I first bought the Samsung brand MHL adapter, and the moment i plugged it into the phone, it simply reboot without displaying anything on the TV. I figured it might be the adapter, so I returned it and bought a 3rd party Menotek adapter only to find the same problem.
The power cable is connected to the adapter, and the adapter to the phone and HDMI cable. I even tried a different power cable, and wall charger and same problem occurs.
Is this a problem with anyone else, one that has a fix? If not I might have to exchange my phone, since this is a feature I really wanted.
Could it be perhaps that the Docomo (Japanese) version uses different electric current that it has to convert, but the adapter can't convert?
i have the exact same problem.
at first i thought it was the cable, so i exchanged for another one... it rebooted.
then i thought maybe it's the tv, so i tried a friend's tv... it rebooted as well.
so i figured it must be the phone. but then since everything else was working perfectly on my phone, i couldn't be bothered to go exchange it... i thought i'd hardly use the mhl if at all. guess you should go exchange yours while you still can though.
I'll contact newegg about it, see if I can get a hassle free exchange.
My biggest guess is that is has something to do with the 110v/220v electrical current that it either doesn't receive enough, or too much, causing it to restart.
I am not sure what a good solution is. At least I am not the only one.
hmm i doubt it's got anything to do with electric currents.
it's my understanding that standard usb power is 5v.
anyways japan uses 110v same as US, and i'm in asia 220v and we're having the same problem.
I had same problem as this but the jelly bean update fixed it....

110/220 is AC, which is converted to DC before it even gets to the usb cord, let alone to the phone. Most chargers will support 110 & 220, so there shouldn't be any issue there.
Are you rooted? Have you tried any other ROMs?

I9250 suffers from defect as well
I have problem. Using i9250 original international version. MHL worked once upon a time, jelly bean didn't fix it, started in 4.0.4, last worked in 4.0.2, dont care about downgrading just to examine, but going back to stock 4.0.1 or 4.0.2 might fix it

hi.
i just got a MHL cable for my SGS2
when i plugged it to my tv, it cuts of the wifi and the phone signal... so i can't receive calls or surf the internet ...
i tried two different phones with different roms and different kernels and got the same result...
anyone had this problem and knows how to use MHL and have WIFI and phone signal?
thanks
What cable? Samsung's or generic?
Have you tried this on stock unrooted or rooted firmware?

i tried custom roms...
one of them is 2.3.5 and the other one is 2.3.4
the two devices are rooted
I have the OEM Samsung adapter and it used to make my phone do the same thing. I sold the phone ans ended up buying another one and the second phone works perfect with it.
I am running the leomar75 rom with the ragemod 1.1b kernel
so you say this is a problem with the device itself?
I also have a generic adapter but mine works for a few seconds and then blank.....not supported. sometimes it gives green screen on my tv. I've tried on stock and custom roms. If it's the phone than it should be addressed t Samsung.
update:
I have to put my phone in offline mode to be able to use it.....
i tried the same cable on other tv...
on the other tv the phone signal stayed on (and i even received a call without any problem) but i still had no WIFI...
maybe its important, but i tried the other tv away from home..
at my home the phone signal is weak all the time
i have a stock phone w/ generic POWERED mhl cable and the wifi cuts off when plugged in. wth?
still no fix for this issue?? i just got a MHL cable yesterday and is really annoying
I called samsung and they said that it is designed to cut off wifi. it may look like u r still connected, but u will be unable to surf the net. they said the reason this was done was to prevent fickering of the video if you were browsing the net or something.
so ,there's no hope than MHL work with wifi?

dont ask me. call samsung. just telling u what they told me. the way it is designed wifi is shut off when mhl cables are used.
would be interesting to see if anyone got wifi to work w/ mhl plugged in.

I have had WIFI working with MHL connected for months. I've could surf the web AND stream flash videos in a room with GPRS coverage ONLY (which rules out the "you were surfing through packet data" variable) while connected to my Samsung HD plasma with no problems.
So I certainly have no idea what your Sammy rep was talking about.
BTW, I'm using the official, korean spec MHL cables I got from ExportPrive. But I'm positive it should work the same with the international MHL cables.
Bought a non Samsung MHL cable today and it worked perfectly fine, it even worked when providing power via a microUSB cable connected from a spare USB socket in my nearby router.
Another user on a forum I frequent has similar issues with WiFi dropping and had this solution:

My MHL problem is fixed now, i tested it for 15 minutes and wifi and gsm signal were fine
I was just about to post it in this thread and then saw your post haha
IF anyone decides to mess about with chargers/adapters with higher currents then do it at your own risk and read up if its ok to do so with your phone etc..!

