I currently only have a Netbook running JoliOS available and was wondering if anyone used a similar (or other Linux) configuration to root, backup, unlock and flash ROMs for his Nexus. All without Windows.
Especially the driver issue, how did you get them to have the PC OS recognizing your phone properly?
Any tips are welcome, thanks! ;-)

I only use linux.. just make sure you have latest version of android sdk installed, fastboot, and udev rules configured. Done.

Truth is only supported linux flavour by aosp is ubuntu 11.x, but obviously unix and other linux distros are configurable for building aosp/adb/fastboot/mtp with little to no effort from the user.
Like I said, I'm using JoliOS, which is basically an Ubuntu-based distro for Netbooks. Uses even the same and additional repositories.
I'm a very mobile travel writer, so having no desktop PC, just a 3 year-old Acer Aspire One Netbook for saving my stuff online in case of loss, theft, damage. Tried full Ubuntu before on it, but makes it too slow.
My main concern are the Nexus drivers, did you install anything specific? Maybe even have a source or link?
Fastboot, SDK etc. shouldn't be a problem for me to install. Thanks!

Oh yeah, my plan is to do it that way for starters (currently I'm on stock 4.0.2 yakjuxw):
- root
- install/perform titanium backup and SMS backup
- copy backup files to computer hd
- unlock bootloader
- install cwm
- flash stock 4.0.4 yakju
- restore backups
Do you see any problems along those procedures, that might occur coz I don't use windows? Thanks! ;-)

I use adb and fastboot from my CR-48 (Chrome OS), no drivers, no problems...
You should be able to do most thing from there...
This method (root 4.0.2 via exploit) worked like a charm. Currently backing up everything to Dropbox via Titanium. Now I just have to decide what ROM to shoot for or simply going 4.0.4 stock. Thanks for the thumbs up guys, was really easier than expected!

Hi
recently, i decided it was time to wipe my computer clean and do a fresh install (you know, its like flashing roms, sometimes fresh is better) so i reinstall win 7 ultimate x64 and for the life of me, i cannot get adb to recognize my g2 with cm7 rc1... ive searched through several threads on installing the proper drivers, installed the most recent version of htc sync, latest android sdk, and nothing... its not such a big deal, but i would like to flash to the final of cm 7, but i dont like a lot of the fluff in cm7 (adw, etc) and find it easier to remove and change things around through adb.
thanks in advance
Did you use the installer to install the android sdk? I had issues as well with that one. Removed it and just extracted the .zip package, after that it worked fine.
This REALLY is a tricky one. In the past I've had luck installing both the HTC sync software, and PDANet. Between those two all the drivers seem to work for me in Win 7 64bit.
Why not just use a file manager like 7zip to remove/add the things you want prior to flashing. Or do you just like doing things the hard way?

Unless it's specifically a problem with Ultimate, there's no reason it won't work. I run Win 7 Home Premium x64 at home and the steps I said work for me.
I run 7 ultimate 64bit and adb works fine for me.
I used the pdanet drivers.
Flash with rom manager and then install zip from card..the adwmod zip that is..take it out for you

I have to agree with everyone else on this. I'm running Windoze 7 X64 and adb works just fine. I also have Ubuntu 10.10 64bit and Sabayon 64bit on my HDD (yay multiboot!) and neither of them have issues either.

i use winrar to change files around before i flash it, but lately ive been having problems with the edited rom (i.e. install fails, boot looping even after a data/cache wipe, etc) i just wanted to try a different route this go around
You could try another usb cord, and make sure everything is installed under admin, and the way I got my drivers I edit the driver file and added the info for G2 (saw it in tmobile forum) and also I have no problem with win 7 x64 aswell... and I agree I don't like all the extra puff and bluff oin cm7
well, i havent been able to get a wired adb to connect, but i have gotten it to work with wirelessadb and i am now rockin a modified cm 7 final
I've successfully permanently rooted my Sprint Intercept with the latest 2.2 froyo on it without installing custom kernels and wanted to share steps I took since there is some confusion and differences.
Original guide link.
Things you'll need:
Root files.
Samsung drivers.
Windows 7/vista/xp 32 bit.
Steps:
Install Samsung drivers
Reboot your PC
Reboot your phone, connect it to your PC with a usb cable
Put your phone in debugging mode (menu->settings->applications->development)
Extract root files to your c:\intercept-root folder (or any folder you wish)
Start windows command line (start->run->CMD)
Change to your "intercept-root" folder
Execute START_ROOT command
Follow instructions
Once done, don't forget to install Superuser apk.
after you rooted it you were able to put a different rom on it right. trying to clear out the garbage that comes on it.

