Hi,
I noticed that the light sensor dont work and there isnt even a setting for this.
What i know:
in android version 2.3.5 the sensor works. there is a setting for automatic light intensity. but it doesnt works right -> the light sensor control just goes to lower light intensity, that means if you go for example in a dark room, the light goes down, but when you go then in a clear room the light intensity doesnt goes up.
since android version 2.3.6 there isnt even a setting for automatic intensity -> the light sensor is completly disabled.
What it means:
it should be just a software problem.
What i wanted to ask:
does the light sensor works in any custom roms? or does it works on cm9 (i cant ask in this thread, because i dont have the permissions, it would be fine if someone can ask arcor for that)? or is there some other solution?
bye, thanks and sorry for my english.

its in german. someone says there (rom2007) if he run with his fingers about the sensor the light goes down. also here http://www.android-hilfe.de/samsung...510-samsung-galaxy-w-kinderkrankheiten-3.html some other guys says the same (also in german).
that means the samsung galaxy w should have a light sensor. also some guys from the support approve this. i can be wrong but how do you explain this?
usermanual: i think the first usermanual in your thread is maybe the usermanual from android 2.3.5 and the other from 2.3.6?

That is proximity sensor instead of light sensor. It will only dim the display rather than adjust the brightness.
Don't worry dude there's nothing wrong with your phone. It doesn't work on my phone either. Well just one of those things I don't understand. How much does it cost to include this kind of thing? Why don't we have led light for notifications along with light sensor? Sometimes I just don't understand you Samsung :-D

Light sensor is not a crucial component in a hp device anyway. It is not there, we just learn to have a good habit of adjusting brightness.
The reasonable price of SGW is also an obvious reason saying why all those things are not included. It is certainly worth having good performance rather than more sensors.

I think with over $5 billion in profit,it becomes hard to care about customers and what they want. However,I'm pretty sure if they continue like this,Sammy will soon decline and learn the value of good customer care.

Yes that should be right. I thought we could have a special gp2a sensor where is a light and a proximity sensor in one lol...
But in my opinion its really ***** that in a lot of online shops they say that there is a light sensor and even samsung says that there is a light sensor.

in spec sheets the htx one x has a light sensor.
but however, I sent a e-mail to samsung and I expect the same wrong answers, but maybe I get a surprising one.
Business rulezzzz
Who will buy s2 if W will have 1G ram and light sensor and amoled?
In price light sensor and more RAM is a few dollars in price of the device but that businness rulezzz... Would not be suprised that light is off only by software and detuned too.

i can understand less RAM slower CPU and worse built quality...after all this is a mid range phone with quite reasonable asking price. Heck, I can even live without LED notification...however absent light sensor is beyond my understanding...this cheap piece of hardware is even on much cheaper phones (for example my girlfriend's wildfire s). This has nothing to do with Samsung trying to lower the price...it's just stupidity. Don't get me wrong, I love my Wonder! I just can't understand why a mid range phone doesn't have this completely basic feature.

thats not that what makes me pissed. its the fact that in every data sheet there is for the galaxy w a light sensor, and on the website from samsung there isnt a information from any sensors, dont even from a proximity or a acceleration sensor.
it seems, that even samsung dont know what they obstruct in their devices. (look for example the answers from the support relating to the sensor, or the false data manuals from samsung)
It can be too focused on market.
For west europe will release other fw with more features and for east other with less features.
That is why they not say all in spec.
Remember galaxy s came with amoled and tft display for other countries hope remember it well. S2 had some diferents too.

Yes, it does have a Notification light. Its where, normally, you would have hardware buttons (The bottom, instead of the top). Its hidden underneath the glass of the phone.

Well, so far we've seen it in solid green, pink (red+blue) and light blue (green+blue) so the common interpretation is it's multi-color, RGB, what have you.
It also fades in/out for added coolness.

Here's another movie that'll show how the LED is working... now with more than one color
http://thedumi.wordpress.com/2011/11/11/samsung-galaxy-nexus-led-video/
Thanks, that video is new to me too.
I am feeling more and more ridiculous each day as such a seemingly minor hardware feature starts to completely overshadow my disappointment that there's no SD card slot.
This handset needs to arrive already so I can check one out in person :\
The LED indicator is truly powerful enough to sway me toward a purchase. I sorely miss it from Blackberry days.
Yeah, it's one of the biggest things that still makes me put my retired Nexus One next to my Sensation, then sigh sadly
Oh yes! Thanks for the video. I love the nexus one's light, I can't believe more phones don't have this. I know some have tiny lights but they are... well... tiny!