Rom/kernel issue?
I'm using a Nokia AC10X (1200ma charger) + original MHL cable + Siyah 2.1rc2 (at that time, now running 2.1.1) + VR2.4.2 (don't ask) = no connection issues what so ever while in HDMI out.
Either that or it's a hardware problem with the cable or your phone.

Hello!
First things first: i already googled and search-functioned about 8 hours for solutions, tried them all and still got no luck so basically you girls and guys are my last hope. i hope my english isnt as rusty as i think it is. if i make any mistakes of any kind, please bear with them.
Used Hardware: Galaxy Nexus, the original Samsung OTG cable and the original Samsung charger
Software: Rooted, Bootloader-unlocked, stock-Android 4.0.4, 4.1.1 and 4.1.2
What is my problem?
as soon as i plug in the original charger it charges (duh!)
however, the moment i unplug it, the phone keeps thinking it is being charged. forever!
plugging in a original samsung USB cable without connecting it to something doesnt help, it still thinks of being charged.
but plugging in the original OTG cable stops the phone from thinking of being charged! (i dislike the thought of running around with a OTG dangling around the phone so that isnt a solution to me )
what happened before that incident?
bought on 15th December 2011
last software update 4.1.1 to 4.1.2 on 16.10.2012
worked perfectly until Yesterday
Recently i played around with the OTG cable and tried the following hardware to see wich works with my setup:
external HDD - NTFS formattet
PS3 Sixaxis controller
Corsair Flash Voyager USB3.0 Stick
AKAI MPK mini USB MIDI controller
Newest apps installed:
Sixaxis Compatibility Checker (18.10.2012 installed, used for half an hour and deinstalled)
Wolfram Alpha (17.10.2012 installed)
MyBoy (an GBA emulator - 12.9.2012 installed)
-latest ROM for that emulator downloaded on 13.9.2012
what did i try to fix the problem (in exact order)?
rebooting
changing the battery from 2000mAh (its an original, bought about half a year ago) to stock 1750mAh
removing the battery for 10 minutes
draining the battery to absolute zero and fully recharge it
carefully cleaning the microUSB port (with battery remover of course)
super carefully bending up the thounge-like part inside the microUSB port so that it doesnt get in contact with any surrounding metal parts (battery removed of course. when i say super carefully, i mean super duper carefully! i know how fragile those parts are!)
trying to hard reset the phone (that was a failure i just got from fastboot mode to a droid with a red triangle and an exclamation mark on its open stomach)
factory resetting the 4.1.2 via factory reset option (backup with Titanium Backup was made correctly but i forgot to copy it from droid to PC :silly: )
wiping the cache via fastboot
quick reflashing the 4.1.2 via fastboot
quick downgrading back from 4.1.2 to 4.1.1
quick downgrading back from 4.1.1 to 4.0.4
quick upgrading to 4.1.1 (it still is in that state)
complete reflashing the 4.1.1
- with reflashing bootloader
- with reflashing radio
- with reflashing recovery partition
now i am out of ideas
i think the USB port is seriously damaged. but since i am not so good with soldering and electronics i fear that i am not able to exchange that.
any more suggestions or ideas what might have been the cause?
next few days i will take it to the service center wich i really dislike to do because here where i live that means they keep it for about 6-9 weeks to fix it and i will not get a replacement in the meantime. anyhow my hopes are low that they might fix it i rather believe they replace it for a new one wich i also would dislike. Good thing i made a insurance for that device so in worst case i dont have to pay a single buck...
greetings everyone
Weird. Did you try flashing a stock Google 4.1.2 image? (Check out mskip's thread in Galaxy Nexus Android Development and download the toolkit - make sure it's compatible with 4.1.2 first)
Yes your USB port is most likely broken. Many others have had this problem including me.
Mine was so bad that my PC wouldn't recognize it and neither of my pogo pin docks would work.
I replaced the USB flex cable this week and it works great now. It was a relatively easy repair if you take your time and have the right tools.
The part only cost me $7. http://www.ebay.com/itm/190704059979

