[Q] Opera Mobile lagging? - HTC One X

Hi guys,
since I am a big fan and have always used Opera Mobile on my previous Android Devices, I was looking forward to use it on the big One X screen.
First start disappointed me tho. Opera Mobile is quite laggy here. Sluggish scrolling, sluggish pinch-to-zoom, takes quite long for text reflow. Seems like its just running with the 500 Mhz companion core? Well, it sure feels like it.
Anybody else with this issue?
Stock Browser now runs flawlessly smooth here after disabling the 3-pinch-htc gesture in the system settings, but, like all stock browsers, it doesnt seem to support download for all file types and no "save to...".

+1
I'm sure Opera guys are working on this, right?

New version today fixes crashes flash ics and htc one x ;-)

But it still lags.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium

I don't seem to have that problem. Zooming in and out is smooth as ever, text reflow is quick as well.

It's like it's running on low fps for me when scrolling and zooming. ROM 1.28.

Hey, has anybody found a solution for the laggy experience with OperaMobile? Or this is an isolated issue and only few people has it?

Can someone check if their opera mobile is running hardware accelerated?
Go to opera:gpu and check if it says hardware acceleration Disabled or Enabled

Opera MINI is OK ..very smooth..
opera mobile sadly is not...
I recommend FIREFOX for best experience (and rich futured)
------
I also had this lag on Sony Xperia S..also benchmark with STOCK ANDROID on sony was 100000+ and with Opera Mobile was 35000 ..so u see the dif..

[MOD]Webkit browser accelerate

I didn't make this, I just found it and put it in a flashable zip.
It was in the meXdroid Pre-Ghost Chili ROM, but for some reason not in the latest AIO version. I think it was also in the CM7 nightlies, but I'm not entirely sure.
Anyway, it just makes the webkit browsers(pretty much all browsers except Opera and Firefox) a little smoother, especially when pinch-zooming in.
I tested this working on CM7 nightly 204 and meXdroid Ghost Chili AIO.
It didn't work on MIUI and Sense ROMS. MIUI hanged at boot and Sense crashed the browser. You can try it if you want though.
Download:
http://www.multiupload.com/P4UCPVX4IY
The .zip flashes 2 files:
system/lib/libwebcore.so
system/lib/libwebkitaccel.so
Do you have some benchmarks or something?
Because I don't know if I will flash it if it is a "little smoother"
Here's a video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2DZnie3u0YI
Dang! That's smoother than Opera! Wish it was working for MIUI though :/
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
It's not smoother than Opera, but it's definitely an improvement.
Zooming out is still a little laggy like normal, and scrolling on large pages(like xda forums expanded view) is still laggy.
I wonder why they removed this from the CM7 nightlys though.
When I first judged the performance, I was basing my observations on the YT video. Now, I'm running CM7 and using the stock browser.
- the stock browser seemed smoother than Dolphin HD, but yes, not as smooth as Opera. Rendering wasn't perfect on Opera 100% of the time though (the google mobile page comes to mind).
- it was definitely smoother than normal, mostly after the page finished loading. When the page was still loading, scrolling was still fairly choppy. But still definitely recommended for those not on Opera.

Definitely some difference on CM7. Stability is noticeably lower though.
Still not at Opera's level =/
Vellamo shows that it's now running close to 60fps instead of 30fps

I use stock browser on meXdroidmod ghost chili AIO. It is buttery smooth. Way better than the video posted above. I really can't imagine it being better cause its that smooth.
Sent from my HTC Vision using xda premium
I actually used meXdroidmod AIO in the video. After I flashed gapps(non modded) it broke the theme.
Also, because all browsers on Android use the same webkit engine, I doubt one is smoother than the other. Because of this, this should work on all those browsers(incl. Dolphin HD).
With the exception of Opera Mobile and Firefox though. Those 2 use their own rendering engine.

Works great! They removed it from CM due to stability issues but honestly I rather deal with the occasional crash than slow browsing. For shame on all of you who didn't thank the guy for posting this! Wtf is wrong with you people?! Don't worry! I gave you 5 points to make up for it. Also, it only works on 2.3.4 and above...

