Brut.all of XDA has released the program APKtool which make the process of editing any APK file much easier, especially XML editing. Before you had to use a few different programs (Smali, hex editor, etc) to do the same thing. A future release is going to have the decompiler dump into an easy to import into Javabeans/Eclipse format.. so nice
Program and Usage link;
APKTool 1.2
Setup;
Before you start, download from the link above both the apktool-1.2.0.tar.bz2 and apktool-install-windows-2.2_r01-1.tar.bz2 and extract them to your windows folder.
Usage;
Decoding APKs;
Code:
apktool d <file.apk> <directory to output to>
Compiling APKs*;
Code:
apktool b <directory of decoded apk>
*The compiled apk will be saved to the sub directory "dist", which is in what ever directory you choose to compile.
Output structure;
Smali directory - The output of classes.dex, the code to the apk
Res directory - Your resources, the images and layout/structure xmls
Lib directory - Shared library files
Dist directory - The apk output of the "apktool b" command, if you didn't run it you won't have it.
Build directory - The compiled output of the "apktool b" command, like what you would see if you just extracted an apk file with 7zip. If you didn't run it you won't have it.
General info;
Once you have your edited apk from the Dist directory you'll need to sign it. I use Dave Da illest 1 of XDA's modified script for signing. Just place your apk, this should be the only apk in this folder, in the same folder that you extracted the auto-signer to and execute sign.bat. The script will output your_app_signed.apk, which is your signed and ready to load on your phone apk.
If you'd like to decompile/compile an apk file that doesn't have a classes.dex, like framework-res.apk, just place any classes.dex into the apk and it will decompile. If you don't do this apktool will through up an error. Just remember to pull the classes.dex out before you sign it.
Videos;
Editing an Apk file with APKTool;
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XXgYVHTcl6c
Editing a Jar file with APKtool;
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VAekeWiqHcY
Why?;
Localization / Translation
Themeing
Adding in features or taking them out
Impressing friends and family, lol
etc..
Issues;
I noticed that while the new version 1.2 works great on the framework-res.apk file, it seems to have issues with other System/app files like Settings.apk,Phone.apk, etc. For these files use version 1.1.1.
Hopefully this is helpful, I tend to ramble.

Will do, not having a good time at the moment as I can't seem to edit launcher.apk with this tool. Not sure why. basically I decompile, edit then compile but having issues when transferring it back to the phone.
EDIT: I just get a black screen when trying the new modified .apk file.
Why to create new threads, if apktool has its official thread here

However, not sure how to fix it.

I think you can't install Launcher just like that, because it's system app. You should do it through update.zip file.
Try to not use apktool, but just unpack Launcher.apk, remove META-INF dir, zip it back, sign and install. If you will get similar problems, then they can't be related to apktool (because you didn't even use it), but to something else.

If I unzip it, remove META-INF dir, zip it back, sign + install and it works fine. It doesn't work when I edit 1 file by decompiling and compiling, sign, upload it fails but it also fails using APKManager.
EDIT: I have also tried using notepad++ / notepad to edit the xml both to the same issue.
Err... you know, your problem is for sure related to signing/installation and not to apktool. Key error line is here:

Could you explain, how is it possible, that you can properly sign rezipped apk, but you can't reapktoold' one? If you get signing issues, then this is totally irrelevant what apktool does. All files could be random binary strings as well cause they aren't even read.
This thread can be deleted or moved to the bin or where ever it needs to go!

Hey guys... really trying to theme for the first time with xml files.
I have done modifying of png which are easy, but just lenghty and detailed.
So now that Gingerbread is out, some of the items have been moved to the xml files.
indeterminate was from 4 and now down to 3. but I want to increase to 8 to mimic honeycomb. Also the progress horizontal was once a png reference file now its in the systemui.apk xml too.
Anyhow short version.... anytime i edit more then 1 line at a time after decompiling, when trying to say it will ask to save as text.
Whats the best file editor for xml? or recommendations.
I use notepad++ on windows, you can also import your decompiled apk into eclipse and use that, it'll also report any errors or mistakes you might make.
Hope this helps.
Yeah I have been using that do and any time I compile and flash it just gives me boot loop.
Question about proper importing to eclips.
Whenever I just flat out decompile ... do my modification, go to recompile, it get errors. In apktool and apkmanager.
Should I extract the resource file and class dex out and then decompile. Cus when I have the resource file in the same directory....at least last nights attempt, apktool finale didn't give me an error and compiled.
I've done a decompile just from apk and imported to eclips and when I try to run, gives error.... "no style availiable" or something like that

