Coming from an iPhone 4S, I wanted to know if there was a way to map the volume up button to become the shutter when in the Camera app.
The camera in AOKP has an option to use the power button as a shutter.
Most ROMs have an option to use the power button as the shutter as mentioned. The vol keys are typically reserved for zoom; although I can't think of a ROM off hand that has ported this forward to ICS yet.
Well I'm currently using AOKP and never knew this option existed! Just tried it out and it worked great...thanks!
The app shot control lets you map the hardware buttons. Great camera app and only one which makes use of new ICS camera API so far.
CM7 had this as an option, I'm sure the CM team is going to add this in to CM9 eventually.
AOKP has this for the volume rocker and power buttons

Any app or hacked camera .apk that will allow one to use the volume keys to take photos? I hate onscreen camera buttons.
Bumping. Would love to know the answer to this.

Coming previously from another Samsung phone... I've had the same gripe before... I don't know if it's possible on the GNex but I know it has been done before on several other Samsung phones.
Our phone has an awesome camera but the Samsung developers continue to neglect obvious features like a dedicated camera button. In CM9, you are given the option to assign different buttons to be used as a camera button and this is extremely helpful. Otherwise, you and fumbling around blindly trying to find the on screen button to take a picture.

Is it possible to add the power toggles to the notification menu? That was one of the most convenient aspects of Android.

If anyone could help I would definitely appreciate it, thank you for your consideration.
The notification power options can be built using Widgetsoid from the Market. It's free. This feature is also built into many custom ROMs, like AOKP and CM9 Kang.
Is this what you mean by camera button? Flash this, and then volume up becomes a dedicated camera button - http://rootzwiki.com/topic/13899-mod-camera-buttonvstart-and-take-pics-with-volume/

That solution eliminates either the volume up or volume down button. Is there a reason why simultaneous press of both volume up and volume down is not an option to maintain function of the volume up and volume down respectively?
Is there a mod, or more realistically just a different app, that allows you to map one of the volume rocker buttons or even the power button to be a shutter button for the camera? 85% of the time the on screen button is fine, but for the times it's not it's almost maddeningly frustrating. I also find the lack of a self timer kind of strange.
Pardon if this is a strange request. I got used to my Eris, which had both a self timer and the functionality of pressing the trackball to snap a photo.
Agreed i kinda liked having a physical button on my iPhone
Use Camera FX, you can map any key to any function.

not any key.yuo cannot map the home button or the lock button(this should be the main button for camera shutter)
I have done a search but cannot find a thread that asks for this.
Is it possible to create a mod that will allow for the volume buttons to be used as a camera button, when in the camera app I mean? Thanks.
already done..flash manhattan rom!
Cheers. Flashed the ROM last night and it is fantastic. I hope more people incorporate it into their own ROMs soon.
I'm just wondering if either the Home button or Power button can be used as a camera button.
If you use Apex or Nova launcher (and probably others), you can configure the home button to open the camera app, but not to actuate the shutter.
On my skyrocket a dev implemented volume down to take a picture. Personally I love that feature. I know there's an app called ics camera that you can set up the volume buttons to take pictures, but I actually really like the stock interface of the touchwiz camera.