I had that same issue after my phone got wet. After about 2 weeks the issues with my USB port went away altogether.
You take your phone places where water might condense on/in it?
thanks miketoasty and thanks El Daddy! i really like this forum a lot very helpful people here.
i ordered the part. Estimatet shipping date somewhat between 30. october and 5. november.
will post updates
at least that error of mine doesnt drain extra battery
reuthermonkey:
i cant think of any place i visit frequently with high levels of moisture or with wet places. I am really careful about that because i love my Nexus witch even goes as far as never ever taking it into the bathroom (not even to a save and dry spot) while showering or bathing. Rain is a bit rare here and even if it is raining i wont leave the house without putting the phone inside a phone-pocket and into the inner side of my jacket.

I had the same issue as you. I ordered a new charging port cable for $7 on ebay, installed it in 15 minutes, and all is well in the world.

If anyone else is having issues, I have a spare USB flex cable that I can send you for just the price of shipping...most likely $3 or so.
i know it is already posted but my issue is different. Some can charge their phone when it is off but mine cant charge even if its off.
When its off and i plug the charger the lightning logo appears, it indicates that its charging but when i turn it on the percentage of the battery remained the same. it didnt charge at all. Also my pc does not recognize my phone whether if its off or on.
i tried with no luck changing rom, kernel, used different cables and chargers (i even used one from LG).
i want to take it back to samsung but my bootloader is unlocked, im using costume rom, and rooted. They will not accept or repair it
EDIT: i want to install the stock rom and relock bootloader but how? since my pc doesnt connect to my phone

Use a cocktail stick and try push the chipinside your phone slot upwards a little (if the phone were laid faceup on a table). Be delicate as you dont want to force it, but a little nudge up and your problems should aaaaall be resolved.
ive already done that no luck.
bump!
if i can restore my phone to stock recovery, stock rom, stock kernel, remove root will they accept it(warranty)? or do they have something to know that i modified my phone?

Is it a play store model or international? If it is international and you are located in the USA, Samsung will not do it. You can replace the usb port yourself..
mine too
Mine did the exact same thing. Good luck sending it in and having them actually fix it. I'm beginning to think their tech guys are really just a room full of chimps randomly putting stuff together.
I told them exactly what the problem was (because I looked it up before sending it in and my problem was the exact same as everyone else's) and they ignored me and just switched out the battery. That didn't work, so I sent it back again. Then, they updated the software. Since it's a hardware issue, obviously that did nothing. Now, they have repaired the PBA. I don't know what a PBA is or what it has to do with my USB port, but I'm betting the issue still will not be fixed and I'll have to send it back, yet again. After all this mess, I think I'm done with Samsung entirely.

probably the repair shop where you took your phone are just too lazy to repair. I hope they wont do the mess they did to you but i think it depends on tech guys if they are lazy enough to repair.

This is kind of what my phone is doing too (here's the thread i've made)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2059289
It will charge, but only to a certain point, regardless of rom, kernel, on or off, etc
over the past few days the maximum charge has gone down and down. Now it only charges to a max of 82%. I have 2 batteries and it does the same thing on each. My (hopeful) solution is that i bought an external wall battery charger and will charge batteries that way. I have the verizon model so if i wanted to do some sort of warranty work i'd probably have to go through them (not even sure if im still covered). I really dont want to deal with it. It boggles my mind why my phone is doing this though, charges fine but not to full. Oh well c'est la vie.

