[QUEST] To save a ex-blacklisted Hero

Super condensed prologue:
UK T-Mobile HTC Hero bought from ebay
Unlocked via an IMEI generated code (i.e not serial cable method)
Worked fine for 3 months
Sudden onset of 'No Service' and 'sim cannot connect to this network
The battle:
Use CheckMEND to find status of IMEI
It's bloody blacklisted! (Seller is conducting insurance fraud...)
Contact T-mobile - they confirm there are many problems with the IMEI
Contact the seller - no help
Explain to seller I have figured out his full name, address, phone number and that I now know his wife was recently prosecuted for benefit fraud (she is actually the registered seller)
He tells me he will call later
No call - I call him, he says I won't get my money back
The uplifting moment:
I call Tmobile - they have now removed the blacklist
The seller must have informed Tmobile that it wasn't really lost
The crash:
The blacklist seems to have modified the handset so it's locked to Tmobile again.
T-mobile SIMs work.
All other report No Service.
Also, going into the test mode (VOL DOWN + PWR ON) I find that the SIMLOCK status now reports FILE OPEN FAILED!
Quest?:
I will fix this problem....
I've already:
Made a gold card
Flashed Generic latest ROM
Does anyone know how to re-flash the SIMLOCK area - even to default would help?
Would running the CID commands through a serial cable help?

To note: Now rooted with instant root. Will try and flash a recovery image and see what happens.
[METHOD] (source forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4750940&postcount=4 - edited a live download location for Instant Root)
I first followed the instructions on making a goldcard and then flashed the 2.73.405.5 WWE rom fine.
Now make sure you have the cm-hero-recovery.img (content.modaco.net/dropzone/m...covery-1.0.zip) on the root of your sdcard.
Aswell as Instant Root (tecnophone.it/wp-content/uploads/Instant-Root-by-tecnophone.zip) now install Instant Root on the phone.
It should pop up with a notification "instant root was successfully" or along those lines. (If you have a problem installing Instant Root make sure Settings>Applications>Unknown Sources is checked)
Instant root then allows for root access with adb shell using the following 2 commands:
1) adb shell
then
2) su
the icon should change from a $ to #.
Now flash the recovery image with the following command:
1) flash_image recovery /sdcard/cm-hero-recovery.img
[/METHOD]
If flashing fails I'll try doing this with serial commands. I've seen a few people about the net with similar issues so hopefully if I am successful!

Just some extra info...
The handset may not be locked back to t-mobile as you cant lock a handset OTA, T-mobile are the only UK network that can actually amend the blacklist for other networks as its owned by T-mobile. When a csa/csr what ever they call them, removes the blacklist it removes it from T-mobile only as the assumption is you should not remove another networks blacklist request. If you are not the original owner of the handset and some CSR has removed they they have made a mistake (you bonus) but if it was not originally blacklisted by t-mobile the other networks will stay dead to it..

It works on T-mobile. but not other network.
It doesn't ask for an unlock code - Is there another lock somewhere?

I have just remembered the name of the system "Dali" if you speak to a team manager and say you have been told you need the blacklist removing from it if its still on..
If its not showing on that then it must be a handset issue..

It is definately no longer blacklisted - meaning it's handset.
So this could be coincidental timing? I have a copy of the CheckMEND report saying it had been blacklisted.
Are we sure that T-mob cannot do something OTA?
Is there any way to restore the simlock data to default - I.e. relock it so I can re-enter my unlock code?

instead of using the gold card way to get the recover image use http://android.modaco.com/content/h...ng-the-patched-recovery-image-on-your-device/ if you havent already got it on, then put generic rom on and re try,, just an idea its how i flashed mine with new roms, never used a gold card

I've got the patched recovery image on now - using gold card.
Could you do me a favour and do the following and post results for comparison:
Turn phone on holding VOL DOWN + POWER
Then goto Fastboot
Then press CALL to do the SIMLOCK test
I get:

FAT32 Init Ok
Open File Fail
---
Your result may really help guide my research&testing here!

I also just thought - would one of those Rebel Sim Cards get round this?!

still waiting for my code, I have had to downgrade to a GSM rom as the new eris 2.1 leaks are cdma and dont offer the sim unlock option!!

If the phone is locked when you put another sim with another nck code it will auto appear, have you tried another rom like mrbang;s?

