I've had this same HTC EVO 4G since the week it came out, rooted on Cyanogenmod (7.1 stable, currently), and I've never had a problem with the camera before.
Suddenly, the stock camera app and one other camera app (ProCapture) are broken. They show the live preview through the camera lense, but the little gallery box on the right is black (where you can see the most recent pic and tap it to open the full gallery).
BUT here's the weird part - some other camera apps work fine, Camera360 for example... so I don't think it's hardware.
I've already tried
- Clearing data
- Uninstalling "Camera.apk" stock app
- Uninstalling via Titanium
- Rebooting (duh)
- Fixing Permissions (through ROM Manager)
I'm at a loss. I can't use the video camera either, so can't record video right now (since that's part of the stock camera). It just FC after a few seconds.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
Have you changed kernels?

Hi,
I am facing this rather weird problem with my motorola defy.
A brief history: I live in India and I got my phone packed with Eclair and then i updated it to Froyo.
After that I rooted my defy and then installed MIUI Gingerbread.
But then again I started missing Blur and so I flashed a UK Motoblur rom on my Defy...
But since then the Camera is not working properly.
Actual Problem:
The camera application works fine. I mean it captures pictures and videos just as it should, but i see a black screen while doing so.
I start my camera application and its a black screen so is the case with camcoder.
I have attached a screen shot of my camera application to give you a better understanding of my problem...
I cant even watch youtube videos on my cell coz that too (videos) play with a black screen.
I dont understand what is the problem. I tried clearing the Camera application cache...but it does not help.
Is there anyone who can make me understand what is wrong with my phone.
Thanks
Have you installed 2ndinit bootmenu on the phone?

did you clear camera cache and thumbnails???
happened to me once
do a factory reset
apologies for n00bishly bumping a thread, but I have the same problem.
Since I rooted my phone and installed 2nd Init (I haven't flashed a new ROM yet, still on stock) youtube just gives me a black screen (sound is fine) and the same thing happens when I take a photo; the screen is visibily photo but takes a photo fine when I press the shutter
will a factory reset undo the SIM unlock?
Try uninstalling 2ndinit bootmenu.
Had the same issue, this is how it was resolved.
I made a thread before concerning my camera when I thought my camera just completely crapped out for no apparent reason, but after installing a few 3rd party camera apps, I found that MY camera ISN'T as dead as I thought. This is where things just get weird: the stock camera app constantly force closes when I open it. I tried reinstalling, a battery pull , clearing the gallery data, everything logical, but to no avail.
Now, when I use the camera up lg camera, the rear camera works like a dream, but it doesnt recognize my front facing shooter. Ita the same thing qith the paper camera app. Ive had this issue aince 4.0.4 to 4.1 to 4.1.1 & now Im running a 4.2 rom.
At first i swore it was a hardware problem, but now i have no clue WTF it actually is... Please help! Im fed up!
By chance, you haven't frozen or removed the stock gallery apk have you? I believe those two (camera and gallery) are married to one another and need to both be installed to work correctly.
Greetings, Xperia M, Build 15.1.C.2.8, Half-rooted (unable to do the full root, I don't know why so I can't do the RW thing)
Like most of you have probably noticed, the stock camera firmware has a bluish tint problem. The camera works great in the daytime, really good actually. But doing some camera app testing in a darkened atmosphere I took some pics in my bedroom with the flash, and the pics look really BLUE. My walls aren't blue, they are yellow haha. After testing with other android camera apps such as ProCapture, the pics look as they should (no blue walls). So it's obvious that it is the stock sony camera firmware that is at fault since other camera apps make the pics look normal.
So saying this I went ahead and froze (disabled) the stock camera app so I could launch ProCapture with the hardware shutter button. But now I have no video recording app ugh. So two-fold question please:
1) Is there a way to make our hardware shutter button open up a different camera app such as ProCapture? If so, how please? (Like mentioned above I was only able to half-root it, the full root instructions just haven't worked for me no matter how many times I tried)
2) If not, and I do have to disable the stock camera app so I can launch ProCapture with the hardware button, can you recommend me what video recording app I can install that can takeover just video recording duties? I think it would need to be for video recording only otherwise I may run into problems with the hardware shutter button again. It has been remarkably hard to find a video recording app on the app store! I have no idea why this is.
Thanks much for your help. BTW, I like the phone. For the price, I think it's really good. And more importantly, the size and shape fits me perfectly :fingers-crossed:
For your 1st question.... I'm not really sure on the x m but when I was still using an mtk phone I was able to change the camera button to open any app I want in android.policy.jar or was it framework.jar (cant recall).. Cant remember which smali it was but I stumbled on it via search for text using notepad++ ... I searched for com.android.gallery in our Xperia case you should search for semc.android.camera (not sure if thats the correct package name for the stock camera app) and change it with the package name of the camera app or whatevar app you want the camera button to launch

