[Q] ICS ROM's that have a 5-Bar Signal Indicator - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

So... Does it bother anyone else that the AT&T based ICS ROM's come out with a non-working 5th-bar in the signal indicator? I don't code (would love to figure out how to code), but I am sure this isn't easy to ask... but is there anyway to get one of 2 things to work within those ICS ROM's??? 1. Make a 4-bar TMO stock/ICS themed signal indicator... or.... 2. Make the damn 5th bar just work...? This may be the dumbest request ever made by a member, but I am a purist and just want things to work the way they are designed within ROM's. Stock sucks, but perfection is better.. If anyone catches where I am going with that... Its just annoying to look down and realize you have full service, but the ROM is not coded to reflect that...
Just a thought.
Thanks for reading.

That's just a matter of switching icons around and renaming them in the systemui.apk
I advise you grab the latest sdk and apk manager and poke around.
I also have theming tutorials in the themes and apps section here. Find and watch my videos. They are bound to help you.

Video how to?

I am sorry if this was posted before, but I was looking at some of the guides for learning how to make themes. I have never done anything like this before or done any of this type of programming, but would like to try and learn how to.
But I am a person that learns better with watching what must be done then actually reading it lol. Is it possible for someone who does themes for the epic can possibly post or make videos on how to actually start learning how to make themes from the stock files? Like setting up the different programs needed and then maybe doing a sample of how to actually make a theme from the stock.
I hope I am not offending anyone for asking this, but I find this site very fascinating but like I said I am very new to this type of programming or working with android phones.
But I will understand if this is not possible to do since so many people have different ways of working and might not be able to show there work. But any possible help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you all for your time and patience.
youtube has given me knowledge a time or two.
There are a bunch of how to's all over these forums. Some have videos. feel free to ask questions and myself and others will help

Ok first of I know of many questions lol....Even tho froyo is out now, do we the eclipse plugin for adb? I follow the written tutorial to install sdk and the apk manager app.
But I did not install the eclipse adt plugin that the guide talked about, is it necessary even tho we are on froyo currently?
Also what would be a very good starting point for a newbie? Should I focus on a specific field of the android devices or is themeing very different from the other aspects of modding the epic phones?
I have yet to use eclipse on any theme I been apart of. I use apkmanager to de compile and re compile .apks. I use notepad ++ to edit xml files. Xml files can only be edited when the apk had been de compiled. I use gimp for image editing. You can use any photo editing program you like. I use 7zip to brite and put the images in the apk. Baksmali and smali for editing .dex files.
I suggest reading the how to's as they explain everything in detail.

I learned everything on my own. I didn't have anyone to teach me. I taught thomasskull666 and where working on some good projects. Me and dreamsforgotten are always bouncing ideas off of each other. If you see my eclair build I was the imply theme with the reboot options that I will port over to froyo once we get an official build. I also have two other things I figured out for froyo that you can see in my froyo build. I labeled all the silent options correctly to vibrate and I removed the sprint branding. Its hard to believe I was like you when I got my epic. I didn't know ****.

I'm 26. Its not hard to learn the basics. Xml for the most part is well writtin so making those changes are somewhat easy. Smali is a ***** to edit and that I'm still learning. For the most part a theme is 95% images.

I want to be a themer.

I want to contribute back to XDA for the help I received on rooting, flashing, ROM, Kernel, CWM, etc... The only way that I can do is by working on themes. I'm not sure how hard it is, but its complicated already. I do have Notepad++ and 7zip. I do not have GIMP, but I do have Photoshop 7 (which I will always stay with). I could try to use GIMP, if that is really required.
What is best for me? Work off of current themes to make adjustments, improve, etc? I dunno. Maybe something that I can work with someone on, such as if someone provide a theme, and I can work on providing multiple colors for the theme. Really need to know what I should work off of. I have bookmarked several topics and have been reading.
For me, reading on my own is not really a stable learning option (as in not that easy as it seem). I learn best through one-on-one communication (such as hands on, etc), so I'd like to partner up with someone that will be willing to do that. Such as PM, email, or messenger (AIM, YIM, or MSN).
Anyway, I'd really like to learn to keep themes alive for Epic, because new phones keep coming out and people just simply move on. I'd obviously stay with my Epic for a few years.
Oh, I'm sticking to EC05 for at least a year or so.

