Ok, as I've finally got a phone with at least a decent camera, I'd like to use Picasa. However, when I try to share from the gallery I find myself right back at the very beginning of using this phone; beeing asked to set up my Google account. Did that, got to the next screen ''Your phone has been set up'' and syncing, but no picasa upload. Tried again, same thing. So, is there a setting I'm missing, or is this a bug? I'm on 2.34.1.

Possibly a bug. I dont have a defy in front of me, but i will check in an hour or so.

You should add a Motoblur account for Picasa.
Settings -> Accounts -> add Accounts
Then you'll see the "Picasa" under the list of "Motoblur Accounts"
Good luck.
Ah, as I suspected...
See, I´m on the de-blurred ROM, 2.34.1, and there is no such option under Add accounts.
So, the option to share to Picasa from the gallery must be sort of a remnant of MotoBlur.
I solved it in another way though, installing two apps; Picasa Tool and Picasa Uploader from Market. Not as smooth, but it works.
Great! I'll try Picasa Tool and Picasa Uploader. Have you considered Flickr?

Hey guys!
It's 2011, so if you haven't already taken a step into the cloud, it's time to get started! This guide shows you how to take all your data automatically in the cloud to free your phone storage for things like apps and games, which cannot be accessed through a cloud (yet).
Before I start, I just want to make it clear that this thread should NOT be used to discuss what things are safe in the cloud and all that privacy related stuff. If you have passed your ego and realized that you are not the most important/secret person on this planet with all your documents and stuff being soo secret, then go on, the cloud is waiting for you. If you have problems concerning privacy related topics open a new thread and simply CTRL + W out of here right now.
A second note concerning availability of Internet in some areas:
Before you synchronize everything through a cloud you have to ask yourself how often you loose your internet connection with your mobile. If you find yourself often in areas without coverage or poor connection, or if you have a limited data plan you maybe only should sync your Contacts & Calendars, but not Movies since it would become unusable, or at least very frustrating. In Germany and U.S.A. (I guess) you don't have to worry anymore, I've got full speed connection no matter where I go, but you have to know this for yourself.
Personal Stuff - Contacts, Calendars and more
First of all, let's start with the obvious stuff. Things like Calendars, E-Mail, Contacts not only can be stored in the cloud, it would be foolish not to do so! In a time when people have more than one device that can access the internet and are "smart" (i.e. can display calendars & stuff, don't blame me for calling that smart, blame the ads ) it would be terrible when devices can't communicate with each other to sync changes. When your appointment get's delayed it should show up directly on your PC, shouldn't it? But enough of the reasons, let's get this started.
Setting this sync up maybe the easiest of all, because Android is all about syncing these stuff almost by default. You simply have to use the Google Apps GMail for your mail and contacts, Google Calendar for your schedule and so on. Feel free to discover all of the Google Apps and decide for yourself what you need and want.
To set the sync up on your phone simply
Goto Settings -> Accounts and sync -> [email protected] -> Sync Contacts, Calendar, Gmail, ...
And boom! there you go. All your information is now synced between your devices, no matter where you change any of it.
Photos
The next thing to sync would be your pictures. For this media type, I have chosen to write a guide about setting up a sync with Google's Picasa Webapp. Although you might choose other Photohosting sites like Flickr or SmugMug, Picasa enjoys a deep integration in the Android system. To set this sync up, you need to go through 2 steps:
1. (Automatic) Upload of your pictures
Like fruit-fanatic Jobs said: "There's an app for that". For this task (and the movies later) the app "Pixelpipe Post and Upload HD" seems to be perfect, since it also got a feature to automatically upload your pics to your Picasa web albums right after you've shot one.
Set-Up Guide:
1. Create a Pixelpipe account
2. Create a "pipe" for your Picasa account
3. Enable "auto upload" in Settings (works like a charm on the Galaxy S)
4. Shoot some pics and try
2. Sync your Picasa web albums to the phone
After we got our Photos up in the cloud, we need a way to view them on our device. Thanks to Google, we can integrate them in our SNS sync in the settings menu:
Goto Settings -> Accounts and sync -> [email protected] -> Sync Picasa Web Albums
After your next sync (i.e. immediately ) you can find all your Picasa web albums in the Gallery app indicated with a small Picasa logo. This is the major advantage of Picasa, because with your photos being integrated in the gallery, every third party app can use them to modify or distribute your images.
Movies
In syncing movies, we take a similar way like Photos, also using the Pixelpipe app. Our destination will be Youtube because it delivers us unlimited space. Disadvantages of Youtube are a 15 min limit, but if you don't have a problem with that, Youtube is fine.
To set the sync up, simply add a "pipe" in your Pixelpipe app to Youtube and enable autosync. I recommend to set the video to private or not listed, because but that is again your own choice. You have to choose wether you want to have the whole Youtube Community watching your pretty vids or not . You can choose to opt-out on autosync, and only upload when you are on Wifi, since this could really take up some bandwith. The advantage of uploading with the Pixelpipe app over the built in "Share to -> Youtube" option is that you can upload HD video. The built in share option uploads your videos in minor quality.
To view your videos simply fire up your youtube app and enter your Username. Your videos will then be displayed under the "My Videos" tab. To download them again, simply use any of the Youtube video downloader apps available on the market.
Music
For our favorite tunes, we will use mSpot to access and stream our whole library directly from our phone. First of all you have to download the sync app for your Computer from www.mspot.com and select what you want to send up into the cloud. Note that free Users gain 2 GB of storage, so maybe you need to make a selection on what you want to take with you and what not.
After your music is placed in the cloud you can download the mspot Music app for Android, enter your Username and PW and gain direct access to your music. The only lag I encountered was when starting a song, it takes about 1-2 seconds longer than a local media player like Winamp, but mspot can also access files that are directly stored on your phone.
NOTE: Galaxy devices are having a playback issue right now, where the song sometimes just goes silent and you have to tap on pause and resume to hear something again. Mspot is aware of this issue and working on it.
Data
Tired of connecting your phone through USB to copy stuff to your device? The answer to that is "Fiabee"! This works best with Google's Browser Chrome since you can directly put images and more into your Fiabee space or send them directly to the device (Link). The advantage of Fiabee is: Space. They are throwing free space away like hell, I just got 16GB because I was an early user -> Try it!
Another service of choice could be DropBox. Here you have a volume that syncs to every device that is connected the cloud, wether it is a desktop computer, netbook, mobile or tablet. An extremely reliable and fast service, which makes sharing with specific persons or groups very easy.
That's it! If you have any suggestion, comment or question, feel free to share your thought!
bye, Smirny

