[Q] Root DHD with 3.12.405.1 - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I want to root my DHD, this are the specs:
Android: 2.3.5
Software number: 3.12.405.1
Sense: 3.0
Buildnumber: 3.12.405.1 CL199157
Kernel: 2.6.35.10-g931a37e
Is it possible to root my phone, without downgrading and losing data?
Thanks,
LTKort

Have you tried this:

No, but is it with Hboot? Because that will delete all of my data, or not?

I don't think its possible to root it without downgrading that will result in you loosing your data.
You can root without downgrading, but that will only be a very temporary root that will be gone after you reboot your phone.
You can backup the data you need maybe?

Ok thanks,
Can you tell me how to backup everything, and then how to Root my device?
Thanks

For data and applications & media, I use MyBackup Pro (free version also available for 30-days trial). That saves a folder on your SD-card called "backups" with everything u backed up. It works perfect!
For SMS I use an application called SMS Backup + (market link) that syncs up to your gmail account.
For contacts and so on, I just sync with my google gmail account also (you will find this in settings -> sync.
So how to root:
Just follow this guide (same as I posted in my first post), BUT you don't need to download custom ROM if you don't want it.
AND stop at the point where installing custom ROM begins in the guide.
Then you should have root

After use of AAHK to downgrade go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1382235 and download fully rooted original ROM and put it on SD card. Install 4EXT to clear cash and date and install this ROM.
You will have fully rooted DHD.
PS copy all your data/contacts befor starting.

Regne onHotal
U realy dont need to downgrade as I did it a few hours ago using latest official update I have (3.12.405.1).
What i did is this:
1. use AAHK and just go to menu "o" then select 5 - Install AAHK 'ENG' Hboot for Devices running GB Sense 3
2. use Supertoolv3 and select 1 - Prep (using zergRush CREDITS to Revolutionary)
after if cracks open the tool will exit
3. use Supertoolve again and select 3 - Attempt Perm Root (Must prep first)
4. use AMT_1.8.5_Release to push a recovery of ur choice
U're done.
I'm not responsible if u brick ur phone. I just tried and worked for me.

I managed to root my DHD on that version with superoneclick, BUT I was already S-OFF so I don't know if that was why it worked.

You can remove them using adb or if you have "s-off" you can just delete the .apk's

Using adb ??? do i need root to do so ? also i have s-on and i am affraid to brick my new phone.
You have to root to remove preinstalled apps.

Ok thanks for the info....but what is adb ?
Edit: Found it i think http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=502010
Another question (sorry). If i use a custom rom (need to root first and do s-off) and don't want to use it anymore....can i flash back to stock rom ? also if i do that i lose my root and s-off right ? so i need to re-do that.
Also i am from Europe (as you see in my profile) what version from this topic do i need ? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695667
My device is NOT branded and simlock free. So i am guessing i need the WWE ?
PS: If i root with unrevoked, do i get backup tool ?

You don't need s-off to remove htc apps, just root. Only if you want to remove from a running system.
If you revert to stock you lose root, s-off and you get htc apps back.
You can use any gsm rom, only orange uk users need to be wary about the radio they flash i think (correct me if i'm wrong).
You cannot backup until after root, but then any recovery offers nandroid backup, and titanium backup offers apps and settings backup on any rooted rom.

Those backups nandroid/titanium .... i need to pay/download them manually or are they included after rooting with unrevoked3 ? i have readed somewhere unrevoked added a recovery too.
Also after root i don't get future updates from HTC right ??? People said if they use S-Off and get a update from HTC they might change the HBoot and lose S-Off again......i wonder how that is possible if they can't get updates after root.
Sorry for all those questions, this is my first Android/Linux device and i am new with this.

No problems in asking questions this is the reason that XDA exsist
Nandroid backup: download Rom manager from market (free) and install clockworkmod recovery from within the app, reboot into recovery and do a FREE nandroid backup.
*edit you could also skip the Rom manager and just use the unrevoked recovery, it's up to you
Titanium: free version has restrictions, not sure what because I don't use it.
BTW you will basically update from XDA after using a custom Rom, the developers usually update their custom roms after an official update.
hope this helps

[Q] Upgrade to 2.36.405.8 without losing apps & data

I want to flash only kernel, system and radio from the latest WWE 2.36.405.8, without losing data and applications installed: i know that's possibile but i don't know exactly how to do it.

