[Q] Glide freezing up - Samsung Captivate Glide

Hello,
I've been experiencing annoying freezing up issues with my second-hand Glide. In all cases, the freeze happens with the screen off and a race condition ensues discharging the battery (even when plugged into power). Searching around, I've seen a good number of references to this problem:
androidforums.com/samsung-captivate-glide/462710-freeze-ups-anyone.html
gsmarena.com/samsung_i927_captivate_glide-reviews-4071.php
comparecellular.com/cell-phones/galaxy-s-glide
but I have not been able to find any resolution. Sometimes I feel like this: xkcd.com/979 . In essence I'm trying to determine if this is a hardware fault or something which can be fixed by software. Seeing minimal Glide development does not help since there are very limited options for ROMs. Since this device did get a nod for ICS, there's still hope in that, but until then have to suffer.
Anyone seen a resolution other than exchange? Warranty?

Unfortunately, this is quite common but there are few users that did not had any freezes since day one of their Glides.
One issue is, you have your Google calendar sync and you have "Auto Sync" active. This leads for the Calendar to Sync improperly during sleep mode resulting in a sync loop, which makes the device unresponsive thus, wont wake up upon pressing power/lock key. Solution, uncheck the "Auto Sync" function in Settings, Manually sync everything, or uncheck the "Sync Calendar on your Google account.
The other thing which is very common, is leaving wifi on while charging. This results on the same issue above but the reason is not clear. I experience this one in 1 out of 5 chances, so I turn wifi off or set the wifi sleep policy to "when screen turns off" in Settings. Happens on stock and custom ROM(s), except when Cranium Kernel is flashed.
In conclusion, I never thought that these are hardware issues ATM, for my previous Samsung devices also have these, but is eliminated by updating firmware, or flashing a custom ROM.

Thank you for the suggestions. I will verify wifi sleep policy as well as disable calendar sync to see if it helps. And now that there is some activity regarding ICS for this unit, maybe I'll get to test a new ROM to see if it helps.
thanks again

Neither unsynching google+calendars, or the WiFi+charging solutions worked for me.
Is there any hope for those of us with no immediate remedy?
Has Samsung even acknowledged that this is an issue?
When do you predict us getting an ICS update that will solve the issue?
Its a damn shame since I'm ****in loving this phone so far, yet i can't even use it when I want to sometimes.

Well yeah....I can confirm. I reflashed my device and restore my apps...did not do any mods and whatnot. Used it for a day and charged it overnight, no internet. And bam! Sleep Death. Like i said, this is common, and does not think that this is a hardware issue for a lot is experiencing it. So for now, dont left your glide charging overnight, or if you will, download a night clock, or use the stock desk clock. You will have a clock beside you and will keep your device awake all night.

Interesting, I don't have that "sleep death" issue.
Do you have any idea when we'll receive the ICS update?

The issue you addressed is so called "sleep death." A few weeks past, ATT announced that 10 of their devices will get ICS in less than a month (including the Glide). No word from Rogers when will they update their version of the device.

Unfortunately AT&T did not state when they would push the update as well they only named the devices that will get it.

Has Samsung acknowledged the Sleep Death issue, and whether they will resolve it in the next OTA update?

I believe Samsung is already knowledgeable about the issue....unfortunately, it is not that easy to make a software update just to solve 1 problem (on the contrary to the Captivate SGH-I897 with GPS issues on Eclair, ATT immediately released a FW update within less than 2 weeks to fix it). And, even though I said the Sleep Death is quite common, not all of the users have this, so again, maybe unless a considerable large number of users (or all users) experience this, they might look into it. So I also believe that Samsung (along with ATT/Rogers) will correct the issue on the next update. When? Heaven knows.
If you are experiencing the sleep death more than twice a day, without doing anything, or if you believe non of your installed programs is at fault, and you are still in your return period, I suggest you exchange your device. You might get a unit that is unaffected. My Sleep Death only occurs when I left the phone charging for extended periods of time, like charging overnight which I always do. As I've mentioned, I keep the device awake like installing a night clock application or activating the stock desk clock app.

Well I'm going to try turning on the night clock app this night and see if that stops the sleep death.
And I bought the phone second hand off craigslist. Even if its within the 90-day period, I doubt I'll get any warranty/return ability as I am not the original customer.

interesting problem, will this should hold me back from buying it when my friends will be in the states?

