[Q] RUU Not Working & HTC Devs Bootloader Unlock Not Working. - HTC Wildfire S

My phone will not update from any RUU & HTC Devs Unlock Bootloader also does not work.
I loaded a custom rom about a week ago and it locked my bootloader. Now I cannot do anything. My CWM Recovery has gone too. So I'm stuck.
I have managed somehow to load an old rom:
RUU_Marvel_HTC_Europe_1.33.401.2_Radio_47.10.35.3029H_7.46.35.08_release_185724_signed.
This is the only way I got my phone working again.
I have tried other Stock Roms more current via RUU, no luck.
I have tried other Stock Roms more current via Bootloader renaming to PG76IMG, no luck.
Therefore I cannot even update to current anything and what makes it worse is that CWM Recovery has gone. I found this great for Backing Up my phone and Restoring it after trying out Custom Roms.
Anyway, if any one can help me in any way possible and/or point me in the right direction, I would be most greatful.
Please help, if you can.

At the moment, I cannot change these because of what I've mentioned in my original post.

Make a goldcard (search on google) and the you will be able to install any ruu with a software number higher than yours.

I cannot create a Goldcard.
I've searched and tried some methods and also looked at some videos too.
I just cannot get the methods to work for me.
I've been trying for a long time to create a Goldcard, about a six months. I get so frustrated I give up.
Can you suggest a particular method that you know works?.

Could you post the method you used and where you get an error?

SimpleGoldCard,
Step 3 Get CID. I chose MMC0, MMC1 and MMC2. No joy.
Unlockr Method.
Cannot get the CID code to reverse. It just doesn't want to know.

There's an app on the market called goldcard helper. Try that.

Thank you.
Tried it and managed to create the Goldcard.
I placed the Goldcard in my phone, tried to update the rom via RUU 2.13.401.2 and went upto 19% complete and then I received an ERROR 171 failed connection.
Basically I'm back to square one again.
I just do not know what else to try.
I am still searching for solutions but with no luck.

You used the goldcard.img file with the simple goldcard tool right ?
Open simple goldcard tool on your computer, skip the steps which are for the cid, click load goldcard img, navigate to the downloaded img, then click patch mmc, (i dont remember the exact process). Then your goldcard is ready.

I've done all that already and got the message "SD Card is now a Goldcard" or something like that.
As I said, back to square one.

There's a tutorial somewhere for that error in the general section. Search for it.

Does anyone have any other ideas, please.
I'm getting desperate trying to find a solution.

I know it's been a few months now but I still have the same issue.
Unfortunately no one has really replied with the same or similar issue.
If anyone out there has any other ideas, please let me know. I would love to update my phone.
Thank you.

Bricked Desire?! :(

Hey guys I'm really desperate right now...
I don't know what to to, I can't boot my Desire, I can't get into recovery, just fastboot is working. I'm always stuck on the splashscreen.
To begin with the story, I rooted my Desire months ago, flashed a new rom from time to time and everything worked fine. So yesterday I wanted to try out RCMix S CM7 where the FAQ said i need S-OFF.
So this also worked quite fine. But then I got problems partitioning my SDCard (dont know what why or so, my Desire didnt recognize it anymore)
Today I tried again but I made it even worse, now I can't boot my Rom anymore and I can't get into Recovery. So what should I do? I searched the internet for hours now and tried nearly everything.
I tried to flash an official RUU, in fact this one: RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.29.405.5_Radio_32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27_release_159811_signed.exe
Becaus the others were too "old". But when I tried starting this one it couldnt detect my desire. USB connecion error.
But still it seems it flashed a new hboot because now I am S-ON again.
Then I tried to flash a Stock ROM via fastboot, which first failed because it wasn't signed and the second one failed because android-info.txt and android-product.txt were missing.
I tried to flash the recovery again but it's still stuck on the splashcreen.
I don't know what to do anymore... could you PLS help me? Or is my Desire now bricked??
What can I do, or try...?
greets patrick

If fastboot is working you should be pretty much safe. It seems like you got an usb brick. Try this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=691187
My Suggestion ... Create a Goldcard beofre doing anything.. once done you can put PB99IMG.zip into ur SD card and it will flash automatic once you goto fastboot... but Goldcard is a must for this.. if you dont knw search how to create goldcard.
For Goldcard

