How do I check to see if my screen is a not so good one I see the lines sometimes when the screen is off they are purplish is that what everyone is talking about?
Also my GS2 seems to be not as bright as my Exhibit 2 any idea why shouldn't these phones be really bright and stand out?
maybe I got a bad screen.
any help would be appreciated.
yes this is what lots of people complain about. I have had 4 phones with this issue, 3x black and one white. I have one that was listed as a march 2012 batch and it has even worse issues then the one I exchanged it for.
IMHO there really needs to be a class action lawsuit aginst samsung for these defective units.

No further down in display settings....uncheck that....also I have brightness on full blast...auto brightness defeats the purpose of our screen it really does. I still get great battery life

Hi all, I am on my second device but had up until now never experienced screen flicker at all.
I open up power settings, click on the graph at the top and I can see a the graph kind of lightly pulsating/flickering. I've tried it on fixed brightness levels and automatic and seems to do it on both.
Anyone else able to test it and see if they see it too ?

I'm on an HT23 device, bizarre, I've asked a couple of colleagues here at work to check it and make sure its not my eyes playing tricks on me.
Nothing on my HT23.
Before this gets closed.......I'm convinced not everyone can see the flicker and those who can may well experience it to different extents.
Sadly, I can see the flicker of DLP projectors all also know as "the rainbow effect" whereas many others cannot.....
flicker may not be the correct term, its like a really minimal strobe effect, its like the voltage to the brightness is being constantly altered by a couple of percent rapidly.
It's visible on my phone by myself and some colleagues using 50% brightness fixed and auto
and as I said in post 3, if people think this should be in another thread, or I have violated any rules and annoyed people please feel free to get a moderator etc to delete the thread.

I have provided test cases for how to reproduce this kind of flicker before. Today I reviewed another two HOXes of colleagues and so far I have not found a single HOX that I cannot make flicker. I know some are defiantly stating their phone doesn't do it. Maybe there is one out there. But I am now up to 8 phones that I have made flicker and I have yet to be shown one I cannot get to do it!
However, all of them require the battery level to be below 50% to make it reliably happen.
And yes, my wife insists she cannot see the flicker...so not everyone may realise/see it anyway.
There are 2 huge threads about the same thing btw, screen flickering...
I have the exact same thing also. It's not only in the battery menu but sometimes when i'm viewing pics, on screen with grey color is dominant it is visible more but i am used to living with that already since it's a known bug and software related, it is going to be fixed for sure in the upcoming updates. And yes, my wife and some of my friends can also see it happening, the strobe effect, trembling kind of thingy that is hard to explain.

just fyi, i went through 4 phones, all flickered, then 5th and 6th didn't flicker at all. so there are some out there that genuinely don't flicker.
I see it too. As if the refresh rate isn't correctly set.

There are two components to what people are referring to as "flickering."
1) Nvidia PRISM controls (or tries to) the backlight to save energy.
NVIDIA PRISM Display Technology - PRISM (or Pixel Rendering Intensity and Saturation Management) reduces a mobile device’s backlight power while simultaneously enhancing the pixel color to deliver the same visual quality with substantially extended battery life.
It's more noticeable than it should be and is an issue on the Asus Prime also. We may have to live with it in some form.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1542367
2) Graphics issues including "flickering," task bar corruption, funky appearance of the camera app and others are related to the Teg3 graphics drivers which are supplied by Nvidia. HTC acknowledged in the thread this should have been posted in that they identified the problem on May 2 and an update (not 1.29) was forthcoming. The Prime experienced this too and it took multiple updates to resolve. Let's hope Nvidia/HTC gets it right in one shot.

So I've noticed that when I hold my GS3 next to my sisters hers looks brighter than mine, hers isn't rooted it's running stock TW. I'm not sure if it really is a brightness thing or if her colors are just more vibrant, I can't really tell. Also the bottom of my screen is oddly brighter when viewing blacks than the rest of the screen. Anyone know what this is or if it's fixable? I read somewhere that morfic's kernels make the colors more accurate or something like that but I'm not sure if it's true.
Info:
Rom: Frosty JB v3.0
Kernel: Stock
Modem: LI7
Gotta replace it.... My old one was yellowish. Now my new one makes a popping sound when playing music, you can't win them all.... My first one had a broken power button
Samsung quality control is ****

Are you using automatic or manual brightness when comparing? Auto brightness on a lot of JB roms are somewhat broken.
Manual for both, I flashed higher brightness levels that Wanam made and that sort of fixed the brightness thing. When comparing on lowest brightness hers is still noticeably brighter but on max it's about even. Mine actually looks a little brighter but the whites on her screen are more accurate or "crisp" so it appears that they are about even when mine is most likely brighter. This didn't fix the black screen issue unfortunately, I think it's also important to note that she has a white GS3 and I have a blue one, I looked on the internet and in some comparison videos where they do a side by side of both with a blank white screen the white S3 is noticeably brighter so that may be why.