Don't be sad, I'll send you a golden USB cable for next christmas
for Galaxy S owners all of the above are optional
as it requires either an unlimited 3G plan, or wifi access all the time
for Nexus S owners, it's almost a must to have everything on the cloud
well I have quite unlimited 3G here @Vodafone. And my HD videos only get uploaded through Wifi, it simply would take too long through 3G sometimes.
1) good one, thanks!
2) Does pixelpipe delete the uploaded photos? Otherwise you would see them twice. Picasa and on the phone ?!

No it does not delete the photos. Currently you have to do it manually :/

No, of course not ^^ At some places even I reach faster cellular upload rates than at home, but it still takes some time, so I don't want to walk around the Munich airport in circles to upload my videos =)
Thanks, any chance of a fiabee invite?
of course. Isn't registration open any longer?
https://sync.fiabee.com/i/4d210e4c11af1
thanks, just read somewhere that invites get you more space? but it doesn't seem that is the case anymore But still 1gb storage is better than nothing
well then maybe you should rely on dropbox, fiabee syncs well, but for some images you can't do stuff with them in other apps because you can't put them in the gallery :/ but in combination with the google chrome webapp it's beautiful.
btw. just realized that I forgot to link that chrome app in the original post ^^

Is there an option to automatically make the uploaded videos private on YouTube or does it take a manual setting?

I haven't found an option yet, I'd be curious about that too :/ Right now you have to set it to private manually, and the particular bad thing about this is that you can't do that neither in the app nor the mobile website, you have to go to the desktop website to do that :/ Or maybe I have missed a setting ...
great news:
the mSpot App now got rid of the Playback issue and it works perfectly on the SGS now =)
I've been looking all over for a comparison between Fiabee and Dropbox. Anyone?

Hi,
I read somewhere that ICS can have high res contact photo in the People App, but only when synced with Google+.
Is that true?
That means, if you don't sync with Google+, and utilizing only Google Contacts (GMAIL Contacts), you will get low resolution 96x96 from Google Contacts.
So, how do you add the Google+ profile of your contact in the People App?
Do you add it manually? Or the People App will automatically search and pick one for you?
Because, if we can add the G+ profile manually, I think we can have workaround by creating G+ profile for them manually !
This is a right f**k up pain in the ar5e problem that could probably be easily fixed by google.
I used an external app to link all my google contacts to my facebook contacts thus providing pictures, its better to do it that way because if I install a custom rom that requires a wipe I dont have to re-link the contacts.
Unfortunately about 0.5% of my phone contacts and facebook friends have google plus so i've no idea how to get around it.
ICS looks so cool and polished only for someone to ring me and present me with a picture that looks like its come out of a 1980's pong game. grrr

