Smaller Galaxy Nexus - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I previously had a Nexus S but it can get a little laggy on ICS and so I upgraded to a Galaxy Nexus. First of all, I absolutely love it! Super quick and I can have nearly 30 apps open without the phone slowing down. The most useful feature I've found is the face unlock.
What I don't love is the size of the phone.
Is there a phone that is like the Galaxy Nexus but smaller like the Nexus S? And for GSM carriers like T-Mobile?

The Nexus S lol. Seriously it is just the smaller Galaxy Nexus. Your options get limited when you're on T-Mobile too (not many phones support AWS). Even if you were on AT&T there aren't any phones similar other than the SGSII, and that's about the same size.

I agree tbh, the GNex is pushing the upper limit of acceptable phone size and the Nexus S still has the best in-hand fit. Unfortunately the trend is for the phones with the best hardware to also have the biggest screens because it's a wow factor. You might want to look at the HTC One S though.

Factory unlocked used iPhone 4 (not 4s) run about the same price as a new non-contract phone.
Anyways if you have a friend on AT&T ask them to unlock an iPhone for you.
Starting tomorrow 4/8 AT&T said they will unlock iPhones if asked.

This is my main gripe when considering the iPhone! Just like how iPhone users are reluctant to switch because they are tied down to iTunes and Apple services, I'm reluctant to switch because I'm tied to a lot of Google's services like Google Voice and Gmail.
Honestly, as a user of Gmail, Gmail on Android has provided me with the best email experience I've ever had on a mobile device.
I'm going off topic but I just wish the Galaxy Nexus was a tad bit smaller! It would be a perfect phone.

Having just bought an iPad, I do miss all the Google services on Android.

About 3 days now. I know that, reading everywhere, the size will take some time getting used to but the size just doesn't seem practical to me. For example, wearing gym shorts without pockets forces you to carry the phone in your hand. Given the Galaxy Nexus's size, it almost looks as if I am carrying around a mini-tablet.
I wish there were variants of the same phone, like the Galaxy Tab with 10 and 7-inch options. Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy Nexus Mini -- now wouldn't that be great.

Shorts without pockets. Where would you keep a non galaxy nexus device??
In your sock?
I don't get what your trying to say.

Seems awkward to carry around a phone as big as the Galaxy Nexus in your hands, as opposed to an iPhone or Nexus S.

Well you know what they say about people with small hands...

... that they can't properly hold their Galaxy Nexus at all times.

Me in a nutshell.

I have average sized hands so this phone is great for me. Perfect size and it makes the ladies panties drop and iPhone users drop their phones.

Smaller!? Lol... Oh he'll no. I'd like it to be a tad heavier, maybe even a 4.8" screen. Well that's in my case. I'm gonna get a case to add a little weight to it. I have big hands and coming from a Galaxy Note doesn't help my case much haha. But after a few days the phone seems perfect size. Not too small like a S2 and not borderline big like a Note.
Having a Galaxy Note for a month messed me all up. The Galaxy Nexus felt small at first but am now adjusted to the size. I could one hand type on the Note and obviously easily can on the Nexus.

Related

Sold my AT&T Note & ordered a Unlocked Nexus!

