I've had Rom Manager Pro for along time now since my first Android and I was wanting to know if our phone uses it at all?
I don't see our model on the list but on one of my other phones we kinda shared one with another phone do we do that if we don't have a main one?
And what's that recovery touch? Has anyone every used that? Sounds pretty cool lolz

Yes it does. I use it all the time. Do NOT use any form of touch recovery. There is one out there that is safe but right now do NOT use touch recovery.
Touch recovery has been blamed for bricking phones best to steer clear of it altogether.
There are some issues with Rom Manager, I'm sure someone will let you know. FYI, Rom manager uses a v5.0.2.7 CWM based recovery for our phone. Do not use it with any of the ICS based roms, cwm is not compatible with them currently.

The gingerbread based ROMs usually come with a kernel that has recovery built-in so those are safe to use the way they are.
Can't emphasize enough though not to use recovery in ICS though.
Thanks,
but I was more asking is there a sections for our phone in the list in Rom Manager .
Also can I just click the flash recovery at the top of the App and is our phone in the list where you click download roms and it has a list of Rom updates and stuff like that?

Ah gotcha. First of all, I wouldn't recommend using rom manager to do anything but backups and restores. Yes, you can click Flash ClockworkMod Recovery, make sure you select the 'Samsung Epic 4G Touch'.
Lastly, I have no friggin clue what those roms/rom updates are listed there and how they get flashed or what would happen if something goes sideways so I stick with the XDA known and tried roms that you can get support for.
You cannot use Rom Manager because these need to be flashed according to the instructions posted with each rom. They are almost identical and its very easy to do.
Short version is, I recommend Rom Manager as an easy way to backup and restore your android OS from an interface. Beyond that, I think you're taking unecessary risks. There's a thread around here somewhere about how Rom Manger is very very bad.
I would recommend you read the instructions for any thread you are planning on utilizing closely and follow the directions listed in those threads. Don't assume past Android experience gives a license to skim the reading. Every phone is slightly different and has nuances that can become issues of glossed over. There are often reasons why the instructions are written the way they are.
I've had this phone for a while now, I was just re installing some apps and seen it and just wanted to know if it had a section for our phone that's its

You should not use rom manager, especially if you are on an ICS rom. It needs to install its own version of cwm and could royally mess up the phone.

Best bet is what you said - Power Off, then power+volume up to get into a recovery. As for recovery Agat's has been great! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1721065 and there are some specifically for CM9 and AOKP so if you plan on flashing any of those check those threads.

rom manager usually only has cyanogenmod anyways. besides you wouldn't even be able to flash it through rom manager anyways.
Correct, Rom Manager has never supported ROM Flashing for the E4GT
I flash through ROM manager all the time.
It doesn't list roms for the reason the previous person stated. Basically, it only supports cyanogen for that feature. So, even though I use it to flash roms, it is basically useless. The only reason I ever use it is because I am lazy and hate holding 2 buttons down in the far chance that it will boot in recovery and I dont have to reboot and start over. But, with custom shutdown menus being more popular

LOL aha that is what I thought he meant, threw me off there for a second though.
Don't the devs have to submit the links to their roms to rom manager? Has anyone done this? Many times the roms on rm aren't the most recent if development is pretty active.
even if rom manager had the roms. currently they can't be flashed through the program. rom manager just hangs. even when trying to simply backup.

its cool lol. I just had a really long agonizing discussion with my brother about it too. he came from a hero as did I and swore up and down he was flashing from the program rom manager not through recovery on this phone.
Oh, CWM, how MUCH I can't stand thee:
Anyway, here's a long version:
I can't stand using CWM for recovery.
(I initially had an OG Evo, and it was nothing but a headache, so I always used AmonRa, successfully, and use that or TWRP on my ALL my other devices, where I can...
I'very made other posts about its issues, and have gotten into it with Koush online before about all the problems with it, and how he just let's so many versions out into the wild that aren't working for different phones...
With the ET4G, I kinda had to use it, and was able to flash a working version thru Odin.
Whatever, I was able to use it.
Lately, Koush releases a touchscreen version, there are stories about it all over the web: so I go into Rom Manager to check it out:
It tells me that it's not yet compatible with the ET4G, but that my version of CWM is outdated, so I should flash a newer CWM....
LIKE AN IDIOT, I agreed.
Now, just when I finally have a chance to flash CM9 on my ET4G, after waiting SOOOOO long?
I can't.
Because now, my recovery's totally borked.
I can't even get my phone to do anything but bootloop the CM7 animation, and download mode is the only thing I can get into.
Now, I'm gonna have to spend all this time today fixing what shouldn't be messed up in the first place instead of enjoying CM9 like I should be doing.
(BTW: Koush, if you're listening: this will be the last time for sure I ever fall for that again.)
Yeah, I'm mad, Bro.

I never use ROM manager but doesn't cwm have to be packaged with a kernel in order for it to work? ie. we can't just flash a recovery like we could in the evo 4G days. Methinks if you just use odin to flash a kernel+cwm package you'll be back up and running in no time.

