Hi guys,
As the title mentions I have problems updating my Superuser app. I'm currently running 2.1 and would like to upgrade... The fix program doesn't work for me either...
Is there an other way to upgrade? Or is in imbedded in my Amon_RA V2.0.0 root?
Can someone help me ?
Cheers

Try updating your SU package via recovery. You can download the .zip from the official site ("Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip").
Be sure to have at least 1 MB of free /system space, because v3 is quite large compared to v2.
Will this erease my data? Or does it only change superuser?
Greetz
No, this will not touch your data. All this does is overwrite the current SU APK [/system/app/Superuser.apk] and SU binary [/system/bin/su] version with the latest one. Note: before flashing, use a root explorer-type app to check if the APK and the binary are in the locations enclosed in brackets (as this is where the script will install them). Some cooks, as ChainsDD has pointed out, put the binary in a different folder than that it should be in. Oh, and again, make sure you have at least 1 MB free on the /system partition.

Hey Guys.
I "rooted" my HTC Desire by T-Mobile using Unrevoked3.
Then i flashed a Pre-Rooted Froyo:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=773997
Now i wanted to use the "Root Explorer" to remove Apps like "FriendStream" and stuff.
I was able to delete them, but the still keep running.
Then i rebooted and they are still there although deleted with Root Explorer and Super-User permit.
Is it possible that unrevoked is just a "*****-root" i can just use to flash Images but not for mounting /system (R/W) and removing Apps?
What can i do now? Hope u can help me

the desire dosent have an unlocked spl yet so even a rooted desire dosent have r/w access to /system/ when booted, there are two ways around it, either delete the apps using adb in recovery mode or flash a rom that utilises the new file overlay system that will give you r/w access to /system/
It more or less sounds like you don't understand the meaning of being root. On a system like android, running something with root or superuser permissions will normally allow the app or command to have full access and rights. This is gained by adding a binary called su and the superuser app, which is for controlling which apps gets root access. So actually unrevoked or any other root methods is not about gaining root, but about being able to put these files on the system partition, which it also does.
Now this is not the case on newer HTC handsets, because they have nand protection, which prevent write access to /system even though an app is run with root access. this is controlled by hboot, and in order to allow rw to /system, we will need an s-off hboot. This is not yet available, but the unrevoked team is working on it.
So the socalled "*****" root just shows me that you don't know, what you are talking about
edit: for now if you want to remove apps, you will need to flash a new rom, where you have removed the apk files yourself, or you will have to learn some adb commands, which you can use to edit system partition while in recovery with rw access.
Using adb in Recovery to backup/remove them is very simple (for removal i.e adb shell rm dir/name.apk) however many default apps break other workings and/or cause confusing unexpected errors if removed. I learnt first hand when removing many pre-installed apps. So be careful and always backup.

How can I tell which roms utilize the new file overlay system? Im also having the same problem especially with programs starting up after I've disabled them.

We have s-off now. Look for that, or use adb.

In a lot of the custom roms threads I see that people are always asking the cooks to update the system apps as soon as a new one is released.
Rather than us users constantly hassling the cooks to do this, could somebody post an 'idiots' guide how to update the system apps ourselves?
I have seen a few threads about how to remove apps using adb, but none on how to update them.
Any help would be appreciated, not just by the users, but probably by the overworked cooks too
Cheers.
EDIT: by this I mean a way to update the apk in the system folder rather than the date to save space on the phones memory.
One way is to open the market and click on the 'downloads' link at the top and it will give you a list of installed apps and the ones highlighted in red have updates.
Another way is to search the market or a free app called 'aTrackDog' which will check all your apps for updates.
Thanks, but that is not what I meant. I should have made it clearer in my question.
What I want is this: a way to update the applications so that the updated apk goes into the system folder rather than the data folder. That way the update doesn't take up any more of the precious space on my phone.
I'll edit the OP to show this.
But thanks anyway for your help.
Don't you mean the fact that certain apps included in roms cant be updated. Only possible by flashing an updated version of that rom.
Wrong section.

No, that's not true. Often when a cook produces their own rom they will release an "Update pack" when a system app has been updated (such as Flash or Maps). For an example, see here under 'updated system apps':
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=773997
What I am asking for is if anybody knows how to use adb to update apps on the system partition. When updating from the market a the update takes place on the data folder, not the system one.

That is something like it. What I want is a guide to what to do to update these apps when an update is out in the market place. Something like being able to update the app from the market, but then move the new apk to the system folder so to save space on data.
Thing is, if you're using a cooked ROM you're likely to be using A2SD+ which makes the need to not have system updates redundant as you've got your EXT partition. The other way would just be to edit the original ZIP file and reflash the ROM without a wipe

