[RESOLVED] [Q] [REQ] Strikethrough? - About xda-developers.com

Resolved - Already implemented. Lock/ignore this thread
Any chance we could get a strikethrough feature in the forums here? The use is obvious but I will give an example anyway. I report a bug, that bug was added to a buglist in the original post but the software in regard is still pending a bugfix. Making this strikethrough makes it obvious for other users to ignore it, and editing the post by just deleting the text is a inconsistent in regards to completion and research. [EDIT] In other words, other readers will see that this matter has been reported and is being taken care of. Assuming the majority of our users are moderately intelligent, this could make the place a LOT cleaner. [/EDIT]
There's no need to add a button even, just for those "in the know" to use even with ... bbcode or add the <del>...</del> HTML tags to the forum software's allowed tags.
I understand that some forums do not like this feature but I can't remember why, I always found it very useful when editing my posts. It's a lot less annoying for other readers than to completely delete an entire paragraph of text. With that said, if there is a reason why this won't be implemented I will not press it any further.
Thanks!

Noobish double post

Are you talking about this?
Wrap with strike tags like this...

"Use the search" is NOT CONSTRUCTIVE!!!

You know, while I realize that it can be annoying as hell when someone asks about the Touch Plugin, SMS threader, insert your whatever here, especially when there's a thread on that very thing about three lines down from the top, responding to a thread by saying "Use the search function, noob," really doesn't help a whole lot. I just spent half an hour pouring over about 30 god-damned threads filled with irrelevant bullsh!t and flame wars about how the original poster should use the search function. Well you know what? I DID use the search function, and ended up getting post after post telling me to do so. Every time we respond to a post without answering it, it shows up later to screw someone over who's actually been doing what they should. So please, if you must tell some new-comer to search before posting, at least follow it up by telling him where to find his answer, so it doesn't affect the rest of us later.
Alternatively, perhaps the mods could delete these threads entirely. And while they're at it, if they could improve the search feature, that'd be great too, because it totally sucks right now. Can't search "SMS" or "3G" or anything else under three letters, which can be kind of a big deal around here. Doesn't have quotation function. Lots of room for improvement.
Wow. Looks like you got it all figured out now.
You're right, the integrated search kinda blows. Try this one
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=298893
2 letters, 3 letters, quotes, you name it. It's a sticky in the 'Hermes' forum. But should be in all of the forums IMHO.
BTW, make sure you include Hermes in the search term to get Hermes specific results.

Don't worry... It's 3am in my time, and US Public Schools isn't much better!
I have to say that its not just this forum that people insist on stating the obvious e.g. use the search.
I'm a firm believer in the philosophy of if you haven't got anything constructive or useful to say then don't say it.. e.g. don't be a smart @rse, don't post "use the Search" if it winds you up then ignore it and look away...

How to turn off button enlargement

Sorry don't know how to call it, but I have installed a newer schaps firmware and now I have the following tool I want to get rid of.
When I press on the right corner on the G(PRS), volume etc buttons, they are enlarged in a separate window (text balloon?). This means every time I want to access the volume or messages I have to go through 2 steps instead of 1, and I cannot change the volume of my phone just by scrolling the wheel, now the enlargement comes forward. (sorry for my bad english).
Is it possible to turn off this thing?
Thanks in advance!

Sure, you can turn it off. Just go around somewhere in Start/Setting then you will see the menu enlargement icon to turn it on or off.
Ignore the guy above - he's just a smart arsed f***wit who either doesn't know what he's talking about or just simply cannot be arsed to read your question properly.
Now, as you've no doubt already found out, his instruction was for a totally seperate thing (for his sake - YOURS CHANGES THE SIZE OF THE ICONS ON THE START MENU when what the post actually asked was how to get rid of the speech bubble that comes up when you click on an icon...idiot)
What you need to do is to fire up a registry editor (handily, there's one included) and go to HKLM\Services and find the LargeTitleBar key.
Delete it. Restart. Job done

Smiffy.
With all due respect to a senior member like you, i would like to tell you that whatever vichet007 has said is true and if you disable large start menu you can get rid of the bubble. So why unnecessary flame some guy who is trying to help.