Oh, yeah: I can fix it, but my wife has my laptop till like 7pm, and I really don't wanna mess with drivers, Odin, all, that stuff on my desktop. I keep all my Android stuff on one PC (laptop) and I like having ADB, drivers, all that stuff, in one place...Just kinda threw a rock into my chain, on today of all days...
Sent from my PG86100 using xda premium
Edit: And, yeah, I knew that used to be the case with CWM (needed kernel flash), but when a known high-level dev is telling me basically, that "this updated version will work for that very specific Android device that you have", and that "I can use his app to flash it", I guess I wanted to believe him...
Eff that guy: He needs to spend less time stacking his money, and more time having some accountability for what he releases to the public.
/End rant.
So, this has nothing to do with Clockworkmod, you are really pissed that samsung requires recovery and kernels on the same partition.

For our phone.
There's definitely nothing wrong with CWM. Blame rom manager if you must place the blame anywhere besides yourself.
I bought rom manager to support clockworkmod and have access to the latest clockworkmod versions. I think they have provided a wonderful tool. Anyway, I actually never used it except to check for roms and latest clockworkmod.
I've flashed the touch version of clockworkmod (downloaded the .img file from the clockrkmod web site) on my ns4g using adb and fastboot (thanks to Paul627 for the tutorial).

+1 on 4EXT, That's by far my favorite recovery:good:
Where did you hear that it was coming to the sgs3?
I emailed madmaxx on it and he said he was really busy with allot of other models and he would look into our sgs3's since it's a popular device.
Hopefully we will see it soon:fingers-crossed:
CWM is great, but TWRP is just awesome.
For me, TWRP has these little things that just make sense, like a link to wipe dalvik/cache right after you flash something, option to queue up multiple zips to flash in a certain order, option to compress your backups (because they do end up taking quite a bit of space if you have multiple backups), etc.

I believe I read on their site that they may begin working in it at a future date. I'm satisfied with TWRP, but I'm hopeful that 4EXT is "in the cards" so to speak.

Yea I honestly think developers of new roms should block access to Rom Manager it is obviously buggy and for what ever reason it CAN brick phones just by trying to reboot to recovery... who knows how that is even possible. A reboot should not brick a phone it doesn't make sense to me... so rom manager must be doing something crazy when trying to boot into recovery unless someone knows how I can get my phone to download mode it honestly seems bricked.

Consequently I've wanted to ask this question too and I'm gonna keep an eye on this thread.
TWRP. It's the obvious choice. :good:
Cnexus built a recovery switcher that allows you to switch between cwm/cwm touch/twrp. I say install it, and try em all out
I know the first time I used twrp, I had an issue because if you have it set to check mdsum, it will fail if it can't find one. Simple, but it did kinda freak me out.

TWRP all the way, plus you can theme it! The one and only thing that annoys me about TWRP is that the clock is always off -__-
Both are great and different roms need either to work right. But in my experience trwp backs up and restores without error. Clockwork never restored properly on any of my phones from og evo, evo lte or my sgs3. But clockwork flashes radio updates better, at least my reception bar level or data connectivity.

Shortly after I installed TWRP on my Epic, it hard bricked when installing a ROM. I cannot say for sure it was because of TWRP, but when that happened I've never tried TWRP again, and I haven't had another bricked phone. Coincidence?? Possibly.

Coincidence, the epic 4G has a bug that caused it to hardbrick when flashing certain roms (memory fault in the kernel or something like that). There was a workaround for this though.
Might as well put my 2 cents in. I have used both recoveries on my devices. I have no personal choice as to one is better than te other issue. I can tell that once cwm was actually fixed and built for the Epic it worked perfectly prior to that when it was first ported over to the OG Epic it was hit or miss, the orange cwm. Oh well my Epic did just fine on both. My Galaxy Nexus works better with TWRP for whatever reason it just does and my S3 prefers CWM again never had an issue with either on those devices but when I use the other recovery on each of those devices they become temperamental and start acting up. I know it's funny but that's what I know of my devices. They are both very good recoveries and they have come a long way since the early days.

So let me ask this: when a rom dev suggests a recovery, is that just because that's what the rom was tested with? Have you had an instance where you've *had* to use a specific recovery (other then one kind working better on a specific phone)?
Thanks

I'm not sure how themeing a recovery is useful? It's not like I'm showing my friends, hey look at this cool recovery. But which ever is fine.

I flashed a lot of Roms on my epic, yes it could be coincidence, but like I said, shortly after flashing TWRP I was warranting my phone because it didn't make it through a flash. I tried everything including once when odining my epic my daughter yanked the plug out. I recovered from that even by removing my battery and plugging it into the computer. After TWRP, I couldn't even do that. And really I have no idea if it was the recovery, but yeah, I chose CWM.

No makes no difference, that's because that person has a personal liking for that recovery or like I said his device just responded better to that recovery. Makes no difference roms are not built for specific recoveries. Well not always there was an instance on the OG Epic where in order to flash cm9 the phone had to be re partitioned and a special recovery was necessary and the cm team built the recovery flash into the rom. That's another story for a different thread.

Sometimes recoveries don't like certain roms...doesn't happen often, but it can
I know on my EVO Shift, Sense roms could be flashed ONLY with CWM for some reason, as TWRP wouldn't flash it properly.

So betweem you and ed, I should be able to flash a rom with either recovery unless posts show problems flashing with a specific one. And, if I *were* to have problems flashing, I may want to attempt to flash using a different recovery....
If that's the case, I just might pick one recovery, and stick with it!

I started out using CWM but lately I've been using TWRP instead and I like the large buttons and touch interface of it. I'm sticking with it I think.
