so after having the iphone since the second gen 3G came out until next week, i'll be trying an android. pretty much my stupid self dropped and broke my iphone and i just ordered a Galaxy Nexus and will be running tmobile on it. a couple straight up questions
1. should i reflash to another rom (if so where can i learn more)? i'm going to update to newest firmware when i get it but i've read some places that new custom roms will increase speed a lot and have other benefits
2. essential must have apps (both paid/unpaid)?
3. is there such thing as "jailbreaking" the phone?
4. comments on overcloking the Galaxy Nexus? i'm not a fan of messing with hardware, but might be a little fun...?
5. itunes sync? i love itunes, how do i sync and get my music from itunes on?
So you're basically asking to keep being held by your hand instead of reading some on your own?

i suggest you to keep ur phone stock for at least a couple of month to see how it works
in the while u can keep reading the forums to learn
then if u are not satisfied by the stock rom, u can start modding ur phone to make it better (thanks to the fact that u know how it was before)
(thats what i did when i was a noob, i just read and read)

You should stick to stock and get acquainted with android and what you want to do as you go along. Wanting to do everything up front before you know is just asking for trouble.

1. Check the GSM nexus development thread
2. What apps did u use on ur iPhone???? . Some thing.... sort of
3. Its called rooting....
4. Franco kernal is prob the best IMO
5. I think there is an app. Again. Google it

instead of using iTunes, simply connect your USB cable from phone to computer, then copy/paste files from computer to your device, and you're done.... freedom from itunes.... this even works on multiple computers.... break free from the chains of iTunes !
Yeah for music you just drag and drop, no app is needed. Plug in the cable, copy paste you songs to the phone. So easy.

This is one option. Another option is to upload all of your music to Google Music and just stream it from WHEREVER you are! (recommended if you have unlimited data)
another option for itunes sync is the doubletwist and airsync apps. look them up in the play store

Wait til you know the ropes before you start looking into rooting. Once you get there it'll be a whole new world. iphones, jail breaking & iOS in general are SOOOOO much less complicated than hardcore modding of an Android device. Remember that there's risk involved in rooting. Moral of the story if you don't know what you're doing you'll wind up with a $500 paper weight. If you get stumped and have any questions shoot me a PM and I'll be glad to help you out.

My advice is root immediately, but just stay on the completely stock rom. That's what I did, ran stock for a few months but rooted. This way its less painful when you are ready to tweak. And also there are things you'll wanna do and tweak. Root just means admin access. So for example you may wanna install a lost my phone app, put it on the system so its safer and more robust. Need root for that stuff etc.

I have decided that I can not deal with the locked bootloader on this tablet and have chosen to sell it (got more then I paid). The A100 is a wonderful tablet and has great potential but the lack of developers and dead end bootloader is a showstopper.
I am waiting for another brand 7 inch tablet to arrive by Fedex later this week. It has the same basic specs as the a100. CWM is already available and there is a small amount development going on. But it is new on the market. No ICS yet. There is some talk in getting CM9 on it.
It is really disappointing that the 10 inch tabs are getting all of the glory, I really think the 7 inch is the best size for carrying with you.
see yah!
The locked bootloader isn't a big deal for me because the tab already does everything I want it to do. The only thing that could make this tab already better than what it is would be the unlocked bootloader that way we could look at different rom options (but to be honest the rom that's currently there isn't that bad at all). Granted it would be nice to overclock, but its already pretty fast and I haven't really had any hiccups while using it since I released the custom build.prop (except for using hdmi which I'm working on).
I think eventually we'll get some sort of work around for the bootloader working, its just a matter of time. I'm definitely not going to drop this tab though just because we don't have it figured out yet.
I do wish there was someone other than myself that's taken an interest in this tab that knows their way around custom recoverys and bootloaders since that's not one of my strong points but at least I'm trying to help.
I wont call you a sell out, but I will wish you good luck with your new device and happy modding!

I think its a simple way of letting their frustrations go. I was just doing some research on this tab as I'd like to have a nice little 7 inch carry along but not so sure about it with the locked b/l and bad viewing angles.
Is the screen as bad as it looks in videos? From what I've seen and read this thing runs very smooth and lagfree, am I right about that?
Thanks for any info.

