Downgrading ROM - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

It flashed the latest HD Revolution ROM, and did the firmware upgrade it suggests with the wipe. I'm not very impressed by it so I would like to go back to my previous ROM. What I am on more is not very smooth, and benchmarking suggests that the phone was running much faster. I was also getting better battery life..
So can I just do a normal wipe and reinstall the old ROM, even though the old one is based on 4.0.3?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk

Addit - I don't usually do a backup before flashing but I did this time using ROM Manager because I really was very impressed with how the phone was running.
Can I just restore it?

wipe and restore your nandroid backup with CWM.

you need to do a factory wipe, clear cache and dalvik when you switch between roms but like martonikaj said if you have a cwm backup of the other rom you can just do a restore without wiping anything.

Thanks for everyones help.
Does it matter about the firmware upgrade that i did?

Doesn't matter if you're just gonna completely wipe it and restore or reinstall a different ROM.

Cool thanks!
It really great that people like me can come to a place like here and ask questions and people will help you out without them talking down to you.
I used to work with a lot of programming when I was in school 20 years ago but haven't done anything like it since then. But I like that I can play around with my phone to seek out its full potential and know that there are great people out there that are more than happy to share what they know. Thanks heaps!

Flashing Rom

Flashed my kernel last night. Tried several but adama I like the best so far. Now I'm considering flashing my Rom. Bricked my phone on Sunday...don't want that again. Leaning towards AOPK or FreeGS3. Looking for stability with some extra control...which was why I am leaning towards AOPK. Lots of feedback on FreeGS3 though. Figuring I probably can't go wrong with either one. If I do this do I do a nandroid backup? Wipe entire system, cache, & delvik cache? Thanks in advance.

Nandroid if you want to return to your previous state. A wipe is always good when you are ROM jumping. If you are flashing an update of the same rom that you have... A wipe is not needed unless it says so.

Freegs3 is an awesome ROM but I'm using the cm10 and I love it.
If you want to flash a ROM I would factory wipe the phone and then flash unless your coming from an earlier version of that same ROM then just wipe cache/delvik. Usually the instructions are listed in the thread of the ROM your flashing.

Nevermind, just realized someone answered my question in another thread...well here it goes, going to flash.

If you don't want errors after errors, you'll have to do a full wipe everything. Just how it is.

You still have to wipe going to those ROMs regardless....
Op:
Any ROM you go to will need a full wipe.
Unless the dev states that you dont and releases an update for a specific ROM, you'll have to wipe everytime.

What everyone else has been saying.. If you switch from one ROM to another you HAVE to full wipe the first time. After that, just wiping cache/dalvik is standard procedure upon an update to your current ROM.

Yes have too, and please read exactly what I wrote and what others wrote.
If you're coming from ANOTHER rom (example: Jedi rom to Jellybam)
You HAVE to wipe.
If you're running the same rom
(example: Jedi [beta 1] )
And you wanna change it to the same or upgrade the rom
(example: Jedi [beta 2] )
You DONT have to wipe UNLESS you're told so by the OP
And you HAVE HAVE HAVE to wipe going from Touchwiz to AOSP
Don't give out false information, if your device can miraculously flash ROMs with out wiping that's amazing
But don't put other in dangerous situations where they might freak out or even possibly brick their phones
Sent from my SGH-I747 using Tapatalk 2
Thanks for the answers i'll consider about flashing a rom but if i don't is there any kind of mod's anywhere that i can flash especially for tethering?
If people don't wanna full wipe, let them learn the hard way.

I've been flashing a lotta new roms lately so just seeing if I'd wanna flash this one or not
Screenshots are up on page 784 of the thread. I'm downloading it now so no other impressions. Looks good though.
I am using JB 4.1.2, Jedi Mind Trick JB2 build with the beta kernel as a DD. Prior to I was using JMT X4 and this is much nicer IMO.
No issues on my end and all working as it should except for what dev knows about and is working on but those are not show stoppers for me.
Try it you will like it but follow directions

I have been flashing roms since the original droid and have made many mistakes, even when I thought I knew exactly what I was doing. That said, after not following the instructions to the letter and having issues, I did follow them and "walla" NO problems. I found that letting it sit the full 10 minutes and using app2zip for program restore works perfectly. Don't theme or modify for a while, let it get use to the new rom. It is smooth, fast and stable.
there are issues with JMT 2.1
there was a lot of SOD=Sleep of Death issues
and cannot get past boot screen issues...
I went back to 1.1 for now and seems good...
btw... there is news of a new kernel version to come out tonight...

That shouldn't really be happening. I used to run the Jedi Jelly 5 and that was from a leak and my phone lasted 24 hours at minimum. Get some wakelock apps and see why your phone isn't sleeping.

Loved JediKnight 6. Just waiting for it to be as smooth. Hopefully there will be a 5*5 display option. Until then I am on stock JB.

