[VIDEO] One X Screen Issues [VIDEO] - HTC One X

Hi XDA,
Apologies for the title, however wanted to gain attention to a recent video that I have recorded and placed on YouTube. I've been experiencing major banding issues, worse than I can find any videos of on YouTube, just wanted to see if it's software related or not, anyway please check out my video!
Thanks.

Thanks, did do a quick search but couldn't find it. Am I right in saying that an OTA should fix all this?

do this and let me know.
disable fast boot ---> in settings - power - fastboot
enable animations -- display
disable htc 3 fingers
that made the trick for me.

Followed these instructions, still does the exact same thing with the status bar and youTube

How to reproduce the screen corruption
Ok, this is just odd, but is 100% reproducible on my One X.
Start by killing all tasks in Task Manager (or ideally, a fresh reboot).
Open the camera - all should be well.
Tap home, and then bring down the notification bar.
Drag the bar back up slowly, and hover when you line up with the status bar - the corruption should appear in the top left. Repeat this until you get corruption.
Now open the camera app - corruption down the edge just like the YouTube Video.
Want it to go away? Use Settings/Apps/Running and find FM Radio. Kill it. If you can't see it, be sure to check the cached processes (via the menu). Make sure FM Radio is not loaded.
Now open the camera again. Corruption is gone.
Can everyone with v1.26 reproduce this?

Yeah, it did worked. But I didn't managed to find FM Radio though(checked cached processes but none).
Alternative(which other users may want to try to reproduce):
I managed to get the glitch by loading a pic and keep resizing it and tilt it until the bug occurs.
My speculation is that if there's a lot of image processing(graphic intensive) to be done then it'll happen(which makes me believe that it is a software bug).
EDIT: I tried to kill Sense UI and the corruption is gone. Will try to reproduce it again tomorrow as its hell late now
p/s: these are just speculations, it may not be true as I am not an expert.

How to reproduce the screen corruption
I've used my One X for about a week now, and NEVER ever had the green noise/lines issue before.
The ONLY way to trigger it (so far) is to do the method described below.
After simply turn off the screen for 20 seconds the problem is solved and everything is running as normal
Even with Fast boot permanently turned on.
The way to trigger the this green noise/lines problem is to quickly tap a few times very fast on the notification bar. (the transparent one on the home screen, becomming black every time you touch it)
(Instead of sliding it down and 'waiting' for it to happen, or not... just press te bar 5 times very fast, and the problem occurs EVERY time..
When opening the Camera app after that, the green noise/lines on the side appear.
To get out of the 'green noise/lines mode' simply turn off the screen for 20 seconds, and the problem should be gone
After this you can normally take photo's and watch Youtube movies without encountering the problem.
Can someone with 1.26 confirm this? or even better, someone with 1.28 say this is fixxed?
*I know the 1.28 will fix the glitch triggered by the 'slide down' way but also the 'quick press' method described by me?

I just did a factory reset (from power on vol down boot screen). So far, the screen corruption is gone (pulling the notification bar down doesn't trigger it, and I can't find any other way to trigger it).
Has anyone else tried this?

After i configured my One X for the first time, i discoverd that by clicking on 'make a backup of my phone' also meant that he installed all the apps i installed on my old phone (Desire)
So i did a factory reset to get rid of the apps.
About 1 week later i read about the screen corruption, and was able to create it as described above (pressing very fast on the status bar)
pulling down wasn't triggering it in my case..
Since yesterday i've installed the 1.28 update, and i can confirm that the corruption is totally gone

One more here, guys!
I have the same problem and I found it this morning. When I drag the status bar it happens, but not every time. I'm with 1.26 version and I made factory reset when I took it.
I hope this is only software bug, because I have my phone from only 3 days.
You think that if I let the update it will be all fine???

I'm with 1.28 i just saw what the guy did in the video, tried it myself and the first 3-4 times the screen on the top left corner was doing the same as in the video posted in the first post, than it disappeared.

