Oh no!?! FC09 fail - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I was on the people's rom 2.0 and i decided to try and odin fc09 but I didnt realize i had to check re partition for mtd and now...well, you guys probably know what happened. So it reboots and everythings back to stock as far as I can see and now Im in Android system recovery <3e> but dont see any options to back up my rom or anything. Can anyone help me out? I'm really freaking out. Thanks much in advance.

You can go to the development sub and click on the clockwork mod thread. Download the oden flashable version. Follow the directions in that thread.
You can restore your backup once you do that.
Don't boot your phone or it erases your recovery.

Could you give me a link? I saw several different ones and I don't want to make another stupid mistake haha and I'm on ginger bread

Google Qbking77's video on How to root EL30 on Samsung Epic. All the files you need are linked at the end of the video.

where can i get the stock odib eb13
There's usually a .tar packed up with odin that is stock ec05 no root.....
The file should read something like "stock-sph-d700-odin.tar" or something along those lines
Do you want root or not because if you do still want it rooted you can just flash chris41g's stock ec05 plus rom through odin..... ill throw a link up in a few just in case......
yes please post a link i tried using samsungs tool but it dosent do crap

I don't know if you've tried this, but qbking77 has some really good videos on YouTube.

Where do i start with this device????

Iv'e come across the samsung epic 4g, I HAVE NO IDEA on where to start with rooting it or recovery's or anything of it's nature, I come from the land of the HTC EVO so everything pertaining to the Epic 4G is like alien language to me, So basically can someone point me to a noob guide or something like that lol? thank in advance.
Under our Android Development, you should find everything you need stickied.
You'll want:
Odin and if I were you, I'd start of with an EC05 Stock Rom, odexed, RFS, but with root, cwm 3.1, and that sort of goody.
Once flashed, you'll want to nandroid backup, and then start seeing what you want, and how you'll go about achieving that.
Stickied at the top of this forum. 67 videos by qbking77 tells all including needed links.

basically everything you do on this phone is through clockworkmod. forget about rom manager. after you do a backup and you want to flash a new rom, you'll want to do full wipe 3x every time you want to flash a rom.
the links and instructions and the "what is that?" for odin as well as rooting instructions are in the first link... the second link will upgrade you to our current CWM (purple)
Edit: I would stick to EC05 stuff at first... it's our current stable 2.2 build. all of our 2.3 stuff is leaks and most of them behave naughty. So my advice is definitely stick to EC05 until you find your footing

Updateing used epic

Searched and searched. Bought a used in great shape epic for my son for christmas and I wanted to set it up on cleanGB like I have mine and the wifes set up (very stable an fast). I odined it back to stocj ec05 and when it prompted to update it failed. So I tried the update.zip for ei22 thru recovery and it also failed. I've seen a thread here for the same problem but I couldn't find the thread. If some one could point me in the rite direction to get it to ei22 I would greatly appreciate it.
I have everything saved on my pc to root and apply all the fixes (gps, keyboard) and to root I just need to get the phone to that point first.
Thanks

You could odin in the recovery (ACS or CWM) while on EC05, then flash the EC05 to EI22 Modem zip file (somewhere in thee dev forum), then flash CleanGB.
Edit: I am pretty sure that the only reason you want the OTA update is to get the EI22 modem.

did it update rite to EI22 that why or did it go thru the other updates first?
Forgive me for this question but why would you even want to wait on the OTA update if you are just going to flash an EI22 ROM over it? With EC05 (and backwards) you could even do the 1-click root method and not even mess with Odin.
Am I missing something with the OTA update? Is there concern with the EC05toEI22.zip? I used it to get to the EI22 modem and it was quick and painless.

Don't forget to also apply the cwm 5 zip. You can do this after flashing cleangb if u want, but you will need to do the 3 finger method.

So you were able to get to EC05? If so, flash CWM recovery from Odin and try the 3 finger boot. Or actually, it doesnt matter if you got EC05 loaded or not, just Odin CWM and boot into recovery and flash CleanGB from there.

Nope. One clicks don't work on 2.3.5. You need to use Odin to install CWM 5.027, then pull the battery before it boots, power up into CWM first then flash a custom GB ROM.

Why not just have him install the gb3.tar kernel instead of "pull the battery before it boots" much easy and less fearfull.