Pat, is your phone branded ?
Flash the correct RUU for your phone (one that came with your phone originally), it does not really matter how old it is. after you done that your should get back to stock you can re-root it and then load the firmware you want.
if you don't know what your phone came with originally. then you will need a goldcard to get back to stock
@paul.c: nope it isn't branded
@dennis.l: I can't! I tried some of this list: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695667
The old ones with 1.15 and 1.21 started, but didn't work because it said they are too old or something like that.
RUU_Bravo_HTC_WWE_1.15.405.4_Radio_32.30.00.28U_4. 05.00.11_release_122704.exe
RUU_Bravo_HTC_WWE_1.21.405.2_Radio_32.36.00.28U_4. 06.00.02_2_release_126984_signed.exe
Then I tried the newer one with FroYo, but this one throw and error saying it can't even find or connect to my phone.
RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.29.405.5_Radio_32.49.00. 32U_5.11.05.27_release
So what I've read so far I definitely need a goldcard right?
But all those manuals say I have to boot up and activate USB Debugging Mode... but I cant boot up a rom. The only thing that is working right now is fastboot.
Is it possible to make a goldcard without booting up? Or do I have to get a working Desire to make the goldcard?
I haven't got a cardreader either but seems I've got to get one.
Right now I'm not at home so can just try it in the evening.

You don't need goldcard for unbranded phones.
Even Unbranded phone requires goldcard to be able to flash any RUU...
So I prefer you create goldcard.. and yehs you can create goldcard without booting..
If you have anyone with android mobile.. goto market and search for goldcard helper.. and insert you memory card in that phone.. and run the goldcard helper.. it will give you the reverse CID .. whcih you can use to create goldcard... but you will require a card reader for sure..... just try your luck with your current phone.. just plug in the phone and run the Goldcard tool.. and check if your phone is detecting
THANK YOU GUYS SO MUCH!!
You saved my life! xD
I made a goldcard as you said with the help of a friend and his desire. Then I put it my phone and suddenly I could flash the newest Stock ROM
RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.29.405.5_Radio_32.49.00. 32U_5.11.05.27_release
So everything went great, I've got root again, a working stock rom and I'm able to start recovery mode again.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

Anytime Bro
I recently experienced a similar problem. And all the stuff you described wrong with your phone is the same on mine.
What I want to know is how to get back to stock and all that? A step by step guide would be very much apreciated..
I tried following this guide:http: //forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=691639
but as I try to enable my sdcard it get an error:
"The program can't start because AdbWinApi.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem".
I recently installed the JDK and just downloaded the newest android SDK to work with.
Besides I'm considering whether I'm doing this right. I do have to use the CMDprompt right? and direct it to my androidsdk/tools directory?
I'm pretty much new to messing around with my phone through the CMD though. Please be gentle when you describe any methods that might work..?
Regards,
Me

Adbwinapi.dll was moved to the platform-tools dir in the android sdk and the sdk path in Windows hasn't be updated. In win xp right click my computer, go to system then click the system variables button. Find "path" and change it to point in to the "platform-tools" folder... Note I'm not at my pc so I can't remember 100% what tab the system variables button is on

hi,
rage is right, better declare environnement variable, right click comupter - select properties - windows select advanced and you should see variable environnement. just add the path where adb is installed... mine is the following defaut path(C:\Program Files\Android\android-sdk-windows\tools) + (C:\Program Files\Android\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools) should add the in the user environ... name = path variable= the 2 path separated by a ;
Well I got desperate and I think that I've totally bricked my phone. I was going to a family arrangement and I didn't know the way so I was hoping that flashing the original RUU, would make me able to use the phone and the navigation in it, while starting the phone in fastboot would help. Seems it didn't. The RUU I tried to install seems it was a wrong one (here to say that I tried flashing it through the installer on my pc), but this was stated pretty late in the installation process.. where the guide told me to install a proper one.
My phone is now totally unresponsive. It won't even charge. When I hold the power button it just vibrates once and then nothing else happens.
Is it bricked? If so, does anyone know what my chances are with my warranty? Now that I've had it rooted and stuff, does my warrenty then expire and can they "track" the rooting part if I hand in it to their support?
Best of regards,
Me.

only guessing but if NOTHING turns on or boots, as in you just see a black screen then there is not going to be a way for any one to know the phone was rooted
try taking it back on warranty
I thought the same thing myself. Since it's unable to boot into the "recovery" menu by holding down "power + volume down" I guess it's not rooted anymore anyhow. During the RUU installation I noticed that it was installing a new "image-something" which I'm guessing means that it was writing over the root and recovery after which the installation failed.
Anyhow I'll try that and hope for the best. Thanks

Are you able to recognise the phone in adb at all?
From what I know it's very rare to completely brick unless you are flashing hboots or radios.

