I don't get it, the notification LED works for everything EXCEPT the native SMS app! WTF is that about? Are they really that lazy to no include any LED notification options in ICS for this phone?
It works perfectly for FB, Whatsapp, Gmail, etc... but nothing for SMS/MMS?
Or am I missing something here?
Download light flow in the market. The lite version works perfectly, and you can set up different coloured led notifications for different apps

Nope, you're not missing anything. Noticed it myself. I assume (or hope..) that Google will implement it anytime soon with an update.

Getting led notifications for native SMS normally
I think OP meant there are no -options- for LED notification for SMS messages. At least, that's how I interpreted it.

OP said LED notification doesn't work for SMS. It works for me, but I'm using GO Sms pro and not stock.
Works for me to on stock
make sure pulse LED is selected in the settings, otherwise it wont but still works under 3rd party apps
It also works for me, that's not how I understood OP's problem. My point is that there are no settings for the notification LED in the SMS app. You cannot enable/disable it there, or choose a color.
sms native led works.gtalk led works.gmail led doesnt work (why?). twitter and facebook didnt test it and dont want it.missed calls led doesnt work (bad bad bad) most probably because of the screen on?
works here nativ too.
maybe faulty handset?

Yep.read few posts with problems came from light flow
You're right it does work I thought it wasn't working at all... but my other point where you cannot customize it for the SMS app is strange for having a brand new OS designed for a phone that has this feature.
I definitely don't want to install a 3rd party app for this.
thanks to all.
I am quite sure Cyanogen 9 will have that... CM7 does...

Just some additional info on this, based on my experience:
I had the same happening to me, but only after I went to "General Settings->Additional LEDs found" and checked the box (I did that because I thought something isn't working right, but turned out I was just too stupid ;-).
My guess is that what's listed there as an LED is actually the main display, and checking the box messes things up.
Since rebooting (by pulling the battery) and unchecking that box again, everything works perfectly.
Also, if your GN is rooted, Light Flow will ask for superuser rights. Decline that, it's not needed on the device (everything runs well without su rights, as far as I can tell)
Even the Nexus One didn't have built in options for the notification light. In fact, it wasn't until much LATER that someone realized that it can do different colors.
I think CM7 is the only rom that had the notification LED settings built in at a kernel level. Other roms required the use of 3rd party apps (which killed the battery).
Coming from the original Galaxy S which did not have any notification lights, I still prefer the NoLed application instead of the led light. NoLed allows you to see the contact photo as the indicator that you have an sms message.
I use SMS Popup. It is a great utility and it supports LED Notifications

I haven't seen any LED notifications. Gmail, sms, or with go sms pro. I tried testing notifications and nothing happened. LED tester verified that the LED is in fact working though. So odd.
I did a search and didn't find anything(although I used the mobile app to search, read:aggravating)on this subject. I want to know if there is a mod to change the led flash to blue for messages and missed calls instead of red. Just a personal aggravation, really. Not something I absolutely can't live without, clearly.

The only thing I know of is to use GO SMS. You can change the LED to blue for SMS messages through GO SMS but I don't think it will change the color for missed calls.
LightFlow has been working very well for me on default mode on EL29 and FC22. Only blue and red work, but they work reliably. You can get purple to work if you use "direct mode", but I find that the LED turns off when the phone goes to sleep mode, so it's not very useful as a notification light.
re
I as well have been looking for a WAY or MOD or APP that will successfully allow me to change the LED notification accordingly but yet have been able to find anything that FULLY works. Liteflow doesnt FULLY work as the adjustments are off and when screen times out its pointless pretty much.
The ONLY thing Iv been able to find for another "notification method" is having the LED Flash from the Camera flash for an alert. Pretty cool thought if you have your phone faced down and dont here it.... Send me a message as for request if anyone wants the know how to set that up and I'll give you step by step..
try blink from the marketplace. its like lightflow, but its much lighter and more efficient and works great.
keep in mind the led will only display blue red or purple tho.
blink is one of my must have apps

I am wanting an app, that can customise teh colour of the LED for different notifications as well as turn them off when im asleep. I have seen an app called lightflow, is this the best app for the job?
I use lightflow and for me its perfect!
Nice

LightFlow is the best app ever!
You can set led color, frequency, speed, vibration and many more for every apps, for all notifications you need.
Buy PRO version because FREE version don't allow you to use LightFlow for every app, but it works only with a little number of apps...
Does anyone get the issue when using lightflow where the phone speaks to you??. Even if you disable all notifications on the accessibility screen, you still get the voice speaking.
Theres a big thread over on the lightflow devs website...seems like its a bug with ICS.
SAdly i bought it but have uninstalled it as it wont work unless you turn your sound off and personally i dont like my phone talking to me lol.

Unfortunately I was having problems with lightflow; sometimes the LED notification was not stopping regardless of what I did, until a reboot. The talk back thing I got rid of by not having accessibility checked within the phone settings. Sometimes the LED want activating either.
Most promising looking app though.

I also bought the pro. But I get the same issues with the led not stopping blinking. If I swipe a notification to get rid of it and don't actually view it the led just keeps on flashing. I think you press the clear button it works, but as a whole there needs to be some improvements in this app before I use it, all I really wanted was to turn off the led at night! It wakes me up. Too bright ha

Yeah, pressing clear, or entering the app and viewing the message doesn't clear the led for me. The only thing that works is rebooting. But I'm going back to handcent for my messaging and since the pro version supports it I've purchased it too. I just love having the led's for at work, where I sometimes can't hear my phone, but they have to be off at night. I can't believe that a little flashing light can be so annoying at night!

At night you can enable the "sleep setting" under settings, than it wont blink.
Go to Notifications/*AppName*/Clear notification style and select "Screen on", than it will stop blinking after you turned on the screen.