I personally think, and I truly mean no offense or disrespect, that if you want to theme and are going to stay on ec05 for at least a year you are wasting your time. I doubt that anyone, especially those that would use a theme, is going to stay on ec05 once official gingerbread comes out. Many people, including myself, are already using the leaks. But if you want to do it I suggest downloading some themes you like and comparing them to stock to see the differences. If you already know photoshop than basic themes are easy. It is simply modifying images in the framework-res.apk and twframework-res.apk files. It gets more difficult when you want to work with xml files and the .9.png files. The best thing to do is start with the how to theme thread. That will get you going.

I've been testing my abilities at theming with the new ef02 leaks its really time consuming, but I'm going to stick to it, I'm sure I can get better with practice. Besides regular png's and nine patch png's what else should I learn also?

Really those are the biggest things to start with. Knowing where everything goes, pngs and 9s are all you need for the basics. To get advanced you will want to learn about decompiling xml files, changing them and compiling them back.

I have been theming for a while, but mostly for personal use. I started with the Samsung Moment, and have been making my own themes for the Epic since I got it. 7zip, apk manager, xultimate, gimp, and draw9patch are all programs I use on a daily basis. I have learned a lot from other themers, and a lot from tearing the files down and comparing them with different themes. Good luck.
I really envy you all that are good with graphic development. I have never been good at that. I know enough to get by but would really like to know how to make really nice looking graphics myself.

You could start with decompiling the framework res and replacing the images with ur own found images. then compile and try it out. that's the most simple method of starting

I was just about to say that... you'd only need to decompile if your editing xmls or what not. Images can be swapped through 7zip.

You only need to decompile to work with xml files and the 9s. And you don't have to do it for the 9s but it makes it a lot easier.

I usually create a new folder, copy all the images from the compiled apk using 7zip (example: \system\app\Contacts.apk\res\drawable-hdpi\) to the new folder, edit the images I want, then drag them back to the compiled apk. The only time I decompile really is when I need to change the text color, or add images that arent currently being used(battery mod, locksreen mod, reboot mod).
One thing that I do for icons and such is create a .psd. It makes it a lot easier than trying to do the same thing for each icon when you have a standard .psd to work with. I have done a lot of my own battery icons using a .psd.
OP, More themes is never a bad thing. I used to cook roms back in the winmo days, but when I moved to android I realized that being a rom chef was probably out of my league so I started making themes.
Basic themes can be made in a 5-10 hours, but more complicated themes, and some ports can take 30+ hours to make. Their are several great themers here that I'm sure are willing to help. I would start by reading dreams how to thread about 5 times. If you get stuck, you can post in that thread, normally someone will answer your question quickly. Also, if you think I can help, feel free to shoot me a PM.

I agree with everything stated above, reading and understanding the guide is step one, step two is (in my opinion) to familiarize yourself with the framework and what does what. Then what I did is port a theme just for fun, boot it up and go from there doing the whole troubleshooting process. That's the way to learn

[REQUEST] AOKP/CM9 themes port

Could we see any, if not all these themes?!

It states at the top
Do not copy the images... meaning ports are a NO. Sorry
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
You could probably port it for personal use and not share if you know how but no one is going to port it for everyone as he made it very clear to not copy his images.
Not sure if it makes a difference, but it also say this in the op:
"It's impossible for me to make zip files for all phones/ROMs on xda, so please follow this simple guide to create the flashable zips yourself."
Wouldn't that make it OK for our themers to make us some flashables?

Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk 2
no, because thats what he's saying not to do. If you know how to port them for personal use then its ok but do not post a port on XDA of it to share.
the top disclaimer is referring to people stealing his work and using it in their roms and claiming as their own or making money off it. But porting it to our AOKP and posting it here isn't an issue with him.
it might be uncool to port it, but it's not like you could get in any trouble for doing it. xda is about sharing. and sharing is caring. and putting a meaningless disclaimer at the top of a thread has no effect. at least legally... they're not even original pictures. he definitely doesn't have a "license" for them either. i highly doubt he either registered or was even able to obtain a copyright on a single one of the images used. plus he's in Canada, so any Canadian protections don't apply once he's sharing them with people in the U.S. Just sayin..
good find.
Oooor, you just PM the creator and ask if its ok to port it, and tell them that you'll give them special credit, and show them your thread when you're done. Its what I did for Blazing Blue Flame
~E.R.A.
LUCID looks wonderful. I might have to look into porting some of these (after making sure it is OK with the themer of course).
Well, he does not want anyone creating and distributing flashables. So I'm not going to bother.

Want the theme? Port it yourself. Perfectly reasonable, especially if he wants to ever sell them(CM9 themes on market, for instance)

He created the themes, and I'm sure he put a lot of work them, so that is that.
The only problem I see is the troubles with getting the framework-res to recompile properly, however once the CM9 theme manager is merged and he releases the themes on the market or on XDA somewhere that will be a non issue.

