Hi I have updated to the most recent firmware, 0.62a and the phone has not been rooted or modded in anyway before.
Is it still the case that I need to downgrade the firmware to root the phone?
Thanks for any help in advance
Try to flash this file (below) in CWM. it should work.
But remember about BACKUP!
I downloaded the file you attached thanks and downloaded ROM Manager on my phone but it says O clicked on CWM Recovery and it says I must install it manually to proceed.
Sorry im a noob to this, so just want to make sure I get it right
here i found easier method - without using reovery and .zip:

HOW TO ROOT
Start Flashtool
Connect the device to the computer and wait until it's recognized
Click the icon with the "Padlock [the second in a row]
FT will start pushing files, wait till it finishes. Meanwhile the phone will reboot once.

When it's over Flashtool will notify "Root Access Allowed"
Open the application list on the phone and look for the app "Superuser"
If "Superuser" is there you have Rooted your device successfully.
Congrats!

Are you SURE the bootloader is unlocked? I'd try flashtool it's so much simpler
Yes I agree, install flashtool.
Install flashtool from here: http://androxyde.github.com/Flashtool/
Once downloaded and installed head over to the directory of the programm and inside the folder "Drivers" install the driver located and chose appropriete options when the tick boxes come. Then you will figire out the rest. In flashmode you can flash kernals easily
it still don't work, any idea?

Your bootloader is probably not properly unlocked then. Try go over the procedure again to unlock the bootlaoder.
i try twice, but same result ...
Sent from my R800i using 4.0.4
Try download the kernel again. Maybe kernel file corrupted?

Thanks for the reply .... i have tried it with all recoveries... twrp gives error this package is for device : e975 , this device is geeb. Cwm and philz wont let me install it too... i wonder why twrp takes device as geeb.. fancy stuff eh.. and i installed recovery from twrp installer too just to make sure i have the correct recovery.. i tried editing the names in rom to geeb , passed through device mismatch error , but still it wont install..
I just upgraded my device to 5.0.2 after a lot of hassle. Flashed TWRP and I also flashed the supersu zip file through the recovery, the installation went well but after rebooting the device when I try to open the SuperSu app I get the following message. I don't know what I did wrong.

I found the work around almost immediately after posting this thread... It was the supersu zip file that was the problem... I didn't have the latest version of it... But after flashing the latest version, my device was successfully rooted... Anyways Thanks for the responce...
Hey,
I made root on my Shield TV 2017 16GB. All worked great.
I decided to edit the bulid.prop file to change the device name, but I don't think I did everything right.
I made a copy of this file on a PC before editing.
The trouble is that the device does not start. The Nvidia logo and the animation of the android logo are shown, which loads indefinitely.
I started the menu with A + B. I chose option 2 (Boot recoovery kaenel) and the second menu came up.
I chose (apply upade from ADB).
ADB detects the device in "sideload" mode.
Can I upload the file itself?
Do I need to restore the entire system?
Sorry for my bad English.
Best regards,

use twrp to push the build.prop to system..
if u cant figure it out then flash stock and start over
you can only flash official updates through stock recovery and adb sideload

Thank you. I was able to upload files using ADB Sideload.
The system started and works as it should.