What's up I've come to the dark side, well the other dark side. I've been on XDA for a while. I just ordered my unlocked Nexus from Amazon tonight for $502 with 1 day shipping!
My short story, I originally took the GF to AT&T to show her the Note as I though it was the perfect phone for her. She doesn't own a tablet like me and uses her iPhone to read her Hollywood gossip yada yada. I figured she would love the Note.
I also ended up loving the Note too "new toy syndrome" so I had to have one. Our upgrades weren't due until May. So I went ahead I threw down $650 for the AT&T Note.
Now don't get me wrong the Note is awesome! But the reasons it didn't work for me is.... Well first my area was "supposed" to get LTE in June but that failed and was pushed back till 2013. So what good is a LTE phone will no LTE! That's a big reason I didn't buy a international Note. Also I fell for the old "the note will get ICS in Q1" silly me I think I'm done believing or hoping for carrier updates anymore.
And honestly I've been in love with the Nexus since its unvailing. It's such a sleek pristine looking device. Not to mention pure ICS experience. I tried to set my Note up like a ICS overlay. But still had that god awful touch wiz lag.
I think I made the right choice, obviously. Nothing taken from the Note but me already using my Tablet daily it felt a tad redundant to have a 5.3" display and my tablet. I think the Nexus screen size is perfect. I have big hands and was able to one hand the note while typing but felt like it could possibly fall. I find the iPhone to small like I'll crush it, the Note a little on the iffy big side. But the nexus seems perfect size in today's mobile smartphone standards.
So just wanted to welcome myself and I have a lot of reading to catch up on!
Can't wait to get my Nexus with no AT&T branding and bloat less! I was gonna get the white model but it was $40 more and I thought the black looked more stealth and clean. I had a white note but I liked how the entire device even the dace was white.
I just did the same. I am not disappoint.

Haha, understandable. My GF will still have the note if I wanna mess with it. It's a great phone but usually when I'm home I always grab for my tablet. Yea the S-pen was nice but I didn't use it as much as I would have liked, but again only had the note for a few weeks.
Now the the thing I used the S-pen a lot was for Draw something with the GF, but I felt like it was cheating hahaha! And I was much better challenging the little one in fruit ninja. I found it a lot easier playing it with the S-pen, plus I hate that feeling when I swipe the screen fast with my finger tip. Odd lol.

There are many guides on the web and also tool kits. You can try and follow the instructions here
Most importantly you will need to set up Android SDK and drivers. Once this is done modding any Android device is a few short scripts away.

Waiting on the carriers is not fun. The carriers do not have the end users interest at heart. Although buying off contract carries many risks with GNex this is a good device.

[COMPARISON] Samsung Galaxy Nexus vs. Samsung Galaxy S III

We got the S III last week, and been wanting to put up some comparison shots between the Nexus and the S3.
disclaimers:
- I use the nexus on daily basis, and have been for the past few months, so my opinion might be biased.
- the nexus is modded. the S3 is stock.
Feel: both phones feel about the same weight, however, to me, the S3 feels bigger when holding it (probably because of the bigger screen size). The nexus' textured body gives a much better grip than the S3s smooth body.
Display: You probably can't tell from the pictures, but the nexus has a curved display and the S3 doesn't. both displays are great, and with the right ROM/Kernel, they'd both look beautiful.
Performance: S3 feels faster than the nexus.. even with the stock ROM. Their hardware specs aren't the same, so no surprise there.
I was really waiting for the S3 to come out, as some of you may have as well. Let me know if you have any questions, and I'll try to answer all that I can.

Is the Nexus running JB?
Probably not, a friend of mine also has a S3 and I own the Gnex of course. The Gnex is faster than the S3 with Jelly Bean on the homescreen and opening apps. The downside is of course the hardware and the S3 is way better in benchmarks, but anyway, jelly bean makes the Gnex really unique, at least until the S3 gets jelly bean.

Nuff said.
+15-20% performance for almost double the price.
S3 is a very nice phone that has very poor value.
You think the Gnex dislplay is beautiful? Pffft, that phone feels so ghetto after getting my One X.
i prefere the pure unlocked UI untouched google phone! and that is Gnexus 4ever!
Using a non Nexus phone makes me feel like a 2nd class citizen as far as software-side is concerned, and I concern about that. I went through 4 Android phones in the last year and the Nexus is where I'm gonna stay until there's another Nexus that's worth upgrade to, likely next year.
Q&A!
I have both s3 and nexus I think with jelly bean nexus is fast but all I
Over s3 is better.

