Hey guys,
I know that the screens on these phones are turning out to be junk, but I'm looking for some opinions on whether my particular issue (which I don't think has been brought up here before) is a hardware problem, or if it just looks like a software bug.
I've attached a picture of the glitch, which appears as two lines of random pixels that flicker between pink and green. I've circled in red the pixels that were doing it at the time (it only seems to happen with darker colours). The picture is GTA3, but I know that it also happens in the music app and when flicking between sense themes (although it's harder to reproduce in those apps). Oddly I've played Spirit HD too, but that doesn't cause it.
So what do you guys reckon, is it more likely a hardware issue or is this something that a driver update could fix, and is anyone else having this problem?
Thanks
Apparently the attachment didn't work, so here's a link: img713. imageshack.us/img713/7762/phonebug.jpg (remove space after the first dot)
enough with this FUD the screens are not junk, in fact they are amazing and made iphone owners shivers
the software has a glitch causing all sort of graphical corruption ie not the screen, glitches that goes away are software, glitches appearing in the same place in all phones are software, glitches that never manifest in certain apps are also a sign of software issue
software is no problem, no one updates their phones faster than HTC
end

OK fair enough, but given the amount of people complaining about screen flex issues and the like, surely I can be forgiven for thinking otherwise?
I raised the topic because this doesn't seem like the "software issues" that everyone is talking about though (the ones with flickering status bar etc).
Thanks for your input
I have had no issue for 4 days and noe all of a sudden I'm getting a red box outline all the way around the screen when selecting options in some menus very random

A red box around the whole screen? I think that's caused by the keyboard. I never experienced this on my phone because i use swype but i see it very often if i use the emulator. try a different keyboard. perhaps this fixes your issue.

i think that's a debug option in developer settings...indicates whenever menu speed is above a certain threshold afaik...i might be wrong though.
disable "Strict mode", reboot, wipe cache & dalvik for the hell of it...

Okay I don't know if this is a bug in every Android version that still hasn't been fixed or is it an app that's causing it.
What happens is when I would be using an app like for example Google talk. I would try opening YouTube it would open calculator. And if I try opening messaging it would still open calculator. No matter which app I'd open it would open the wrong app. And I either have to kill all apps or restart my phone

I have had a similar error on multiple versions of android where you hit the back button and it starts to cycle through several different apps.
Yup happens to me on a few occasions. It just cycles like axion said
If you open apps continually without closing them or going back to the homescreen then pushing back will cycle through them.. that's how it has always been. That's also how it is on WP7

I've seen this once on my Galaxy Nexus only, never on a Nexus S, of GS2. A reboot seemed to resolve the issue. I've not seen it again since.

You're missing the point. It has nothing to do with the back button or cycling through programs. The problem is icons launching the wrong apps.
I'm on 4.0.2 stock and if had this happen once since I got my SGN. Never on any other of my Androids. A restart fixed it.

This is an absolutely absurd and incorrect statement. There is nothing "defective" about the phone. It's a software issue that occurs under a fairly specific set of circumstances.
I've had this happen starting with 4.0 builds on the Nexus S as well as on the GN. It didn't happen pre-ICS. What it does occur hitting back actually will back through the entire stack of activities oddly enough.
When this occurs you can back through the stack to a point, hit home and then hit the offending icon again and it will resume in the stack at the point in which you hit home. If you actually back entirely down the stack you'll get to the home screen and the expected app will finally launch. Depending on what's been opened since the last reboot though this can be a huge pain.
From looking in to this the only real thing I found reported was an issue with activity re-parenting. This was causing activities that allowed re-parenting to be launched in the wrong context and causing a similar behavior.
So far I've only noticed it occurring with the gapps (Messaging, Music) launching the wrong activity, but this is merely an observation.
If you can isolate a manner in which to recreate this scenario it would be helpful to report it, as this is definitely not the intended behavior. If you don't want to report it, but believe you can recreate it I can test it on a few devices / builds and submit it.
So far I haven't been able to purposefully recreate the issue, although I've spent minimal time trying as it is only a minor annoyance. If it occurred more frequently it would be another story.

No, I've just backed down the stack. I am curious as to the trigger for the behavior though as it is a rather uncommon occurrence.

But the OP clearly destroys your theory seeing as how this has happened on other handsets (pre-ICS as a matter of fact) as well. What's your rebuttal for that? To add to that, if a device pre-ICS did have this problem... Would it not be considered defective? *Keeping in mind that most people don't have the problem.* I have absolutely no issues no matter the number of apps I have open. So is my device defective because everything opens as it should? As I said before, this is a very small group of people who are experiencing this so I think that negates that something isn't defective. There are plenty of "defective" products that function generally as intended but have small quirks. Your turn...