try this lg camera : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1677645
Thanks for the replies. As far as LGCamera goes, it seems to not have been updated in almost two years so I left that one alone. Did find an app called "A Better Camera" which also has video recording in it. So I disabled the stock camera and have just been using A Better Camera and it also launches from the hardware button. Better pics too in the dark with the flash. At least my yellow walls aren't blue
Edit: Okay, I have found a way to be able to launch a third party camera from the hardware button WITHOUT freezing (totally disabling) the stock camera app. This then will allow you to use a third-party camera app such as ProCapture etc (that don't have a built in video recorder), allow you to switch between the third-party app and the stock video recorder, but then also launch the third-party app using the hardware shutter button. In other words, the best of all solutions.
You need to at least half-root the Xperia-M (many threads found here how to do that) then get the AutoStarts app from the play store: (not allowed to post links yet). Just search AutoStarts from Michael Elsdörfer
Once you start AutoStarts, scroll down and find "Camera Button Pressed". Select Disable for all the cameras EXCEPT the one you want to use the hardware button for. You're done now. All the camera apps that you selected disable for will still work when using their icons, the one you didn't disable will be the one that starts with the hardware shutter button.
Note: I also tried the app "Default App Manager Pro" and set ProCapture as the default camera. But that didn't do anything, no effect on the hardware shutter button (still opened the stock camera). So far the AutoStarts method is the only one that has worked for me.
I just installed the camera application "ProCapture" from the Play Store (I got it originally for my HTC One S and it works pretty good) and noticed some annoying bug. If i open the app the preview screen keeps black(Taking pictures works fine). If I minimize the app or even go to settings and back to the preview the bug has been gone.
Anyone noticed this bug too or has got a solution for it? Cause "ProCapture" is really awesome!
btw i'm on CM11 Dark (Beta 2) and normal camera app works fine
hello,
i'm having issues with stock camera app.
when ever i take panorama photos and try to view them in gallery (regardless of app used), i get this error message:
"cannot display panorama / the image file does not contain the required panorama metadata".
so far i tried with default gallery app and quickpick. neither of them are able to open the panorama file.
i also tried with google camera app. this seems to take panoramas without issue.
the only time / place i am able to view the panorama files is right after i take them and use the "recent pic" option from within the camera app.
right now i`m on android 7.1.1 with OS 4.1.6. unlock bootloader, TWRP, rooted device, stock OS / kernel.
already tried to clear camera app and gallery app data/cache. also did a wipe of cache / dalvik for entire phone. all in vain.
so .. if anyone has other suggestions ...
thanks.
In QuickPic, don't press on the displayed panorama icon but pinch-to-zoom instead.
Also keep in mind that QuickPic is noticeably slower on Nougat and might take some time to render the photo in full resolution.
The fastest gallery for Nougat at the moment is Simple Gallery, which also shows panoramas without issues for me.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.simplemobiletools.gallery
The stock gallery doesn't give me any issues with panoramas, but it's a crappy slow app and I don't use it.
Nothing you can do about this. Something is fundamentally wrong with the way panorama-metadata is stored with their stock camera app.
Also taking panoramas in general is a PITA. I tried numerous shots at the beach last week. All were unusable because of countless stitching errors.
Clearing app data did not help unfortunately and It's not the only thing weird, also taking panoramas with google camera doesn't refocus for each shot.
Even some few OP5 camera reviews mentioned the same behavior. I really hope OnePlus fixes their app eventually.