I have a GNEX running JB with Franco Kernel and personally it is pretty much perfect for what I use it for. I gave up buying the latest must haves a few yewars ago as I found that I wasn`t really using them to anywhere near their true potential.
I can`t see me changing my current phone for sometime yet. Just does all I need.
Displays look nice but that hardware button on the s3 really throws off the looks for me...

Why I'm returning my Sprint Galaxy Nexus

Not to ***** but perhaps this will help someone considering a purchase.
I recently had the chance at a free upgrade from my Nexus S 4g (free as in two-year contract) so based on the fact that LTE is supposedly active in Baltimore and the Galaxy Nexus got insanely rave reviews from everyone, I decided to take the leap.
Here's what I found:
1.) LTE does not work in any of the locations I spend the most time in Baltimore. In fact I cant even say that it works at all as I've never seen an LTE connection anywhere in the city. According to the coverage map, my house and my kid's soccer field on the other side of town are both in LTE areas but I get no LTE signal at either location. Forcing LTE in either location results in no signal at all. I can only assume that Sprint LTE is not ready for prime time or I have a defective phone.
2.) MTP. One of those things that the reviewers never mention. I sort of expected that the phone would use MTP since the Nexus 7 does and was disappointed to find this to be the case. MTP has been unreliable when copying large numbers of files on every device I've ever encountered it on, not to mention the annoying Windows 7 warnings about how your media files may not work when you know they absolutely will work. Sure enough, the copy hung and the phone had to be unplugged and plugged back in the first time I tried to copy my old /sdcard contents to the phone. Took me about 3 tries to get everything copied. I much prefer regular old USB Mass Storage mode.
3.) WIFI signal strength. The WIFI signal strength is demonstrably worse than on my Nexus S4g (which also isn't great). It's just a little worse but bad enough that I can't reliably use WIFI on my porch or at my desk at work, both locations where I get a usable weak signal on the Nexus S.
4.) Size. This one is totally subjective but I find that it's more difficult to use the phone one handed, with my thumb as the pointer. This is how I use the phone 99% of the time. I suspect I could get used it but for now it's a minus.
5.) Speed. For daily use, mostly reading and checking email, the phone is not appreciably faster than my Nexus S 4G. Google Now is a bit snappier and you get the occasional lag when switching apps less often but that's about it.
So, that's that. Otherwise it's a very handsome phone. No LTE is the real killer. I don't see the point of locking myself into a two year contract when I can't even use LTE and I know the next Nexus will be out in the next 6 months or so. WiMax still works so I'll just stick with that until Sprint gets their **** together.
Cool story bro. But i haven't had any issues with mine and couldnt be happier.

I don't understand why people post these things in the gnex forums. We are here kuz we own them and like them. No disrespect but I don't care why you don't like it. I don't have the issues you speak of so hope you find a phone you like. There is an appropriate place to post your review. Its on the sprint sight. I just hate when people do this. Its telling us to our face that the phone we have sucks.

and we care because.....??
Your first mistake was expecting Sprint to have descent LTE. If you are interested in LTE you go VZW, otherwise just pass on it for a few years.
So your main issue is that Sprint has awful service? This isn't news. Grab a play store nexus and pick your flavor of prepaid SIM card!
Nexus FTW!!! We should totally create a rant and rave forum... That would just be like so much more fun to sit there and watch people bash phones that they don't even understand... Especially why a Nexus is a Nexus... The phone is awesome because it is a developers playground, if you want a phone that supposedly works the way everybody else wants then go buy an iPhone and believe like the rest the morons in this world that it is the most sophisticated smartphone...

[Q] What mobile phone comes close to the Nexus family

I have owned all of the Nexus phones. The Nexus One, the Nexus S and now the Galaxy Nexus. Google doesn't sell the Nexus 4 phone in the Netherlands but there is a webshop in the Netherlands that sells imports. They sell it for EUR 550. A bit much if you ask me. Because I'm buying it with a subscription I don't have to pay the whole EUR 550 but something like a 100 euros.
So my question is: What phone could I buy instead that comes close to the Nexus 4 in regard to these points:
Timely updates
"Vanilla" Android experience
Ability to unlock without too much hassle
Or should I just give up and just pay the high price anyway...
None. The Nexus 4 is in a class of its own.

