CyanogenMod 9 Alpha 1 - Samsung Galaxy W I8150

HI all,
I've flashed CWM5.5 from the recomended thread and installed Cyanogen 9 Alpha 1. Unfortunatly the phone seems to boot up but does never leave the boot animation screen (yes I've also flashed gapps after cyanogen).
Anyone can identify this pattern? On a normal device I could hook it up through a serial cable and try to debug the boot... Eventually how can I do that with a I8150?
Well, any help would be most welcome. I'm totally available for testing and I do have some experience with Linux even at a very low level/system space.

Install
Use CWM5.
Warning: Only use this recovery to flash CM9. Otherwise, you risk bricking your phone!
Wipe data and cache.
Flash update*.zip.
Flash gapps*.zip. You must flash gapps after every upgrade to CM9 since /system is formatted, wiping your previous add-ons.
Reboot phone.
After you setup your Google account, reinstall the three apps from Market in order to restore most of your apps, call log and SMS history.
Warning: Do not restore backup data of system apps!
If you restore a bad backup with cached settings in telephony.db in data/data/com.*.*.telephony it can break MMS.
It seems that restoring backups can also break Calendar sync.
read it thoroughly ...
1st you must flash update*.zip
2nd gapps*.zip
that just about it ....
what is your current kernel ?

That was pretty much it... I've restored not the original operator crap ROM, but instead the Value Pack ROM.
CyanogenMod9 seemed to install ok, but just looped and the phone didn't finished the boot. I'm not really sure on what happened. I'm just finishing restoring the stuff

I'm guessing you didn't wipe data/cache.

I did a factory reset, but sure, it might not have wiped the whole thing... Going to try again.

@argo68
True mate, the issue was not wiping the user cache. I've wiped the cache now from ClockWorkMod and it worked ok. Takes some time to boot compared to the stock samsung ROMs but it works fine
Anything you need tested ? I can most likely help.
I do have a problem with apps though, for example, GMAIL doesn't show the body of the message... as you can see on the screenshot, but I guess this is a app related issue maybe?
http://susepaste.org/images/39081870.png

After a reboot somehow it boots a bit faster and the gmail app is now displaying the body of the email and it seems a bit faster...
Good work, gonna ride this for a few days and see what happens.
@argo68
If you need beta testers, let me know. I'm off work this days but can't wait to get into my lab and check this stuff deeper

@argo68
he is arco68
just in case he takes offence, which I don't believe he would

Maybe it's the Nordic ascendance. They fight a bear with one hand while holding the beer with the other.

Hi I'm using this cyanogen mod for quite a few days now. The back side of the phone is always warm and the battery is drained very fast. Anyone have this similar problem?
I'm sure that I install the ROM correctly as i cleared everything on the phone with CWM 5.0.0.4 before and after. (Phone data / Cache Partition / Dalvik Cache / Battery Cache)
Any help would be appretiated

No such problem here. You should use an app to check what frequency the phone is running at in idle, and also how much load there is on the cpu.

you're 100% right...and here my two cents, just to help you:
@capy put it in the op if you want)
Perfect installation
-go to recovery (4ext or CWM)
--format* system, data, cache (wipe|format in 4ext recovery, mounts and storage in CWM)
note:*format is not the same as wipe. Wipe clean partition's data. Format clean partition's data and also parition's files.
---now chose wipe data factory reset (you MUST do this)
----flash rom
How to set the rom in a proper way
-after flash process, boot the rom
--DON'T restore your apps through your google account..just skip that part
---once in home, let the rom fully boot (wait 10 minutes)
----now reboot (NOT hot restart, just reboot)*
*please note that at the very first boot your free ram is always about 150\170Mb, after the second reboot, your ram will be 200\250, it means that reboot the phone after flash, and before doing anything to set the rom is better.
-----now you can restore your app through titanium, or recovery restoring your data partition, or whatever.
**NOTE: i suggest you to install the rom after a sd format (fat32, 32Kb), also I suggest you to flash any mods, just like supercharger, RunnyUV or whatever, even themes, BEFORE restoring your fb,twitter, google accounts. Install sd increase, set it on 2048, is good for your sd cache....be sure you have a nand backup, so you can easily fix any issue.
if you follow these steps, you won't have any issue, and even if an issue occurrs, you are able to detect where the problem is.รง
Don't Also mind to change bootanimation it has no use and can damage ur phone

not had many issues with the DEV ICS
Thanks for the tips tho!
I know people always want to the do minimalist thing when installing a new ROM and hate the fact that they are recommended to fully wipe.
I work in IT and treat my phone like my PC and I would always prefer to fully wipe and install fresh than do an upgrade or bodge repair and keep my existing data.
Some people don't use their phone like I do and I don't mind losing old messages or call history so I just fully wipe everytime I flash a new ROM and I've never had FC on any of the roms I try.
I often think it's because people don't wipe and just do the minimalist thing they can to upgrade their ROM, which most likely causes the most hassle!