[Q] Bricked after OTA update failed

Hi I've been searching for days and have always been able to find answers but this one has got me.
My gf has a HTC Desire HD, pretty sure it's Vodafone since she works there. Tried to do a normal update a while ago and it never started since, just sits on the HTC logo. I can boot into fastboot hboot recovery and all that but I'm stuck as to what to do from here.
I have found a couple of WWE RUU's but the error out with a CID error, I've also found a Vodafone backup someone took from clockwork but this phone only has stock recovery and I don't know how to flash clockwork without being able to boot the phone.
Hoping someone might have an easy answer, please let me know if I need to provide more details.
Thanks.
If its rooted just place a rom on the sd and flash it with full wipe. You are not suppose to accept OTA updates if the phone is rooted if Im not mistaken. If not rooted then go to HTC websight and get the official RUU and install, instructions should be on websight.

Get me the CID and Iwill provide u with a ruu that works...VODAFONE from where? not all ruu's are available, but at least we can find one that makes your phone back to work...:good:
Unfortuanately it isn't rooted, I probably would've had more luck by now if it was.
I can't see the CID on the bootloader is there a command on fastboot or something to find this? I've been searching but can't find anything.
Sorry I thought of that afterwards, it's Vodafone Australia.
Thanks for the replies guys!
I just tried that European RUU thought I didn't have anything to loose but it came back with ERROR 132 Signature Error.
The Australian HTC site doesn't have a RUU to download that I can see.

yep, do the following: boot in hboot and choose fastboot. Then plug the phone (check that you see fastboot usb in red)
Open cmd as admin or a terminal as root and then, type fastboot getvar all. Get the INFOcidnum and paste it here. With that I will try to find a ruu that works. But stop trying flashing other things...you might mess the device.
Hi
Thanks again for the help. The cidnum: VODAP021
Hope this helps, I haven't checked out those other links yet though.

Solution!!
Ok firstly sorry it's taken me ages to post this but I finally came up with a solution to this problem using a few different guides and instructions on these forums.
So the problem was I had a Vodafone AU branded HTC Desire HD that had no root and a locked bootloader that was stuck in a bootloop after a failed official update. The main problem is that there is NO stock recovery ROM ANYWHERE for a Vodafone AU HTC Desire HD, trust me I looked and I am not new to looking for stuff like this. glevitan provided me with a WW ROM that I managed to get working with a bit of work, there are also many WW ROM's around that you should also be able to use. I'll try to explain as best I can as to how I got it to work (going from memory) so if anyone else has a similar problem they may be able to use this information.
1. Firstly find a suitable WW ROM to flash, it needs to be a PD98IMG.zip image to copy to an SD card. There is a Vodafone AU dump on this forum but that will not work if you are completely stock standard. I think you can get this zip from the RUU or maybe ask glevitan if he wouldn't mind helping in providing this again. I didn't want to link to his file but there are others around.
2. Create a goldcard. If you turn your SD card into a goldcard it will allow any ROM to be flashed, normally it would only accept the Vodafone AU one but by doing this it will accept the WW one. To do this I used a second phone to create the card.
I used the Ultimate multi tool which can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1180639
You may have to do a bit of reading on getting it to work, from memory you have to put in a number to a website to generate a file, I think I ended up using a different website, there's a few options in getting this done, google is your friend for this
3. Once the goldcard is created copy the PD98IMG.zip to the root directory and put it back into the phone.
4. Turn on the phone and boot to hboot by holding vol up (I think) on power on. The phone should automatically check for a suitable PD98IMG.zip file and as long as the goldcard process worked and you have a suitable ROM on the root directory it should flash it fine.
This is basically what I did and it successfully booted after a lot of looking around. I hope this helps people in the future with similar problems. If you need to ask any questions about this process as I haven't provided every single detail please feel free to contact me and I will do my best to help you out.
Thanks again to glevitan for helping and providing a suitable ROM to flash.

[Q] Problems with installing blackout ics ROM Desire HD

So I decided to root my android desire hd phone and avail the benefits of blackout ics rom on my phone.
This is how I approached.
I unlocked the bootloader from HTC Dev.
I have the adb with me, adb devices, adb restart bootloader are working absolutely fine and cell phone was detectable.
I downloaded the aahk and blackout rom from xda forums.
But I am not able to use the aahk properly. It says in instruction to do a fastboot flash boot boot.img from command prompt with the source being the place where aahk is placed on the PC. But it still doesn't work, and probably this is the root cause of the issues I am facing.
I tried downloading the CWM to boot into recovery, but that also gave me an error stating cannot find the adbwinapi.dll file.
So after that, I did a factory reset of my cellphone and truly I got my first success and I was able to get into the bootloader and recovery.
I can reach to the bootloader screen (white screen+3 andro dummies), but when I select the fastboot option It says cannot find image(which image, is it referring to boot.img). I deleted the cache on my cell phone, but again things are pending from here on.
The description on this screen says S-ON and some other things. Does that mean the security is still on?
I have the rom loaded on the sd card with renamed to update.zip, but when I select update option from the recovery it again says cannot find image, rebooting!(what image this is referring to).
And after all this sequence I am down with a cellphone now degraded to froyo from ginger bread and back to stone age!
Please advise.