That is not entirely true, even though I sport A2SD+ (and it's 1/3 free) my /data is always begging for room... I'm always at the 15MB-free-limit.
Then you've either got a LOT of apps storing data or something's not right
Small dirty 0.1beta guide
I'll use teppic's update zip as example (hope he doesn't mind), sample of his updateapps.zip can be found in this thread -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=773997
1. Install the update from Market, then open Appmonster and backup it on SD. After that, uninstall the update, to free up space.
2. Open the update.zip with WinRar (don't unpack it), you'll see 2 folders
META-INF
system
Open the inside of META-INF till you get to update-script and open it for editing, here's the example:
Code:
show_progress 0.1 0
delete SYSTEM:app/YouTube.apk
delete SYSTEM:app/YouTube.odex
delete SYSTEM:app/Facebook.apk
delete SYSTEM:app/Facebook.odex
delete_recursive DATA:data/com.android.vending
copy_dir PACKAGE:system SYSTEM:
set_perm_recursive 0 0 0755 0644 SYSTEM:app
show_progress 0.1 10
Replace/add/remove .apk's (you can add .apk without .odex) in this list, as those commands will delete existing apps from /system/app on phone
The rest of the script will copy the content of the other folder you saw before (system with subfolder app), so you want to add/remove apk's you like to there. Remember to use WinRar's function to add the file to archive, everything done here's is inside of the archive. When you're done, save the update-script, check everything again and close WinRar.
3. Flash the zip ;]
or do it manually:

I do think A LOT fits (about 300 apps installed)...
That's exactly what I wanted.
Thanks for the help, everybody.
Does this work on a Rooted (Unrevoked) phone with HTC's Original Froyo?
- I've been following teppic74's thread for some time now, and for every app that get an updated I get closer to flashing his ROM... but if I can just update my apps I wouldn't have to go through the process of reinstalling everything else after...

Nice!
That means my weekend is saved, I 'm gonna give myself some updates!
- Thanks!
One thing...if using the push and pull commands in adb to move the apk files to the system partition, what happens to the .odex files? Do you move them as well?

.odex files are only on some custom rom's, you probably dont have them.
Hello again...
I kind of never got around to doing this last weekend - both because lack of time but also because the more I read the more worries I have. (Don't know when I lost my "gung ho" attitude, but age seems to turn me into a chicken...)
Anyway - I wanted to ask one important question.
How do I keep an eye on the space I have available for updating my apps? What if the updates are so much larger than the apps I'm replacing, what will happen then?
I read in teppic74's thread that he recommended some adjustments to save space, but how do I know what I have to "play" with? Is there a good app to read available space in "system"?
Thanks in advance,
gosa
I can't update or install some apps. Market says that there's low disk space, but i have 110mb free.
Someone else had this issue? What should I do?
I'm using MIUI 1.7.22 with ITA language pack.
And I'm on CM7 r2 HBOOT.
http://forums.miuiandroid.com/showt...e-to-install-large-apps-like-MAPS-from-market.
check out that thread. there is a flashable ZIP that you flash from recovery that works.
you might then have to use terminal emulator to run commands:
su
a2sd repair
Or you flash this zip from recovery (found in miui xj thread here on xda):

I am having a really weird problem trying to get ad free working on Cyanogen 7. for some reason Ad Free is failing to write to the hosts file and usually ends up deleting all content instead of updating the file. The symlink option merely leads to the hosts file being completely deleted.
I have tried remounting /system as rw using mount -o rw,remount /system through an SU'ed terminal session but every time I then try to make any changes to the hosts file, either editing the content or manually creating a symlink, I get an Out Of Memory error. This is on a more or less virgin Cyanogen install.
I should mention the reason I installed Cyanogen was because I was seeing pretty much exactly the same behaviour under my previous O2 install.
Does anyone have any ideas what on earth is going on and how I can fix it?
Oh hang on, I am still S-ON. That is bad, right?
i was on s-on till last week and adfree worked for me at this time
but adfree was already included in the ROM is used (Runnymede AIO)

Hello,
I was using Marvellous Sense 3.5 ROM with increased internal memory by int2extv2.
But I like CyanogenMod on other phone, where many more things could be customized so I have installed this ROM: [rom][unofficial][4.2.2][cm10.1] with Gapps, which is working fine. However after installing int2extv2 nothing happens.
Using RootBrowser I found that autorun file (/etc/init.d/40int2ext) is empty. I tried to remove that file and copy/paste from SD card. But the result is the same (file is created with 0 size). Then I connected to phone with adb shell where I found that the filesystem is read-only, so I decided to make the same things in recovery.
In recovery using adb shell I mounted system blokdevice (read-write), but I was not able to create 40int2ext file (not enough space). I deleted one ringtone and finally 40int2ext script was created (This probably is not the right method, because right now adb shows "unauthorized" device).
After reboot my device shows more internal memory, but I am not able to install any app (no more space). What is the reason? Read-only system? I tried some other 4.2 android ROM, but I was not able to enable int2ext scritp. Does Android 4.2 is compatible with int2ext script?
Sorry about this long post. Tried to post under ROM thread, but I have no enough post written

Firstly sorry for wrong link. Name of ROM is correct, but LINK is redirecting to another one. I have installed this ROM: [rom][unofficial][4.2.2][cm10.1] (25.10.2013)
About Gapps version: 20130812 (from http://goo.im/gapps it is correct for CM10.1 and Android 4.2)

That's what you did wrong...... Internal storage of our phones isn't big enough for the complete gapps package for Android 4.1 and above, use a stripped down version of them found in the thread
You are right, I missed that thing. Now it is working. Thanks.
BTW. Do you know what is the difference between gapps-jb-20130301-lite.zip (34,5MB) and gapps-jb-20130301-light.zip (8.26MB)?

Just a few apps added and removed here and there, see which one you require by trying them