Yepp Yepp.
~E.R.A.
i read through the thread, the op doesnt state anywhere not to port these themes, nor does it say not to make flashable zips. in fact, someone has ported the theme for the nexus s and nexus s4g and posted flashables to this post located in that same very thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=25459699&postcount=58
that same person has stated that if you pull the framework-res.apk and the systemUI.apk from your rom of choice he will post a flashable zip in his free time.
so, as usual, misinformation and straight up lies abound on xda. if you are up to porting these themes to the epic, its a go, i think that all sonny wants is full credit for the themes and images, and that you link back to his original post like the other guy did.
sonny also states in a later post in the thread, that if you arent up to decompiling the apks yourself you'll need to find someone else to do it for you and "that person is not me."
... misinformation... explain why when tbob asked sonny if he could port the theme.. he denied him permission.

Ok, I don't know much but hopefully they get this solved I really like his ROM..
Why? He just updates his rom more commonly (all 800mb+) and breaks things a lot and steals others hard work without asking, or giving credit to them. (Allegedly), with proof, of course. I say use Frosty or Evil with the available themes in the themes and apps section. Xquizits roms always seemed okay... but too many broken things caused by pointless updates that are way too huge and should only require a seperate flashable 20mb zip.

Yes I agree, I have been with his ROM since I stopped using MIUI and yesterday I was lossed when I saw the message stating that I was closed. I am hoping everything works out for him as well
There's a deference in using someones work and saying thanks to them, or giving credit, and stealing there work without asking and claiming it to be your own. Pretty much being a thief... If people were to donate to him cause of his rom that is wrongfully going to the person. EvilArt created hidden code and such in his work and he posted that XquiziT was using it in his roms and not giving credit. Other's have mentioned this as well about his roms. It's sad and sucks and I hope there was just some confusion, but evidence is evidence.
Another one gone because of freaking drama...

Yes I used the word "Wicked" in my Rom but nothing else. Wanam's 15 toggle code is where that word
came from a compare I did when my mod was fc'ing. I have done all my own mods why would I use Wicked's and the SystemUI.apk at that. Nothing special about that file and prob 85% or more of the S3 Roms are the same mods and would compare except the word "Wicked" that yes I included.
Anyway I will keep doing Roms for myself but will no longer be a part of XDA. Not because of XDA, because of what goes on there.
Thanks for all who supported me but as I have said before I take no donations as this is my fun and learning experience.

Well that sucks. I like Wild's ROMs and he may have took others work, but hell....the same code floats around from DEV to DEV anyway.
SN: Wicked ROM is actually pretty nice. I tried it once it was proven that Wild was stealing code from Evil. I think Wicked ROM needs inverted apps though. They make the ROMs like so much more classier!
Anyway, thanks Wild for all of your work and efforts. You put a lot of time into updating your ROMs and I'm sad to see you go bro.

[Q] Hi! I'm new and don't understand a thing.

I recently am an owner of a SGS3. And it's quite a change if you have had a blackberry before.. ( Yes I know those things are things from hell ) Yet, I've seen things on the web about rooting and flashing rom's and mods etc. I read the Ref Guide which is stickied. But still.. I have no clue about it all. The only thing I want to do is have a ICS Status bar on my phone, you know the status bar with the blue icons. I've already downloaded one from the play store but that one is crap. Now, I am on Android 4.1.2. and yeah I really want some more and simple info. And definitely want the status bar.
Thanks in advance!
JV
If I'm thinking correctly you would want something like CM10. 1 or AOKP or a tw rom that you can theme to look like ICS

Everything you need, save CM itself, can be found in my signature.
What Blackberries did you have? I had the 8380 with VZW then the 9700 with TMo.

Cm is a bad idea for someone who doesn't even know what it is or what anything in the reference guide is for that matter. The OP probably barely knows how to work android it seems. I prefer them to learn their phone before trying to root and flashing things I can see many part coming from them about their phone being dead and won't turn on.
Read some more and watch YouTube videos on this phone and learn what rooting/flashing custom roms are. For your phones sake. PM me with any questions and I will simply link you something to read.

@OP, I do understand. I went from a blackberry to an HD2 and now to the sg3. I've hacked the heck out of all 3 devices. XDA is a most excellent place to learn all things android. Follow the advice given and read, read and read some more. If I, a 54 year old grandma can learn the ins and outs of all these phones, I know it's possible for anyone else to do it too.

Glad I stepped in when I did, the OP has a I-9300, links that would've been given would have ended up with him and a fancy paper weight and a headache.