I haven't noticed any stability issues myself though, but I also rather have a occasional crash than the normal choppy browsing. I always had to use Opera, since the stock browsers were so horribly slow.
Let's hope IceCreamSandwich will be better. The ICS browser will supposedly have full hardware acceleration in the browser.
Also, I just tested this on my sisters' Nexus S, and it worked. Perhaps it works on more devices?

Yeah, it should work for any phone with 2.3.4 and above. The latest CM Nightlies build 220 has a performance option to smooth scrolling in general. Combine with this and its pretty darn smooth. Opera is a great alternative but its rendering can be screwy sometimes. Plus, it always opens pages in overview which drives me nuts, lol! But ICS, we are ALL looking forward to. I was unaware that the browser would have full hardware acceleration. That's awesome! Our devices have a decent GPU and great CPU so we should be set!
Thanks for the mod, it works well on the CM7 nightly build that I'm running
Is this only for the g2?

No, it also works on a Nexus S and probably more devices. But I'm not sure if the .zip will work on your device.
If it doesn't, you can just extract the zip and use adb to push "libwebkitaccel.so" and "libwebcore.so" to system/lib/.
Yep it works, snappy. Thanks dude

[Q] Any smooth scrolling browser in Andorid?

Hello all, I am a Desire HD user for a year.
I am using Opera 10.1 beta which is the smoothest browser i have ever used.
I installed many browsers via market and i found that most of them are really
choppy, not as smooth as iPhone's safari even flash is disabled.(Or this problem can not be solved due to the hardware?)
So, I wonder if there are any browsers that would be better than Opera?
Thanks.
The reason the iPhone browser feels smoother is that as soon as your finger touches the screen all page rendering & element loading stops, whereas on Android it continues, hence the "choppy" feeling.
You can read more here --> https://plus.google.com/100838276097451809262/posts/VDkV9XaJRGS
As for your actual question, I use CyanogenMod7 and the browser works normally, minor choppiness as per.
ive had many phones from windows mobile to android, and over the years the browser i continuously return to is opera mobile (which you cannot f***k with)
ive tried
dolphin
maxathon
stock
firefox
all the browsers suck bigtime compared to opera no matter what anyone says,
stick to opera mobile, it works well, its all in the rendering,
ive had alot of problems trying to log into certain sites with the above browsers, when i used opera no issues at all!
smooth browsers
I've tried loads of browsers for Android and I always come back to Opera, mini for speed or if u have slow internet and mobile for everyday browsing. Love it so much I'm using it for P.c aswell with the Opera link function keeps ur bookmarks synced over mobile and desktop. If u r on 10.1 beta I'd update if I were u there has probably been 8 or 9 updates since then a couple of them major ones. Current version is 11.5.3
I always use Opera too. I tried many as per this page.
For me Opera is superior because of its smoothness and pretty good speed.
If you are using ICS (Ice Cream Sandwich) you could also try ICS Browser Plus from Beansoft, which is new.
From what I see, the stock browser (of Android 2.3 in HTC Desire HD) is pretty good -- it has decent speed, and it provides adequate "reflow" of text when you zoom a page.
Opera's speed is about the same, but the problem with Opera (at least the current version from Market) is that it always renders text formatted for "zoomed in" (as after double click) zoom level -- even if you zoom out, the columns width (in characters) remains the same, narrow. Which renders it less then usable IMHO . BTW, not sure why, I'm pretty sure I've see bundled versions of Opera on Windows Mobile, which rendered text with adequate reflow, I guess this is some marketing feature for them.
The rest of available browsers are just not very good from the performance standpoint. So with all the available choices, there is actually no good alternative to the stock one
Thank you guys, thanks for the information.
Hope that the stable ICS would release soon and bring our Desire HD to next level...

[Q] galaxy note 2 Google chrome lag

Does anyone fine scrolling a webpage on Google chrome a little bit slow as oppose to the stock browsers ?
It doesn't seem to do it on the nexus 7 and our didn't seem to on the gallacy s3, only see the issue on my note 2. Is anyone else experience this issue?
Same story here. The stock browser scrolls and zooms much smoother.
I've been seeing the same thing. I had the same issue on my GS2 and thought it was just the older hardware, guess not. Been thinking of switching to an alternative browser.
Personally I love chrome and have had no issues.