I can't say.....but in my case, the issue is not really that serious in my part. As I said, when I left my device plugged in extended periods of time, then the Sleep Death might trigger....but I never experience any Sleep Deaths while the phone is unplugged and using it throughout the day (on the contrary of the OP's post). In fact, my last sleep death was 10 days previous....it's been reliable and does the job.

I got the sleep death once. It just happened but I have not had it again. I must admit it is scary but I heard you can flash another rom as that is supposed to fix it. I do have the stock rom from Rogers and have not rooted yet.

Well that is a good sign....when did you experience? how? please keep your observations. for me, I can replicate the issue by plugging/charging it....I do also have the stock Rogers ROM and I am rooted......my only tip is, don't leave your Glide charging in extended periods (more than 3-4 hours or so).

i have a therory about that, as some other user mentaioned when they useed adracat kernel (that is OC) the problem is gone. maybe samsung uses a underclocked tegra2 prossesor and that tha problem.

No the charging for extended periods does not matter. Every night I set my phone to charge at around Midnight and unplug it at around 6:30 AM. I also have Wifi on. I heard it was WIFI and charging that did it. Luckily I am not experiencing it. Gabby did you flash and install the Clock Work Mod? I am thinking about it.

this is exactly what I am experiencing....and I can replicate this issue about 8/10 times....well this should hopefully be fixable via FW update (like my SGH-I896 from 2.1 to 2.2).
Yes I have CWMR installed and is very handy....I am now going back to flash OsiMood ROM for I think I already know what triggers the Sleep Death specially in stock ROMs....

Will flashing a new ROM be an issue for me when the OTA ICS update drops?
I read that rooting your phone would be problematic when ICS comes.
If its not an issue, which ROM should I use that will get rid of the Sleep Death issue?
And suppose the ICS fixes the sleepdeath. Will I be able to unroot my phone and revert it back to stock so that I can put ICS on it?
Sorry for the long post!

Some people have stated that once you install a Rooted Rom you will no longer get pushed the updated from your service provider. They stated this from Gingerbread 2.3.5 to 2.3.6
In order to go back to stock you have to somehow back up what you have before you flash anything or find it on the web. I am not sure about this but have heard of others doing this.
Your other option is use a ROM that someone cooks with ICS when it becomes available. I have heard of many people toying with getting this set up.

Stock ROM or custom? Any overclocking?
The phone powers up if you soft reset, correct?
Well, I found out it was a small problem with the rom.
It was a custom rom, and I just installed a different one and it works flawlessly.
With the other one, the light sensor did not work either.
Also, I dropped my phone the other day, and a really small spring fell out.
And the back plain on my screen is loose and opens up easily..
Which ROM?
I hate to hijack this thread but i am having the exact same problem. Basically when i put my phone to sleep its hit or mess as to if it will wake. It seems to have started when i flashed Energy ROM. It was terrible after that, so I switched back to the stock ROM available from the HTC website and all seemed well at first. Now its back to hit or miss.
I cant really rule out a hardware issue such as a broken sensor or something because I'm not sure how the mechanics of it work. When i push the power button on top the phone wakes but not the screen I know this because the 4 lights on the bottom light up and the keyboard as well. I can hit the button repeatedly but it doesnt help. At other times it works flawlessly, but usually does not.
Can anyone give me a suggestion as to what it could be, or a way to rule out a hardware issue?
Exactly my problem!
It was perfectly fine for the first day or so before it started crapping out again..
Can someone please help us with this problem?
It's mind consuming and it's making me worry.
Until TP3 is out, I won't get a new phone ):
Well, the problem is discussed in great detail on the internet, but no one can give a definitive answer. ..
I've been a touch pro 2 user for exactly 3 days... My new HD2 from T-Mobile is in the mail... This is a un acceptable flaw with no real solutiion... Good Luck TP2 users....
Good luck to you.
I've had mine for over two years and it was flawless
Just one recent drop determined everything
Although I Must say, it was one hell of a durable phone
Yea, dont get me wrong. I really like the phone. Thats why I'm getting the HD2. Great OS and big beautiful screen. I'm gonna miss the slide out keyboard but I think thats what breaks these phones.
I'm excited that there's the possibility of running Windows Mobile 7 on it.