You have not done anything fine...anything at all. My advice is that you'd better start reading hard buddy or you will end up with a 300 bucks paperweight.
Use the guide in my signature to start.
Tip 1:If you really downgrade to froyo and you were running gingerbread, you might have messed the bootloader..can you boot in hboot in normal times or takes ages?
Tip 2:The Hack Kit can not be run with an unlocked bootloader...that is what the manual says. The manual is there just to avoid this.
If your bootloader is still unlocked, then you have to install CWM recovery, put the rom in the sdcard (no rename is necessary) and then flash the boot.img from where that file is located (I usually put in the PC desktop) and not from the Hack Kit folder.
Then, from CWM flash the rom normally and you will be up and running.
Unlocking the bootloader will not give you S-OFF....

I had this tutorial open side by side in your signature while I was doing it. (the noob one)
I can go into Hboot normal times.
I am writing it down here from the main website from where I downloaded the aahk. And it says
Unlock the bootloader using the HTC DEV bootloader unlock process.
Download att-ace-30-isboot.zip and unzip it (don’t forget to check MD5)
fastboot flash boot boot.img
relock bootloader
But just now you told me that it should not be run on an unlocked bootloader! I am a little confused.

Yeah, but also says this: "...No Temproot for Inspire Build 3.20.502.52..." But you have a Desire HD, haven't you? And your build is not that one, is it?

Yeah.
I think i found the answers I was looking for and since I used the bugger HTC dev unlocker (which I shouldn't have used), I have to come down a step and start over again.

No problem. Get a working phone and then you can try to run the Hack Kit...but it has to be stock or otherwise will not work. :good:

I am not sure if you are on right now, but i am giving a try to the steps mentioned by that gentlemen above in the link.
the phone is now stuck at signature verification. I reasearched for it but could not find a viable solution or an exploit that can overcome it(though everyone seems to be suggesting to install CWM recovery)
Not taking any chances to convert my phone into a brick! Whats the best way.

I am following the steps sequentially as mentioned in that link by sashank. The bootloader is partially unlocked due to the HTCDEV process.
Couple of other things that I noticed. The android version is still at 2.3.5 however the device was shipped with Froyo. My mistake to have said that it is downgraded to froyo when I did the factory reset.
The facebook for HTC Sense thing is jacked up big time, I cannot find that in peoples app.
The device has (believe me) gained speed. pretty strange.
Once I reach home 3 hours from now, i'll update this thread and we can connect through Teamviewer so that you can have a look.hope thats cool!
Thanks

Fogot to unlock phone before installing cyanogenmod

I have an Desire Bravo.
I used AlphaRev to S-OFF and Unrevoked to root the phone.
I then installed Cyanogenmod 7
All went OK until I realised that the phone was locked to Orange.
I've tried just about everything I can find on the net.
Here are the details when I boot up:
BRAVO PVY4 SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT 0.93.0001
MICROP 051d
Radio 5.17.05.23
Things I have tried.
Updated radio to above.
Flash PB99IMG and PB99IMG_cm7r2
Get CID incorrect
Installed HTC Sync and ran RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.29.405.5_Radio_32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27_release_159811_signed.exe
(not sure if this works with S-OFF)
HTC Sync and the RUU do not see the phone.
Any ideas?
TIA
Wait, so what are you trying to do? Flash a RUU?
To flash a RUU, you either use a goldcard, or install the 2.3 RUU, which is unbranded.
Or are you trying to unlock your phone? Here:

I paid for an unlock code in the hope that it might work. I can enter the code, which is accepted, but this happens each time the phone is started. And no network available.
I tried the unlock method you mentioned but I get an error when running it. Sieempi has not replied to my request for help, so I think this a a deadend.
The idea is to get the phone back to a stock rom so that I can unlock the phone using the code I purchased.
I didn't think you could make a goldcard for a phone that is running cyanogenmod. Is that true? A link would be appreciated.
Is the RUU I tried unbranded? Where can I get the 2.3 RUU for my phone? OK found the location if this. I'll give it a try.
Thanks very much for the quick reply.
I've downloaded 2.3 RUU but cannot install kernel manager on the phone because I don't have access to the market.
Can't find where to get APK from without having to install crapware.
I've installed kernel manager on my other phone but can't find the apk file. Dev Tools says it's in /data/data but that is just an xml file
Something is conspiring against me