Try Boat browser you wont look back, install Adobe Flash from XDA video below on it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NGI87D7lVyA
For me chrome is also laggy. Best for me is stock+full screen and gestures....
I have to agree, It seems that the stock browser seems to work pretty well under most situations. I'm not sure why chrome behaves this way, it was the same on my note 1.
Chrome is bit laggy than stock browser.it was same issue on s3 too.
Before rooting when screen dim, I can click home screen and it returns to where I was.but now it closes down to homescreen.

Does it perform any better with a different ROM? My nexus7 never had the issue, it was buttery-smooth and its only sporting a tegra3 CPU. I feel as if its maybe some sort of graphical driver or something...
The stock browser works fine, buttery smooth, almost as good as iPhone/Safari, but I'm at a loss as to explain chrome.. It worked fine on the S3 I tried at the shops (I think it was the I9305?). Has anyone had any insight as to why it might be slowish on some and faster on other devices?

Chrome is laggy on any device including the Nexus 7 that I sold.
Chrome is laggy on my ipad 3 as well. Stock browsers seem to be much better integrated with cpu / gpu. Even on ipad safari owns chrome in terms of smoothness.
I have the Omega ROM on my Note II and Chrome is very stuttery when scrolling. I really like the way Chrome works but just can't use it due to the jerkiness of the scrolling, and it's also slower when flinging up and down long pages.
At the moment using Dolphin which uses the built in engine with it's own UI on top and liking it mostly. Will give Boat a try though.

My problem with the One V: Massive lag when using browser (please tips!)

Hi,
First of all, I appreciate that you're taking some time to read my topic
I've got a problem with my One V for a long time now. Overall, the performance of my phone is great. But when using certain apps, for example, a browser (doesn't matter which one, I tried stock browser, Chrome, Opera, Firefox, Dolphin, enz) my phone gets laggy and then completely locks up until I can't even get the screen back on and I have to hard reset it. The problem is most pronounced with browsers but I know that apps like Facebook can trigger the problem too.
I already addressed this problem earlier in the threads of ROMs I was using, but because I think most of you don't have a good idea of what I mean so I made a video to demonstrate the problem.
I have this problem with most custom ROM's. Lloir's and Maxwen's CM10 had this problem and Shpongle (which I'm currently using) has it. I used AOKP for some time back and I'm pretty sure that AOKP didn't have the problem, but unfortunately that ROM had other problems (sound not working, and that's a pretty big deal you know)
I never used stock ROM so I don't know if it's present there as well.
I feel like I'm the only victim of this issue and I've tried everything to get it solved. It's just very annoying because can't use my phone without having to reset it 1-3x per day. I'm at the point that I have no idea what could be causing it and I don't know how to solve it.
I already tried using Turbo Boost, but that didn't solve it. It is very probably not a memory issue; my RAM is not full when the problem shows up.
I'm thinking about trying to revert to stock... Maybe the issue is not present in stock ROM. But I hope you guys can help me in some way... Maybe there are other users with the same problem?
Try downloading greenify. I have this problem, and just set Facebook and other draining apps to hibernate when my screen shuts off....problem solved.

Very strange... maybe your phone's motherboard is broken, so when WiFi transmitter gains signal and send it forward, there's some point in that way that causing problems... I'm talking about WiFi cause you haven't said what are you using: 3G/4G or WiFi... or maybe your router is causing those problems...
And you haven't got back to stock completely... I propose U to flash myONEv 9.5 or Ignorance v3 (best performance and the smoothest I think) and check if that problem repeats... addintionally you can compare CM10/AOKP with custom-Sense ROMs for me custom-Sense ROMs are better than CM10/AOKP

It's not like it is "draining apps". The problem only appears when the screen is on and I use the apps actively. If the phone is so slow that I can't get the screen back on, most of the time it 'recovers' again when I wait for 30-60 minutes with screen off. Off course I don't have the time for that so I hard-reset it.
So I don't think Greenify will do anything in my case.