Theres really only 1 bad angle which is about 120 degrees towards the bottom. It gets darker. So jus flip it 180 in landscape and youre good. Left, right and top angle are great IMO. As far as speed. Here's one I posted....you be the judge....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-99O4-gmQ6E&list=UUHqepxR6_suYYKySqKxymDg&index=3&feature=plcp
The only lag I've ever experienced was when I was on the early 3.2 builds. After upgrading to the latest 3.2.1and running the custom build.prop, the only bit of lag I've seen is playing 720p video in flash and 720p software mode video on hdmi out. But my atrix had the same issue, so I think its just a limitation of stock tegra2. I resovled it on my atrix by overclocking, so if we ever find a method of running a custom kernel I think it'll be resolved.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
I have never experienced any lag whatsoever in the a100. also, i have heard so much about the viewing angles, and as aznmode said, there is only one slightly off angle and there is no reason whatsoever to have to be looking in that angle unless you just choose to do so. I have several tabs and i use the acer more than the others combined because it does everything that is needed and it is very easy to carry around. Also I have hear reviewers complain about the battery, however i can useit on and off all day long without charging and also it charges twice as fast as most. i wouldn't hesitate to purchase this tab again, i would just love to see some more development. The rom itself is very fast and extremely stable, the only real complaint that i have about the tab is that i would like to see usb host mode working. i also wanted to say thanks to crossix and all of the other devs that have put alot of work into it so far!

If you have a big microsd card, you could swap it with the internal memory (I really need to add direct links to these things to my signature..).
Just out of curiosity has anyone contracted koush to see if he can unlock the bootloader. On his website he says that he just needs the tablet for about a week. I know that you guys have been working on it and have made some bits of progress, but maybe a new set of eyes might be helpful. I do support for two as we got the kids some for Christmas but I need to leave them stock so they can't get into and erase stuff they need for them to run.
Don't want to step on anyone's toes or if this has already been attempted just disregard.
Thanks to the developers for their work.

I started this thread when I was really pissed off at the A100. Between my touch screen failing and the many hours spent to get a working tun.ko on it. Due to the encrypted kernel I could not even load a kernel module.
To explain I need tun.ko and advanced routing so I can connect to a Cisco VPN for work. While waiting for my tab to be returned from service went to Best Buy and picked up the Samsung Galaxy tab plus, installed VPNC and it worked with no problem.
The A100 is a really nice device and for 90% of people it is perfect. I actually preferred the styling compared to the Samsung slab, but VPN is the reason I wanted a tab in the first place.
I wish you all good luck with cracking the bootloader.
I plan on keeping my a100 at least until I can afford a tegra 3 tab.

I use remote desktop with a virtual pc setup to connect up to my works Cisco VPN and it works really well, especially when I have a bluetooth keyboard and mouse connected up to the tab (I also use this same setup with my atrix), it works great!
I also use this same setup for one of my clients Nortel Networks VPN which doesn't work at all on android nativity. I'm sorry you had a bad experience with the a100 but for the price its hard to find fault with it.

Agreed the price is right.
The virtual PC solution is not an option since I not only need it for RDP and VNC but also to sync my contacts, email and calendar. I was connecting to my home VPN and then jumping through to work but I need my contacts and email in somewhat a real time solution.

Like I said earlier try kid mode from the market. It's kind of a launcher in a way. You set it up so that your kid only has access to certain apps. They can't make calls can't even run the browser unless you allow it. I have it on my phone and I love it.