If you need a flashlight that bad, you should probably just buy one of those cheap LED flashlights for $15.00 rather than risk damaging the LED on your phone. I thought that using your flash as a flash light for a long period of time regularly could actually burn out the LED because it was not made for that.

The Internet seems to be split on the opinion of whether keeping the LED lights turned on for more than a few seconds can severely damage them or not but some people advise against using any flashlight apps that keep the light on permanently.

Exactly what i was about to say,
If the duration of damage is less than a minute, why are we able to record videos with the LED on?
i use Tesla led as well, works well with widget locker, can turn the led on from lock-screen with a nice slider, pretty sure it'll stay on as long as it needs to, also also has strobe and Morse code functions which are pretty cool.

I've always just used the one that forces your screen to full white. I never wanted to risk burning out the led, either. I've found that the full bright white of the screen has always been sufficient for me.. even with my old HTC Hero.

To my knowledge there is no l.e.d in that location. To the left of the "S" is the proximity light sensor. Could it be that light is reflecting off the screen and emitting itself in a way that seems like a light source?

Weird how it was on without me being on a call but I found out the light is normal.

I honestly wouldn't worry about it. You might even not notice it if you switched to a dif rom with dif proximity sensor settings. I dont think its unheard of for an IR device to slightly glow red, prob just slightly more sensitive than another model. If you search for glowing proximity sensor you will see many devices that have it sometimes, and is even dependant upon updates/rom changes.
The only thing I would keep an eye on is, if you really think your phone is getting hotter than usual alot. It may be that the IR is receiving too much power, in which case it also may glow red, or the IR led may be dying and putting off visible light instead of IR

I was the one who posted about this a while back. It's the proximity sensor.
This guy has some application installed that keeps the proximity sensor on. It does pit out some light that you can see in a dark room.
For me I believe it was a notification application that I had set up to not go off if the phone was in my pocket hence the need to use that sensor.
If you make a call in the dark take a look, you will see that it may light up.

proximity sensor or the light sensor, gotta be infared, normal tho, cause i can see mine sometimes at night too.
Yep it is the proximity sensor. You can actually go into tasker and tell it to turn the proximity sensor on or off and the red light will show up and go away. It has to be pretty dark to see it though.

Hey Guys,
got my new Note II yesterday, but already having 2 problems.
The biggest is the light sensor; the Screen keeps adjusting it's Brightness like hell.
Read out the Sensor data, which is going from 0 to 13 lux when I cover the Sensor with my hand.
Do you experience the same?
Also my USB wire plug is very loose. Also normal?

Well, just bought it brand new, I think this shouldn't be on a 600€ device
Does your Light Sensor Value also jump around in same light conditions?
Low-Light mine goes from 0-28, normal it goes from 400~ to 80.000 sometimes, which results in frequent readjustment in brightness.
Thats very irritating for me, cause I use it everytime
Would be nice if someone could give me his values/behavior of the sensor with AndroSensor or so.
Will return this device then

I just got my GT-N7100 and am having the same problems. Very irritating. Need this to work for better battery life. Tried a program from Play Store called Lux, but it works the same, maybe a little better. But Lux is showing the sensor readings varying all the time even when the ambient light hasn't changed at all, thus the brightness fluctuations. I am rooted, but on Stock ROM. Wonder if a custom ROM would fix it, or if it's a defective sensor.
Anyone else experiencing this?

The default auto-brightness should not be updating so fast that it flickers You might want to get it checked out. Or if you use a 3rd party app, reduce the time interval of the update.
And do note, there is a difference say, with your back towards the sun, you face the phone towards you, or towards the floor. So when you are on the move, expect values to change.
Stock auto brightness is woeful in my opinion. It was the same one my Gnex so I have used Luxbon both with good results. Takes a bit of tweaking but brilliant when set up.

Hi everybody... .Today while I was changing my note 2 suddenly I saw that red charging indicator light was brighter then before... after few seconds it returned tu normal brightness level. .. I Checked charging plug but it was ok. Is it normal or something wrong with my phone ?

This is perfectly normal.
Try doing this, place ur finger on the sensors beside ur earpiece and after a while you'll see it go dim and vice versa.
This is similar how your phone screen brightness works when it is in "auto brightness"
So when you place ur finger on the sensor ur phone assumes ur in a dark room and so dims the light (so that the light isn't too bright) and when u take out ur finger ur phone assume the room is bright and the light becomes brighter so it is possible for you to see the light in bright conditions