No, this is just simply to root and remove stuff you don't want. I suggest Titanium backup. There is no proper recovery for the intercept that I know of. The one existing can be flashed and it does work but has some issues with what it backs up and what it restores. It's not complete and may create problems.
If you are rooting the latest 2.2 froyo, after removing all sprint apps you are left with true bare stock so there is really no need for anything else. Make sure you don't remove the sprint vm even if you are using google voice. It needs to be on because of system integration.
you mae one error. the drivers can't be installed on windows 7. I have gotten the drivers from the moment to work once but now its nothing. my computer no longer recognizes the phone when i plug it into the computer. which means that i cant root it or anything. sucks and i need serious help.
hmmm, same problem
Find a friend with a XP laptop and use that?
Glad to know - i have failed at rooting my intercept a few times and have been using my windows 7 box. Trying these instructions from a laptop - will report back!
Success
Using nothing but a old crappy dell laptop runing windows XP I was able to gain perma root using the instructions provided here. On my first run of the script the process failed, I simply did what the program told me to (run the script again) and it worked like a charm.
OP - thank you so very much for taking the time to post.
Question for anyone: now that I have root, I *really* want to be able to use my Intercept as a wi-fi hotspot. Can I do this? Where do I start?
No errors. I got drivers under Windows 7 working but I clearly said it has to be 32 bit as 64 does not work. Check your version.

Download wireless tether app. I've had troubles with it in the past so if that one doesn't work try Barnacle.
how to flash cmo1 custom recovery after phone is rooted?
Just throw intercept root on sdcard and run
All I had to do it throw the root on the sdcard. Run it from the file manager, and then download barnacle. Sweet! Done!

I don't believe there is a supported recovery for the intercept. There is one hacked up but there are some issues with it so I don't recommend it.

Hey Guys,
New to the forum here and quite a noob on Android Systems. The GNex is my 1st smart phone and I've had it for 6 months now.
Wanting to root, unlock, and flash the new JB rom onto my phone and is using the ToolKit for the process.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The original problem is now immaterial, what is bothering me now is installing drivers.....I cannot seem to find a way to properly install the proper drivers for my galaxy nexus. All my laptop would do is install the stock drivers upon connecting the phone to the laptop.
It doesn't matter what drivers im trying to install the condition is the same. I've so far tried out two ways, 1st is following the step by step instruction from efrant, 2nd is installing using the Galaxy Nexus ToolKit v7.0.
For a android noob like me I really have no idea what is going on here @@"
oh and what role does "USB debugging" play in installing drivers? when should it be ticked and when should it not???
----------------------------------------------------------------- below is my original question posted --------------------------------------
However during the 1st step where I need to select my firmware build, I realised the IMM76k build is listed under CDMA where my GNex has this build but is a GSM model.
How should I proceed?? Choose a similar build under GSM or choose the correct build but under CDMA instead??
thanks guys
I would root, unlock, and flash recovery via adb so incase something doesn't work you'll know what happened. Also if you want to use the toolkit just select the correct version under gsm and install the drivers. It should work
I personally would not use a toolkit, as you learn nothing by going that route.
If you want to do it yourself, look at the "flash" link in my signature.

actually I was going to do it your way by following through all the steps you have listed out. Like you have said somewhere its like learning math 1st before using a calculator.
However I found myself stuck at the very first part.....installing drivers....
Before yesterday I have not tried to install any driver myself. I guess the only driver that was ever installed to my PC is the one that automatically runs when you plug your phone into a computer for the first time.
When I was following your steps, I first went into device manager --> galaxy nexus --> details --> uninstall driver
and then I have no idea how to install the drivers that I have DL from following your steps. I remember in the instructions you said to plug in my GNex and I should be able to direct the PC to install whatever driver I want, but instead the PC just automatically installed the original drivers again...
So today I decided to give the toolkit a go. As you have seen the 1st problem I ran into was the mixed up variants.....(what does "build code" stand for anyways??)
And the second problem im having now is, again.....it wouldn't install the universal driver. Or at least it does not seem to have installed....
Well, now that I've got your attention D) I would like to follow your steps again if I can get pass the driver issue....I like the JB rom you have uploaded better anyways~~ fan of original stuff from Google!
thanks!!!
Just to mention, my purpose of doing all this is to get to JB faster, and maybe learn more about my device on the way.
My GNex is a GSM model, yakjuzs, build code is IMM76k (this is the odd part) if these information would help solving my problem.
I normally prefer stock google released ROMs.
@CloakedUltraling, installing the drivers is the only tricky part. You need to get to the point where you see something like "Android 1.0" in your device manager with a yellow exclamation point.
To get to that point, right click on anything you see related to Samsung or Android in device manager and click uninstall. Then go to View in the menu at the top and select show hidden devices, and uninstall anything related to Samsung or Android. Then reboot your PC, and once booted, plug your device (while it is booted into the bootloader) to your PC.
Now, you should see something like "Android 1.0". Right-click on that and select update driver, then follow the menu to manually install it, and navigate to the directory where you unzipped 1wayjonny's driver. This needs to be done TWICE: once when your device is booted into the bootloader, and once when it is booted normally.
i was doing some reading since I've missed out the backup step....lol
and I realised that having ADB installed seems to be a pre-requisite for pretty much everything...and which I have not done.
Is this the case for removing/installing drivers as well? ie, do I need ADB installed before doing all this??
OHHHH and Android SDK as well....this looks REALLY important but I have not had any knowledge of this either. Guess I should start from the Android SDK first??