I was just looking for exactly that. For those that are wondering why a kid would need a smartphone etc., it's not the point. They wouldn't be using it as a smartphone. I have an old SGS1 that I don't see why I couldn't repurpose as a media-player device + for my daughter. An ipod would do the trick but 1) this thing would kick the pants off any ipod I've seen so far capabilities wise (16GB built in, microSD slot up to 32GB, bigger higher resolution screen, play whatever media format you put in it, etc.) and with voodoo sound even the sound quality is better, 2) it's not made by Apple, and 3) I've already got it. I will try the kid mode launcher another poster mentioned below but I think there could be a market for this judging by the amount of kiddie tablets etc. that are on the market now and way cheaper if you already have a device or can pick one up used. Will post back after trying the kid mode deal.
Sounds interesting. Maybe one that is baby proof. So that they can't mess things up like send unwanted messages or delete stuff or make calls. Not so I don't have to watch them but so that I don't have to keep taking it from them
Nova will accomplish all this stuff, or other apps. You just hide apps you don't want them using. Like market, system apps... Etc. The only issue would be browser. But I'm sure that could be dealt with also. And yeah.... If they are sharing the parents phone... What good would a safety rom be when I need my phone. And if it's their phone... It's simple to kid proof. My 5 year old has an s2 we didn't need anymore. It has Netflix, some games, some videos on it.... And just about every thing else is hidden. Never had an issue with her getting into things she shouldn't. As far as games that can lead you to market and purchases.... There's a password for purchases and generally I just get rid of those games.
Anyway.... No, the kids rom would never be made.... But really, once you kid proof your device... That's basically what you have. So there's no point.

Seems a little ridiculous, since the ICS built in browser already syncs with your Chrome account, and a plugin sends pages that you have open to your phone (actually you can use chrome to phone with gingerbread...).
It's only available for 4.0 and up because of hardware acceleration in ICS. I just used it a few minutes ago and it takes some getting used to but I actually like it. It is much faster than the stock browser and the whole bookmark transfer is pretty sweet. I saw that someone was able to open over 99 pages before it finally crashed. Lol

It's just their next gen browser. They're looking to replace the standard Android browser with this. I bet eventually they integrate chrome apps as well and try to use that to replace Chrome OS and maybe make a netbook version of Android.
I do agree and I do see where flash can be handy but it has to work good on all android phone. Unfortunetely it doesnt on the slower phones. Android has to be uniform across all phones and right now it isn't. Looking at this browser I am seeing how a browser should be. Just the option to have all your computers bookmarks synched and the option to see all windows open on other computers is just awesome. That option alone has me sold. This is a big step forward for android. The browser always leaves me wanting more. There are third party browsers but why would you have to use an third party when your running on one of the best operating systems out there. Oh and the other big thing is how it handles multiple windows this ****s on the iPhone.
You can get porn without flash...don't ask me how I know...

Stock and raise the font size to Large. And try BigLauncher.

I know someone who bought a galaxy nexus, but she does not know much about technology. She will use the phone pretty basically and needs it to be pretty easy to use for basic calling and text etc. Any apps i can run to provide an easy to use interface? Or any good widgets etc..? Thanks

Why would an older person buy a smartphone this expensive?
But anyways, the best you can do is just help her customize the home screen for things she does the most, like calling and messaging, as well as tweak the phone settings (like the font size). Nexus comes with some useful widgets too, like Direct Messaging and Direct Dial. And you can add Google Calendar widget if she sets appointments and then there's an app 'ICS Notes', a holo-themed app that sync's with Google Tasks, for easy note taking.
Of course the latter two are difficult if she doesn't use 3G. If she's really only using the phone for calling and texting, then a feature phone would have been a better idea.
Calling and messaging are pretty easy to use, just launch them from the dock. What i don't understand is why would anyone carry a 4.65" duo core+1GB RAM smartphone if they are not going to use it as it was intended. I say let her sell the nexus and buy a dummy phone, which does all the basic functions. Windows phone is also an option. u can also install wp7 launcher on the nexus, although i consider it as a waste..

I usually like ur posts and contribution to this forum, but u're wrong on this one, it's like buying a Ferrari F50 without knowing how to drive.

So you're saying that just because she's a novice user she doesn't deserve a good device? Or saying that she's too dumb to figure out how to use it for more later? I'd never want to force someone into a POS dumbphone if they were willing to try a smartphone and figure it out for themselves.
Honestly the only limiting factor to this device's widespread usability is its physical size.