Some details from an Dutch Retail unlocked phone.
So never had an simlock:

I have a Hero (G2) which was on T-Mobile but was unlocked with a code from eBay.
Just tried the simlock test and get the same result as everyone else...

I'm using a custom ROM but is based on a stock one.

I have an unlocked phone and I also get the same output regarding simlock.
(not rooted, stock rom)

Here is what I have discovered so far.
!!Please don't mess with any of this unless you know what you are doing AND you can take it back to t-mobile if the buttons stop working. !!
This phone is going to be a real challenge. None of the unlock stuff works.
If you type *#7465625# into the dialer it FC
If you put in another SIM it says no SIM and never asks for an unlock code (on my first one the front buttons even stopped working)
There are no files big enough in /efs/ to be the nv_data.bin that we all know and love
The /tombstone folder show some promise but I am not sure if you can edit any of those modem images.
Has anyone had one of these apart? Do we know what modem chip they have? The Europe S2 at least had an nv_data.bin file.
Let me know what you guys have seen. Any of the ROM devs have the *#7465625# screen working or the unlock popup when you put in another SIM?
I appreciate any input on this. Sorry that I have hit such a wall on this one

correction, if you put in a non Tmo SIM card it will pop up the same screen found on other SGS1/2 asking for the SIM unlock PIN
mine is unlocked already over the web, let me know if you want me to look up something, as i now have my own unlock code to compare against

That is really crazy because I have had 2 now that won't even ask for the code with an ATT sim. What ROM are you guys running?

I was on rooted stock when I got an unlock code over the web from TMo. Don't know if that made a difference.

I got mine <24H but when I put in an ATT sim it just said "no sim card"

stock Tmo ROM (i bough the Tmo version of the T989)
no root
the first thing i did after i unboxed the phone was to plug in my WIND SIM card to see if it was unlocked or not, but immediately got that POP up asking for the PIN

WOW.... maybe they just block ATT sims :'(

I found an older ATT sim and managed to unlock my phone but I couldn't find any differences in any of the files I backed up. It must interface directly with the modem somehow. Maybe there is a /dev/ device that has the modem configuration but is only mounted when you use the unlock code. Anyone have any information on that?

I have an SGS2 that has been affected by the corrupt efs problem (Unknown Baseband/IMEI and no sim/service). Usually restoring the backups of the nv_data files automatically generated by the phone would solve this problem but since we dont have these files I'm kinda SOL for the time being.. Any ideas??
Sorry if this is slightly off topic, but the nv_data files are directly related to previous methods of unlocking this phone, and if anyone has any idea where the equivalent files are I'm guessing they would be in this thread.

No that's fine. You are right in that if we could find the nv_data files we would be 50% of the way there. Did you flash a modem from the Europe SGS2? They are very different.
Last night I started running through 1 partition at a time like this.
Code:
cat /dev/mmcblk0p1 | grep ssnv
I am looking for a partition that might have an nv_data like file in it. The next thing I was going to do tonight is look for my unlock code in each partition. Please let me know if anyone has any ideas or a list of what all 28 partitions are.

The baseband/efs files are located in these two emmc partitions
/dev/block/mmcblk0p13 mounted to /system/etc/firmware/misc
and
/dev/block/mmcblk0p17 mounted to /system/etc/firmware/misc_mdm
with out the device mounting those points correctly, or with them being damaged you will no longer have your baseband or sim detected.

OK... I unlocked mine with a code and didn't see any change in either of those folders.

did you effectively check these files before and after an unlock? a md5sum and a binary compare.
i could be they have went the same way as htc where the nvm is on a separate mount that the radio only has access too.

I will check again... I backed up those folders before I unlocked it.
I hope they didn't lock down the NV Data :'(

ditto here. got the unlocked code from TMO. insert a non TMO sim and it asked for the code. it was successfully unlocked, but when I typed in *#7465625# it FC. I'm on Juggernaut 3.1

I still haven't found any binary diff in any files I have. There must be a mount point that we cannot see. If anyone unlocks their phone maybe a logcat would help.

It's interesting when I type that code.. I'll lose signal and it will come back (AT&T).

Foreign SIM doesn't prompt for unlock code -- how to unlock?