Bootloops on every restart using CM 7.2

Hello everyone,
I got me a GIO for christmas and I'm quite content with this phone, but I've had frequent reboots due to a bug in the WLAN driver (as far as I have read). So I decided to install a custom ROM and I chose CM 7.2, which works great most of the time apart from one major annoyance: every time I restart the phone (had to switch it off during exams, the phone's misbehaving, whatever reason) I'm getting into bootloops. The only solution: wipe user data, reflash, wipe user data, restore all settings, etc.
I read that these bootloops aren't uncommon, but I feel that I should be able to reboot my phone without having to set everything up again.
So my questions are: a) Is it perfectly normal what I am experiencing? b) Is there something obvious I am doing wrong? c) What could I do better? Is there a good way to backup my user data and restore it into a fresh system without having to reboot? How could I possible get rid of those bootloops? How could I help the ROMs developer to help me get rid of the bootloops?
I'd be very thankful for any directions

Hi voetbalremco,
Thank you for your prompt reply. I have installed Titanium Backup now, for all I have read that should at least make restoring my "system" after a re-flash more bearable. The only thing I'm worrying about is that the TB wiki states that I have to reboot the phone after restoring system settings, but thanks again for the hint. I'll tell you how it worked, when (hopefully if) I run into the need of a re-flash.

Maybe your download was corrupt or whatever... try re-downloading the latest CM7.2.
I doubt that the download was corrupt. I have had this problem for various versions now (CM7.1RC + subsequent patches, CM7.2 + patch). But just to make sure, are the md5 sums of the original files anywhere?
Is there a way I could turn off the boot animation and get debug output on the screen so I can see what's going on when it bootloops?

[Q] SGS2 memory problems

So the other day i go put on a new rom and boot into TWRP to wipe and install. so i do my normal thing (wipe data/system/cache then install rom and gapps then wipe cache again. then reboot. i let it do its 10 min thing. then start to use the phone again. same problem as before (launcher constantly crashing) so i do my wipe and install again. this time i notice i have significantly less room on my data partition. so i go and do another wipe and install to check. this time even less space. i do it a couple more times to see if maybe it will fill up the space and then maybe completely wipe everything. no such luck. no my phone is basically useless with no way to install an OS or boot into the current one. any help on actually doing a real full wipe so that i have room again? i prepared to use odin or whatever i need to do to revert back to full stock then start all over again with the root process just to refresh my skills and get everything brand new again.
please any info would be great since id like to have a working phone again (pulled out the old iphone 4 in the mean time)
thanks guys!
Did you try a full system wipe using Infamous or Dark side to begin with? Try that first before doing anything else and see what happens.

ok ill try that out and let you know
update: seems to have worked have a new rom installed. hopefully it keeps running without a hitch. thank you very much. i wish i had known twrp had a crappy delete function and that it could be cast aside in favor of darkside or infamous.

TWRP has a Dalvik cache wipe which, IMO, is basically a factory reset. There may be more to it than I'm aware of. I'm not a dev, so I really can't say one way or another. Infamous and Darkside both have the full wipe which does everything. Anytime I flash a new ROM, I'll run Infamous followed by the TWRP wipe. Haven't had a problem, yet.
Glad it all worked out for you. I know what it's like to be in a situation like that. Been there, myself, a couple of times.

Virus???? Idk but phone is messed up

Ok here it goes. my network service is off so i use my droin inc for games and such. running custom rom wildstang83 IceCream Scencless 1.0. im not sure what happened to my phone but i left for 3 days and come back to my phone being totally jacked up. It wot dl apps the google play reverted back to the old market icon. wont save my passwords for google sighn in. every time i go to youtube it says to re dl the google play services. im sure other stuff is messed up too. i have tried to flash another rom but when it gets loaded back up it keeps saying process. whatever failed and there a bunch of those that loop and i have to pull battery. when i try to factory reset it says everything was formatted but when i reboot phone its the sme as it was before apps and all. So is there anyone out there who can help me with this. Sorry if i posted in the wrong place or what not. i wasnt sure where to post it cuz its kinda an advanced question but not really a question just need help.
not a virus but it does sound like your phone might have exhausted all the space in the /data folder. I had a similar thing happen to me before I rooted and fixed my phone where i exhausted the space, itt went a factory reset and put the phone into an unusable state.
i don;t know anything about the rom you are running but are rooted and have CWM installed? if so, you should be able flash a new ROM to your device, GAPPS and optionally, the low space disk fix.