I guess I am creating this thread because, to be honest, I am quite bored of my Galaxy Nexus.
I want to be using my phone all the time, but I guess I just don't know how to do it. What are people doing on their phones these days after they've customized it to their exact preference?
What apps are people using?
Disappointing, but this is about 99% of my GNex's usage.
1) Phone
2) Google Voice to Texting
3) Browsing tech sites, reddit, forums and downloading Movies from RLSLOG
4) No games (only Temple run 2)
5) Emails
6) Pandora for music
7) Watch downloaded movies
8) GPS for navigation
9) Flashed roms
10) Wifi tethering my SmartTV to netflix.
I don't really have much apps. I don't do social media such as twitter or facebook. I don't follow anyone's else lives.
Sometimes I turn on the phone's screen just for the sake of turning the phone's screen on without any real use.
I must either be bored of the GNex, or I am simply not using my phone to it's full potential (which I want to!)
What are people doing these days? Are they taking another language course on their phone? Watching youtube all day?
I am waiting for Ubuntu to release their Android image so my eyes can be glued to my phone again. I wish there was a Windows Phone 8 Port so I can mess with that too. Then there's WebOS port which doesn't seem to have any development anymore.
Please, your tips would be welcomed.
congrtas you are one of the sane ones.

If you customized it completely to your preference it's time to wipe and flash something new, of course!

I use it similar to the way you use it, but hell if I want my eyes to be glued to my phone all day long. Bored? Find a girlfriend. Or a hobby.
A phone is a tool, it suppose to assist you when you need it. It is not your social life nor is it suppose to replace it.

Try building a rom for the gnex? I just recently learned how to build from source following one of the how to guides, for cm10 and so next is learning to cherry pick

I think you answered your own question. "When you get your phone to exact preference."
I personally keep chasing the flashing. I have never had a custom ROM setting or kernel perfect. Everyday new updates come out and makes me want to explore other ROMs,kernels, themes, mods etc.
Here's what I did. Flash rasbean jelly with lean, then the new 4.2.1 update came for sprint so I got that, flashed paranoid, went back to stock 4.0.4 and installed the OTAs, then learned adb and flash update manually. I'm completely stock 4.2.1 and I want to go to rasbean because they just updated today. Awesome beats just came out with V4, and next I seen a theme that imitates the Ubuntu os.
I don't think I can ever be happy with my phone again. And when I mean happy that means locked boot loader. Its like crack, once you try it (unlock) you get hooked and keep coming back for more.
Does anyone else feel like this or should I go seek help?

Completely acceptable if you ask me. But almost all my techie stuff (phone, tablet, android sticks, routers, tv-watching box/pvr) is flashed with some kind of Linux, so perhaps I'm not the right person to answer this...

Using it ? Just broke 310 hours without reboot. Running stock 4.1.2, stock kernel, rooted.
Being 3 years in the scene, I got bored with modifying and basically I did it on previous devices because they were lacking something. GN + JB doesn't.
When i find that im getting bored of my phones i usually fire up the Camera and begin putting the camera through its paces trying to take great pics at awkward angles and all that, lol, or i just start browsing for new HD games to buy.
I have quite a few apps, but honestly they never get used..probably titanium backup and root explorer are my most used one...bored with galaxy? start flashing roms..

I'll be honest, I bought my galaxy nexus by accident (thought I would be outbid on ebay ) and I have been an avid iPhone user. I became interested in the android platform due to the upcoming linux port, and the nexus is starting to warm up on me. I've mainly been using the tethering feature which I was not able to use on my iPhone 5 because of the carrier restrictions.
I'm in the same boat, but I received a beta invite to INGRESS a few weeks ago and it has changes my daily commutes. I've been hacking and attacking portals.
A little warning: Since it's a GPS augmented reality game with 3D effects, it sucks the life out of your battery.
When I get bored with the Twitter's and Facebook, I end up trying different ROMs and/or finding ways to make it work more efficiently (e.g. NFC tags and profiles). However, there's always time for Bejeweled.

I use my phone the way the op describes.
Dropped my gnex and it has a nasty crack in the screen... so I'm giving it a break and using another device in the meantime.
No longer bored with the gnex because I'm not using it . When I get re-bored of my sgs2, it'll be nexus time again.