I don't see how anything is "destroyed". The fact remains that you have an app launching an activity that does not belong to its package. The back button then proceeds to back down the activity stack rather than properly exit the app when the main activity is exited.
The fact that it is only noticed by a small subset of users is not indicative in any way of a "defective" handset - its far more likely that it's a very specific software issue triggering the problem.
The fact that the sub system is allowing the user to back down the ENTIRE activity stack with the back button rather than exiting properly when the main activity of *each* package is exited doesn't exactly scream bad hardware....

I get your point but something being defective doesn't always dictate that it's a hardware problem, wouldn't you agree? I never specifically said it was a hardware issue. Either way, it's hard to say what the REAL issue is until someone takes time to reproduce this. Just for reference though: If a hardware/software manufacturer cannot reproduce said issue, they'd deem said products experiencing it defective.
Yep I know what you mean, happens to me on Google Music.
Th easiest solution I found was to force stop the app that's bugged out.
I've had this too. Swiping away the app I'm trying to open and the one it is opening instead has fixed it for me.

Defective software I have no issue with - that's a harsh classification for a bug, but not incorrect.
Your statement of "Return it" followed by "most of us do not have these issues" seemed to imply a belief that the physical unit must be defective (in comparison to a unit that did not experience this issue) rather than a behavior or set of behaviors causing as software issue as most users do not experience this. Thereby returning would resolve the issue.
Given the symptoms present when this occurs I can't imagine this to be true i any way, shape or form. Especially given that this bug has existed since 4.0 hit AOSP and on builds for the Nexus S as well (hence why it's absurd to blame this on a singular hardware fault of a single device).
I am interested in reproducing the issue, or capturing a logcat the next time it occurs (it only seems to happen when I am in the car unfortunately) to see if the WindowManager of ApplicationManager are supposedly starting the proper activities or the issue might lie with the package manager.
I've had this happen when i open a lot of apps without closing them and use the multitasking button to switch between apps.

I made a topic of this myself.
Someone above said this is hardware, but i doubt this, because this glitch is only on the drop down menu, it is not random but outlined. A screen problem would cause this at any place on the screen.
What do you guys think of this?
Seems to be a Tegra3/ICS issue. The Transformer Prime had similar problems for months.

Same thing here
Same thing happened when I was on ARHD 1.2.0 in Netflix. See attachment.
I also get this screen problem. It is software/firmware corruption, and not a hardware fault as far as I can tell.
It happens at random in the stock browser, or at least appears random - I haven't found a link to any website or user action yet.
It does seem it might be related to anything involving animated menus with gradient colour or transparency - that's just a passing observation though.
Hi,
I've noticed an issue recently with my SGS3 (I747M). The flicker that I am referring to is not the more common hardware overlays issue, but rather only occurs, or is noticeable, on a white background. What happens is the screen will flicker colors; it's not that the entire screen will display one color and change to another and another rapidly, but rather it seems random pixels on the screen will flicker in waves...almost a 'shimmering' effect. So far, it seems to happen not immediately after reboot, but later on as I use my device. I was hoping this was a software issue, but so far it seems to be more likely a hardware issue.
From googling, I have found that this issue is not limited to myself (http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php/1772504-Samsung-Galaxy-S3-Praise-and-Problems), that being said, I couldn't find anyone else here on XDA that has this issue. Have any of you experienced it? and if so, what did you do? return under warranty perhaps?
Thanks in advance.

It might be a digitizer problem, digitizers are hard to replace but, I think zedomax has a way to change it.
Just go on galaxys3root.com-- this might help http://galaxys3root.com/galaxy-s3-root/how-to-replace-broken-lcd-screen-on-galaxy-s3/
thanks for the reply, but would a malfunctioning digitizer actually cause the screen to shimmer as it does? I would think it might be a digitizer problem if the screen wasn't recognizing my inputs properly, but I think this is a different issue which, to me, seems to be not related to the digitizer.
thanks though!
any other possible ideas/solutions?
I have had that issue. It would do the same thing and then lock up because I would try and hit the home button. The. It would do a full reboot. Weirdest thing I have ever had happen to a phone. I tried different than roms and stock and didn't do a dang thing. Returned it to att.