I'd like to try to help. But you never answered my question of what ROM you are on (and which one you tried previously).
I've determined my problem is 100% hardware related. If I open my keyboard and then grab the screen and tweak it while pressing the power button it comes onn 100% of the time. Sux, but at least I know the cause now

Every once in a while my phone would turn on and I wouldn't know why
But yeah, I think it is hardware related.
I previously used Energy then went to Jacko's.
Both were perfectly fine, just the upsetting sleep function and light sensor would keep the phone off.
HELP: Same problem Phone not waking up
Hi saw this thread and was wondering if anyone can help me.
I have an HTC Touch Pro 2 for some month now...
Using the following details:
OS Version: 5.2.21887 (21887.5.0.86)
ROM Version: 2.07..401.1 (80303) WWE
ROM date: 02/04/10
Radio ver: 4.49.25.91
stock ROM basically...
THe issue is that the phone doesn't wake or when using it just freezes/hangs.
Not much software/apps installed... and memory is good as well.
I just don't know what's going on...
Help please.
Thanks

I'd agree with the notion that its likely hardware related. I've flashed maybe 10 different builds of Energy over the last 7 months or so, and never once had and issue with the SOD (sleep of death) that I can recall. A bad flash can sometimes happen. But since you flashed another reputable ROM (Jackos), that somewhat eliminates the possibility that a bad flash is the culprit.
You can start from scratch, by running Task29 to format the ROM area of the phone's memory, and reflash the ROM. But this would be just to eliminate the possibility of a bad ROM flash. My gut says that you won't see any different results.
Running the phone "clean" for a while (to see if you still have the SOD) without any software installed or any other modifications will eliminate the possibility that any software or mods are responsible for the issue.
are you sure its hardware related? because my phone started doing this yesterday too...I had an energy rom from october, and it was really buggy. I am only able to keep my phone from sleeping when it is plugged in to some power, so i flashed the newest energy rom and still having the same problem...wont wake up from sleep
EDIT:
I dont see how this can be hardware related because everytime i soft-reset, the screen works again. this problem only happens when the device goes to sleep...
Any overclocking?
As I already mentioned, I never had any SODs on Energy that I can recall, except when using OCT (OverClocking Tool).
I have done no overclocking...I just flashed the newest energy rom like 15min ago...is there anything else I can do or check? it looks like the phone works still, just no backlight...
After flashing the ROM, maybe try running it "clean" for a day or two, don't install any software or do any mods, reg edits, etc. If you still have problems with the phone waking up with a new ROM, and no other software or other mods, than it may indicate a hardware problem.
And be sure to run Task29 before you flash the new ROM, if you don't already do that.
You guys should read the following thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=648134
You're not the only ones (by any means) with the SOD issue. But it isn't at all clear what causes the issue. Lots of different theories in that thread about various software or ROMs, with no clear solution.
Lots of conflicting info, but some comments on the thread suggest (as I mentioned) that Task29 may help (certainly can't hurt).

Nope, definitely not sure, especially after reading the thread linked above. But as I suggested before, Task 29, try a different ROM, and run it clean with no software or mods, and start eliminating the variables.

[Q] Device becomes unresponsive after several minutes of use.

Hello,
I have an HTC Desire HD running Android 2.3.3. The device isn't rooted and I've never rooted it before.
I've checked on this site, and I've scoured Google all day but I haven't managed to find anything that matches my problem specifically, as explained below.
In the last couple of days I have been having a bizarre problem where after several minutes of normal use the phone becomes completely unresponsive or very laggy (to the point where it is unusable). This occurs whether I am using apps or simply looking at the home-screen.
The only thing that's responsive is the screen lock button, this works as normal. However when I then try to unlock the screen, the phone is still unresponsive and I'm unable to unlock it.
The only fix I've found (if you can call it a fix) is to leave the phone alone for a several minutes. If I do this I can once again unlock the screen as normal and continue using the phone, however after a few minutes of use it locks up again! This has been happening since last night now and I've found no way to break this cycle.
I did a hard reset to see if this solved the problem but it had no effect. The phone will boot as normal, and after a few minutes of normal use it will become unresponsive again.
I've also booted my phone without the SD card in just in case anything on this was causing the problem, still no improvement.
Has anyone else experienced a similar issue who could provide some insight as to what might be causing this issue? Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
At first I thought this might have been a software issue, but as it persisted after the reset I'm beginning to think this might not be the case.
Thanks,
KaRsKiN
The problem is coming from the magnetometer. I have the same issue, please check this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1394264
The only workaround I found is to disable screen rotation and do a couple of restarts (not switch off). Of course, no compass in the end, but at least I can use the phone.

It is possible that your battery could be failing. See if att has one they will let you exchange.
If its not the battery then it could be a hardware issue. Just send it in for warranty if that is the case. You should still be covered as the phone is not yet a year old.