I had exactly the same issue from day 1, although it was a bit rarer to happen
Flashed a 1.28 custom ROM and the issue is completely gone

I also think that this is software problem. When I still had HD2 and developers started to work on Sense 3.5 first couple of monts that was one of the big problems.
Now I'm with 1.28 version and the problem still exist. I wrote to HTC support about this and now I'm waiting.
If they send me some dumb excuse I will root my phone and put a custom rom.
...
Is there anyone who has returned the phone because of this?

Can't lock phone / put in standby (solved!)

Hello all,
My phone is not working properly. I've had some bugs most people seem to be having, but now I have something which is quite annoying. I can't find it on these forums or anywhere on the internet.
I have seen a 1 line reference to my problem here:
/showthread.php?t=666332&highlight=standby
Flaws & annoyances with the HTC Desire (with workarounds!) [updated Apr 23, 2010
Hardware defects. Eg. Dust under screen, device not going into standby properly. Most of us don't experience these. Contact your retailer to exchange the unit or HTC to claim warranty.
So, I seem to have this problem. The phone wakes up with whatever button I press, and I don't have to unlock the phone. I have a unlock pattern set. It also doesn't ask me for this.
I couldn't find a proper topic about this problem, but I assume I'm not the only one. Is there a fix, or is it a hardware problem?
It wouldn't make sense to me if it's a hardware problem since the screen does turn off when I press the 'power' button.
Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks, Bart.
Which Lock?
are you using the built in lock or a third party lock app? I had the same problem when I used LockBot. If it's the standard lock, have you tried Powering the phone off then back on?
I am just using the built in application. I haven't used any other lock app.
I have tried turning the phone off twice, and both times it came back (might have been after charging it, but I don't know at all if that's the reason).
edit: I'm gonna try to recreate the problem with restarting and trying to find out when it stops working properly.
edit2: I restarted now... and it hadn't saved the new background I set... strange... :/
edit3: Ok, it still locks itself... I guess I'll just need to wait and see when it doesn't work anymore... maybe it's just a matter of time for it to stop working...
The problem that you quote in your opening post is probably the problem concerning the Desire (or rather an application running on the Desire) not properly releasing a wake lock which causes severe battery drain, e.g. the calendar app about which another thread exists.
Your problem seems to be quite strange. You do not happen to have an application called 'No lock' installed, right?
No, I don't have 'No lock' installed.
I use 2 calander widgets though... (the little one on my home screen, and an more advanced one on another screen.)
I've got quite some applications installed though... I'll just type them here, maybe someone can see something wrong...

Lets hope it wont brake again... but that's probably too optimistic.
First off: sorry for the double post, but I have some new information which will also mean the end of this topic.
This morning it didn't work anymore, and the only application that did it's thing this night was the kaloer clock (night clock).
I looked at the settings, and there are some settings about screen lock.
It's not clear at all, but I changed some settings, and it locks again.
So, I guess it was just me using an app which I didn't fully understand. I'm glad you guys helped me though. And I'm definitely glad that my problem is solved!

Google Nav crashing with flashing white/black screen

got an issue with the google nav app crashing on me.
a little background first though.
had this issue on the std rom, and tried flashing the current ARHD 31.3 rom in the hope of fixing it, it hasnt!
from a fresh boot, i can go into the google maps app, choose a location and then use the nav app go to there, no issues at all.
next time, i open maps, no issues at all, choose my location, and as soon as i hit start navigation, the nav screen opens, showing the next turn to make at the top, the voice is telling me where to go, but the main map screen, is flashing black and white.
it flashes like that for 5 or 10 seconds before crashing, the only way to restore navigation to a working state is to reboot the phone.
its getting rather annoying now, as i dont use the nav very often, i tend to need it occasionally, and its irritating to have to reboot the phone just to get the nav working.
as far as i am aware, the GPS works fine in everything else, (Maps, strava, gps test) it just seems to be nav thats causing the issue.
i've already tried clearing the cache from settings, apps, clear data, but i still get the same issue
any ideas on what might be causing this
cheers

Had this too on CM, thought it had something to do with the ROM but after reverting to stock exactly the same issue. You're not alone

