You are right on that one. The correct sequence is to hold the power button, then press the home button.
Some other tricks that made my user experience better were:
Limit your data or set a data limit warning. Great feature. It only monitors data over the mobile network, however you can show the wifi data as well if you wish. Some ROMS have had this in the past, however it was sometimes unreliable. This is a built in sense 4.0 feature and works great.
Disable "Auto Review" in camera settings>continuous shooting mode. This will give you the best burst shooting experience and you will be able to easily switch to different camera modes, without the annoying best shot feature popping up. Also disable Limit to 20 frames to get up to 99 continuous photos.
Go to settings>more>nfc Enable nfc and scan your smart credit cards or any nfc tag, or nfc enabled phone.
If you use face unlock, go to settings>security>screen lock>face unlock>improve face matching. It drastically improves the time it takes for your phone to recognize your face.
Try out the friendstream lockscreen. Its pretty cool, some people may hate it, others may love it.
Hope this helps
In settings, power, Fast boot - when checked you are only doing a hot boot when you select Restart in power menu, uncheck it and you have the normal reboot(preferred).
And btw, both methods mentioned above posts on screenshot works.

Power Button and Volume down works as well it a ICS Tweak works on most of the ICS Models. Just tested it. Hold your power button + Volume down for around 3 seconds it will take a screenshot
Hi,
I came from a HTC desire which had a track pad so I am not sure if this is a new thing.
But to move the cursor left or right while typing, you can press the volume up / down to move it. Found it pretty helpful.
For the HTC swype keyboard which is swype on a much bigger keyboard.
Go to settings, keyboard. Then HTC input and enable the trace feature. It's replaced swype for me now.

There are total of seven screen to attach apps or widgets. In case you use only 5, you can remove the unused screens.
Press the unused screen, there will be an option there.

Stop sense 4.0 from craxhing
If you worry about the laggy sense 4.0:
settings
development section
Don't keep activities
It is unticked by default. Tick it (I went on recent apps to make sure it would be saved, then back) and untick it again. Seems to be a fault in the indication of the settings, because only now I got my phons as fast as expected.
Made my laggy sense go away and the fun has really started for me now.
After a total power off it is still working fine.
Great Hints! Just one question:

I'm very interested in NFC payment, and I have a smart card. When I enable NFC and place the card on the phone, I get a beep. But it doesn't look like anything's happened. I'm pretty dubious about downloading an app from the market which scans my card. Is there a real world use for this yet? Or an official, trustworthy app?

Sorry but you sound little confusing. Do you mean that option should be ticked and then unticked again and this will remove laggy sense?.

The both ways are right. Power button + Volume down 2sec. is the "pure" feature of ICS, screenshots are saved in /sccard/pictures/screenshots.Power button and then home button (keep holding power button) is the HTC Sense feature, images are saved in /sdcard/dcim. That is the different.

Just wondering for those of you who have the device already, have you guys found some neat features/tricks using 4.0 that haven't been documented or heavily advertised?
I would love to make a list of these features for other users to explore...
Lets get this started
List:
Reserved........
I know it's documented, but it was still a surprise to me - you can now finally delete apps straight from the app drawer, by dragging them just as if you were going to place them on the desktop, but then putting them in the recycle bin on the top.
No affiliation with apple. Or siri.
Sent from my samsung gt i9250 which is in the wrong country.
Nobody's talking about the search app. It's way better than the one in Gingerbread. Much easier to find stuff in your phone : music, app, sms, docs, etc. The old one was returning web search suggestion in 90% of the result... useless.
Search in browser let's you edit suggestion if you want to add something to it. But we lost popular web site suggestion
Just read it on Pocketnow but you can make folders in the favourites bar. Apologies if obvious.
When in the stock browser and you change orientation, tap the screen to make it rotate.

which runs TouchWiz, so it's not stock Android
Rotate the phone to the right whilst in any stock app (so the speaker grill and front camera are on the right). Notice that the back, home and task switch buttons have moved to the top of the screen so that they stay on the right.
When using an ics app hold down on an icon in the action bar to get a description of what it does

Not heavily advertised, but it should be:
The quick control in the browser. Almost the same as on honeycomb. Activate it in the labs settings of the browser. Love it!