It doesn't matter whether I'm using WiFi, 2G (GPRS/EDGE), 3G (UMTS) or HSDPA.
Second, it doesn't look like the problem happens with internet access in general. It more happens with certain apps. For example, I can stream video's from Dropbox perfectly. In that case I both have heavy CPU/GPU usage (because of the video decoding/playback) and heavy internet traffic (because I stream from Dropbox), but I have no problems.

Today I installed myONEv RC9.5 FX+ and it is quite a bit smoother, but that goes for every fresh ROM install
I have to test for a few more days to give an answer about whether the problem is fixed or not. The problem seems to be a lot less pronounced with fresh ROM installs and I need to use it some time to be sure.
However, so far I don't think I really like Sense ROMs I've come across several things that I like better in Shpongle or CM10. For example, in most of those ROMs you get in settings an extra options menu with performance settings (overclocking, kernel settings, I/O scheduler, compcache), auto-brightness levels tweaks, auto-rotate tweaks, softkeys settings, statusbar tweaks and such. Does anyone know good compact app that features all this?
Oh, and it's only Android ICS 4.0.1 I was used to JB 4.2.2

The browser lag is not just you. I have tried every single browser offered on google play and they all become slow and unresponsive. The only browser I use is stock 4.1.2 browser. Anything else is garbage. Including Opera Mini (not because of lag but because of its bugs in reloading pages when submitting passwords, text in boxes in general..over all its a piece of sh*t) and so are the other "mini" styled browsers. Seems the browser developers have forgotten that they are developing browsers for PHONES..NOT COMPUTERS!! Hell many of the browsers bloat up after install to sizes larger than many desktop browsers..what a joke. I down rate them all on the market.

The fastest and cheapest (low mobile data usage ) browser is Opera Mini... and I haven't seen any bugs in it :good:
i beg to differ. opera mini has several bugs that go back as far as opera mini 4. inputting text in text fields like password, username and general reply/post boxes results in a page reload that requires user to start all over again...and sometimes this reload loops infinitely. the bug starts with operas flawed data compression system in which they crunch and preload pages on their servers before ypu actually get the content. its because the compression via srrver versus direct to device mucks up the transmission of the types of data mentioned. and i wont even start on the "new" opera mobile...what a joke that has become. no opera mini is not bug free by any means. and even after many users submit bug reports about the reload/lost data bug...opera does nothing...either because they cant fix it or dont think its there. well it is and has been for years..

But Opera mini next is so good to me.
Ultra FAST and stable
Opera mini next 7.5... Not old Opera mini
But the problem is not memory, it's because message cpu usage of these browsers
For Example Google Chrome run on 100% of cpu and Opera mini runs on 50% average with 10 open tabs!

Browsing. Why can't it be smooth?

So i have a top of the line tablet with octacore, 3gb of ram and the latest KitKat 4.4.2, I don't use energy saving either. And no matter what browser I use the experience is never satisfactory.
Chrome is pretty good but it has 0 functionality. We use our fingers not a mouse! And still laggy in certain situations (same goes for Samsung stock browser).
UC browser HD is very good too in terms of scrolling, but when you're typing text is lagging behind and switching and creating tabs stutters horribly.
And Firefox, the mother of lag. When you scroll down a page really fast it takes the browser up to 5 seconds to render the damn page! While you are already looking at it. Try it out for yourself, you scroll then you only get a gray page, then everything plops in very blurry and then after another few seconds stuff gets rendered and is finally sharp.
I know that every browser has this issue to some extent. But most render much faster than firefox so it doesn't appear as an issue. Anyway can't android keep a Web page in memory completely? I have 3gb of it!
Or maybe I'm doing it wrong or you guys can suggest me a different browser with good usability and smoothness? Thx in advance
Unfortunately it's not smooth and it seems that it will never be. Only next browser seems to be little better from others.

nearly all browsers are laggy, there is so much ad crap loaded these days.
Once the page has loaded mine is smooth, so depends on you internet speed I guess.

Many ram doesn't mean will smooth. Because it use power of GPU and app can be use it and resoluiton.
Opera i see very smooth. Chrome and fire fox lag like hell.