How should this be connected to the battery...?
Anyway, I think that it is a software issue rather than a hardware one. Maybe something is running in the background, using 100% of the cpu. You could try CPUNotify for realtime cpu monitoring.
If that doesn't work, you should try the magnetometer way. Maybe it's a new issue. Never heard about it though
I do what i want, because I can.

I'm not going to explain in detail about the relationship of voltages and CPU usage. The battery being bad can and has caused these exact issues. Just like if a power supply is failing it can cause a blue screen in windows. In android the phone rebooting itself or freezing is the equivalent to a blue screen. Since they have never rooted and are on a stock rom there is nothing except a hardware problem that would cause this. If the battery is not the culprit then one of the many components in the phone can cause freezes and reboots if it is failing. Android os does not allow a single task to take over the CPU. This is not a windows os. So like I said, just use your warranty and get it fixed. Stock phones should not be presenting this behavior, you would have to root it to cause these kind of problems.

[SOLVED?] GSM freezing not recieving calls/sms / No radio wake / wrong clock

Well, for the moment ICS (any version) is making my phone unusable as a phone itself.
I saw some people complaining about the GSM hangups (including me), so if you let the phone sleep, you wont recieve any call. The caller will hear the same tones, as if you dont pick up the call. If you send an sms on a phone in such state, it will only appear after turning it on manually (often having duplicate SMS). When you turn the phone on - you wont even get a missed call, no signs of anything.
This problem is very hard to reproduce, it happens from time to time.
I've tried to flash any other ICS based rom on the phone - any has the same problem. The only rom i hadn't such issue is 2.3 stock/modified. But i want ICS!
Anyone have any thoughts, what can be causing this? I'm tired of this happening, people complain that the cant tell me something urgent, and i dont even know they wanted to.
UPD: There is a parial fix for this issue by Maruzko by installing an app that prevents deep sleep (but thats battery consuming offcourse).
I think that there should be some internal fix for this issue, only devs can help up with that.
UPD2: My opinion that problems that people have with clock not synced is somehow connected, coz when you turn on the phone in that state, you see the clock changing rapidly and stopping at wrong time, so changed title to include that also.
UPD3: There is an alternative way to fix the issue, but not much tested. Thanx to sideshow03.
Tests and reports are much appreciated.
Hey! I'm having the same issue as you. I'm surprised no one came up with a solution yet.

I have the same 'No response to a call' issue after flashing AT&T UCLJ3 rooted on a Rogers i927R Glide.
Essentially, after the Glide has been idle for a while, not sure how long, at least 30 mins I think,
there is no response from the Glide when calling it, and it goes to voice mail, but not straight away though.
I can hear a ringing tone from the phone I'm calling from, but the Glide just sits there in sleep mode.
Try several calls but the Glide does not wake up.
Haven't tried sending it an SMS when this has happens though.
If I then wake up the Glide manually, and then put it into standby again and call it, it responds as normal and starts ringing.
The thing is, it doesn't happen every time, sometimes the phone could be idle for 2 hours and still respond to a call, others times it doesn't after say 30mins on standby.
Hard to troubleshoot as its so intermittent.
This did not seem to happen on stock Rogers GB.

Currently have the 312 min value with interactive governor - this does not help, some deep sleep problem not frequency related

It doesnt appear to be just a Glide problem with ICS from internet searching but there doesnt appear to be a solution anywhere.
I found a reference to using an App called Wake Lock which some have found may fix it but at the cost of some battery life.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...t#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDMsImV1LnRoZWRhcmtlbi53bCJd
Choose PARTIAL_WAKE_LOCK in the config apparantly.
Ive installed it but not activated it yet.
Still testing with WiFi sleep policy set to "Only when plugged in", where as previously I had it set to "Always".
Anyways, there are devices on ICS that do not have such issue. May this be connected only with the tegra2 platform? Even have no idea how is this issue called to search.. sleep of death? As i know, its the state, when device does not wake at all, even after pressing power. Not our case.