Any update on this issue? I have exactly same issue on stocked One X with Sense 5.0, Android 4.2.2.
I have exactly the same problem. I'm wondering if it's a Sense or app issue. Either way, I submitted a bug report.
Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk
I turned off the hardware overlay in the Developer section, and it seems no problem anymore... Not thoughtfully tested yet, tho...
Still flashing and crashing HTC One X+
Google maps to navigation is still flashing and crashing - even after turning off hardware overlays.
Works 1st time after reboot. If I swipe the app away from recent apps screen, then it starts failing.
3rd time I start it, working again, but I figure it's going to happen again.

I think I've found a kind of workaround to prevent this problem.
When you search the location you want to reach, and you are faced to the tile with these info:
8 min (3,1 km)
some info about trip
[MAP]
Start navigation
Instead of click on "Start navigation", click on "8 min (3,1 km)", then when the map is open, click on "Departure" and maps should not crash.
I hope the explanation is enough clear, I've translated texts from the italian app so I'm not sure if I've did it in the right way.

HTC One X
Cyanogen 10.2.1
I was so annoyed with this...
I have had this problem for the last year using the stock, rooted AT&T Rom for my HTC One X + My wifes phone that is an HTC One X does not seem to do this. I found when I removed the maps update it worked well. When it updated it seemed to work a few times then the flickering and crashing started up again.
I tried the other suggestion above.
Finally I noted that when I clicked on start nav and as soon as it tried to open the map if I hit the power button and waited a second and turned it back on the image was stable. Sometimes I couldn't catch it before it crashed but if I did it would do the trick.
Why doesn't google fix this?
Same here. One X with rooted stock ROM.
When the flickering starts, i turn off the screen and then back on. This works for me in most situations. Still really annoying.

Random top row of the screen not working! Grrr

Okay this has bugged the heck out of me for ages, maybe someone knows the answer to it.
The top notification bar (and sometimes the row underneath in certain apps) sometimes is completely unpressable, as if it's being blocked. I should note this happens on my Note 7, but has also occurred on my Note 3, my old S2 and even the S7. Which makes me think it must be a setting I choose, or an app I install.
Sometimes, I'll turn on my phone, go past the lock screen and I won't be able to drag the notification bar down. I found a workaround (which has worked on all my old phones).
- Turn the phone off
- Turn it back on
- On the lock screen try to drag the notification bar down (which doesn't do anything)
- Unlock the phone
- Then it works again!!
My mrs had this too, and my workaround fixed it.
This issue has spanned over multiple versions of Android and is now doing my head in.
Any ideas?
Some app overlay is on top of it such as: Flux, blue light filter, and things like that. Once disable the issue is gone. That might be your issue.

I would place a 90% bet on this being a carried over app problem. Have you tried a fresh reset and reproduced the problem?
Have you also tried the service test for Touch ans S Pen? *#0*#

I think so too. One example I have an issue with is the offscreen memo function. I pull the stylus out and can write on the screen off, but the row of buttons along the top NEVER work! But, I should say on a hard reset it was fine until all the apps were installed and logged into, or a setting was put in place. The service test for S Pen and Touch works perfectly. All I can think is trying to install 1 app at a time, and seeing what happens as a result. Will be painful with 100+ apps though. I'm about to replace my N7 on the recall too so I want to hold off on a hard reset too.
I feel your pain, if it were me I would rather discover the erroneous app now than later. Perhaps a backup via smartswitch on PC (very fast over USB 3) and when you know which app restore the backup and delete the app accordingly?

By pure luck. I found it. 3 years of pain and I nailed the bugger! Something you said triggered a thought process.
It was....
Cerberus security! An app that automatically hides itself from the draw once it's installed so usually never crossed my mind.
Disabling the "Block Status bar" feature in Cerberus fixed it.
PHEW!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks for this (both of you).
good for you!