I'm working on getting stock back.
Strangely, the 2.3 RUU program is now recognising the phone, whereas it didn't before. Just waiting for phone to charge up to install it.
UPDATE: Finally got stock rom back. Looked like magic when the HTC logo appeared. And the unlock code I bought worked too. Now I am going to install Cyanogenmod all over again. I'll reply when I have it all working. I'm still not sure why the previous RUU and HTC Sync didn't recognise the phone earlier.
Thanks for the help!

OK, so I have the 2,3 RUU stock rom working. But Unrevoked 3.32 latest version gives me an error: firmware too new.
I don't think this happened before.
I've looked at quite a few posts to solve this but have not managed to yet.
Use revolutionary.

OK trying to do that now.
UPDATE: Revolutionary worked inasmuch as it gives me root access.
I then used CWM to flash cyanogenmod, as before (the same file). But every time I start the phone, the cyanogen welcome screen keeps refreshing every 3 or 4 seconds.
FINAL UPDATE: forgot to clear cache and wipe memory first. Duh!
Once simple mistake (not unlocking phone before rooting) and many hours later ...
Thanks once again. Everything working. Nice to have a backup phone.

Just one last problem that I didn't spot.
I flashed the latest gapps in Recovery but I cannot see any new app
SOLVED this problem. I was using the newtalk version of gapps. This doesn't work. Use the other version here:
http://goo.im/gapps/gapps-gb-20110828-signed.zip

Cannot access recover mode

So I've been trying to root my dads old Desire for a while now, with no success - it is locked to o2 and I'm on Orange. I didn't really want to pay to unlock it, and rooting it would have been nice. I've done two phones before, so I figured it shouldn't be too bad. Eventually I discovered it was HBOOT 1.03, and this was the problem, so the solution was to backdate the software to an earlier version (the phone is still S-ON and I cannot get this thing to take ANYTHING)
I was trying to roll back from Froyo to 2.1.
The current problem is that now the phone will not boot. With a simple turn-on it just sits at the white HTC screen, or if you go into Hboot it tries (what I assume is) 'fastboot' and checks the PB99IMG.zip file on the SD card. If I say I don't want to update and go to 'recovery' it loads the screen with the exclamation mark in a triangle in it. The problem here is that pressing up+power does nothing. I've tried a quick press, and a long hold multiple times, and with no result except the first time. Unfortunately I didn't go through the proceedure the first time, assuming it'd work again. Damn!
If I start the update it says 'can not roll back the hboot version'. It also fails on the radio_v2.
Any help will be much appreciated, and if you need any details (I've probably missed something) please ask!
Thanks

If it fails with Radio_v2, then it's a radio brick, and that's the reason it won't boot. I'm afraid you can't do much, due to the hboot version.

I'm not too worried about getting a different rom on it, or rooting it or anything any more, currently I'd like to just put it back into a working state, as it was, probably locked to o2, if you've any suggestions on how to do that?

The one step here I'm halted by is producing a Goldcard - the link to the website on the tool doesn't work any more (I've scoured t'internet, and that's the general consensus). Any idea where else I can input the CID to get a Goldcard Image?
Also how do I run the RUU on my computer? What file is it in the HTC Desire Android Upgrade folder I need to run? Afterall, there's no file titled 'RUU.exe'
Thanks

Just realized that it wouldn't work, because you have to boot your phone for the downgrader tool.
You could try something else. Unlock your bootloader using the HTC Dev site :http://www.htcdev.com/bootloader, and then try installing a custom recovery.

I've unlocked the bootloader (although obviously I'm still S-ON and HBOOT 1.03), so how would I go about installing a custom recovery?
Everything I can find online implies I need to do it starting with the phone up and running...

You extract the recovery.img from it.
You then use fastboot to flash it:

That worked spot on! Have you got anything you'd recommend I put on there now? (factory reset didn't do anything, didn't really expect it to)
I tried cyangenmod7 for the desire, but with no luck. File 'BAD' or somethign when tried to read it from the SD card.

So, that's on and working, but it's still locked to the carrier, o2. I've just tried 'HTC Desire unlock v0.9.5' but that didn't work (despite the program telling me it went flawlessly).
Any more suggestions?