I suppose if it actually does get to that point where it renders the phone as unusable as in your case, I'll probably do the same...though since it's outside the 14 days I have with my provider (Rogers), I think I might have to go through with a warranty replacement through Samsung.
Thanks for the reply
update:
It seems it was either the ROM or Kernel that caused the issue (last few versions of task's AOKP). After flashing a different ROM (bacon version of Roger's JB), the issue seems to be resolved *knock on wood*.
Hi, just got an HTC One m8 2 weeks back.
I would like to know whether it's possible for me to schedule movie downloads to occur at midnight etc. I get peak and off peak data so trying to make use of the off peak data without having to stay up till 1am. I tried some apps, like IFTTT but no dice.
Anyone have any workaround?
Also, how do I know whether my camera is suffering from the scratched lens issue? I can't seem to tell.

Try a download manager app, such as Advanced Download Manager. I think ADM (and others) has this feature.

If you can't tell, you probably don't have an issue. Once the coating on the lens starts to get scratched (its just the coating coming off, not the glass being scratched), you can actually see the scratches if you look closely at the lens. But more importantly, your photos will start to look cloudy or hazy, a lot like a fingerprint smudge on the lens. And this will increase gradually as the issue gets worse.
Thanks for the response. I downloaded ADM and it works.
I can see some really fine scratches on the lens, almost like dots. However, no noticeable haze in the images.
One more issue. Do you also sometimes suffer from keyboard errors. Sometimes, occasionally I'll open a field to type and instead of the keyboard coming up, it's just a black bar. However, this black bar still reads my keyboard inputs. It's like a glitch in the OS.

If the coating is starting to scratch, it will probably get worse over time until it affects your photos. But no need to worry about it until that happens.

For a stock phone, you can try a factory reset or to update by OTA (if one is available). Not much else you can do on stock.
You can search around to see if this a common issue on your OS software version (and if there are any other possible fixes). But I don't think so. I've seen maybe one other person mention it, but it doesn't seem like a common problem.
I've been able to replicate this issue on my G4 (815T Australian model) on a daily basis, just on the instagram app though.
I recorded a video of it. Slowmo part shows the issue
https://goo.gl/photos/F823e125PQckCPLp6
The screen seems confused and it just scrolls the other way even if my thumb wasn't touching the screen.
Factory data reset did not fix anything.
Are you able to replicate this LG G4 owners?
I don't use Instagram, so can't help with that app, sorry.
But if you go into Developer Options, and turn on "Show touch data", it might help add some more info to the discussion. It will show a trace on the screen of what the phone's touchscreen interpreted from your last tap/swipe.
It would presumably show a swipe up, and then back down, when you're getting these ghost touches that change the scroll direction. But perhaps it could also help show if swipes are interpreted the same way in other apps. It might help you learn a little more about what the phone is seeing, at least.
Thanks for the video and everything but why a new thread? Plenty of videos on the main thread.
Is another thread really necessary?

Well this problem is only related to the LG G4 and IG for me...I don't have any other touchscreen problems with this phone. So for me I guess this is not hardware related. During the day I just had 2 small "ghost touches", way better than before. Will see how it goes the next few days...
Edit :
after a view days, it looks like it didn't solve this issue. Today I notice the ghost touches were there again in IG
Force GPU rendening under Developer options somewhat helped.
The new v10f on my Australian G4 didn't fix the issue as well.
Any updates on this? I had same issue. N this is a replacement unit after 2.5 weeks of waiting
Just day one and this ghost touch come up.
I also have this problem
Did you solve the problem?
I am facing similar issue.between...i am not using ig.
I've had this issue as well (not just IG) and sent the phone back for servicing. It was sent back to me with a report showing that they'd done a few things but the problem is still there. I'd been thinking I'd send it back in once more and ask them to have another look. I'm getting ghost touches everywhere and quite a bit, it's very annoying.
Someone mentioned there was another, large thread about this issue but I can't seem to find it, can anyone point me to it?
Hi, I posted this in a new thread yesterday as I couldn't find anything. Never thought to search for 'ghost taps' duh.
Every now and then when just doing normal things on the my phone it totally freaks out and all by it self it suddenly starts to tap random parts of the desktop, slides the pages, opens apps, closes apps, goes into calculator and a bunch of buttons are pressed randomly. It's almost like someone has hacked my phone and is trolling me by just tapping randomly on the phone.
Just today when looking at Facebook it closed the app, scrolled down notifications, data was turned off and wifi turned on.
I thought it might have been my screeen protector, bit of moisture in it or something. Took that off and still does it. Took out the battery for a minute and still does it.
It happened a few months ago then nothing for ages and now it's started again this weekend.
Thought it might have been only when connected to data but has now done it when offline.
Any one got a solution? Does a custom rom fix?