No but it qbkings tutorial he says to flash the kernel first.... then flash Cwm just saying it would be less chance of error. Something in the stock kernel has a script that searches for cwm and causes it to delet after the first boot anyways.....

Exactly! And no worries about it overwriting recovery as long as you flash a custom gb rom (there is a mostly stock one if trying to stay stock) as the kernel will be included with the rom... don't let biggorn scare you... its not scary to pull the battery after odin ;-)

Flashing a custom rom.... and a custom kernel.
Suggestions: legendary 2.2 and the samurai or shadow kernel
MarcusantRom revival v2..... just go through the android development forums to see which rom you'd like to use. Just be careful what your trying to download thought. If your Rom is BML or MTD then you have to download that type of kernel.

U don't even have to pull out the battery is instantly boots up into cwm that's what happened to me when I got my replacement that was already on ei22 I just connected to odin and flashed the latest cwm and had a rom already on my sd card so I just flashed the rom when it opened cwm for me
Its very easy and no worries and if it doesn't open cwm its not like your phone will brick or anything u just need to try again. To flash a kernel would be easy too

edit.
haha forgot there was a second page..... use remember you can go from bml to bml, or bml to mtd, mtd to mtd type roms. YOU CAN NOT JUST FLASH FROM MTD TO BML!!! you must odin back to ec05 and make sure repartition is checked and use the victory pit. happy playing
just remember though... after reading the information on these forums, and you are still unsure or whatever... ask questions, ask questions , ask questions...

It will fail to update since your rooted you have to go completely stock to upgrade and once upgraded its the same root process with the exception of using a different kernel.

Am I doing it correctly

So I'm still pretty new on the E4GT forums, having recently come over from a Nexus one, which was quite a bit easier to mess with as far as ROM's are concerned, and much less easy to brick. About the only thing that could brick an N1 was flashing a radio, and new radio's didn't come out that often, so no big deal.
I'm currently running Calkulins EL29 mod with an FC14 modem on my E4GT, but I'm really wanting to mess with the testing builds of CM9, I really miss CM. All the steps seems to spread out across multiple threads, so I want to make sure I do it correctly so as not to brick.
1. nandroid backup, backup, backup
2. boot to download mode
3. load stock cwm el26 through odin
4. flash cm9 zip
5. mess around with it.
Where I'm a little confused is how to get back to where I was should I decide to wait some more. How do I get back to the EL29 CWM so that I can then restore the nandroid backup? Also, will I need to flash different modems again, or can I stick with the fc14 modem through all of this?
Please understand that I'm not a total n00b at all of this, been flashing all kinds of ROM's on my old Nexus one for two years, just don't have much experience with Sammy devices.
You just want too flash roms and themes?

Themes, not really, but ROM's yes. It's just a bit confusing cause I see things like, you need this CWM for this, you need to flash this, or you need to Odin that, you need this specific CWM for this, or you need to get back to stock before you fan flash or Odin this or that.
But what I'm really wanting help with at this moments, is the testing build of CM9, and then how to get back if I don't like it at this time.
Ok....I download roms straight from xda app and then I go to recovery......do a full wipe....wipe data/wipe dalvic/wipe cache/wipe battery stats.........then I install .zip (rom) then reboot.....that's all I do,its pretty simple

The problem is that CM9 is an ICS ROM, you can't just flash willy nilly as there are a lot of reports of people bricking their phones cause they didn't use the right recovery. How to flash CM9 on is not my problem, it's how to get back to EL29 if I don't like the current testing build of CM9.
Ohh yeah....I don't mess with that stuff lol,can't take a chance.......but everyone says don't.
And I love cm7 can't wait for cm9 to be stable

The guy you just quoted... just told you where to find that information. :what:
This has been discussed ad nauseum all over the forums, and if you do a bit of research you will find the exact procedure. Since I'm on my phone, kinda a pain to type it all out. But he's right, the point is to get back to stock GB rom before restoring any GB nandroids. (specifically before wiping any partitions, but that's yet another long explanation.) This issue And procedure is the same for ICS leaks, for cm9, for AOKP.
Look for a sticky thread in general titled "how not to brick your phone" or something.
Or, god forbid, actually read one of the ICS/cm9/AOKP/leak threads. I swear, every third page you will see someone ask this and the process described.
And QBKING77s videos have a step by step explanation for this as well. Really the best way.
And yes, you can keep the modem, no matter what rom/kernel you run. Same thing as a "radio".