Make sure you have your IRL friend in your normal Android/Google contacts, then if you add your manually created "friend" on Google+ there will be 2 separate contacts on your phone - one for phone, one for G+.
If you go to the "phone" contact and select "edit" in the menu then on the next page there will be an option to "Join" in that menu.
If you then select the G+ contact, it will be joined to the phone contact as one user with phone number and G+ pic!
Or I think you can just manually add a photo to the contact but I haven't tested whether that is definitely hires or not.
All my contacts are on Google Contacts. I've assigned photos from Picasa but they still look crap...
Why Why Why..
I think you can manually change contact photo with high res one.
But, once you synced with Google Contacts, it will be replaced with the low res from Google Contacts.
I wish there is an option to just disable contact photo sync, photo only.
Or, is there any clever developer who could create an app to simply replace all contact photos with user selected one?
I could imagine the app would work like this:
. The app works like the contact app, when started it will show you contact list
. Then you can assign photo manually to each contact
. App will remember this assigment
. Woth one button hit, the app replaced all contacts pgoto with the assigned one
So, every time after we synced with Google Contact, we simply run the app, hit the replace all contact photos button, and we are done!
Okay, any dev out there? I will pay premium for this kind of app!

a much easier way is to get a decent sized pic of your contact and save it to your phone and then edit contact > edit pic > select new pic. simples! - they DO NOT have to be from Google+ at all!
Hope that helps!

Not quite true. As soon as you sync your contacts with Google it sends them to the cloud which uses 96x96 photos. For some reason these then get used on the phone.

In my experience the phone will keep the high res contact picture, but if you delete your contacts for whatever reason (e.g. factory reset) then restoring from Google Contacts will bring back the low res versions.
The Google+ versions seem to work with high res photos, but since only about 4 or 5 of my "real life" friends actually use Google+ this is a bit pointless for me.
This is a problem with Google Contacts only saving low res pics, and it has been a request from the community to upgrade these for absolutely ages. So far it has gone unnoticed, which I presume is because of the focus on using Google+.
There seems to be a lot of duplicated features now G+ has come out, such as Picasa/G+ Photos; GTalk/Messenger; Google Contacts/G+ Contacts; and these really need to be consolidated which will hopefully iron out issues such as these.
guys how do I edit a contact on the phone?

I really don't understand why they didn't turn long press on in the People App. Having to reach all the way at the top of the screen to get to "Menu" icon and then "Edit" takes a lot more effort especially when you have to edit a lot of contacts.
Anyhow. Do you guys know whether all the "linking" I made to each and every single contact to its Twitter or Google+ account will be sync'ed or backed up on Google's server? Thinking about installing custom ROM.
Does anyone know how to link contacts from within the phone (like when you have multiple contacts like with Whatsapp adding its own version of the contact)?

At some point in time you must've enabled the Instant Upload feature (and have obviously subsequently disabled it). The folder is in Picasa Web Albums, and it is non-removable from what I can see.
maybe this is different in 2.4, but you should have an option under syncing to not sync Picasa and instant upload.

Google syncing brings Picasa to you in gallery by default. Turn off google photo's sync or edit the picasa web album
When you have the album open in Picasa Web Albums, choose Action, Delete Album - YOU WILL lose all photo's but it should then not show up.
To prevent it again in Google + turn off instant uploads

You don't need to have picasa installed on the phone for this to happen, Picasa Web Albums is online. It is where your pictures are saved when you enable Instant Upload in Google+, something which you must have enabled at some point since you have the folder.

Speaking of the Gallery, is there any way to order the folders/albums alphabetically? It seems like they're ordered completely randomly, which is really annoying if you have a lot of albums.

Have you disabled any apps? I disabled a pile of crap I don't use (Google+, Books, Talk, News & Weather) and I got the same. Then I re-enabled them and it worked again. Didn't get into trying them one at a time yet.
On de SGS the Gallery-app gave al lot of problems. One of them was that it used al lot of juice. Another was that it not always showed all pictures. For those reasons I installed Quickpic. It is a free app and very reliable. But let's hope that the Gallery-app is improved on ICS.

Have you tried clearing the gallery cache/date from app manager after you disabled google+? I bet they become linked upon initial start of gallery.
Yeah, that was the first thing I looked at.
Actually, now that I think about it, I did a settings wipe through titanium backup, but not a cache wipe through app manager.

Another weird thing with the gallery. When looking at the details of some images (transferred over from PC/Mac) I get a time of Jan 1, 1970. Normaly taken pictures, screenshots and those send from another phone through bluetooth have the proper time shown.
a problem I have sometimes is I get grey boxes instead of pictures
Just poke and hold on the gallery folder then hit the delete button. Problem solved?
Can anyone please share the APK?
All latest baked, oops cooked releases include the annoying version with online (Picasa) sync....
