I've been trying to install apps from CM7 in within Juggs touchwiz rom. MMS/SMS works fine, but I can't seem to get the browser, calendar, contacts, etc... to work.
Am I missing something? or do these need to be properly ported?
I pretty much just yanked files out of Eugenes CM7 alpha kang and pushed them into my /system/app folder. MMS works... but nothing else shows up in my app drawer. I'm interested in:
AOSP Camera
Browser
SMS/MMS
Music
Contacts
Calendar
Phone Dialer
Do these need lib files to function?

Is it possible to replace the HTC dialer and the contacts app with the stock android one?
I like everything about the Sense based roms except the dialer and contacts app. My biggest problem is the lack of "favorites" section. I also find it takes fewer presses to call someone on the stock dialer.
I tried removing HTC dialer and contacts and pushing wysie's contacts by adb, with no success on VillainRom 3.3. It removed the HTC ones but Eris dump does not accept stock contacts.apk. I downloaded Dialer One from market, which is somewhat closer to stock app.
Is there a way to install only Sense Messaging in a No-Sense Rom?
I would love to install CM's RC2 but I really enjoy the Sense Messaging app (particularly it's ability to rename MMS on the fly if a file by the same name exists).
stock msg app is practically the same thing. also there are numerous other messaging apps such as handcent and chompsms you can try.
if all you're worried about is the app overwrite a previous picture, stop. you know all your incoming mms are saved to your picturemail website = http://pictures.sprintpcs.com - right?
I'm not worried about it overwriting, I want it to rename the second pic a different name on it's own. With the stock app, whenever i saved an MMS, if I already had a pic by the same name, I would have to go into a file explorer and rename it before the stock app would save it.
The sense messaging renames it on its own.
then try handcent or chompsms. most everyone uses handcent.
I've successfully changed my framework-res icons/notification bar.
I've successfully changed my SMS/MMS / notification bar icons.
Now, for the past few weeks I've been trying to change the notification bar icons for Gmail and Google Voice.
The icons seem to be located in their respective .apk's under these .png's:
Gmail: stat_notify_email.png
Google Voice: stat_sys_gvoice.png
So I changed both of them, adb pushed them back, yet every time I get an email or a Google Voice message, the STOCK ICONS keep showing in the notification bar!
WHY?!?!
And I check the .apk's and MY custom ones are there!!
It worked for the text messaging app (Mms.apk) but not for email of vmail.
I'm running CM6, nightly-134, but it's been like this for many, many nightlies.
Are these 2 icons cooked into the ROM elsewhere?
I've also tried w/ various versions of Gmail.apk - same thing..
Any suggestions?
Your apps have probably between updated from the market. Check the /data/app folder for the apk's and skin those files instead.

Do you have Gmail and GVoice installed from the Market? Cause if so, then you have copies of each in your system and data folders. If you do, then that would be your problem.
EDIT- I can't type fast. Already answered. lol.
I just went through all my directories - on the phone and on the SD. The ONLY Gmail.apk is in /system/app. Same w/ googlevoice.apk
The /data/ dir is empty - no /app/ folder...

That can't be right unless you have 0 apps on your phone. What did you use to browse the directories?
Snap. Or do you have everything moved to SD?

Just found 'em using Root Explorer. I used like 3 other apps that saw the /data/app folder as empty but Root Explorer sees the files.
Now I just have to make sure I can update the .apk's without any problems.
Thanks!
w00t!! It worked! I'm at work so I had to do it w/ Ninja Morph but it worked nontheless! I replaced the .apk's using Root Explorer, fixed the 'permissions' and all is good in EVO land now...
I'm having the same problem with Google Voice. There is one apk in data/app and another in system/app. The one in system/app shows my icon, but doesn't use it. Whenever I try to change the one in data/app with Ninja Morph it gives me FC on GV. Randomly it worked twice, but then when I went to edit the image again it didn't work. I can't seem to find a pattern to the madness. What am I doing wrong?

The one in /data/ is the most current app being used. If it's an app installed from the market, you have to uninstall it first before you push your updated apk. Look on xda for APK MANAGER, that'll give you the best ways of making it work.

So I think my biggest complaint on this phone, in my opinion, is touchwiz. I think its plain ugly and makes my phone look like a cartoon. And the apps like the calculator dialer clock calendar etc. all try desperately in subtle and blatant ways to copy apple, which really irritates me because the stock GB apps worked just fine, and in some ways I think better.
Touchwiz goes far beyond the launcher, and I've done everything I know how to do that I've searched to replace my launcher and excessively theme to make my phone look like ICS and keep touchwiz out of my face...but its still irritating to me to open up my contacts and be greeted with this silly interface that makes dialing and finding contacts a swiping-frenzy joke while the stock GB dialer was perfectly fine, and better IMO.
Coming from the Nexus phones with ICS...Gingerbread is no prize either but I think is much better as far as all those apps go. So my question is if its possible to replace the built in dialer, clock, calendar, calculator with .apks or other files? and If so how I would go about doing it? Thanks everyone.
Here's what I do.
Freeze all the touchwiz apps I dont like (i.e. dialer, contacts, launcher, etc.) and I use Apex Launcher and Go Contacts/Go Dialer EX. Works fine, and you can theme that easily.
If you are sporty, you can download a Nexus ICS rom and pull the phone/dialer, contacts, calc, etc. that you like, and try to put it in your system/app folder or data/app folder. havent tried this so it may not work.

Thats what I think I may do...but I'm probably going to take the stock GB stuff since I'm thinking ICS stuff wouldn't work right on juggs. I'll try to pull the apk's from eugene's CM7 and see what happens.
Oh sorry, I have ICS on the brain. Forgot to check your sig and see you were on Gingerbread
alot of times, you may be able to find the AOSP version of the apps in the market too.
The default Android Contacts, Dialer and Calculator apps are missing from the LG4. Can I just take them from somewhere else and install them? If not, why?
There are AOSP Contacts and Calculator apps in the Play Store, but both of them are not the same really and have bugs/missing features.
edit: Sorry, I meant the Contacts app not Calendar in title.
