Hello people,
In the past I had a HTC Magic and a Samsung Galaxy S, and both increased a lot the performance with custom kernels/ROMS, and for me the best was cyanogenmod.
I want to know if installing ROMS or kernels on the GN also increases the performance, or only adds functionality.
In that case, which ROM/kernel or both would yo recommend me?
Yes.
Find one you like though.
I can't recommend.
Kernel:
Franco's: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1367341
ROM:
AOKP31 (GSM device): http://rootzwiki.com/topic/11455-aokp-maguro-april-8-build-31-404/
AOKP31 (CDMA device): http://rootzwiki.com/topic/19302-aokp-toro-april-8-build-31-404/
Just my recommendations. Of course others will disagree or recommend something else but this is an amazing combo.

Perfomance-wise, I'd say the kernel helped greatly in increasing my battery life.
Otherwise, the ROM is mainly for customisations such as reducing the soft key height, toggles, etc.

custom ROM has plenty of nice feature but i did not find a sinlge one that works properly:
Just to notice a couple of things:
Bluetooth: Only the stock rom allowed me to connect 2 BT headset (One with the "no phone audio") option, very usefull
GPS: not a sinlge custom rom i tried allow me to get GPS sat under 0-15 seconds, only the stock rom allows this.
Again this is my experience only.
Custom ROM has great function like battery stat, STAY AWAKE and more that i need but right now i am purely stock until i get bored i guess...
Just my 2 cents, of course

1. ROM is like the looks and all the little extra stuff of a car. Some devs may decide to put some aftermarket parts on it to make it look cooler, and function differently.
(overall looks and the stuff you use everyday)
KERNEL is like the ENGINE and ECU component of the car, it controls how the car functions.. the smoothness, the strength, the clockspeed. There are plenty of v6 engines in the world, but do they all work the same? nope. Some are tweaked to work best for certain CARS/ROMS.
(OMGAH ROM SO SMOOF SUBER BADDERY LIFE... KERNEL)
well thats the basic breakdown of it.
2. Each device works is different... some kernels/ROMs combo works differently on each phone...
But I have to say.. the devs we have here are all top-notched devs.. you can't go wrong following any of them. USUALLY the devs will leave all the features that are widely used by people and add other perks to the ROMs... sooo Just go flash crazy..
remember kernels and battery life needs a couple days to calibrate with one another.
BTW I find it useful to just stick with one or two devs you can devote your phone to, and just use their stuff.
Hello xda-developers.
My name's Mirko and I from Italy. It's my first time that I post in this beautiful forum of all kind of developers
I have Galaxy Nexus (GSM. Italian version) with Android 4.1.1 stock. My small questions are:
- I suffer from short battery life, it's better change kernel or ROM?
- If it's better change kernel, what you can recommend to me and why?
- If it's better change ROM, what you can recommend to me and why?
At the moment only these are my questions.
Thanks for all answer.. It's my first time that I unlock bootloader and root my device (I have to do it), and I'm a full newbie of modding
Thanks thanks and thanks, this forum is the best.. Keep on the fantastic work and congratulation to all modder, staff and all!
P.s. sorry for my bad english
Best Regards.

Before you do any of the stated you need to find out weather your phone is gsm or cdma because you CANNOT put a CDMA on a GSM phone or the other way around.
Kernels affect battery life. I recommend Franco kernel or Lean kernel
Roms affect user interface (the OS operating System on the phone) - I recommend for a starting stable rom Cyanogen (its what MOST roms are based off of) then if you want to tweak your phone more I recommend CodeNamedDroid or ParanoidAndroid. (these are the three that I use the most)
also i would recommend this thread about battery life http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1599025
i hope my english has not confused you. Dont be surprised if noone else responds to you in this page, they have a bad habit of doing this.

Hey Weapondrift, I realize that maybe my Galaxy Nexus is GSM.
I give a watch to Franco kernel or Lean kernel but all say it's better both.. Don't know what the difference before start my first flash.
Thanks for roms..
What do you think? It's ok only kernel or it's better change rom?
Thanks for battery life thread, I'll follow
No no, your english won't confuse me.. I can understand but I have problem with speak to other

Franco's has horrible battery life...
paranoidandroid with trinity is the best imo
Yes, custom kernels can improve battery life if you're willing to trade in a little performance. Can't have both at the same time.

Hi Guys , I was running stock ROM on my nexus , but was irritated cuz the lack of some toggles like auto rotation and data on/off so i decided to get custom ROM.
So i tried few but either they're buggy or the battery runs out too quickly ...
So my question to you guys is: what's the best ROM whit best performance and battery ?
Performance will always come at a cost.
Sent from my i9250
always has and always will...
So what are you suggesting ?
I was thinking of trying CM whit Franco kernel ...
there is no best, they are all good. they all are about equal in battery and performance. best is what fits your needs. everyone will always post what they are currently using as the best, no one wants to say they use the worst.