Then maybe we just have different perceptions boat browser is not smooth at all on my tablet... Maybe I have to do a video or something because boat browser is one of the most laggy browsers I've tried :/ not as bad as firefox but pretty annoying.

We must... I've tried just about every browser on my P600.... Boat is about as fast as they come... ( I have recently started to use Habit a little more due to lower CPU use, and a few nice features).
Boat both Tablet and Phone versions have been used daily for 6months, it simply doesn't lag... I can pinch to zoom, pan, scroll all completely with ease and without any lag, stutter or hiccup. Even browsers like Opera were too slow for me, I could see the text blur for a second before becoming sharp when zooming, panning or scrolling quickly. I don't have any such issues with Boat. Others like Chrome and Firefox just aren't even close.
I have of course optimized my tablet in numerous ways (without root) such as developer option animations, and Nova launcher etc.
Feel free to try other browsers mentioned here:

If you are receiving lag on boat, you are doing something wrong or you have a problem with your tablet...
Thx for your lengthy post. I'd like to believe then, that I have different settings or something... I tried to make a video and compare boat browser and UC HD (which is smooth but has other issues).
I used n4g.com and Watson.ch both are big pages with lots of images. It's not that apparent in the video though because it's not 60fps (duh) but I think you can see the difference

Oh well ..
On an IPAD , you cant really scroll completely like you can in Android ...
On Android the faster you move your finger the sooner it reaches the bottom of the page .. But on IPAD it only scrolls to an extent , hiding the fact that its still loading the rest of the webpage in the background . IOS is really good at hiding a lot of other things too and I actually like that and dont mind that since the experience is nice .. The only reason why I dont like IOS is because of a lack of a file browser , no usb pen drive connectivity , expandable storage , and itunes for doing anything and very little customization ..
The UI on an IPAD is really smooth and thats how its been ... plus ios talks in low level language ( Objective - C ) to the hardware directly where as Android has a middle man ( JAVA ) in between itself and the hardware
I have a surface pro .. and thats really really smooth for anything but its too heavy ..
So I have realized there is no happy place yet
Ideally I would wish there will be an os that has Flexibility of Android , Smoothness and optimization like IOS and Power of The Surface pro .. with Accurate Stylus support .... Oh well I can only dream .. but its funny that such technology still does not exist in 2014 .
No happy place :crying: wurde
We have some amazing browsers out there... It would just be nice if they were a bit smoother overall. And somehow it feels like it's simple a matter of better code and not hardware limitations... That's what's bugging me!

No problems... I can see the differences in your video, I'm not sure it's a huge difference but I can notice it.
Can you try the Mobile version of Boat instead of the Tablet version, for some reason I mainly stuck with the Phone version, although I have both loaded. I will try and also post a video at some stage of the varying browsers on mine to also show the difference, but it may take a few days...
Also UC browser (which has a reputation for being one of the fastest) seems to work fairly well on your video. What were/are your other issues, perhaps it's easier to address those issues than trying to get the other browsers working as fast for you.

Do you use developer options?
Boat browser was stuttering for me a lot also. Seeing this thread reminded me of the force GPU rendering option which I had checked.
I just unchecked it and it seems to be making a difference
Edit: Disregard that, doesn't make any difference.
Hmm. I like the stock browser in 4.4. It's a hell of a lot faster than 4.3 was. XDA and the WSJ are heavy sites; is this slow?

To me that does seem a tad bit on the slow side. Not so much the page loading but the repressiveness to pinch-to-zoom and finger scrolling seemed a bit laggy.

Screen painting is a bit slower than my N3 but that's to be expected considering the enormous difference in display area. Page loading (which is slower than screen painting) is exactly the same on both. So is navigating around a page once it's loaded. I guess I have low standards.

I don't have a Note 3 but I have a Nexus 5 and it's no where near that laggy. In fact I'm pretty sure my Note 10.1 2014 is smoother than that as well. But I'm rooted with a bunch of tweaks, custom ROM, and custom kernel.
Here my takes:
1) Boat browser - fastest and best features, support flash
2) dolphin browser - second place, similar features as Boat, support flash
3) Others that support flash.
Try http://finance.yahoo.com and see how fast and how the page display with your browser!!
