I promised myself I wouldn't mess with my phone in at least two months after purchase, but as always, I couldn't contain myself.
I have unlocked the bootloader, flashed yakju and updated it to 4.0.4, rooted through temp-booting insecure boot and installed clockworkmod touch recovery.
My next step is to flash a custom ROM and kernel, but of what reason? What do they have that the stock 4.0.4 don't? Also, does the GN have a "flash counter" like the Samsung S2?
I could spend an hour listing the advantages of flashing AOKP, how about backing up, flashing a handful for yourself and having a look?
I'd suggest starting with AOKP, it's one of the more popular ROMs for the Nexus.
Simple answer is, battery life. Custom ROM's will usually give you the most juice out off your battery.
GN does not have a flash counter

Haha. I told myself a month and I made it about 9 days but that only because I found my laptop wasn't ready to flash. And best to test roms yourself for best experience. And roms them self usually don't give better battery but maybe some settings that are highly tuned to your usage might. I would think radios and kernels might benefit users better depending on the tweaks and how they interact with you and your rom. I am still running stock with a slightly modified stock kernel for uv'ing. I am researching bamf paradigm atm. Looking at details and user experiences and mention of any bugs that might affect me.

No flash counter, but the USB jig you may have left over from your SGS2 will get you into fastboot mode if you're ever "soft bricked".

Ok, good.
No, I don't have a USB jig nor a Samsung Galaxy S2. ^^
Just take a look at the Galaxy Nexus Development section... There's plenty of ROMs and kernels each with their pros and cons. AOKP allows for heavy modding so you could take a look at the rom thread. I still prefer CM9 for the smoothness it gives to my device!
What ROM and kernel are the best? I've been looking around and the general audience think "franco kernel" is the absolutely best, but what about the best ROM overall?
What differs AOKP from Milestone 4?
Which franco kernel is better of the nightlies or the milestone 2?
well if you dont have that many apps and widgets installed id say go for AOKP itll run smooth, give you great battery and all the customization it has makes it great
if youre one of those that has like 120 apps installed and 27 widgets id say go for CM9 or gummy

Imoseyon's Lean Kernel is far superior in my opinion. It's got far, far, far more customization.
Aokp is the go to rom really.

Milestone 4 IS aokp! Milestones are aokp's stable releases which should be bugfree, while builds (like build31, build32 etc.) are a sort of nightlies.

Aokp/M4 has a lot of features, but it has some bugs and isn't the smoothest. Go with bamf paradigm
What ROM and kernel are recommended if I don't want nightlies/experimentals?

First time Samsung user coming from EVO 3D. What are your recommendations for ROM's and kernels? And is CWM favored over stock recovery? I guess i will try them all tomorrow. Thanks in advance
-CWM Is yes the best and most used recoveries. (Are there even other ones, lol?)
-I recommend AOKP (Android Open Kang Project) Milestone 3 or the latest nightly, you can find these in the Android development section of the GNex.
-For kernels, they all act differently for everyone. Some people are great with franco kernels, and trinity, and james bond, and leankernel, just gotta try them all really . For example I'm getting the same if not worse battery with franco, but I might try James Bond kernels, (they are great they seem.) But they are all good in terms of performance.
Good Luck on the new GNexus it's a hell of a phone
I use GummyNex, much more stable and closer to stock than AOKP. I'm also using Franco's 18.2 nightly and get excellent battery life (around 10 hours). Just try everything out there till you find what works for you.
Just make sure you go to the 'CDMA Galaxy Nexus Android Development' for your ROMs. I learned that the hard way...

Look at Handtec, Expansys, NegriElectronics, eBay, Amazon...
try apex, it's very close to stock but also giving you lots of options to pay around with.

AOKP is extremely stable and offers a ton of options. Latest build is sick and allows you to remove the bottom softkeys in the power menu so you can use anything full screen and bring the buttons back with the power menu again...
welcome aboard! I just switched from Sprint and was rockin a epic Touch 4G (great phone) and have had this phone in my hand for a week now. Extremely easy to unlock, download and install the toolkit. It's a stickie in the develpment thread. the only mistake I made was not running the stock software for a few days to get a feel for it before flashing something new. I would flash a couple roms and see what they are about, then settle on one.
I'd also like to the recommend aokp which is a very stable rom. I use the stock kernel and don't really need any custom one .