I have a SaskTel Samsung Galaxy S3 (SGH-I747M, baseband version I747MVLLE8) that is locked, and I want to unlock it. But when I insert a foreign SIM (from AT&T) I get no prompt for an unlock code. Instead it just says "No SIM card. Emergency calls only." I've contacted several of the online unlock code suppliers and they say without this prompt I can't unlock the phone. I've also tried to enter variations of the *7465625* code, but they do nothing at all. SaskTel says they don't provide unlock code. This despite the fact that I purchased the phone outright, and have no contract with them. Am I totally hooped, or is there some way I can get this phone unlocked?

Possible, but I doubt it, since it works just fine in another phone. In any case I don't have another one to try.

I noticed in an earlier post, the place of the unlock code was after the #, it should be before. On the right track though. Probably just a typo.

That and probably every variation of it I can think of! I am wondering though, is this code internal only to the phone, or does it go to the cellular network? When I do type it, it does nothing, though if I send it I get an "Invalid USSD" message returned from the network.

this code doesn't work on the LTE variants of the SGS3. most of the multi-stage codes (####*###) don't work, you just end up with an error.

Correct as stated. Additionally, if you have a foreign micro sim, and you are not on a stock ROM, the unlock screen prompt will not show. I was running AOKP, and could not get the prompt to show, so I flashed back to stock, unlocked phone, then flashed back to AOKP, bc TW sucks!

This is what I was starting to suspect. Can you refer me to a good, really clear step by step procedure to do this? I've never done this with a phone, and since I live in a small town, I doubt I can find anyone to help me here. So a step by step would be nice. Thanks.

are you on a stock ROM?

i have a i747M and unlocked it with the at&t micro sim, so i know it works,
did u cut ur at&t sim down to size ? maybe u did it wrong and it wont recognize, or ur sim slot is ****ed up ....
ur best bet right now is to try another micro sim

Ok, I've now got my phone rooted. Can someone suggest how I can get the ROM set so that it will allow me to enter the unlock code when I insert a foreign SIM.

There's a 3rd potential method that hasn't been mentioned on here that we see working for most Samsung handsets. In fact, for some Samsung handsets (usually older ones) it is the only unlocking method that will work.
It is:
1. Turn on the phone with a non accepted or accepted SIM card inserted
2. Type #0111*CODE# replacing CODE with your network unlock code
However, if your service provider lock is active, then you'll need to use the code #0133*CODE# instead.

I'm facing the exact same issue. My S3 doesn't show the network unlock prompt when I insert a foreign SIM. Mine is locked to AT&T. It's also SGH-I747 model

You could try and unlock your phone as per this thread:

Then try the SIM card after the phone is unlocked.
Oh, I believe this only works on Stock ROMS.

Follow the link Tybalt quoted, you will unlock your phone and the sim won't ask for an unlock code because well, it's unlocked.... Follow the instructions, you need to be on JB 4.11 for this to work, some have had success on custom roms but not many....you don't need to root to do this and make sure when you see the success code you have 40 at the end not 30... i did this a couple times... 30 I think basically means you have locked it again ... and in the instructions when it says wait 30 or 60 seconds... you really do have to wait.. don't be impatient....it's a huge thread with many many successes.....

I have the same issue but I have a sgh-i747 Samsung galaxy S3 i brought it to koodo and was told it was a compatible phone with the company when unlocked. The problem/question i have is When i insert my new simcard the screen will not display any prompt to input a unlock code. It just says emergency calls only or unregistered sim. I inserted my sim card into another s3 same model, software versions, different provider, and the phone asked for the unlock code right when powered on. So i tried and flashed a new firmware but its doing the same thing.
I called koodo and they gave me instructions to create a new apn of Koodo SP it did not make my phone prompt me for an unlock code.
When i send an email to any website about unlocking my phone they advice me not to purchase there product if my phones not prompting me for a unlock code that will it more then likely not work.
I've seen methods online of using these to input an unlock code "#0111*UNLOCKCODE#" or "#7465625*638*UNLOCKCODE#" but when i tell the unlock website this information this still tell me not to purchase there product and i mean many numerous websites. I do not want to buy an unlock code only to try to input it with these methods and have it not work. Which i highly dought it would because the normal 7465625 command doesnt work either.
I also tried this factory unlock and it did nothing

Thank you so much for this!
Whenever I typed any variation of the #7465625 code I would get the "emergency calls only" message. #0111*CODE# did the trick!
The provider didn't even know this, the best they could come up with after numerous calls to their hotline is that the phone was broken and/or that the SIM card was badly inserted, thus I should mail them the phone to the other side of the country for unlocking. Would they even have known how to do it over there?