Surprising that you ask this. Especially after using the whole line of Nexus devices.
None of the phones will come half as close to the Nexus in terms of the points mentioned by you.
However in terms of other specifications, I think the Galaxy S3 or HTC One X should be the closest.
And do you feel the Nexus 4 is really that big of an upgrade over the GNex? If you were getting it at the price offered on Play Store, then fine. But for an overpriced Nexus 4, I'd suggest stick with the GNex.
Just my 2cents to save a few of yours.

if you were "having" to stray away from the nexus line i'd just say go note2 and gs3(or hold out for gs4) i hear aosp is still a great resource.
I had a Samsung Galaxy i7500 and was very annoyed by the quality of the firmware. I had a girflriend with a Samsing Galaxy S with all kinds of annoying features. (I am talking about the phone here) She lost all her contacts. The default for that device was to NOT store the contacts in the cloud but backup with that POS software called Kies. Okay, you get the point, I don't like Samsung software...
The HTC One X sounds like a good deal. But it still costs me around EUR 50 and I would rather pay EUR 100 for a LG Nexus 4
After reading all your comments and thinking about it I think I should stick with a nexus device. I wouldn't mind staying on my GNex but In my case I'm getting a subscription with a phone so I think I'll make someone else happy with my GNex. I think the EUR 50 difference is worth spending it for the LG Nexus 4. And if I'm satisfied I could also sell my GNex to get my EUR 100 back.

Having owned several Asus Tablets, I KNOW that they are on top of their game with software updates. When I owned the first Transformer, we got MORE updates then the Xoom (Google Tablet) and were days behind the Xoom's Android software updates.
Basically saying that Asus is baller when it comes to techies since most of their whole company is based around guys like us who tinker and build. I never owned a PadPhone but heard it is really nice.

S4 is like an iPhone (size and usability wise), mixed with a note (bigger than iPhone).
Perfect phone. Never gonna buy another one.
Agree?

I will maybe upgrade to s5 but I do not like s6 having no way to change battery. I use a 7800mah anker and I can't give up 3 days without charging...

I agree, it is also the perfect phone for me. However, I will upgrade probably when the next flagship is announced from HTC or Samsung

HTC Hima (One M9?)
The portal has leaked images and specs. Apparently, it'll be running the Snapdragon 810 that Samsung just scrapped for the S6 in favor of it's Exynos chipset.
I've got my eye on it
Asus Zen2 looks mighty interesting.
I'm considering this for my next phone, hopefully some dev will take a shine to it and concoct something.

Agreed. Still my daily driver. Definitely love the screen size to phone size ratio..perfect! Developers are still active for this phone (Thanks!). Looking forward to the S6, but it's hard to let go of this phone!
It is the perfect phone
I completely agree. I bought the S4 in 2013 (M919) and lost it. I waited for the S5 and seeing it was crap, I bought the S4 again.
Recently I broke the screen and thought I'd check out other phones.
After filtering my constraints :
- 5 inch max cause I use the phone one handed
- Micro SD
- Physical buttons
- Removable battery
- Full HD display
GSM Arena phone finder returned just one result. The S4
Guess this phone is going to be with me for a long time.

This phone has everything you need, man. Every time I think about upgrading I find some downside that makes me remember why I shelled out so much for the S4 in the first place; this phone has top notch specs that'll last for YEARS as long as you take care of it. I still have the original battery and charger, and I've only had to change screen protectors twice in almost two years. If I were to take off the Otterbox and screen protector, you wouldn't be able to spot the difference between my used S4 and a new one right out of the box.
I'm in no rush to upgrade. I think the only reason that I have anyway is to change it up and try something new. Pound for pound the S4 still holds it's own against current flagships.