Good point, maybe it is to do with the Tegra 2 platform or the sub revision of this ICS 4.0.4.
Yes, 'sleep of death' seems something different, when ieven the power button does not wake it.
I think our issue is referred to as not coming out of 'deep sleep' when a call/sms is supposed to wake it up.
Yesterday I had WiFi sleep policy set to be on only when on charge.
So all day I was on 3G data not WiFI. I called the Glide intermittently through out the day and it always woke up.
Today going back to normal setting of WiFi Always on to stay connected to an access point when in sleep mode. Will see how that goes.
Next I'll try:

Choose PARTIAL_WAKE_LOCK in the config apparently.
I don't have any issues with that.. sounds like a sysctl or build.prop mod though.. that's all I have changed myself without the community here.. everything works well in ICS and I do run litekernel 1.1.1 which may also be a + for the no hang issue

I'm running CM10.1 and not having this issue.
I did notice something though.
Hypothesis: Each ICS leak came with a different baseband. So there is an I927UCLG9 baseband, a I927UCLH2 baseband, and a I927UCLJ3 baseband. UCLJ3 introduced some ABI change that the libsec-ril we're using in AOSP ROMs doesn't know how to handle (or it straight up just has a bug).
I currently have the I927UCLH2 baseband as I never flashed UCLJ3.
Could someone more wizardlike than me whip up some baseband-only Odin images for testing?

Anyways, there are devices on ICS that do not have such issue. May this be connected only with the tegra2 platform? Even have no idea how is this issue called to search.. sleep of death? As i know, its the state, when device does not wake at all, even after pressing power. Not our case.

"Sleep of death" already has an established meaning. It means there's an intermittent whole-system freeze that only happens when the device is in standby, giving a "dead" appearance. It's been the bane of Kindle Fire developers for some time now.
I'd call this "no radio wake" personally.

Nice term, tottaly agree.
I just can say, that I have tested the lite rom, based on 4.0.4, that has a baseband chooser in aroma installer. I've tried running it with a baseband from 2.3.6 stock rom (that was my only hope), that did not give any difference, radio still did freeze Anyway, I cant be sure I did everything right that time, and your way of solving this must be tested.
Also, my thoughts are about some ATT frequency specific things, as I cant say everybody here is complaining (most are from North America, right?). May this be caused by using glide outside of US and Canada?

That's quite possible, as I'm on AT&T towers even though I don't have service through them (I'm with a prepaid MVNO) and I'm not having problems.

[Q] N7 shutting itself off at night

So my first N7 had dead pixels and when I returned it I had to open 3 others in store to find one that was perfect. Or seemingly perfect. Twice now I've woken up to find my N7 off. The first time it happened I thought maybe I turned it off but last night I know I left it on. I did some searching and found that I am not the only one with this issue, but I haven't found any recent threads about it or any known fixes. Now I'm still on 4.3 and really don't want to update to 4.4 but if this bug was addressed I'll update it. Anyone here have this issue, found a fix, or updated and had the issue disappear? I really don't want to exchange it yet again but I will if it's the only way to get one that doesn't do it. Any insight would be appreciated.

Why don't you want to update to 4.4.2? It might solve the problem.
Anyway, the only device I had that had random reboots was my Nokia Lumia 520 which I straight away replaced.
I would advise you to do it aswell incase 4.4.2 doesn't fixe it.

I don't like the way 4.4 looks. I am a big fan of the blue/holo theme of 4.3. I have 4.4 on my N5 and that's enough for me. 4.4 really doesn't bring much to the table (for me anyway) that would compel me to update.
My N7 isn't rebooting, it's turning off. Never had a device that did that before. I'll probably update just to see if it stops it, and plus I have some bad stuttering when watching embedded videos in chrome and from what I've read, 4.4 solves that too. I really don't want to have to exchange it again, and I'm sure the manager at Best Buy doesn't want me to either lol.

I'm going to tomorrow if it does it again tonight. But the tablet is only a few days old and I already did a factory reset before I set it up initially.
Ok it just did it again right in front of my face. It didn't just go black in the middle of use, I picked it up to use it and before I could do anything it powered down, but did so as if I had deliberately done it. Meaning, the Power Off pop up was on the screen and it said "shutting off" the same way it does when you turn it off manually. That would lead me to believe it would be a software bug as opposed to a hardware one... am I correct in that assumption? Or can some hardware defect actually trigger the normal power down sequence?