Notification bar pull down stutter after unlocking phone

I searched forum for similiar issues but could not found anything(though there are some reddit topics).
When I wake the phone with power button or fingerprint sensor, and try to pull down notification bar, there is a stutter/lag lasts 1-2 seconds. Lets say you pull up for app drawer there is nothing but pull down and there it is.
Also wallpaper seems to affect it a little bit but it might be a placebo effect as it still stutters(light the way wallpaper seems to solve it a little bit.).
It started after Android 10 update and I even tried to clean flashing whole rom but result is same and I do not have any UI altering apps.
It seems like a slow wake up issue and may be playing with sleep frequencies might solve it but I did not root so it is not a option for me.
Is anyone else facing this ? Vanilla or custom roms/kernels ?
Yep, I have the same issue. It's pretty annoying, but I did get it to stop, for me at least it seems the new gesture navigation is causing this because I can't get it to stutter while using the 2 or 3 button navigation methods. I've had this happening since I updated to Android 10 (stable release, not beta) but after a while it just fixed itself, unfortunately my phone ran out of battery yesterday and today after I booted it up it came back to haunt me :/
Alright I got it to stop, disabling both "New notification" and "Double-tap to check phone" did it for me. Hopefully this helps.

I have exactly the same issue on my Pixel 2XL, manage to fix it by disabling Google Feed on the left of the main home screen. Try it let me know if it works.
Update 1: disabling google feed doesn't work. I try to switch back to 3 button navigation and the issue gone.
I do not know how but now it is smooth everytime I try to wake phone and double tap+alwayson display is enabled. Also I tried all wallpapers and it works without any stutter.
Probably monthly updates fixed it, idk.

Green tint only on unlocking device - acceptable?

I bought this used s9 for quite affordable price. Everything looked fine during testing except a greenish shade which happens only when unlocked and happens for like a second.
On searching internet, i found threads, yt videos by a number of people, almost all claiming that it is an update consequence. My questions are
1. Is it a software issue? If yes, can I expect some wayto solve - official ota or root and custom or old rom (if possible at all)?
2. If not software issue, is it a software induced hardware issue? Any way to repair without paying full for display?
2.1 If i get it replaced somehow, will itcome back again?
3. In any case, if I don't get it repaired, how long can I expect the deviceto be functional; ie before this green shade becomes permanent instead of being intermittent making device unusable?
Thank you
If it only happens for a second the only thing I be concerned about by the possibility of a rootkit or virus.
If running on Android 9 or higher and you did a factory reset already, that should have killed any unwanted critters.
Do a display check with ScreenTest. If it passes it should be good to go and just a transient glitch.
You've heard of The Matrix, right?

Hahah
This is something different. I asked a reseller and he said that such displays may last anywhere from 1 hour to 1 year.
Internet is filled with such questions.
Can you please help answering other questions if not this one, like if downgrading to older android possible or not?
The green only lasts for a second or so when opening the lock screen?
Never any other time?
Then it's not hardware.
AMOLED displays can last for many years. ScreenTest gives you a good idea of it's condition. Generally failure is gradual with the blue pixels failing first, red last.
The boot loader version dictates if you can downgrade or not.

So far, only immediately after unlocking. Haven't used much tho.
People say temp fix to all such issues is to Enable Always On display and double tap to wake screen instead of using Power button.
Can you ease tell which ScreenTest app it is? Playstore shows several with similar names.

Like I said if it's transient it's no issue.
This is the one I use:
Hi.
My s9 has this problem which everything turns green or worst, depending on the brightness level.
I can repeat the bug 100% of the time: just use the power button to turn off the phone two times: one to put into black screen and again to turn on. Then the screen misses some horizontal lines and is all buggy.
I shall record a video to share my problem but again, this can only be avoided by using aways on display to turn on the phone and then all goes back to normal.

Try clearing the system cache.
A hard reboot.
Try in safe mode.
A factory reset may help but if that fails try flashing to the same version. If Android 8 or lower it could be caused by a rootkit that a factory reset won't purged. However this isn't a typical symptom nonetheless the firmware maybe corrupted.
If none of the above works it's a hardware failure, likely the display.