Menu option
I'd like to know what setting lyhouth is talking about. I searched in settings and could only find large and small keys settings.
Quakie
Large Start Menu (and large Title Bar)
Having seen both functionalities (larger start menu as well as large Title bar bubble) as separate entities here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=344533
i have concluded, that Schap's must have skillfully crafted one switch to simultaneously change the state of both settings.
This "Toggle switch" is found in:
Start -> Settings -> et voila "Large Start Menu"
While the larger style sure comes in handy for thumb use, it is a drawback of the large setting, that one cannot simply in- or decrease in call volume by simply using the scroll wheel but one has to remove the phone from the ear and set it manually via said big bubble.
Using the siple routine indicated above, one can decide for onesself, whether this feature combination caters to ones personal needs and preferences or not.
Being given the choice, along with the Advanced config tool et al. is what makes Schap's Roms so useful and great in my personal view. I must say I love them.
Cheers, Chris

Sorry Mr Senior Lordsmiff for this inconvenience. I just do hope that my contribution/response can help because I used to do this when I have this issue (if I can understand this issue). Please just ignore my post if you think it's not helpful or it's wrong because I am not an expert like you, Mr Senior. I spent time responding to this (using my limited knowledge as what you mentioned) because I do believe that people in this forum are helping each other if they think they can help.
Sorry for my bad English as well.
Hey come on you guys - don't be all up tight about this. It was tongue in cheek - highlighted by my use of stars instead of actually swearing. Everyone gets flamed occasionally, including me.
Suck it up and don't be such a bunch of girls.
Oh, and xda2jojo - next time you PM me to tell me not to use an inappropriate word, make sure I've actually used an inappropriate word.
The number of times I've spoken to flar and others in an attempt to become a mod and stop the people that are actually using bad language on here to each other and i get a PM reprimanding me for using stars in a tongue-in-cheek post??? Was there not enough smiley faces for you?
I apologise to lyhuoth for my abrasive sense of humour but that's what it was.
xda2jojo can f*** off and give me a free holiday then.
Well...we are all from different location, different culture with different sense of humor.
My co-mod including flar knows everything before i sent a pm to remind others.
Try to use again inappropriate word even using star, i'm gonna give you a permanent holiday.
I *really* can't believe that you're having a go at me because I'm censoring myself and not actually swearing...unbelievable.
With the personal attacks that go on around here all the time, I'm being censured for personal restraint during a tongue in cheek post.
It's obvious to me that you don't do any modding on this forum because anyone who knows me and has seen my previous posts knows that I am sarcastic, abrasive and helpful in equal measure.
Since when did the mods around here:
A) do any actual modding
B) start wearing jack boots
Custel got a 24hour ban for far far worse and you're threatening me with a permanent ban for using stars????
Seriously, unbelievable.

It's not like we went OT or anything and started *****ing at each other about stars and swearing?
Can you not use a scroll wheel man??
Sheesh.
Damn I am all confused, did the problem actually got solved? I can smell is some stinky arse...LOL

Just a thought.

I have been trolling the forums for years and have spent 1000's of hours
reading and learning and searching...
mostly searching...
I was just wondering. How taxing would it be to have links
in the forums to entries in the wiki detailing what a given subject is all about?
similar to Tomboy notes in Linux.
where no special taging in the post needs to be made.
any word that has a wiki entry would automatically link to the article.
for instance:
while reading a forum entry about flashing a ROM, there is talk about
HARDSPLs, RADIOs, CID Unlockers, Nand, HaRET, Compcache, different
versions of android Donut Cupcake Eclair etc.... Tinboot, Flash,
CustomRUU.exe the list could go on forever.
Being able to click on the word that is of interest and lead them to a
stationary section for an answer(such as a wiki), may keep the "Stupid" or
repetitive questions to a minimum and help clear up the boards.
Instead of re-explaining how to do something every time a new visitor to the
site decides to ask noob questions, a noob would see something they don't
understand and then click on that word that links them to an article that
best describes it.
the problem is that stickies don't always stay up. good explanations don't
always have their own thread, and searching the forums usually just brings
up posts of people using those words in a sentence but not necessarily
explaining in detail what it is about or how to use it.
often there are very good posts that explain in detail certain subjects.
and if you search for them you will find them.
but you will never get rid of "Lazy" people that don't want to search for hours
reading countless numbers of non-helpful or incomprehensible jibberjabber.
and its not always a matter of being lazy. sometimes it is just damn near
impossible to find what you are looking for.but it is there....
it has just got to be.
Also, if this is possible to have setup,
when there is a subject matter that doesn't yet have an entry any
knowledgeable person that has permission to create an entry can do so.
(i am guessing thats already true for the wiki)
I am sure that may be more complicated than I am seeing it. But it sure would be nice.
I like this idea. At some point we are going to have to migrate to a new wiki (the one we have is no longer supported). When we do that, I will look into this as well. Thanks.
I think not... Cause i will always click the words by accident,
If i want to know something, i will look in the wiki myself
Maybe an option so you can choose
I don't like it either. That way it looks like some ad app has hijacked your browser and hyperlinks all relevant words for you. But, if you could choose wether to turn this option on or off, it might be an idea!

for sure this would be a better thing if it was "ON" by default for noobs

I consider a troll to be someone that joins a forum just to get access to a download or to frequently get info about something and never contribute back.
I don't really consider myself a troll... when I have something of value I will post. when I get really stuck with a problem I post. but I have no need to rant about BS or make comments on things that I am not really sure about.

