Attention! I found out that the damn FASTBOOT option is causing a lot of problems esp related to camera and browser screen glitches.
My wife's one X is on fastboot and had a auto reboot and a few force closes and screen glitches started to appear, compared to mine with fastboot off from first day had non of the above mentioned issues.
Go to settings/Power then uncheck fastboot option and restart your phone.
pardon me if this has been mentioned.
That's not banding, banding us when gradients are not smooth. What you see are graphical glitches, these are usually graphics driver issues.
Is it a driver issue? If it is then won't all units be effected? Or some with ealier firmware? I am using 1.26.401 and do not have this problem.

I don't own a One X (yet) but maybe it's a setting or it depends on the codecs of the movie used. On my SGS2 there is a setting to force 2d hw acceleration under development options, try toggling it
have this issue aswell. comming up sometimes in browser.
ok i watched the video and i can see it's occurring in a specific scenario when the menu drops down
I can safely say it might very well be a kernel problem, most custom GB kernels on the Desire HD had a similar problem when an HD video is played in portrait, only the official kernel worked well but then we had to wait for HTC to give us the source
but why some have it and others don't? despite being on same firmware?
usually a device have different configurations internally, such as two/three different sources for the screen, camera or sensors, there might be a conflict with a specific combination and hence again a kernel problem
or a random Tegra3 related memory leak that needs plugging
third possibility might be a defect somewhere in the device or SOC, but after watching this video i think its unlikely

I don't know if i should DOA it, you pay hell of money and you get this feeling.
This is a widespread hardware problem not a driver issue. Some samples have it and others don't even though they are on the same software version.

yea i already know this one, seems similar to the above, unless the nudging on the screen is physically causing it, can also be graphics acceleration drivers issue
like i said on the Desire HD whenever video acceleration get messed up it shows similar corruption and its all software related, we know T3 accelerates video by NEON in each core and also in the battery saver core, its definitively an NV mess
if nativestranger is correct then HTC have a disaster on their hands, still even hardware issues if figured out can be plugged by software like HTC disabled the 2d core in certain Sensation configurations
I have the same issue, dont know if i should exchange it or just wait for an update... Gonna send this video to HTC.

It's very sporadic. I just got the YouTube glitch too, when the video is in HD it glitches like crazy. These glitches also happens in the browser and the notification bar. But sometimes it.dosent look like in the video, it more like "noise" on the screen, but never lasts long enough to get it on camera... So people might.not be able to reproduce it.

That issue is software related, the video directly above it appears to be a sence UI problem. the one on the main tread i can't replicate even with 2d hardware rendering.

Nice find, when i change launcher i can't get the bug. Can you other try it to?
Edit: you don't need to change launcher, pull down the status bar when you are in a app that is not sene or htc related.

I've had it happen twice in camera mode with the same banding, and once with full screen banding and green blocks... getting a replacement tomorrow

I tried with GOlauncher and i couldnt provoke it to glitch, i fastpressed the notification bar but nothing happend so i guess its a Sense 4.0 problem?
---------- Post added at 12:47 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:22 AM ----------
Could you try this:
Go into safemode:
1. Press " power key " for power on device
2. Wait until "HTC logo" appears on screen
3. Press and hold " Volume down key " until entering OS
4. " Safe Mode " text will appears on the lower left of screen Safe mode will disable all 3rd party apps and only preinstalled apps will work, this is done because some of 3rd party apps can interfere with your phone functionality.
In safe mode try to fastpress the notification bar couple/plenty times
to try provoke the glitches, i cant provoke them.. In safe mode all 3rd part apps are off, could this problem have to do something with 3rd party apps?

In all 10 one x I am having similar appearance of status bar, this is widespread problem, i dont know how everyone is ignoring this or if all india has received defective handsets
here is video, I request to all of you to try to repeat what i am doing & post results on your one x
No go for me. I don't see the same issue.
***EDIT***
With more practice and a little more pressure i got it show up
I can replicate this issue, but not in general use.
I can only make it happen when moving my finger left & right whilst I have the notification bar dropped a little bit.
Its not something I would ever do when using my phone, nor have I ever produced this movement in my past android devices.
However, if i do perform this particular action, I can replicate it.

Dont worry this is not isolated to india. 3 in 4 one x handsets i tried on display in singapore has this problem.
Thank You it appears not to be hardware then!!!
HTC should acknowledge this!!
How can we make them aware!!
already discussed, this is most likely a software bug it occurs when the status bar turns from solid to transparent, roms with a solid bar don't have it

The problem rarely happens for me, but it did happen even when the bar was solid inside the app tray.
After that glitch it will affect full screen applications like camera/landscape YouTube etc but after a while, it'll "fix" itself. Weird.
Never had artifacts while video chatting on Skype so far though.

question is why it should come up in the first instance!!!
This is a sense error. Nothing that can't be fixed.
This error is related to the sense (launcher). Most probably caused by the transparent <-> black status bar transition.
This is NOT a hardware bug. A simple way to confirm this is that when using a third party launcher like apex launcher, which doesn't have a transparent status bar, this bug does not show up.
It's just another one of those immature software bugs. 1.26.xxx have many of these. Lets just hope future HTC updates fix these.