Display wakeup issues after screen replacement

Hey guys,
About 1 month ago the screen of my OP3 broke and I bought a replacement on eBay.
After the replacement I encountered problems, which only occured from time to time. Sometimes when waking up my device the screen stayed black.(Like on every 20th attempt it happened once). After pressing the power button some more times, the device finally unlocked. I am 100% sure that the device always unlocked on uneven attempts which means that the device at least woke up software-side.
I was totally sure that my replacement screen was kinda flawed and it is a not fixable hardware problem.
Then one week ago I switched from official LOS15.1 to the unofficial LOS16 rom and encountered big differences. The problem got noticebly worse. Waking up the device was a pain in the a**, it never worked on the first attempt on this rom. It's not unusual that it takes between 11 and up to 60 tries to wake up the device which makes it nearly impossible to use the phone. As before, the screen at least turns on software-side after every attempt. I can see this because the hardware buttons always light up.
Now after one week I switched back to official LOS15.1 and voilà, out of 20 attempts, the device instantly unlocked 19 times.
I know it is hard to understand and even to analyze such kind of problems, but there must be some solid solution for my problem.
Atm my clue is that original screens always offer more functions (e.g. gestures) than replacement lcd screens. Those functions are always connected to the software(rom). Is it possible that there is any other function (e.g. anything related to tap2wake or deepsleep) which is able to prevent my screen from turning on?
To deliver some more infos:
- I used standard system settings on both roms to test this out.
- "prevent" accitential wake up is turned off
- tried to disable gestures
- I tested my proximity sensor via an app, it seems to work flawless
- waking up screen in twrp is also very difficult and needs around 15-20 tries. Does anyone see any pattern?

You most likely got a bad part. OEM like One plus and xioami are known for using something called product binning. Which means their parts have a higher failure rate then other oems. They also dont make extra parts really so what you got was most likely just a generic screen like you can buy at any shop in China.
Nothing you can really do about it except try a different screen but to be honest I would get a different device and this time dont skip on the price. You get what you pay for and when a good device is cheap there is always a reason. (why do you think most of the owners and mods of XDA run Iphones as their daily drivers and leave android for a hobby)

Hey there again. I know my answer is kinda late but I wanted to share my experience. So I tried like 10 different custom ROMs with different Android version. The problem got even worse sometimes.
Anyway a few days ago I installed stock OOS and the problem is fixed now. I could not believe at first, but after excessive testing I am 100% sure now.
Anyone can tell why? Is the stock display driver proprietary?
TBH I always used to use custom ROMs (mostly CyanogenMod and now Lineage. Now on stock rom O feel like everything is better than ever before. Battery life, performance. Some features even offer more customization than custom ROMs.
I always thought the opposite is the case since custom roms advertise things like this. I will definitely stick with stock rom for now!

Thanks for the confirmation. The cheaper screens seem to have an issue which is not faced by the costlier ones. I have found while roaming the threads that sometimes flashing OOS helps. May be a driver issue.
My understanding from what I've read, third party displays needed kernel support.
I paid OP to replace mine - no problems.
Hi!
I'm having a similar issue with my Oneplus 5. Had my screen replaced (new one: OEM) and now it doesn't wake up most of the time either using power button or double tap or fingerprint scanner. I tried everything that I read on forums but nothing worked. Now I seem to have found a solution that I haven't read anywhere yet: I turned off night mode and now it's working as it should. Actually, whenever I want to use any screen adjustment feature like night mode, reading mode etc the screen doesn't wake up. But if I keep the default settings, there is no problem. The issue is definitely the new screen because before that I used night mode all the time (I mean after dark). Now I'm still thinking if I should return the phone to the repair shop and ask for another screen (they offer one year warranty after the repair) or just deal with it... I mean these OEM screen are cheap for a reason (as someone had written here before) and there is no guarantee that the next one will be good, and I don't feel like waiting weeks again for an uncertain outcome, also I can live without said features (gonna miss night mode tho'). Any suggestion? Should I give it a try? Maybe the repair shop made a mistake during assembly? Anyway, I hope this comment will be helpful for those lurking for a solution for a similar problem.

Thank you also for confirming that on OOS there is no issue. Looks like the cheaper of the online replacements have this issue while the costlier ones don't.
Funniest thing is I have a slim ROM backup on 7.1. and that works fine so like what the f--- any ideas people?

Yes, I have the same issue and I wanted to revert back to Stock OOS, but I just tried Caesium latest kernel, and the display wakeup issue seems to have gone. I'm using Havoc OS 2.3 based on Android Pie.
Guys the latest mad kernal reborn it wakes up all the time
At least for my screen
It used to be worse on all the other kernals
Finally found a solution
I had same problem on custom roms after replacement of display of my oneplus3...i was on oos 5.0.8 i had no issues in that but am a custom rom user and now the solution is flash any rom clean flash not dirty flash and flash gapps then flash any module if you want like magisk and then reboot setup the device and after first boot flash mcd custom kernel and yippeee enjoy...