SPOILER Show/Hide Tags

Is there any way to have show/hide tags such as
Spoiler
text
, to have a block of text hidden until you click on it?
Relevant links:
http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=110598
http://www.creationlab.info/2008/09/creating-vbulletin-bb-codes-from-html/
I'd like something like this for my guide so it doesn't show all sections at once. That way the person can choose to show only the section they're working on.
Does this exist on these forums?
If not, can the site admin consider adding it?
Also, is there a way to "hack" this in via the [ HTML ] tags?
Not at the moment. Something like this maybe in vB4 when we upgrade.
Spoiler tags seems a bit hacky, the admin's might consider if there is something a bit more user friendly or fit for purpose.
Collapsing information seems the wrong way to do it. I think a navigation (contents page) that allows quick thread navigation without opening in a new window / tab would be better.
Dave
Doh, that's too bad.
I'm not sure what you mean by a contents page? Splitting up one post into several, may make things a bit more hectic?

Like the contents page on Media Wiki pages : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agile_software_development
In my experience, so long as the posts are sequential and the OP has the ingenuity to disable their sig until the last post, it's not too bad.

Post less? (j/k)
I was thinking about linking inside a thread. HTML allows Anchor / Name tags to do this. A way of building a contents page could be handy.
So the contents could have:
Post 1
- Part 1
- Part 2
Post 2
-Part 3
etc. etc.
It might just be a dream though : http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?p=2031310
Dave
I also think that this would be a good idea. For example, a rom developer could hide the changelog, todo list, Q&A, etc leaving the first post much less cluttered and simpler to navigate, but still displaying the same ammount of information. I know how to use anchors and links with HTML, but I don't really know if most people know all the code, and it would be more complicated. For example, just a single link to an anchor named banana would be Link to banana. It would be much simpler to just use a

Yes, another excellent idea!
A collapsible tag could be useful in so many situations!
Here's another possible use: signatures. Almost everyone has a list of the phones they have, current rom, radio, spl, recovery, mods, themes, etc. We could literally change 5-10 lines of text to a single "show" button on every single post on every forum. I have no idea how much work it would take to implement this, but it would really be a kickass idea.
Hi everyone,
i know this is a pretty old topic, but i wanted to know if it is meanwhile possible to build a "spoiler"?
i wanted to post a logcat-log but its like 100+ strings long so it would be pretty nice to make this information collapsable to keep threads clear.
thanks in advance

You could use a
Code:
box.
Sorry for also resurrecting an old thread but I too would love a collapsible tag.
As with the OP, I think it would be a real boon to writing guides.
I have a multi-part guide I'm working on/maintaining for the Arc but for each part of it, I'd love to be able to have it split into independently-expandable sections, it would make it so much easier to divide it up clearly and to hide necessary but lesser-used information.

[Q] Why are my capitles converted to small letter?

Hi all!
I already posted this question, but it was in the wrong section of this forum. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=983647
The problem I got is that all my capitals are converted to small letters in a thread i started. The strangest things is that the capitals in the start post aren't converted to small letter, only in the post after. It isn't that i can't type Capitals (I can, see: ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ)
What I post: http://pastebin.com/5WZXKJWP

We have a "filter" that prevents all caps posting. It makes some posts easier to read, like ones going
"PLEASE HELP MEEEEEEEEEEEEE MY PHOOOOOOOOONE NEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEDS ROOTED NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW HLAP ME HLAP"
But it appears it is detecting the large number of capitals being used in a row, and is making them lowercase... I will have a play with your post and see if I can get it to override
Hope that explains it. It's an inconvenience in this case, but it is overall pretty handy in making posts readable from those who type using caps lock all the time

LOL, that explains a lot! Thanks for converting that post. But when I edit the post will I lose all my capitals again? If so, is there a possibility to uncheck this option for the first 6 posts on that thread? So I can edit those for in the future.

There's no way to override it manually, I'm afraid.
I think you can edit it fine though... It seems to count the number of caps, as if I added "NOTE" in caps, it would reduce it all to lowercase...
I would suggest using "Title Case" on the remaining ones, as that won't trip the "I CAN HASSSSSSSSSSSSS HALLLLP PLEEEEZ" detector