What i need to do:
- Install rom manager then clockworkmod
- Flash only some parts of the WWE with cwm
- Flash the radio
Can someone please explain me how to do it? I'm new to the android world
Some questions:

welcome to xda-developers forum.
sorry for my poor English.
flashing kernel and radio wont lose your data.you can flash them in boot-loader with ADB.
but system you may lose it.
I don't know in this case but changing ROM would lose your data.
you can keep your programs with titanium back up.
your contacts get back up via Google account or export to memory.
other data I don't know.
for install CWM you need to be Eng-off.
and for second question again I don't know.
good luck

This is a lot of effort just to avoid losing apps and data. all of which is backed up with a combination of Google servers (if you ticked that option) and taking advantage of two great apps mentioned above (others include MyBackup Pro and Sprite).

If you want to flash radio's you will need them.
You're already rooted and as long as you don't flash a stock RUU it will remain rooted so not an issue.

[Q] Which route to take

I have just received my DHD this afternoon and was wondering if I should try and root the phone.
I am currently on:
Firmware - 2.2.1
Kernal - 2.6
Software - 1.84
Browser - webkit 3.1
I want to up date it to (Gingerbread) - 2.3 but I am not sure if I should 1st download the update and then root - or to root 1st and update later?
If anyone could help guide me with which root is best and possibly why that would be great.
If possible - I am looking for the easiest rooting process (newbie) and possibly with better battery life and hopefully sense 3.0.
1) Downgrade to 1.32
2) Root, Eng S-OFF, Radio S-OFF
3) Flash ClockworkMod Recovery
4) Flash Seraphic's Rooted Gingerbread
That way you can go back and forth between ROMs if you want, or just have Gingerbread.
^^^
Is it possible you could elaborate on the above instructions as I am very new to this and I am a little worried about bricking the phone.
Do you have any links to particular threads that I can follow or perhaps even video tutorials for them?
I have come across these 2 threads - are these the correct 1's: ?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=857537
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=857537
Thanks.
Sorry I meant to come back and link the steps.
I'm out at the moment, so unable to for it now.
For step one you need the downgrade thread in the development section, step two you need visionary+, one click ENG S-OFF tool and the one click radio S-OFF tool.
I have just come across these threads in the Development Section of Desire HD:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=964996
and
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905003
is there a particular 1 I should follow for step 1?
1) Downgrade to 1.32
Personally I'd do it manually following the guide here

Do you possibly know of a video tutorial of the above link instead?
its just that I would feel more comfortable following video instructions because I'm worried that this £250+ device may become bricked
(off topic a little ..... can bricked DHD's be restored) ??
Read the guides few times and I'm sure you will understand.

If... for now, I do the OTA update on my phone to 2.3 (Gingerbread) - will I still be able to downgrade and root at a later date?
... perhaps in about a months time.
No, don't apply the update. You don't know whether it will be 2.36, 2.37 or 2.42.
As it stands only 2.42 cannot be rooted & downgraded yet.

Ok, I have done 1,2 and 3 and am now downloading number 4 to desktop.
( seraphic_gb_rooted_0-1.zip ) -
but how do I put it (or flash it) on to my phone?
Is it best to do it through ROM manager?
Code:
[B]New phone details[/B]
Android Version

12.28b.60.140eU
Kernel
2.6.32.21
Build Number

Software number
1.32.405.6
Browser
WebKit 3.1
I made a stock rooted HTC 2.50.405.2 ROM, the latest available.
Download that instead, copy to your SD card, and flash in ClockworkMod Recovery. Make sure you wipe everything first. i.e /system /data /cache.
Will flashing clear everything of my sim card and/or memory card?
No, but there is the option to wipe /sdcard, make sure you don't select that.
are these the options in the clockwork mod recovery you mean?
.... can I just ignore them and go straight to the install because when I go to select the downloaded rom on ROM manager it already gives me the options to :
> Backup existing ROM (although mine is stock at the moment)
> Wipe data and Cache
> Wipe Dalvik Cache (which is pre selected)

[Q] Rooting wildfire and still keeping android2.2 with sense ?