Tried it with another launcher (Apex/Nova) and it still happens, unfortunately.
But I do believe it's a software bug because if it's hardware then the screen should be producing artifacts constantly. Right now, after the notification bar screws up then only full screen applications such as camera screw up as well.

Umm I actually duplicated the problem and I was using Nova Launcher. Its not easy to for me to do but I do agree its a sw bug.

People are only verifying that it is a SW bug. And whether its minor or not is besides the point. We identify and feed that information back to HTC so their SW gets better.

Are there any known ways to tweak this behaviour or work around it? I'm finding it very annoying, as I'm using something like PVStar+ to play YouTube in the background (for audio), and suddenly it stops working because the One X has decided to kill it mid song or whatever.
When it starts killing active audio stream, I begin to have problems :-(

The only negatives was smaller benchmark scores, nothing else seemed slow with the multitasking enhacements.
HTC really know how to limit us, s-on crap, this multitasking lack and camera locked to 2MB pics. Fixed 2/3, multitasking and photos just under 8MB for colourful , detailed scenes. And we can install custom roms with a little inconvienence. Almlst 3/3 HTC your practices suck.
Note: I searched forum for screen flicker issue, but it wouldn't let me reply to the thread for some reason, so I'm creating a new one here.
Phone : Samsung Galaxy S3 SGH-i747m, ICS, not rooted.
Hi guys
I noticed when I'm typing a message or email, the screen would flicker sometimes, its so quick that if you blink you'll miss it, I know I'm being picky about it because its an expensive phone. So I did some more tests on it, I thought it might be due to samsung keyboard so I installed third party keyboard and noticed flicker again, then I installed sms pro, still noticed flicker; noticed flicker in email app as well as gmail app. At this point I thought it might have something to do with the software(sending keyboard signals to the operating system?) since it only happens when I type. So I did another test, but this time in SMemo and I didn't notice any flicker, I was puzzled here, so I tested 5 times for straight 15 minutes straight, no flicker.
I noticed that in all the apps I tested except SMemo there was something in common - traditional "textbox" object, whenever I typed in a typical textbox, I noticed flicker. So I downloaded few note taking applications which were using typical textbox and non-typical textbox(not sure how many different text objects are there in android, I haven't started android app development yet.) so I noticed flicker in apps with typical textbox, and didn't with non-typical textbox.
So I was wondering if you guys can do a similar test on your phone to confirm whether the flickering exists on your phone or not. I'll be relieved to know that I'm not the only one with this flickering issue, and hopefully Jelly Bean update will fix it.
To reproduce, just open a messaging app and start tapping on the letters from Q to M one by one.
Side Note: I did send the phone for repair in case it was a hardware issue, they couldn't reproduce the issue for some reason, reloaded the firmware and sent it back to me. sigh
tldr: Screen flickers when typing in any other app except SMemo.
You didn't search very hard, or you would know that the flickering is a known issue. That can be fixed by either raising your minimum clock speed to around 384mhz, remove your under volt settings, and disable hw overlays in dev settings.

Undervolting requires a kernel that supports it as well ad an app to control the voltage of the CPU. While the ktoonsez kernel does support undervolting, you stated you didn't know how to change the settings. I am assuming you never undervolted your CPU.
Are you using ktoonsez's newest kernel? His older kernels were undervolted and did not have stock settings

Crap, I just made an ass of myself, thought you said you had different kernel.
Sorry bud, haven't heard of the screen flickering issue on completely stock phone.
Hmmm...well, I don't have this issue.
But, I know the power saving adjusts the refresh rate: try disabling that if it's enabled.
Also, you didn't change any settings in developer options, did you? Like show screen updates?
What apps do you have installed? I know my brightness adjustment app did funky things with my screen when I first installed it.
Or did this happen right when you got the phone?
I don't know know a lot about backing up, but you could reset your phone and see if it still happened?

I already tried disabling power saving, the frequency of screen flicker reduced but it still flickers.
None of the setting is enabled in developer options.
I dont have lot of apps installed, may be one or two, texting app and google chrome and other apps which already came with the phone.
I already tried resetting to factory settings, but that too didnt solve the problem.
It doesnt flicker when I type in SMemo, but it does in other apps, this is the thing which I dont understand.