Hi everyone!
Well, I finally switched over from my Driod Charge last week. Prior to that, I had the Fascinate for about a year. So, while I am new to the Nexus, I am certainly not new to Samsung, Android or flashing... as of now, I have unlocked and rooted my phone, but other than that, I am completely stock (and not minding it actually) I am sure I will get around to custom ROMs very soon though. But in the meantime, I have a couple quick questions:
1) Is ALL flashing now done through ROM Manager or Clockwork Mod (i.e. No Odin?)
2) As said, I am still stock (4.0.2) but I would like a kernel to flash, not a ROM (yet!) that will allow overclocking, wireless tethering, etc... suggestions anyone??
Thats really it for now.... just wanted to say HI to my "new" community here on XDA!
Joe
1 for roms etc, yes (use cwm, not rom manager)! only use odin when cw doesnt work.
2 franco.kernel, trinity, glados, popcornkernel and leankernel are all great
And welcome

1) Yes.
Odin is used for MAJOR **** ups only.
2) There are one or two kernels compatible with 4.0.2 in the forum bit I think Franco's one is 4.0.3/4 only.
I think james bond kernel is 4.0.2 compatible.
3) Flash a rom, there are some nice roms to be flashed. Personally I use AOKP 4.0.3.
Yea, I am sure I will get to ROMs soon enough.... but coming from the Charge, the dual core in the GN makes it feel fast enough so as it is!
OK... so no ODIN.
As far as the kernels... any show better battery life? Really the only downside to the GN, but I do have a spare battery and charge, so Im ok.

James bond is the only 4.0.2 kernel I know of.
Search around though and you might find another.
If you want a stock rom that's 4.0.3 then flash bugless Pete's rom.
Its pretty much plain stock.
I'm going to be flashing an SGS2 for someone I know and I was wondering what a good setup as far as ROM, kernel, recovery, radio is for stability and features.
They upgraded from a LG G2x running CM7.2 Nightlies so they have basic experience with custom ROMs, but they don't know all that extreme technical crap.
I'm thinking about Juggernaut because it has a lot of good tweaks and features or maybe CM7 since they aren't many thing on the non-working list.
Please reply with any helpful suggestions, I'm considering flashing an ICS ROM but I'm not sure if it would be stable enough for daily use.
Thanks
The ICS ROMs are suitable as DDs, so take your pick! Choose any of the T-Mo Leaks!
As of now, the kernels that come with the ICS ROMs are as is, so no worries there.
For Gingerbread, if you choose the Darkside ROM, it has a special kernel, made directly for the ROM, but you can still swap out for a different kernel.
With CM7, you can only use the kernel that's meant for it.
All other Gingerbread ROMs are customizable as you see fit.
I hope that helps!
Whatever ROM you choose, you can always ask more questions in its Thread!
I'd say
Dark side
Beast mod
Juggernaut
Not in any specific order
I'd lay off the ics unless your buddy is gonna update it often

I think I'll go with one of those modified ICS leaks and stay away from the AOSP until it goes into RC quality.
Mostly from CM7 he liked the custom gestures, audio tweaks and such. He really just wants good battery to last a while and has zero tolerance for lag so V6 will come in good use. I'm a port dev so I'll be able to throw in the beats libs and dsp manager.
How is the battery stats on the ICS leak?

For ICS use [ROM][ICS] :ARKSIDE.EVOLUTION.2:: [BETA2 [UVLC8][WiFi CALLING][5.06.2012]. I run it as my every day ROM and its nothing short of amazing. If you don't want ICS use [ROM] Telus SGH-T989D Stock, Rooted, Lightly Tweaked, 100% [CIQ Free] with [KERNEL] Synergy v0.10 [CK3+, Autogrouping, OC, UV, BFQ, BLN, OTG] it gets crazy battery life but is getting old.
Also be sure to wipe your phone via [TOOL]:ARKSIDE::SUPER::WIPE[ext4][2.8.2012]

Personally, I'd take an AOSP GB build over leaked TW ICS builds. RC6 CM7 is rock solid stable with no real bugs and tons of customization. Every bit as smooth as TW ICS imo.

