hey
i was wondering if the google maps option in the car mode
can be replaced by another app such as waze
I'm wondering the same thing, I want to use navigon.
A temp. fix is using 'rotation locker' - my homescreen now works as the nav panel

Any news on this one? I have tried Locations in the past and have issues with it, and don't want an internet based nav (poor signal for me in many areas). I have Copilot and would like to put that as a nav option. HTC advise it can't be done - does anyone know any better?
Thanks.

Hey Guys,
Any programs that'll toggle the WiFi on or off based on my location (e.g, save my work location in the program so that it knows to turn on WiFi when I get to work).
Search for "locale", by "two forty four" in the market. It's a paid app, but do many other things beyond that.... you can automatically set almost everything based in location...

At $10, I'd like to see other opinions on the Locale app. Anyone here use it?
Yes, look for home wifi, it does just that.
Very simple to use.

Juice defender can control wifi usage based on location. Also uses mobile signal to pinpoint location instead of gps so saves your battery too!!
I picked a Verizon GNex at BB yesterday and have a couple questions...
First, I don't see where to turn GPS ON/OFF -- there has to be a way to turn it off and on -- right?
Second, after installing the apps I had with my Evo I attempted to purchase another app but the "Accept & Buy" button to complete the purchase would not work. I tried this with two different apps. Is Verizon trying to prevent use of the Google Market so they can have you go through there app market?
Thanks,
Brian

I saw that but it's not like any of those option clearly the GPS on/off. The three options:
Googles location service (lets apps use location data from wifi sources etc)
GPS satellites (lets apps pinpoint your location)
Location & Google search (lets Google use your location to improve search results)
OK, of the three the second one seems closest to what I'm looking for but there's nothing here that clearly says it turns the GPS on/off.
Brian
It does turn it off

Actually no! As I said, it's the most likely option but no where does it say that the GPS radio is turned off it just says that is "lets apps pin point your location". Everyone wants to know where you are at all times so they make it more difficult for you to turn off location finding tools because they want you to leave it on.
So, Google may allow you to disable GPS access for third party apps but still permit them (Google) to know exactly where you are because that information is money. If disabling this option stopped third party apps from accessing the GPS but still left the GPS on so Google could keep tracking you the wording of the option gives them the legal latitude to do just that.
So, in addition to wanting to save battery life it's nice to also limit the amount of tracking Google, and pretty much everyone else, does to you.
My Evo 4G had a widget that controlled: 4G (WiMax), BlueTooth, GPS and Wifi -- I would like that on my Nexus.
Brian
It's pretty obvious to me that that option actually does turn off the GPS antenna. It I don't think that there's any device in the world with a GPS antenna that cannot be turned off, unless it's part of the core functionality (e.g. with GPS receivers).
Put the power control widget on one of your homescreens - the middle one is GPS and you can quickly toggle it.

All the toggle in that widget does is turn "option 2" on and off. There is no 4G LTE toggle either. Also, no Verizon isn't blocking the market to force you to use theirs. They don't even have a separate app market.

Yep, after toggling I checked back and option 2 was turned off. It was the most likely option but I wish the wording was more explicit...
I also found that the market problem was somehow related to the fact that I'd added a second gmail account. I had to select the second account and enter my CC info there and after that the market worked just fine.

Yes Verizon only wants you to use their 20 or so apps. Enjoy!

Hello,
My I did the update yesterday to 1.28.163.9 and now my GPS can't localise me, I googled for this probleme and didn't found anything, I am alone in this situation ? is there a way to roll back ?
have a good day evrybody.
Hi, first thing I would do is download an app called 'GPS Test', run it and goto settings and choose Clear GPS then come out of settings and the app will show you how many satellites it can find.
This clears the GPS location data and forces or to find It's location again.
After a minute or two you should see it has a lock then just exit the app and try whatever app you where using before to see if it knows your location.
I seem to remember having to do this once after updating to 1.28
Good luck!

So after two long years of using, what I can only describe as the most stable phone I've ever used, I've upgraded to a galaxy s3.
My 2 daughters generally fight over who can use the iPod to watch BBC iPlayer when they goto bed at night, or when they're bored during the day..
I now have a phone sitting in a drawer and it got me thinking If there is any way I can give my desire a new lease of life and give it to my daughter to use for accessing the BBC website? That way one can watch on the iPad, the other on the desire.
I'm only concerned about them using the phone to call the emergency services by accident. Is there anyway I can disable the phone for making calls an still keep the wireless/functionality the same ?
Any comments appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Maybe you can hide call/dialer button from the app drawer (try apps like audio manager-you can lock/hide anything with this app. Also you can remove dialer icon from home screen
And just try searching on market there must be a way to disable it with some app
Also our good friend Google can always help you good luck

Airplane Mode Wifi Tool on Playstore is another alternative. Enables wifi on airplane mode.

Anyone else having issues with Google maps not working properly. It is always showing me behind my actual location or going down a street or two over from where I actually am. Any fix out there for Google maps cause version 7 and 7.5 are not working at all.
When I revert back to version 6 it won't lock on to gps either. It must be my phone e then. Any fix out there?
Which ROM are you running? If you do, how often do you flash Roms. One thing I experienced from being a flashaholic is that after awhile it will poop your GPS. My fix is to return phone back to stock ROM, turn GPS on and go back into recovery and flash ROM of choice. If that's not your situation then you could try multiple GPS fix apps out there

I would say it's not a Google maps issue. As of two days ago I had a nexus 5 with the latest version of maps and I use it frequently without the slightest issue.
Then two days ago I got the note 3 and I notice that navigation is behind a lot. It's the phone not Google maps

Working prefect for me on all roms
Official CM11 & Lean Kernel v1.1 Powered SM-N900T
I had the same annoying problem. The GPS would take a minute to lock, and would always think I'm a street or two over, and telling me to turn constantly. It annoyed the hell out of me. Strangely I flashed Willl03s CM11 rom and mine locks quickly now and is much more accurate. As earlier mentioned, I've had luck with using Odin and installing the stock rom too.

GPS works fine, hardware-wise, but not in Google Maps.

I am having this issue specifically with Google maps. I did thorough testing driving around tonight-- it does not happen with Waze. For me, the issue is not getting a lock-- it gets the location correct pretty quickly. The issue is that it stops updating maps (even though the phone is clearly getting current, accurate GPS data).
I was split-screening Google Maps and GPS Status. GPS Status updated location frequently and never showed an error range of above about 10-20m.
In Google Maps, the location sticks very frequently-- it will show me in the right location. Then it will stop updating my location (on the map) and catch up with me half-a-minute later or so. It does this same thing in any app that relies on Google maps, too.
Are you guys talking about driving around with google navigation or google maps? With google navigation it works flawlessly for me, if I drive around with google maps open it does tend to jump around for some reason. I dont understand why Navigation would be spot on but not maps.
use Waze