Hey ,
I wanted to know if there is a way i can root my wildfire
And still keep all my apps and not remove the stock froyo?
Thanks in advance
P.S - i dont want to install cyanogenmod cause il loose all my apps
Thank you
Yes you can. The process of getting root / S-OFF does not affect your current ROM and your apps. (UNLESS you have to downgrade your HBoot in order to get AlphaRev / Revolutionary to work - That will format your device)
BTW, You can backup apps using a backup app like Titanium Backup, Just so you know.
Thanks but how??
Just install it. It's available on the market, both Free and Premium versions. But, it needs root initially. So, before you switch ROMs, you will have to root and install this app.
One word of advice - When you do backup using Titanium backup, Press Menu > Batch, then select "Backup User Apps". Do NOT select "Backup User Apps + System Data". It will help prevent a lot of hassles.
Here's the official site, with all info you need to know:
http://matrixrewriter.com/android/
Thanks and yes can you tell how to root my phone,.
I dont want some other rom .. i love some sens apps (though i hate the ui)
If you are having Eclair (Android 2.1), you can use Unrevoked. Guide here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=824396
If you are having Froyo (Android 2.2), you will have to use Revolutionary to gain S-OFF and a Custom Recovery, then flash Superuser Binary. You can refer the outline of the procedure here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1029318
I have 2.2 will it wipe my stock rom?
No. But if you have to downgrade your HBoot by following this thread: (Incase you have HBoot 1.01.0002 and Revolutionary fails in getting S-OFF)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1132028
Then it will wipe your stock ROM.
I have hboot 1.00.0222 no work around? I see you use cm7 is it really better than
,sense ?
It's a personal preference. There are many here who like Sense, and hence, stick with it. I tried CM7, and I liked it better than Sense (With probably only the dialer app in Sense being better - But, I have grown used to it), hence, I am using CM7
If you have HBoot 1.01.0002, then, you can try using Revolutionary without downgrading. There are cases when it works. (Especially if your phone is not branded). BUT, if it fails, you will have to downgrade, and, no, there is no workaround.
Okay i wil give revolutionary a try

choosing the correct RUU for my device

Good morning Developers and community
As i'm completely new to HTC devices, flashing, rooting, and so on ... i've got a short question for you all
Actually i'm on an Austrian (A1) branded and simlocked HTC Desire HD with a Vodafone_fr branding (yes the provider uses that *** branding)
Android Version: 2.3.3
HTC Sense: 2.1
Baseband: 12.56.60.25U_26.10.04.03_M
Kernel: 2.6.35.10-gd2564fb
Build: 2.50.163.3 CL123205 release-keys
Software: 2.50.163.3
As i want to get rid of al these annoying pre-installed trial apps and as i want to recieve OTA updates in time and not when the provider is ready to send them (if they do ...) i decided to root the device by using the
new aahk tool to try to get 2.3.4 or higher for my DHD somehow
This aahk worked perfect for my device, no problems at all and i could get rid of all these apps, freeing some memory in my device
As this tool roots, Radio s-off, sets super cid, removes the simlock on this phone
i'm currently not able to get ota updates from anywhere (if i got that right from all the threads i read)
Now i was thinking about flashing the device with a htc rom and found this one on shipped-roms:
RUU_Ace_Gingerbread_S_HTC_WWE_2.50.405.2_Radio_12.54.60.25_26.09.04.11_M2_release_199042_signed.exe
The questions i have to you all are:
- is this the correct RUU for my device
- if i flash the device with an RUU, i'm i able to get OTA updates or do i have to set it to Radio S-ON manually again.
- if so - how ?
- is the simlock still removed with an RUU flash ?
i don't care if i have root access or not as i only want to have a clean installation without any provider c**p on my device
Thank you all in advance for your answers

- yes 2.50.405.2 is the latest official RUU
- You don't need to be S-ON to get OTA
- This RUU doesn't contain anything for Simlock (as it is operator specific)
Have you flashed a custom recovery like 4EXT or CMW? If not then flashing it will help you to flash between different custom ROMs..

Wow thank you so much for your quick reply!
Hm good question. I just used the aahk tool to get rid of the sim lock and to get root access.
I did not install any rom so far.
The tool also set a SuperCID. Don't know if i matters or not.
According to the tool, the clockworkmod is installed and i can see it in the bootloader and i already did a backup of my rom to the SD card.
(go to recovery -> ClockworkMod v5.0.2.0)
But will the CWM still remain after the RUU flash !?
Thought, that it will be overwritten and the phone un-rooted
thx again !
Good news, if u already have clockwork recovery installed than no need to flash the ruu as it will overwrite recovery. You can either try my GB Sense 3.0 or i can give u an optimized / rooted 2.50.x build if u want

Trying to summarize:
- OTA does not work with both of them if i got it right
- if I flash with 2.50.x RUU build from HTC i can re-root this build again using the aahk tool (should work with 2.50) and i have an unbranded rootet DHD without any provider apps again.
- if I take your optimized build i don't need to re-root it (what's the "optimized" part in your build? )
- if I take GB Sense 3.0 then I have a "brand new" rooted? DHD and I can go back to the rom i currently have.
any recommendations?
If u flash 2.50 via ruu it'll remove custom recovery & rooting. U'll still get OTA with it.
If u flash a pre-rooted / optimized 2.50 build, ur custom recovery will remain & u'll get OTA..
If u flash GB Sense 3.0 since it is a leaked version so i don't think any chances of OTA, however u can flash any rom u want..