Yes i do have cwm but i tried to flash a new rom via the recovery section. after i choose the zip to flash everything goes as expected untill after the reboot and it goes into the setup part where u have to put gmail password and stuff in then it basically freezes up with unlimited process failures. but i will try again. cant hurt from where it is now.
if you are not doing so already, i would wipe cache and dalvik cache after flashing the rom. that may fix the FCs.
I would also suggest you run a newer jelly bean ROM like Tiny;s 5-16 with his version of GAPPS(4-05) version plus the low space disk fix so you can maintain parity with what is the latest.
I am currently using evervolve 6-25 and it is working well for me.
the reason I say that is these newer JB roms have the ability to let you skip the activation easily. I don;t know if it was some feature of GB roms but the activation wizard in the JB roms seem to be better my opinion.
When switching to a different ROM, it is crucial to wipe /system. This can be a source of FCs. Also, if switching, it is also a good idea to do factory reset.

I just flashed another rom i used in the past by the same dev and so this is my step by step. 1. choose zip from sd. 2. factory reset. 3. wipe dalvik cache. 4. wipe cache partition. If this doesnt work i will try jb roms but i would hate to have to dump the dev that im useing. there the most stabe roms i have come across so far

what do u mean wipe /system. where do i find that. only reason i ask is cuz maybe ive never done that. but i have never had a problem withthe other 15 roms i have flashed before so thats why im so confused about what happened to my phone. all i did was shut it off and leave it home. nothing changed from my daily use before that and it was working top notch before i shut it off
im getting settings fc. youtube fc, my uploads fc, market fc, clock widget fc, internet fc, rss reader fc, htc sence fc, all those off of a fresh flash ad new sd card
Just lost my bckups that were saved on sd card so now i cant even get on it i dont get it. its not bricked but yet it i unstabe to run any rom but the preivious saved backup (now there deleted)
maybe the rom you downloaded is corrupt. worst case scenerio is that your phone is on it;s last legs.....
i would suggest you try downloading the JB rom and Gapps plus the low space fix.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2050930
it;s kind of proven to work in my opinion. the 5-16 build is pretty stable.
what I do is flash the rom zip, gapps zip and low space zip, then wipe cache and dalvik. it probably should not make a difference but I am using TWRP as my recovery instead of CWM.
goodluck!

Thank u and its still not working. probably just takeing a dump on me now it is just bootlooping.
when i do a factory reset i get a wipe completed. but it says "no app2sd partition found. Skipping format of /sd-ext" could that be part of the issue?? ive never noticed that before
i don;t know if switching to TWRP might help you but it might be worth a try. maybe a coincidence but the last time I had a screw up on my Dinc installing a ROM, i was using CWM. I switch right after that. I think i did read something about TWRP specifically supporting the EXT4 Low space fix.
maybe someone more knowledgable can chime in.

[Q] Having weird issues, could it be my setup?

Let me start off by saying that I bought this phone already rooted so I didn't have a chance to learn with it. Every time I flash any rom that people say should work well, it doesn't work great for me. I flashed the latest version of TWRP myself. Now, in order to get a good flash, what should my mounts be set to? Currently they are preload, ext sd, and internal. I don't know what I'm doing wrong but even on something as stable as cm 10, I still have issues. (Slowness, no gps even after fix, and some other small stuff). Help please and again, I am a total noob so I apologize for that.
This also causes problems when I install a kernel. It will never load the system. Even if I wait one hour, do a hard reboot and wait another hour, it still won't load. I'm sure I'm doing something wrong, but what?

What version of TWRP are you using? I heard 2.6 may have some issues?? Also, did you do proper wiping procedures, such as factory reset, cache wipe, dalvik cache wipe, etc before modding a new ROM? Which new ROM are you flashing, and did you flash a new radio with it?

First, what is it flashing procedure? I should be downloading rom to ur external/internal SD card, then boot to recovery and make a backup of data, boot, and system partitions, then wipe dalvik cache, system, data, and cache 3x each, then go back to main menu and choose install, find the rom and flash it, if aosp also flash gapps, then reboot, shouldn't be having any issues if u follow that procedure, and upon first reboot let the phone sit for around ten min or so to let everything settle, the first few days or so things will still be settling in so give it 3 full battery cycles before u start guaging performance, I'm on twrp 2.6 and never had an issue yet an I'm a flash addict, u could also try reverting to stock with Odin and then starting over, Odin give a more complete system wipe so u may have some corrupt files somewhere, but like I said if u follow that procedure u should be ok