[Guide][DDKQ8] Remove "Swipe screen to unlock" | Center lockscreen Clock | more...
No guide can explain every bit of information a beginner needs to know to achieve the wanted results. You need to make an effort and have patience to learn what you need.
This guide assumes that you have some basic knowledge like managing files on your phone, setting permissions, using command prompt on your computer. I will not explain what is ADB or Root Explorer or how to use them. google can help with that.
The steps described here are the steps i did on my computer (windows) and my rom (rooted, deodexed). i cannot promise to offer support, i'm a semi-noob myself.
standard disclaimer applies: Do it at your own risk & Backup your system before trying any of this.
What you will need:
• apk file compiler/decompiler: i will use apktool
• archive manager: winrar, 7zip
• Text editor : Notepad++ is recommended
• A way to manage files on the phone: ADB, Android Commander, Root Explorer
• an image editor (for some parts): Photoshop, Gimp, Paint.NET...
Part I. Decompiling
1. First you need to download and install apktool which allows you to decompile apk files and rebuild them. some people prefer APK Manager but i find apktool simpler to use.
Download these two files and export them to your Windows directory.
apktool-install-windows-r04-brut1.tar.bz2
apktool1.4.3.tar.bz2
2. Pull the file framework-res.apk from /system/framework/ on your phone and place it on your computer. for exemple under C:\lockscreen\
3. Now open a command prompt window and change the current directory to C:\lockscreen\ by entering the command
Code:
cd c:\lockscreen
Then decompile your apk file by entering the following command
Code:
apktool d framework-res.apk
This will create a new folder named framework-res within it are the decompiled contents of framework-res.apk
Part II. Editing files
Remove "Swipe screen to unlock"
1. Open \framework-res\res\values\strings.xml
2. Find lockscreen_unlock_guide_text
3. In that line, delete Swipe screen to unlock
Note: \res\values\strings.xml is for English language. if you're using a differnet language on your phone then you have to edit the corresponding strings.xml file in the proper values directory. for exemple if you're using French then you'll have to edit the strings.xml file under values-fr
Change the date format on the lock screen
1. Open \framework-res\res\values\strings.xml
2. Find mid_month_day_mid_wday_no_year
3. Replace E. d MMM. with the format you want.
Reference:
d numeric Day of the Month (1)
dd numeric Day of the Month (01)
EEE short Day of the week (Mon)
EEEE long Day of the week (Monday)
M numeric Month (1)
MM numeric Month (01)
MMM short Month (Jan)
MMMM long Month (January)
yy short year (09)
yyyy long year (2009)
exemple: yyyy MMMM d, EEEE to display 2012 March 12, Monday
Center the lockscreen clock and date
Explaining this mod step by step would take too long. All the editing is done in a single file \res\layout\zzz_keyguard_screen_clockwidget.xml
I uploaded the edited file (not compiled). All you have to do is replace you original file under framework-res\res\layout\ with this one before you compile. Advanced users can take a look at it, compare it with the original and edit it if they want/can.
I also replaced the charging icon that appears on the lockscreen. The png file is inluded with the xml file. To apply it, after you're done with Part III of this guide, open your modded apk file with winrar/7zip, browse to \res\drawable-mdpi\ then drag the png and drop it in the apk.
Part III. Creating the modded file
After we're done editing the xml files, we will recompile them and update the original apk with the modded ones.
1. Go back to that command prompt window and enter the following command to recompile the files
Code:
apktool b framework-res
(no .apk at the end)
when it's done, you will find a new folder under framework-res named build where the compiled files are placed.
2. Go to framework-res\build\apk\ copy the resources.arsc file
3. Open your original framework-res.apk file with an archive manager like winrar or 7zip (do not extratct, open with) and paste resources.arsc inside it.
4. If you used the edited zzz_keyguard_screen_clockwidget.xml file, then you have also to copy the compiled version from \buid\apk\layout\ and paste it under the same path inside your apk file.
Now your framework-res.apk is modded and ready to be installed.
5. Place the apk in your phone under /system/framework/ and set its permissions to rw-r--r--
Note: Some may prefer to copy the file to /system/ first, set the permissions and then move it to /system/framework
6. Reboot
Changing the font of the clock:
For some reason, this clock is not actual text, it does not use a font. Instead, the numbers are png files placed under /res/drawable-mdpi/
So to change the font, you will have to make new png files for each number, plus one for the column )
I uploaded the ones i made. you can take a look at them to note the dimensions and names of the files. you have to use those same names. also notice that there are two different files for the number one.
After you're done modding your framework-res.apk and just before you send it your phone, open it with winrar and browse to /res/drawable-mdpi/ then drag the png files you made and drop them inside the apk.