Just updated the rom today, works REALLY well. Most Buttery smooth stock-ish rom I've ever played with. If I didn't know better, I'd say it had v6 baked in. Or at least some of the edits.
I'd highly recommend it if you're looking for a stock rom, debloated, and running stable. Has Vol Wake mod, which I personally hate, but it's honestly not that bad as far as battery.
Stock battery and moderate usage I can last all day before having to throw it on the charger. By moderate, I mean a few hours of Memedroid, XDA, and Chrome. Perhaps an hour or two of gaming and some phone calls with a bit of texting.
JMT JB3 is out as of yesterday
It's running super smooth seems all good
the toggles even work now
only thing is the little battery glitch
where when fully charged you pull out at 100%
and it drops to 97% or 96% instantly
I am sure ptmr3 will fix that soon
This bug is universal with tmo jellybean roms

I'm on JMTv6 haven't flashed in a long time and trying to update to JMT JB.
I think everyone else seems to know what they're doing, so there arent any detailed tutorials but could you guys elaborate on these for a noob:
TWRP Recovery Recommended! Downloaded and it downloaded some script recovery...what else do I have to do?
ALWAYS FULL WIPE! - how? do I need some darkside wipe script through CWM?
-Download ROM - done
-Backup your apps with preferred method(app2zip is great) - done
-Nandroid - what is this? how do i download/use it?
-Wipe data ( factory data reset) - in CWM recovery?
-Wipe system (Format system (in mounts/storage) if on CWM) - same as above?
-DO NOT RESTORE DATA!!! - uhhh...then how do I get my stuff back?

Download goo manager, go to menu and install recovery alternative, that will give you twrp.
Full wipe is an old term that refers to wiping everything. Twrp handles most of the wiping upon flashing. All you need to do is a factory reset, then flash the ROM off your choice. A dalvik and cache wipe after its optional, but not required. Though has been known to prevent issues.
Nandroid means to backup your current ROM. It's literally a snapshot of your current phone setup. Including apps, settings, and ROM. You can restore any time you want and it will be like you never left. It's built into recovery, just select backup/restore
Some ROMs don't want you to restore data. Jmt says it to prevent conflicting data. I don't see how it could hurt as long as it's just apps and not system apps, I'll have to test this, but basically, it means don't restore your data partition from a previous Nandroid. Titanium backups are fine to restore.
Any other questions just pm me. Writing this from my phone so if I forgot something let me know

I came back to the jmt jb ROM after leaving the ICS version for AOKP mr1 builds and the Sons of Androids ROMS (which both frickin rock! btw). But when I returned to the jb version of jmt, v3 to be exact, I found it drained my battery VERY fast. Anyone else having this issue? Am I just spoiled by the customization freedom of the Sons of Android?

Do you do a clean wipe every time you install a new rom? Clean wipe cache, dalvik, data, system, internal sd? Try downloading rom thru pc then transfer to your sd.

I would definitely try a different kernel. Maybe your phone can only handle stock kernels or something which Jedi doesn't use. Having a CM kernel still lingering through a flash while running Jedi can't be too good either, it's possible that's what happened? Go back to just stock rooted and see if the problem remains.

That's where you will find a stock ROM. Flash the factory image with Odin. If you don't know what stock is or how to flash a kernel it's best to go back to stock and don't run custom ROMS. Just read the thread I linked and post any questions about the process in that thread.
You can flash the factory image using Mobile Odin from the Play Store and there's an option to keep root.

Phone is rooted now I need help with installing cyanogen mod.

Good day everyone.
I have successfully rooted my S3 1747.
I have done a backup after installing Rom manager. I also have a nandroid and titanium backup completed.
I would like to install cyanogen mod but its very important that I am able to get my contacts back.
I plan to install through the so called easy method in rom manager.
Am I able to get my stuff back after the install?
Thanks in advance
Most system app data will not be compatible. I don't know about CM, but in TW there's an option to export contacts to SD. It'll save them in a .CSV file. Maybe you can import them to CM contacts like this. Might want to confirm that first though.

Thanks for the reply. I'm going to do this later. Does cyanogen live up to the hype?
Everyone has their own preference. I personally like touchwiz better. There are plenty who would agree and disagree.
If you've got a nandroid backup of your current set up, its pretty easy to flash a bunch of different ones to see what you like, and then go back if none keep your interest.

When you say cm installer. I assumes you are talking about the app and pc program that does everything automatically. It says my phone is compatible however wouldn't work originally. I had to root and use twrp. Can I use that to update from now on or should I continue to use twrp?

Edit - double post
Well for me cwm is the easiest to use as you just wipe and flash.....its purely up to you, if your gunna use twrp just download the zip boot recovery wipe system, cache, dalvik cache, data (factory reset), and hit install zip and bam you got cyanogen
I wouldn't wipe /system before a flash. If the rom fails to flash youll have no OS to boot into, and it can be a huge pain to get it back. If the rom does flash, its first step will be to format /system, so it gets done anyway.
I think this may be one of those things people used to have to do on some older devices, and was carried on to newer ones. I just think its an unneeded extra step, and more than a few times ended up taking a day or two to help people get their device working right again.

That's good advice that would have helped me a lot. All the instructions I followed online said to wipe/format everytime.
Sent from my SGH-I747M using Tapatalk
Yeah, its extremely common advice. I see it all the time. There are rare times when it is necessary to format system, but I dont feel a rom flash is one of them.
Its still possible to end up with no OS after a failed flash, but the chances are greatly decreased by eliminating that one step!