But the issue is he wants better than stock battery life and AOSP delivers the exact opposite of that. But I'll see what he wants between all this tomorrow. For most novice users that I flash roms for its about finding a perfect balance between performance, stability, and features. So in simple terms: Noobs always want everything to be perfect and don't understand the concept of how difficult debugging roms is.
Sent from my SGH-T679 using Tapatalk 2
Personally. I wouldn't flash any ICS ROM's just yet. There are a few apps that I use daily that doesn't work with any of the leaked bases.
The GB ROM's that I liked were Darkside, Revenge of Macnut, Juggernaut, and Tuesday.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA
been using juggernaut5 for over a month now.....had the phone for about 4 hours before i had it rooted and rom'd. juggernaut has been very stable for me and i'm on the verge of trying out one of the ics roms built with the t989 kernel from tmobile-either romchicago or darkside.evolution
OK,
They want stability, performance, and battery life and I've heard about some recent superbricks in ICS for the SGS2 and Galaxy Note. So I think the best option for now is to stay on GB and go with Juggernaut 5 + Beats, DSP, V6 + whatever custom kernel. Final Decision. Or maybe ROMChicago if they feel lucky.
http://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/tibt5/heads_up_superbrick_bug_present_in_ics_leaks_for/
Now since this should be flashed as fast as possible I've been thinking about how Samsung has ODIN and you can make custom images for it, so if I could just package the CWM, System ROM, kernel, and Blaze 4G radio into an ODIN package. Flash it in like 2 minutes, setup V6 and be done with it.
I've been searching for some guides to create packages but most of them only show how to create it as a backup from the current ROM.
personally, i love M&S's roms, especially Bombardier. It goes super will with Synergy kernel v.10, the battery life and performance is amazing!
OK, Let me just say that I'm sorry for this thread but it turns out the actual phone is a stock SGS 4G running Froyo.
I thank you all for your input anyway.

On a closing note, Again I wanna thank everyone for their responses and I review and write guides for ROMs so what I learned here won't go unused. Plus I'm sure someone else I know will want a SGS2 flashed.
This is the ROM I flashed for the SGS 4G in case anyone was wondering.

The phone got stuck in ODIN twice (guide didn't mention to uncheck repartition) and I had to use the one click unbrick to get into download mode again. At first I almost had a heart attack because I thought it need JTAG to fix. So thanks to the devs responsible for that tool.
Development for that phone is almost dead but if there's one thing I liked about the SGS1 series they had some awesome stock ROMs.
The most important lesson I learned is that using ODIN is like playing with fire: It does cool s*** but it can ruin everything.

I've already unlocked and rooted, just not ready yet for a custom rom
I'm new to the Gnex too, but spent two years trying to get an ancient Galaxy Spica 5700 to run CM7...
Got the Gnex about a week ago, and immediately started looking around here. I chose AndroidME CM10, because it looked good, and in the developement thread no one seemed to have problems, and they said the battery life was very good. I can't remember if it's GSM only though.... Anyway I'm very happy with it, no probs at all, and battery life is good. I see that generally in America all you guys who use Google Now and all that and have different network frequencies complain about battery life, but I don't really use the phone that much, and with this ROM I get a few days with minimal screen use. There are also two other ROMs by the same dev, a modded stock JB and an AOSP JB. I like the look of the new Codename android 3.3.1, but in the dev thread too many people have little problems, and after years of limited functionality on my old phone I just want something stable and nice, to relax for a while. At least until I get bored...
RE baseband, If you look around in the forum (General forum I think,) you'll find a page all about basebands and with packages to flash them all. On my GSM I had to change the baseband, because you can't use the original baseband with JB.
I dunno what modding the Galaxy S was like for you, but based on my past with my Spica I'm loving my first Nexus device, it's all so easy! Good Luck

Hey, I came from Spica too. That was so buggy and slow despite the attempts by various devs. Used it for 2 yrs. GNex is so much better.
Anyway for the OP. I wanted the stock experience initially. So i am on Android Revolution and stock kernel. Wifi reception is pretty poor. Many have reported that on different ROMS. Will have to try out different kernels or wait till google gives a fix. There are no other issues and battery life is good. But i am getting bored with stock. Might try Xenon HD.
Xenon is a great choice had it till the new MIUI came out. For kernels I have had the best battery life with james bond. Have not tried slim bean yet but I ran slim ics and it was great. I think the rom was only like 50 mb

if you want stability, you should use CM 10.1 (rc4 or nightly)

Does your GF want to deal with flashing and upgrading ROMS/Kernels that are not Google Factory Images?
If the answer is no, go pure stock.
If the answer is yes, let her decide.
If the answer is a mix, let her research and if she doesn't want to deal with it go pure stock.
You could do stock ROM with a custom kernel. That would probably be my choice. You get the stability of stock, with the performance improvements of a better kernel. I have heard that a few folks on the forums here are rocking that setup.
I think franco, fancy, and AK are some of the top kernels right now (maybe not AK, please correct me).
CM10.1 with stock kernel.
