[Q] Do I need root to flash official Google ROMs, or just an unlocked bootloader? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Thinking of changing my yakjuux Galaxy Nexus on 4.0.2 to yakju 4.0.4 and wanted to know this before I proceed and (possibly) screw anything up

Just unlock the bootloader. Then you can flash the images. It will wipe the device.

Sweet, thanks.
One more thing: Because it will wipe everything, I understand I have to reinstall apps. I've bought a few (poweramp, draw something, all well known stuff, basically). Will I be able to just redownload them using the same Google account, or do I have to do something special because I bought them?

When you add your GMail account during initial setup, you will be prompted to allow the Play Store to auto-install previously purchased apps. You can also manually re-install them from the Play Store because its associated with your account.
If you want to backup your apps and their data, you can always use the ADB method for backing up, which will pull everything off to your computer, and you can restore it to the new firmware install.

How can I remove all google apps?
If you're simply trying to change the Google account the phone uses, go to Settings > Accounts and Sync, and then add your new/other Google account and remove the problematic one.
Thats does not work.
It says the "problematic" account can not be removed because its used by other applications.
And this is AFTER you added the second account? You may have to do an entire wipe and then sign in with the new account on first boot.

I think the answer to my own question is yes;therefore, should I just follow these instructions?

im good, disregard.
I must have missed the part where you were rooted, but yes, I always suggest a wipe from recovery. When re-flashing, dont forget to install the latest gapps.
Is a rom install needed? Can't he just reset data via factory reset?

You will find there is already a how-to thread explaining how to root and what it accomplishes.
Does it detail how to back up my whole device's data?
Use mybackup, or Google'sbackup/restore service (settings-application I think) to backup your apps. Unlocking the boot loader will wipe your settings, so you will have to set those up again. It is worth it though...

Google's backup does not work, at least in my experience. The box was checked before i did a factory reset. I have re-installed a few apps and their data wasn't reinstalled by Google. Also, the wifi setting weren't re-installed
It doesn't back up the data, does it? just the apps themselves as it auto-installs them from the Market when you sign into your account on an Android handset

What in stock ROM syncs my apps?

By that I mean when I restore to a stock ROM all my past apps are auto-downloaded to my phone and setup for me, but when I flashed a JB ROM from on here the same doesn't happen and I have to install a ****ton of applications manually and all.
All it does is re-download them from the Play Store when you enter your Google credentials and check the right boxes during initial setup.

Odd, because I did login during the initial setup and it didn't.
When you switch ROMs your Google play id It gets regenerated aka Google sees it as a new device. titanium backup can back it up and restore. Heck you might as well use it to backup and restore your apps and app data while your at it.

Ah, damn makes sense.
Oh well, Jellybean was worth it.

Do apps sync when flashing a new ROM?

Might sound like a stupid question. I just unlocked, rooted, and flashed Jelly Belly, and was wondering if there was a quick way to recover your apps. The only way I've known is to login to play.google.com and send all the apps I want manually through the web interface. Is it possible to have your apps auto sync once you login to your Google account for the first time upon setup? Maybe some other way. It just pains me to manually have to go to the Google Play Store web interface from my computer and send each app one at a time to my phone. Thanks guys.
during the time when you set it up and logged into google it should of asked you to restore apps if it didnt well then your going to have to do them one by one unless of course you had titanium backup or something
I think while I was still on stock ICS and did a full wipe for a new kernel when I rebooted all my apps started downloading instantly as soon as I signed into Google. Since then thought that hasn't happened. I just go to the play store and look at my app purchase history and download the ones I had. Would like to know how to set up the auto feature, I think it might have to do with the Currents folder I have that is being backed up to Google now.

Yeah, that's the issue I'm having. I know a friend of mine doesn't have this issue. Everytime he flashes a new ROM his apps are restored automatically. On the other hand, when I sign into my Google account for the first time, my apps aren't synced and downloaded automatically. Everything else is, like contacts, etc get restored, but not apps for some reason. Any idea why my Google account isn't syncing my apps?
Just backup user apps and data through adb or a toolkit and restore when done. I've flashed all of the stock update leaks using this method, up and running in no time with everything back to normal. Don't backup system apps and data unless are reflashing the same ROM.

Can Titanium Backup do this?

[Q] Tablet 101 missing

Good Evening,
So I failed at rooting my device last night so I took everything back to what I assume is factory reset. After the factory rest my play store would show the tablet 101 and all the apps optimized for tablets. Now when I go in there I do not see the buttons. I have not made any changes to my tablet. Has anyone else encountered this?
Simply flash the stock rom and everything will be fine

Try going into settings deleting your Google account. After you reenter the account Google play *should* act normal.

And if that fails you might be able to use one of the apps that spoofs your device's capabilities to the play store, but I think "fixing" it is a better option.