Bottom line is it comes down to the developer. How much customization.... How much Bloat... How minimal (generally smooth and buttery)... and etc. Flash them all
Hi guys!
I've been playing around with my GNex (GSM, stock 1750mAh battery) since last july and my biggest concern is (still) the battery life.
I've noticed that the couple stock rom + stock kernel (the ones the phone come with) is much better than any other custom rom+kernel.
Here comes my (maybe stupid) question: is the battery life somewhat related to the (de)odexed status of the rom?
I mean, I've been looking for all kinds of solutions to take advantage of those features offered by AOKP or PA without suffering from BL issues, but I find silly to sacrifice stability/smoothness/responsiveness/always-on-connection/brightness/whatsoever to gain not that many mins of juice. And I really wonder what is the sourcery Google adopts to make its roms so stable, responsive and battery friendly (e.g. no custom rom/kernel can achieve as much BL as the stock ones). Put differently, with the stock rom/kernel, I can leave 3G always on, auto-sync always on, haptic feedbacks on, location services always on (but GPS) and the battery survives for more than 24h; while, with custom roms/kernels, I could switch everything in the list off and still the battery wouldn't last that long (ceteris paribus).
Could you, please, explain me how it works?
Is there really no way to improve BL other than those listed above?
And, finally, does odexing the system apps (on custom roms) do the trick?
Cheers!
P.s.: the answers I'm looking for may already be in other threads.
If so, I apologize, but I tried googling different keywords many times, and got no interesting results.
For me the biggest source of battery drain is the screen by far. Maybe you enjoy custom ROMs more than the stock one and you keep the screen on more I would think that a custom ROM would be more battery friendly. Which ROMs have you tried?

Lol, maybe you're right!
Until now, I tried AOKP and PA roms and franco, AirKernel, GlaDOS and stock kernels (all possible combinations). I found that PA and GlaDOS are the best custom couple, but still not comparable with the factory ones.
However, even tough I have no technical numbers, the usage on custom stuff had been more or less the same as on stock things (although I became a pie-control addict). And what I know for sure, the BL gap is mostly due to screen (i.e. by staring at the launcher home screen for 5 minutes, the battery drains faster with custom roms than with stock roms - still, ceteris paribus).

I know that's strange. Things used to work as you say with my HTC Desire. But since I've switched to the Nexus S (and then to the GNex), I strongly preferred stock stuff just because of battery life

Hi!
Do you know what ROM is the fastest (with better performance) for our Nexus? I don't care if it is Stock or Custom, all I want is the better performance/battery life rom possible.
I am now with CM11 unoficial by playfulgod and I like it because it is 4.4, but the phone takes too long to open the apps and lags a little bit in fast transactions....
EDIT: I also don't care about the version, 4.4, 4.3, 4.2, 4.1, anything... the changes are minimal from 4.1 to 4.3 and 4.4 has its pros and cons
Flash and find out. Thats your best option.
Edit: Wrong section. Sorry. How the h*ll did i end up in Galaxy Nexus section.
I'm using CM official nightlies and find it quite good. I found 4.3 faster but like others have said it's a case of trying different rom / kernel combinations. What works well for me night not be much good for you and vice versa. A lot of different factors come into play. Apps used, background apps etc.

all roms give the fastest and good performance.. its all depend on you.
so far after 1 week experiments.
i use gnex + extended battery + slimkat 4.4.1 + A.S.K.P kernel + odexed + run perfomance scripts + tweak build prop = superb. already 4 hour screen on... with over 50% balance battery..

I have just flashed Gummy's 4.4 rom just trying it out from BelieveRom. I was looking for something faster with some of the new features and this had most of them. Real smooth so far with steady battery use on stock kernel. Will try some other kernels to see if it will add the butter.
I'm running swordrune10's cm11 its pretty good

Care to lay out all the tweaked build prop, performance scripts? How big is this extended battery? Is it the one from Verizon that Samsung made or is it one of those big 3,000+ sized ones that makes the phone super thick? seeing 4 hours of screen on time and only half battery used seems too good to be true.
thanks guys!
I will try a few roms here and give you the feedback later
The performance were only good on 4.1.2

im use the super big extended battery.. 4000 mah.. its big but worth it.
i dont like to use power bank as alternative.
im using pure performance™ scripts.. but carefull in scripting, it may cause overwrite the existing build.prop.
additional of using performance control. apk> download from fdroid repo. its seem to be easy to use for tweaking ram performance. especially for noob likes me.
sorry for my bad english..

Thats pretty nice. It seems way big for me though. I'm not a make the phones a slim as you can kind of person, but i do like a happy medium.
Vanir is pretty smooth and fast. Battery isn't greatest but performance kicks ass on my toro. 4.4 flies but still has black boxes
Yes, Vanir is very smooth. But the most important is to install custom kernel. For now the best are ASKP and Mpokang SuperRAM. If you install one of these kernels, i think every ROM will be smooth.
I suggest to try MetalOmni - very fast 4.4 ROM.
ITS ALL YOUR OPINION. FLASH AND FIND OUT. These threads arent even allowed. And on top of that: how would you feel if you had put alot of effort into making a ROM and people dont like it because its "slow". Just try and find out seriously. Youre maybe the 100th with this thread. This will probably be closed in a couple of days.

well, then I will have to flash all the roms there are to see for myself which one is the best in terms of speed. considering that there are at least 5 different roms just for 4.4 and for 4.3 (and previous) there are much more roms... I would need to flash about 20 roms (or more) and test them at least a day or two to see which ones are better... By my calculations, I will need at least 1 month. Considering that android isn't my life, I have many other things more important to do, I will spend more than a month doing that testing thing...
So, do you really think I can test them all for myself? Shouldn't I ask here for names of the best roms in terms of speed that many members have tested? This way I will only test the 3/4 most mentioned, not the all 20. I know that the developers do a lot of work in their roms, but there are ones better than others for many things, I don't think the developer of rom X would mind if I prefer the rom Y from other developer because it is faster. Maybe the rom X has more options and other things, but lacks in speed, so the developer of rom X isn't interested in making a rom for speed, it isn't inferior to the other rom, just different.
If this thread is locked, even finding it unfair and kind of stupid, I don't really care. I already got a few opinions and I'm testing some roms here. Thanks a lot for the ones who helped me and aswered this thread.

Well, you got me curious.
I am currently testing SlimKat ROM and it looks fast enough for me.
Unfortunaly, it's still on beta (4.4 KitKat), so you might expect a few bugs.
Still, it's a good ROM, in my opinion.