Sigh, for some reason this app doesn't work on my SGH-I747. I mean it does work but it doesn't show up the right colors that I've set up. For example: I choose the missed calls' color as red, but it shows up as blue and the rest are messed up too. Does anyone have the same problem?
The talking phone is very annoying, and i also experience the big orange square when you click on browser that mess my surfing xperience. I hope im not the only one

Hi,
Using GNex with stock JB 4.11.
With my former dumb phone, when I missed a call or a msg, the phone made a brief sound notification periodically as a reminder. With the GNex, there is no reminder. I must wake up the phone and notice a tiny icon in the notification area. Is it possible to configure the GNex to remind by vibration & sound missed events (calls, message, and possibly calendar)?
Thanks.
Although people mostly recommend Light Flow (Light Flow Lite) for controlling the LED, it also controls notification sounds/vibration if you want. It can do repeating notification sounds on whatever interval you'd like.
Its a bit of a hassle to set up though because you need to turn off all notifications in the app natively, then use Light Flow as your only way of controlling them, iirc.
Hi,
Cool thanks. I will check that out. BTW, I find the periodic notification of missed events a useful feature. How come such an advanced device cannot do such a simple thing? I assume "simple" because that is what a dumb phone can do. Or is there any technical / logical reason for not doing this kind of notification in the world of smartphone?

I would assume that the repeat notification option isn't really as necessary when you have a really good notification system that keeps everything together in one place. Not to mention that people kinda live on their phones nowadays, so I guess they assume people won't be missing notifications that often.
GoSMS has the ability to have "reminders"
So I was annoyed not having an LED notification light on oneplus 6t so I tried to make one of my own.
As OP6T has amoled display whenever a desired notification comes the app brings in a black screen with notification LED looking animation.
Though this is tested on OP6T, it should be working for most Android Oreo and later phones.
If not working for your phone, I'll suggest you to send me logs at [email protected]
To use it:
Install App.
Disable any battery optimisation for the app.
Give notification access permission.
Give full screen permission(if any required for your phone)
Select apps you want notifications for, by choosing a color (Only apps you set a color to enables LEDs).
Note: On successfully selecting a color for an app the text in which the App name is written should change to that color
Thats it.
For MIUI 11 devices make sure that AutoStart is enabled in App Info. Also check "Show on lock screen" permission in other settings.
Settings image: https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=1yxrLd5u7kLSGBwviKhXYqM21YLC8Dhiv
Note: To turn off the LED and to unlock phone double tap anywhere on the screen or use power button.
App now available on Play Store, please rate and share if you liked the app.

Same here. Also, an off switch for each app would be more convenient instead of picking white colour.
This is just what I needed, works great on my phone. Thank you!
I would consider using this if and when you include system apps. They are the only ones I'm interested in getting notifications from. Thanks for your efforts

@HarshBoy99 Hello! Thank you for the job you''re doing, but if you don't mind, i would like to point some important things.
You'r app uses a black overlay with a colorized dot in the corner, it's cool but there is a but. If The device is in a pocket, and you're using a pocket detection, the screen will turn on and show the pocket detection screen - what kinda annoying issue.
Another moment, again - becauses there is a use of black overlay, when there is already a notification panding and you recieve anothere on, there is a head-up notification with the all status bar info that shows up, again - kinda annoying.
As a recommandation - trigger the built-in AOD app instead of using a black overlay, that will fix the issues i've mentioned above + there will be an option to use fingerprint scanner on notifications.
Wish you the best!

Well I have included pocket detection in app, i.e if the LED is on and the sensor is covered the activity will be stopped. But if you have pocket mode on, it will show you the pocket mode screen for a brief moment and then switch off the display. This will help save battery if phone is in your pocket.
Yeah on that heads-up notification, I haven't found a way to get rid of this but it is only an issue of few seconds.
There are already many apps that bring on the default AOD display but it doesn't feel like an actual LED and moreover we can't change the appearance of AOD as it is a system app.
Thank You!
I wish there is an more option for WhatsApp. I do not want to receive LED from the Watsp group
Thanks

I have been using the app for some days now. I have also locked the app in recents to avoid it being killed or stop functioning. But when I get a notification, double tapping doesn't work instantly. Have to tap 4 times at least. Also, on unlocking the phone, I am in the Notify Buddy app instead.
App is great if you don't mind me offering suggestions I have a couple.
The light to move around in intervals across the top of the screen or even the two corners just to prevent possible burn in, say if you get a notification in the middle of the night or something and it blinks for hours on end (I know the chances are slim, but better to be safe than sorry)
Possibly an option to cycle the notification light if you have multiple notifications, so if I have a sms text and a messenger text it would blink once for the sms and once for messenger and cycle between them so I know I have 2 notifications.
An interval setting maybe how fast or slow for it to pulse or to keep it static. (If you choose to make it static warn it could possibly cause burn in)
If it's possible a way to keep the overlay active unless the notification is gone, I tested the app sending myself an sms text just to make sure everything was working I left the notification and the overlay didn't go back to the LED the screen just stayed black. If I'm not mistaken an actual notification light would stay active until the notification for said app was cleared.
That's all I really have for suggestions, I appreciate what you're doing with this app it's honestly the best alternative to any of the apps attempting to replicate a notification LED. I don't want you to think I don't like the app I'm just thinking of how my old phones with notification LED's behaved with notifications. Again thank you for your work and I hope my suggestions were something that could be of use.
Other then waking the phone this app is bloody great ?

Well this was exactly how I wanted for my app to function, but while testing it myself I observed that I had pending notification almost always and it would drain the battery exponentially. Therefore I went with notifying the user only while he is away from phone.
