at it this way, animations are wasted time, if they're a little over the top then it's more wasted time + more work. My GN is as smooth as my I9100 throughout its life; stock, modded stock, CM7, and CM9.

So I am guessing we all are seeing delays in animations which look like lag? it so so much smoother right now. Will report later on.