Same thing is happening to me, some help would be greatly appreciated.
so no one else is having this issue?
Hi
I bought the Note II 2 days ago, and I ended trying Google Street View in compass mode... Nice software...
As probably you know, in this mode the orientation of the handset controls what you see on the screen, offering a better 3d experience than simply sliding your finger on the screen to change the viewpoint (try it: maps --> select a place with street view available --> enter street view mode --> press "menu" left virtual touch --> select compass mode, and play with it!).
This is all nice and well, except that I experience on my phone a serious random jitter (mostly azymuthal) in the street view: a few degrees more or less, not much but enough to make you dizzy after a while. This happens also in Google Skymap.
I tried to recalibrate the gyroscope, also had a look in the hidden "test" menu (dialed *#0*#), and installed marketplace compass apps which offer calibration tools... to no avail. I also changed position in my flat to check for stray magnetic fields effects, but nothing new.
I know there are other devices forum threads where this type of problems is explored (not much as far as i know), the point here is I would like people with Note 2 at hand to check if they experience the same type of problems: I'd like to know if this could be related to a hardware problem, or if it is another screw up by Google/Samsung ...! :silly:
What do you think ?
Same thing here, I've had my T-Mobile GNote2 for just under two weeks and when I tried the compass this am I found the same jitter you describe, using GPS Test app and the diagnostic mode you found. Started a thread in T-Mobile GNote2 here, looks like it wasn't a priority for Samsung.
I'm getting gitter in Street View too. Damn annoying.
Sent from my Galaxy Note 2 using Tapatalk 2
Bad jitter here too .... and this was one of the features that seemed best to try out on the larger screen... Hopefully there will be a software fix. If some people would post that they have no jitter in street view compass mode, then I'd go see if it was just my/some units with the defect and exchange while in my 14 days.
I can confirm the jittering on my Note 2. It's pretty annoying. Calibration hasn't worked for me.
---------- Post added at 07:33 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:19 PM ----------
In other compass apps, I can't experience any jittering. So I think it must be directly related to Street View and how they read/process the values from the compass. Maybe the interpolation is wrong?
Well, I can tell you that I exchanged TWICE my Note II since I posted the problem on the forum (one was exchanged for another reason)... and the jitter was and is here on the three handsets.
The last one I got works marginally better, but the effect is still quite annoying.

That's exactly what I'm saying! I actually called Samsung's main technical services department and the person I spoke to didn't have a clue what I was on about, so I had to describe it to her carefully. And by the way, yes I've tried it on all the available compass apps on the play store and they all have the same issue. To compare, I used my dad's S3, totally fine. This is one of the reasons I bought the phone in the first place, to use the street view in compass mode after seeing it on the S3 but its a total letdown, which leads me to believe that its very likely a hardware issue, and that's what I'm dreading.

Maybe it also could be a software problem. I don't think that Samsung includes defect hardware sensors in all of their Note 2 devices (therefor they have extensive hardware tests). I hardly believe they hadn't had the time to write a proper kernel driver with interpolation for the magnetometer. And probably all other kernels base on the kernel sources, Samsung has published. So this could be an inherited problem. Would be interesting if the Note 2 and the S3 share the same magnetometer sensor. Can somebody elaborate on this? If so, then we need to compare the kernel sources for both sensors and try do debug the problem step by step.

Well I'm now on stock 4.1.2, and sad to say its the same problem. Absolutely nothing has changed. I think we're stuck with this issue guys, such a shame
it is a big samsung problem. it is on the S3 as well...
I had the same problem. I tried several compass applications from the market and celebrated the compass several times. The only thing that really helped to get the digital compass get stable is to turn off all wireless functions, including the phone, as well as the phone sound and power saving functions. I turned off anything that might produce a megnatic field in the phone, and then calebrated the compass again. Now the compass works fine after turning on everything.

I don't have this issue, better get it checked!
Guys I observed this closely and I found that this flickering occouring oly some times and it's clearly visible only in apps when I set a white wallpaper on homescreen can't see any flickering but at same time its there in browser gallery etc and when I touch screen it disapperas and reoccur when I didn't touch display but this flickering is present only for some time not continuous. I think it's not display problem but software glitch which all of u have and u guys might not noticed it

I took it to customer care yesterday and it was funny that the guy there showed me his note 3 which also have same flickering and they said that it's normal with amoled due to voltage variation at low brightness levels. So I left customer care without replacing display:victory:
Actually I don't want them to teardown my new phone so I thought of changing display after some time if it get more worse

am using latest 4.3 update I think it's problem with Indian INU firmware will be solved by 4.4 soon guess
I did a factory reset yesterday and kept brigtness above half till now I didnt have ny flickering.
I found this on web
There seems to be a
problem where the phone has problems
deciding if the software or hardware(CPU
vs. GPU) is what should be drawing the
screen… So this indecision causes it to
switch back and forth, redraw, etc….
Over at XDA there are lots of post relating
to this problem. Below is a temporary
solution to the problem
Here are the instructions!!
Temp Fix: (until they find/fix the problem)
1. Go to settings > about phone
2. Click “build number” 6 times fast
3. You’ll see “you’re now a developer” as
a notification at the bottom.
4. Go back to settings, you’ll now see
developer options above ‘about phone’.
5. Go in developer options, and click
“disable hardware overlays” under the
drawing section
This will fix the flickering!! The problem is
with android 4.2.x, the OS gets confused
and can’t decide if the CPU or the GPU
should be drawing the screen, so it flickers
do to it switching between the CPU and
GPU real fast…
Hope this helps anyone out there
experiencing this problem, and spread the
word to anyone else you know to make it
known! Loads of people are re flashing,
returning to stock, even returning their
phones because of this bug! So spread the
word to prevent others from making this
mistake.
