Ya you'll lose everything so take the back up off your sd and put it on your pc then format and try it. I think the previous is interfering with the new backup

Also remove everything else. You lose everything on it

The first question is are you backing up to internal or external storage? The second question is what was the exact error message?

I am backing up to the sd card. And it says .... Error when backing up /data

Sorry. Generally when you receive an error message in CWR it gives you a "(status #)" at the end off the message. It helps in the identifying of the root cause of the issue.
Before formatting the card I'd try backing up to internal storage to see if you receive the same error. If that doesn't work flash a different recovery and try again.
If that doesn't with transfer all odd you're info off the SDcard to your PC and format the card from the PC. Reinsert the card into your phone and first it from the phone. Attempt backup again.
I'd it doesn't work you've probably got a dying card.
Good luck!

Sd card mounted as read only

Hey my phone keeps popping up with an error saying sd card mounted as read only. I've read about fixes bit they haven't worked for me. My question isn't whether anyone has a fix but whether I should unroot my phone before taking it to sprint

Yup. Use an RUU. You can get them here:

Before you unroot and return it. I had the same problem, and was able to fix it by booting to recovery, Mounting USB through recovery, and using my computer to perform a full (not quick) Fat32 format on the card.
Same thing happened to me, its more than likely a SD card issue. I had to format mine to get it to work, but yes its better to be safe than sorry root before returning

How many backups do you currently have? Remove some old one to make room for new ones

Did you rename the file? If you did, it needs to not have any spaces. Soithastolooklikethis.

sd is full
My guess it's because your sd is full, make some room and try again. Backup important files to your pc and save a couple gigs for the space the backup needs. Also, I have found that backing up from the rom manager app and rebooting recovery and backing up from cwm recovery produces different md5 sums, so I generally only backup while in recovery and not from the rom manager app itself.
hi folks,
thanks for the replies but the sd card isn't full as i've formatted it so there's no way the external is full.
come on, i'm not that big of a noob

I've done tons of back ups in the past month, and restores, but I just recently started getting the error as in the op, and now it runs until it gets to image back up, and says it errors backing that up, and then quits. I have 6 GB free on my card, and I only keep the last successful back up in case of fails like this. I haven't changed anything on my own, and the same ROM I backed up last week I now can't. Somewhere something went bad I'm guessing, but I'm glad it's not me that did something wrong. I will try an internal save to see if that works. If that works then I will wipe my card's CW file, and try a fresh one. Maybe just doing a complete factory reset, and fresh new ROM will do the trick. I'll keep ya all posted since more than one is having this issue.

I had the same problem. To solve it all I did was open ROM Manager and reflash CWM.

No go for me. Just re-flashed CWM, and it still fails trying to back up image to either internal or external. ugh
Well I flashed a new rom from scratch, and now it works again. The old one must have gotten corrupt.

CWM 5027 Issue

I'm having a problem backing up and restoring. When backing up it gets to the end of backing up data and says error. When restoring it gets to android.secure and gives an error. Running Tuesday rom with blu pulsar theme also have a battery mod flashed. Any suggestions / ideas?

For the longest time, I used your identical setup. Loved that ROM and theme! I still use CWR 5.0.2.7. I made several backups with no issues. I guess you haven't changed anything as far as the backup location goes. All backups are still saved to your external SD card?
The only suggestions I could come up with would be to try and reflash CWR, and/or reformat your external SD card. I've noticed when something gets out of whack with the SD cards (corrupt file or something) it can play havoc with our devices. I've had it happen, and after a reformat it cleared up my problem.
Just a thought and good luck...
Make sure your sdcard isn't full

is it possible, that being a flash-aholic is messing up my phone?

I'm noticing errors on roms i never used to notice.. like a day after flashing, random apps like messages and keyboard are FC'ing, when they never used to do that.
Is there a guide somewhere how to completely wipe every trace of use on my phone and start fresh? I'm afraid of wiping away some critical file and bricking my phone by just wiping everything I can find though.

Go into CWM and Factory Reset -> Wipe Cache -> Wipe Dalvik Cache. Then go to mounts and storage and Format /data, Format /system. I normally format /sdcard as well, but MAKE SURE YOU HAVE BACKED UP TO AN EXTERNAL SD CARD.
i always due all except format SD card.. maybe thats why things are in conflict.. ive never done that one...
With the new method of using the internal SD as the phone data storage this is entirely possible. If there are files/databases for apps stored on the SD that is incompatible with the apps in questions problems can arise. I would suggest you make a full copy of your internal SD to a safe location and format, then after the ROM install if you find you are missing app data for something that cant be easily rebuilt you can copy that app's data back specifically to avoid resurrecting the problem.
Sounds like a wise move. Thank you sir.
I imagine I need to put the recovery image back in the sd card immediately, or is cwm smart enough to save that one?

No, the recovery is stored in its own partition and up until the last version of CWM i used (6.0 something) there is no option to modify the recovery partition at all. I switched to TWRP for multiple reasons, one of which is the ability to include a backup of the recovery partition in backups.
Is it perfectly safe to format the internal sd card? I've made a backup of the sd card a little while ago contemplating this but couldn't find any good info on this. I'm more or less in the same boat and would like to start 100% fresh

Yeap :good:, the only risk of formatting the internal stoarge is losing the data on it, big shocker huh , unless of course you were to format to an unsupported file system. I dont think this is even possible without trying real hard to do so.
Cool cool thanks man yea I'm not worried about any of the data on the internal

If it is just applications data for the most part I just get rid of it and let the app use its new fresh installed data, even just delete the folder when I have no idea what it's for or who put it there. Because, if the app or system needs it, it will just put it back. Personal data is all I worry about, but I back that up in Google contacts and such so they just show up when it sync.
And I just save zips, and movies, and apk and such.
Then wipe the rest, no worries mate, I don't bother with backup restore anymore.

Is it ok to complete change sd cards when I've got a custom recovery installed?

Ok, so this is probably a stupid question, but the last time I tried to do a factory reset on my phone and install and format a new sd card I ended up soft bricking my phone and I don't want that to happen again because I don't have a computer at my house. But...if I'm running stock JB 4.1.2 flashed thru odin, rooted, and I have TWRP installed can I change sd cards without a problem? Or, are there files on my current sd card that the phone needs to read the recovery or root or whatever? Thanks.

I may be wrong but I'd say you need your SD card with your recovery on it to be in your phone.. I've never really tried removing the SD card.. Good question tho.

Thanks! That's exactly what I was thinking but I needed a second opinion. I am wanting to switch sd cards bc I've got way too many pictures on it and I really don't have time to borrow someone's computer and sit down and go thru what I to keep, then organize them all and put them on disc....so I was hoping to just start fresh on a new card for now, but it doesn't look like it's gonna be that easy. So, would I have to put the new sd card in my phone then flash the recovery via odin? Or would I have to reflash the stock Rom or what? Any suggestions?

I don't know what to tell you. I have no problem switching SD cards. Did it earlier today.
My guess would be to make sure to have either twrp or what ever recovery you use on the new SD card you want to use.

When you flash a recovery it is installed to your phones internal memory. Not to the external SD card.