SDK is not required for you (unless you are developing... )
Drivers need to be installed before you can use adb and fastboot - one for each.

DriveDroid allows you to boot your PC from ISO/IMG files stored on your phone. This is ideal for trying Linux distributions or always having a rescue-system on the go... without the need to burn different CDs or USB pendrives. The paid version of DriveDroid does not include ads and helps the developer.
DriveDroid also includes a convenient download menu where you can download USB-images of a number of operating systems from your phone.
You can also create USB-images which allows you to have a blank USB-drive where you can store files in. Another possibility is to use tools on your PC to make a bootable USB-drive out of the blank image that DriveDroid created.

I have a nexus 4 running CM10.1 with Franco Kernel, put DriveDroid on it a few weeks back and have had no issues running SliTaz, Ubuntu, and BSD off it.
I've used it several times with great success. Actually, no problems to speak of. I've loaded up PartedMagic and MintLinux.
FYI - I'm running AOKP (official) + Franco. Once you load up the app, make sure to follow the on-screen instructions that say to set the storage option as USB Mass Storage (selectable from within DriveDroid).

It should allow you to use the Windows 7 installer from your phone. For a live version of Windows from your phone I'd recommend using Hiren's mini-XP, which you can install as follows: http://softwarebakery.com/install-hirensbootcd-on-drivedroid
I'm still in the works of trying to install Windows 8 on DriveDroid as a live OS (so that it runs from the USB stick, instead of just installing)

All USB-related problems are usually depending on the kernel. There are *MANY* floating around and I can't check the code of them all to be sure they'll work.
Therefore, could you also try the Franco Kernel, like sphyyr did? If you can confirm that'll work for you, I have finally some indication of what the problem is. I've recently received more issues with the Nexus 4 then I've noticed before, so it might also be an update that messed things up... totally not sure though.

As for the Galaxy S3, there are two devices specifically that I know do not work with their usual kernel: Sprint and AT&T. I'm still working on getting the right patches into a custom kernel, so that I can recommend that kernel to people. This is an error in the Sprint/AT&T kernel that makes the device acts as a CD-rom device (without the necessary fixes to be able to boot from it) without allowing applications to change that mode back to USB-drive.

Hiya everyone. So; Normally I do my rooting and whatnot on my windoze XP Hard drive, using ODIN. However; for some reason my Windoze is suddenly having some issues with USB (I'm working on resolving it; not why I'm posting.) so I'm left with my Linux HDD (Oh noes! Like I'm really complaining I can't use windoze...lol...). However that being said, I have no idea how to go about doing this on Linux. I run OpenSUSE 12.3 32bit.
I'm not a Linux Poweruser, still learning, but I'm not entirely useless with it either; I know how to do basic program compiling (./configure, make, make install, etc); Am somewhat comfortable in Terminal / CLI, and have a live USB handy incase it breaks
I have done a bit of research and know that Heimdall is the way to go with Linux, however I've also read that Heimdall is not compatible with the T-Mobile S2? Does Kodoo fall into that incompatibility as well, since they can flash the same ROM's?
If it IS possible to root the Kodoo Galaxy s2x t-989D using Linux; can someone either point me to a detailed link explanation of the process, or post here and walk me through this? Assume I know nothing; to save questions. I'd rather have too much information and do it with ease than have not enough and have my woman castrate me for bricking her Phone, and then have to give her my S3 ;p
Thanks! :good:

OK your going to need the program heimdall, and heimdall frontend, I assume u know ur way around a CLI if I've been using Linux so what ur going to need to do is flash the recovery, put phone in download mode, connect to PC, DL twrp2.6.0.4 img file and extract it to ur working folder, open heimdall and run command heimdall-flash -recovery recovery.img cache.img, that'll flash the recovery to the phone, from there its just booting into recovery and flashing a ROM(if u want a custom ROM) or rebooting system from recovery, it will ask if u want to install superuser access, tap install and ur good.. Hope that helps