i wouldnt recommend that to people, for me it went from a phone with "phantom charging" (ie flashing on and off for charging) and issues charging to a short circuit on the usb connection, so that the phone switches off when a usb cable is plugged in. What is well worth trying first is simply giving the port a good clean, a little bit of alcohol and that same cocktail stick may well solve your issue. I've been left charging via a chopped up usb cable to the dock connectors.
i dont doubt that forcing the tab in the port may have worked for you, but it has failed badly for others (ie me), so just be careful suggesting it
I had a similar problem as my micro usb socket was damaged. Don't worry about sending it for repair, do it yourself. The circuit board with a new micro usb socket is available on ebay, I paid £5 for mine. Watch a tear-down video or 2 on youtube and you will be sorted.
The GNex is easy to take apart requiring just a small philips head screwdriver and a pry tool, i used a guitar pik, and these are also available on ebay for just a few ££'s.
Can do the whole job in 15 minutes.
Hi, all...
Quick question: did somebody in this forum ever had problems with USB? Mine seems to work only for charging. 'Till the last week, it worked as MSC, with no major problems, then it became faulty, disconnecting and connecting.
Now, to have data connection, is necessary to put pressure at the male connector and hold it this way. I think that it'll require a new PCB, as it doesn't look like software failure. I've googled up and there were other people having trouble with Xperia, but not M, specifically.
So, must I bring it to the assistence?
There's only one way to find out where the source of the problem is: to reflash the ROM.
The USB connector might have got damaged somehow. You can try it with any other device or maybe another xperia m to check for software fault or damage of the USB connector. Try to keep your device at a level below the port for USB in your computer.

Tried with CM 4.4 (FXP one, that's, by the way, terrifc). But it presented the same failure, then I reverted to the stock 4.3's CWM backup, because I didn't want to reinstall every app. Well, at least I,'m now sure that's a hardware failure.

Tried everything (or near everything). It charges, however. There are a little failure, but it should work if the phone is left quiet or not shaken while using it connected to the outlet.
So, for now, I'm going to transfer things using Samba or detached SD (the last being the fastest). Later I'll send it for repair... Shame it perhaps won't work with OTG (a feature I've been searching for, when I bought XM), but, when having money, I'm going to get it fixed.
Thanks for the replies, anyway.

Most problems don't get fixed just by restoring /system. You have to flash the whole
ROM, if it failed with system. If you're worried so much about your data, then just backup /data then restore it afterwards...
I also have this problem.i just elevates the charger cable and its charging but its not working if its not elevated.tried different charger but the problem still persist.so i conclude that its the port in the phone that s malfunctioning.

even my usb cable didn't work. I tried connecting other mobiles too but dint work. And i realized its not problem with the os, but the cable itself was fault!
I am having tons of issues with Android P and the headphone adapters. When I was running dev preview 1 I had a strange issue where they worked with headphones, but not aux cables. I posted here and no one else was having issues so I just dealt with it for a bit. Then the beta came out and I upgraded. Everything started working again after that and I had no issues for a few days. Then it started acting up again. This time with headphones. It would randomly drop the headphones and start playing out of the speakers. Usually a reconnect or reboot would fix it. Then they just quit all together, nothing I did would make them work at all, headphones or aux. So I reflashed back to Oreo. All worked fine, so I upgraded back to the beta. Once again all was good until a few days and everything quit working again. That is where I currently am now. The other thing of note is that it has charging connected device via USB in the notifications. It seems to me that something changes and it starts seeing the adapters as some sort of USB device and not an audio adapter.
I also have 2 adapters and always test both with the same results. Is anyone else having issues? Could this be a hardware issue? I guess the next step is to go back to Oreo for a while and see if it happens there. Maybe it was just a coincidence that it happened when I upgraded.
I only had the issue on the first Dev preview where my aux cable would not play. On the second beta it is still working perfectly and I've been running it since it came out. I don't use headphones, so I have no tested it. I'd say no it is not a hardware issue and is just due to software issues with the beta. If you are worried about hard ware, go back to stock and see if you have the issue. If not, that will tell you it is the software and issues are expected as it is in beta.
I have tried some more steps. I flashed back to stock by opting out of the beta and it still didn't work. So I flashed back to stock with the factory image and that didn't work either. Now the same thing happens no matter what, it just says its supplying power to the device. I contacted support just to see what I could do about it. They are sending a new dongle to test. I do already have two, but it cant hurt to try another first. I suppose if that still doesn't work, the next step will be a new device.
I'd bet bad USB components. Can you connect to your computer? Bet it's not recognized.
Just got my second replacement for bad port. 1st one was smoking.
Second one behaved like yours.... no headphones or PC connection.