i can only make a flashable zip for specific roms and themes. maybe i will see what roms out there are based on DDKQ8 and make a couple of zips.
i usually prefer making guides than making falashable zips so anyone can apply the mod on it's own specific system.

find mid_month_day_mid_wday_no_year
in that line, change E. d MMM. into yyyy. MMMM d., EEEEE

posibilities
is it possible to move the framework thing to another stock rom using maybe titanium back up?

HOW TO CHANGE .APK ICON USING APK MANAGER.
Many people have asked how to change icons of apps in app drawer,once it was my question too,and I searched every corner of xda to find a thread explaining me that but it was of no avail even though i FOUND one but it didn't work on my sgs2.Therefore,I decided to help everybody who is having the same problem including me.So I brought you the easiest 'n simplest way to change the icons,it's lenghty as many would call it but once you get the hang of it,you'll be changing the icons of 'n on.
JUST FOLLOW THE STEP BY STEP GUIDE;
1. Copy Settings.apk in the folder called "place-apk-here-for-modding"
2. Start the "Script.bat"
3. Choose point 22 "Set current Project"
4. Choose your app you want to extract
5. Choose point 1 "Extract apk"
6. Go to the folder called "Projects" 7. Choose your app you just have extracted
8. Choose the folder called "res"
9. Look in the folders where the icon is.
10. Change the icon but be sure it have the same size ("mdpi: 48x48" hdpi: 72x72" xdpi: 96x96")
11. Go back to script windows or start script.bat again
12. Choose point 22 "Set current Project" again
13. Choose point 3 "Zip apk"
14. Choose point 12 "sign apk"
15. Go back to the folder "place-apk-here-for-modding" now should have a apk here that is called signed"NameOfYourApp"
16. Copy it to your Sd card and install it on your device.

7zip
Thanks a lot for this thread very usefull.
We can change the icons with 7-zip when we install a mod like Jkay.
1. extraxt your apk from your mod with 7zip
2. Open the apk with 7zip
3. Go into res/mipmap-hdpi for the Sgs2
4. Insert your new icon to replace the older
5.Replace the old apk
Apk manager is also very interesting to decompile the apk. This allow to change the code to make big modifications like the Domination mod.
PS: Sorry for my bad english language
Using the method in the OP you could very easily open up a can of worms if it contains badly patched 9's.
I'd personally use the universal theme template, a lot quicker, easier and safer compared to apkmanager, and it creates a backup.
I tried your method but it does not work on my sgs2 XWLPF deodex with last syiah. I cannot install the setting apk created on my phone.
I agree, although this thread is very helpful, I recommend if you're not changing any xml code or .9's... don't decompile just use UFT...
I know it's hard for some people and find decompiling and compiling complicated,so they choose 7-zip.. It's faster and easier I agree but I made this tutorial to let people learn how to use apk manager too.

Yes but the title suggests to "change the apk icon" in which you do not need to decompile the APK to do so... maybe you should rename the title?

Great guide Rizal. Decent English too. Lol. Proud to be Sundanese..
In my opinion, there are other more simplified tools that utilized apktool better (I use apkmultitools and vts (virtuous ten studios)) but people needs to know the basic right..
And I think, you need to put the java\bin directory in Path in windows system variables (or Java_home in win8). And it's better (I think) to put sdk directory (adb, fastboot), apktool and the smali jars files in the Path too, so that users can access from any folders/directory.

I've seen other guides say that resources.arsc should be copied from the old apk and stored in the new one.... is that necessary?

Can anybody shed any light on this?
Hey rizal, following your decmpile/recompile method, the apk wont install, signature problem.

There are some problems when signing the apk. The workaround for this: use some tools (ticklemyandroid does good jobs) to completely signing the apk (I've done this when modifying systemui.apk), you can also learn from it (learn some of its codes). Or just move files that u've modified from the modified (recompiled) apk to original apk (7zip is your friend)

I don't think it's necessary. But keep in my mind my post above. So it's like u keep the old resource but put the modified (and compiled) files to the original.