NICE find! Thanks!
This is known about, however you said undocumented and I haven't a single document for the Nexus/ICS apart from on one which came with the phone, telling me how to fix the battery.
Hold the volume down and power key, and you take a screen capture. Which is very handy on occasions

If you tap the volume button which makes the volume bar appear, you can then press the icon to the left of the volume bar and it toggles between ring and vibrate.

In settings/about phone. Tap repeatedly on the android version number (4.0...) then a little android appears. Keep ur finger on it and it grows into a screen animation.
If u didn't know about this,I guess u r now thinking this is a joke. Or is it?
Need someone to test; try swiping the web pages up/down using 2 fingers

Just curious as to what everyone has found to make it easier to turn off the M8 instead of reaching all the way to the top for the power button, which can be awkward. I know there is a knock at the top of the screen, but that is almost as bad as reaching for the button. Any other options/suggestions?

What exactly do you mean? Are you talking about turning off the screen as BigAl assumed, or are you talking about powering down the device?
use the nav bar on custom roms to change their attributes .
I use double tap on home to turn the screen off, also double tapping the notification bar works (viper rom)

Yes, just screen off/lock. I have a custom rom and they just have the swipe or tap at the top of the screen which is the same as reaching for the power button if not more difficult (tried Viper). I'm on Revolution 5 right now and really like it...just want a better way to lock the device...double tapping home sounds good. Is there a downloadable app or flashable addon compatible with Revolution?
using his kernal
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=52016545
swipe to turn off screen
I know there are many in the play store...was just wondering what other M8 owners used before I try them all
i use an app called knock lock. you set where you would double tap to turn off the screen. pretty nice add on for the gesture controls. plus no root needed. i set mine at the center

I use flar2's kernel. Includes sweep 2 sleep the bottom of the device to shut off the screen. No need to run an extra app. He also has a module you can use on stock kernel (need root though).

If you by turning off mean sleep, then:
Swipe2sleep isn't really needed in ARHD rom, as the Sense6 Toolbox allows you to customize the behaviour of the control bottons in the nav bar.
I've just setup long-press the home botton to sleep. Works fine and easier than swipe (IMO)
I use widgetsoid, create an invisible toggle button to turn the screen off which fills the bottom half of my screen so one click off without ruining my homescreen.
I use a Dot View case and close lid...does that count...

I remember as a kid, watching the Jetsons, and a "hard day at work" for George was when he had to "push teh button six times." I think we're surpassed that.
I'm talking about the using the volume buttons as shortcuts to access Qnote and the Camera. The first time I did it I selected the A Better Camera app and it worked just fine, then I uninstalled the app later because I couldn't figure out how to change it. The next time, after uninstalling ABC, I held the volume down button it asked for another app so I selected the default camera app. Now I want to go back to ABC but I don't know how to do it. I don't know what cache settings to delete or how to get to them to reset the Shortcut keys.
Anyone know?

Has anybody noticed that the gestures dont work flawlessly as they did in JB.
you keep rubbing the screen like mad and nothing happens at time. or is it specific to my device?
I hate the screen to the left of my home screen, how can I remove it?
Open the home screen you want to remove, long press anywhere on that screen until you see the WIDGETS button at the bottom, press WIDGETS button, then just long press the screen you wish to remove and drag to the top to remove.
To change or add back just do the same, but instead just put a check in the widgets you want adding. HTH

What did I just post above? You don't need root or anything else to remove it. However you will have to leave at least one widget, that cannot be removed.

There are 2 screens to the left, you can remove the first one easily. The last one only the widgets can be removed except for one.
Just use an other launcher...
Use different launcher. Even custom Roms have that screen. I think it is unremovable.