Not saying that there isn't a problem but it could all be an illusion. With a white phone the color probably makes the screen look whiter or "brighter" as compared to a darker colored border on ur blue phone

Two things to consider.
Toghle the display setting for Auto Adjust Screen Tone.
Also, unless you are both on the same rom you wont be doing apples to apples. DJ' Frosty roms include the Bravia Engine i believe. This alone could cause the differences you are seeing. Odin back to stock, same build as the other phone. Make sure the settings are all identical. (Not just display, but all settings. Dev options, battery saver, etc)
If youre still having different results then you may have hardware issues.
One very Important question to ask yourself....would you even notice that your display might be sub par if you didnt have the side by side comparison?
Consider that before thinking about sending it in. Often you will get a refurb in return which can have much more annoying issues.

Yeah, I didn't really plan on sending it in, it's not that big a problem with higher brightness levels by Wanam so it's not really worth it. I was just wondering if something caused it or if it was a defect but as you said above the bravia engine could cause it so I'm okay with it, I'd rather have my rooted, less bright, boss of a phone running frosty JB v3.0 than stock TW with a slightly brighter screen.

Often the levels are set with battery savings in mind. Also i doubt any manufacturer will set ranges to include true maximum as it could shorten device life and some components may have different tollerances from one batch to the next.
Yes setting levels too high can cause damage if you are not careful. People still make mods for this stuff for the same reason they mod every other part of android, to get more out of their device! Just about everything you see here on xda comes with some level of risk.

I had this problem when I was using the power-saving feature.
Even after disabling powersaving my screen was all dark and messed up just like yours.
To fix it I had to enable powersaving, then go to power saving options and uncheck all four of the powersaving methods, then finally disable powersaving.
Only after that did my auto-brightness start functioning correctly again.

BTW im in north east MD...the eye past directly over us here ..we are about 1 hour and 20 minutes from AC new Jersey...
Mine also appears to be a bit on the low side. It is not at the lowest, but auto never appears to hit the highest brightness. When i am in sunlight, i have to untick auto and move the slider to max in order to comfortably read the screen. Hopefully it will get fixed.

I've always thought Samsung's auto brightness sucked regardless of phone. The note 2 is no exception.
Try some apps in the play store, they work better.

SGIII didn't have any issue with brightness at all. At least for me.
Galaxy Nexus is absolutely horrible on the other hand. And I'm too lazy to play with AOKP adjustments so I have to do it manually everytime.
My Note II does appear a little darker than it should but I thought it might be only my perception. I'll take closer look at it.

I thought I had the same thing. My phones brightness is all the way down with the auto box checked. I did however uncheck it and then the brightness dropped way down. I chalked it up to auto taking over and misrepresenting what the level of the brightness was on the screen. Dont know if you are seeing that or if you are seeing a true glitch.
i thanked all for your feed back...its obviously not just my phone...again my GS3 works very well...my note 2 not at all...I wonder if samsung set this up like this on purpose to save battery..either way auto-brightness is unusable for me...

I agree with that.
Still, these displays DO flicker.
To be specific: Galaxy S3 and Note 2.
There is a considerable amount of flickering on these displays, comparable with old CRT monitors switched to 60 Hz.
They glimmer like neon tubes. When you swing them fast, they don't leave continuous traces, but discrete, sliced traces.
Try it yourself. Denying it won't change it.
If you don't see it with your own eyes, then your eyes might be just a bit "lazier", or you might want to check them.
Whatever you do or don't do, try not to humiliate people who do see this flickering.
And yes, to the author of this thread: if you can, shoot Note 1 and Note 2 side by side, so you can eliminate these differences in frequencies from the quote above.
Wait, what frequencies? My Note 1 does not have a frequency... the pixels emit light continuously (only their value is changed every 60th of a second - if it's changed at all, not on still images - but they do not turn of and back on 60 times per second... unlike Note 2's).
I needed to run my old crts at 75 at least to not go crazy with flicker so you cant call my eyes lazy

I guess Im just overreacting then. Funny cos yeknow how YouTube updated their app and when you tap on the search bar you see a plain white background (that if you paused search history). Well for me, I saw a kinda dark thick line running across the screen. Not obvious but a very very faint dark thick line.

Try downloading a video designed to free up pixels that are otherwise dead.
They're normally a few minutes long and alternate between bright red, green and blue at different intervals.