I don't know whether here is place for it or not but i couldn't find any solution anywhere else. I bought my W nearly 1.5 years ago. Since one month earlier, everything has been fine. But then I received a message saying ''Your IMEI number is clonned, please contact with your firm.'' I went there and they said the very only solution is to bind IMEI to one phone number. This is very important for me because I use my phone for connecting net on my PC via USB Tethering and for this everytime I have to switch SIM Card. Now, I have two questions about this;
1) Is there any other legal option to do but bind the IMEI to just one stable phone?
2) If not or it's the only legal choice, what can I do to use another SIM on my phone?

Are you using Stock ROM/Firmware? Have you tried to Factory Reset your device?(Backup your files if you are planning to do so) If Factory Reset won't work, try re-Installing Stock Firmware.

I'm using LiquidSmooth v2.9, every other thing is stock. I tried changing ROM but i didn't work ( tried stock also)

Changing ROM either stock or custom won't change your IMEI. Some says you can change it using a program but I'm not sure though. In some country, changing it is illegal and punishable by law.

Yea, in my country it is illegal. But I don't want to change my IMEI, I just am asking whether there is a way to use another SIM Card when my phone's IMEI is stuck with only one stable phone number. But it seems now there is no way.

I'm a bit confused mate cause in my country we can always use different kinds of SIM Card, of course with our own country's communication networks (globe, smart, talk n text, touch mobile, sun, etc.) as long as our phone is not locked to a specific network but it can be unlock too both prepaid and post paid.

Hello, I bought a used a5 2017 phone from ebay and when I received it, my sim not worked, then my brother's sim either. I think the imei is being blacklisted. Is there any way to change it, or how?

You could try reflashing stock modem. Also Does Samsung pay open?

Someone know how?? I have never used Odin.

If the baseband version/ids/content in *#0011# isn't there, try
restarting the device?
changing firmware, preferably with a newer modem?
wiping data?
For installing firmware, there's odin. Use odin, the stock rom (official firmware), and samsung drivers, Insert the usb cable, switch off the device, hold power+volumedown+home(the button on the middle), grant its permission, select the stock rom in odin, start. New firmware might require odin 3.13.1. The error "failed: device _ binary _" means that the firmware is old, somewhere in the middle of the firmware version code is for example U5 or S5, if U6 or S6 is already on the device it won't install u5/s5.
To check if the device is blacklisted, the code is *#9900# > run cp based log > copy to sdcard. Select nothing else. It is available in the folder /sdcard/log/err/ , sdcard meaning internal storage or device storage or internal memory. Open LitmusLog....txt and scroll down, look for the part that says reject info list, look for Cause:6 (basically this device can't be used); Cause:3 (basically this device can't be used with this sim). It is also available in /sdcard/log/err/ss_log/*/cp_members.txt , but the reject cause is in hexadecimal, and resets after a reboot, compared to the other file that keeps reject causes until it's replaced or cleared in another menu. For more info contact your mobile network operator.

Sadly this not helped, the imei is blacklisted, and modem update not fixed it for me. :/ I contacted the network operator and because I'm not in contact with the person who sold me the phone, they can't tell me anything, because I don't have the rights. So I think the only way is the imei changing method, but I don't know if it's even possible or how.

I did a bit of research....
- it is illegal to change imei- if hat means anything to you, lol
- it is against Ebay's policy to sell phones with bad imei
- there is an xposed module to change imei but you would trip knox

I think in my country it's not illegal, but not quite sure.. And i didn't know this, the guy wrote it down in the ebay ad even, so it went through.
Thank you, I will look into it, but I think I will sell the phone as a 'working display part'.. Motherboards are not cheap.

It's perfectly normal except you can't use a sim card? Or is there more things wrong when imei is blocked?

It's perfectly normal, everything works, except if I insert a sim, it will show a notification: ' can't connect to network '

Imei is locked to the device as far as I know. This is why a device can be blocked after being reported as stolen. If it is imei blocked then you should get a refund or make sure Ebay is involved if the seller refuses to.
