Have there been any pics released of the official car dock for Droid X? Or any other Droid X-specific car docks?
There have been. There were videos as well. I cannot remember where though. I want to know how it knows when it is plugged in and if this could be replicated so that I can use a cheaper dock...
http://lmgtfy.com/?q=droid+x+car+dock
lol at navychief52 I didn't know such a thing, i'm going to use it all the time now.
But yes it can be replicated, here's the new feature though that you loose by using a generic car dock. It has a built in charging port, which means you can just slide your phone into the dock and not have to wire up a charger to it too.
as for the part where you put it in and it automatically starts up the car app, all you need is a magnet, atleast thats how i found the last droid docks worked. I don't know what strength it has to be for it's magnetic sensor to trigger the app, but I don't think it has to be very powerful at all. But I would glue that to the back of your generic car dock and you should be good to go. I know thats what I'll be doing.

Ah thanks for that! I figured it would just be a magnet but wasn't sure. If I could find a dock with a nice beefy arm like the oem car dock then I would just use that. So far the only kind that I find are the ones that have a long bendable metal tube. Need something with more strength... To be fair I have not been looking too hard core yet.
I just do not like the idea of buying a dock for a device that I will probably not have a year later...
Besides the Droid X being unveiled today in New York, this car dock made an appearance as well.
can you keep the line in audio plug plugged into the car dock or do you need to plug it in manually to the phone everytime? I use a line in plug
I've looked at everything, but I cannot find an answer to this.

It has a cable loom on the car dock for the wire however it goes into the phone.
Only the USB goes to the dock.
They really need to figure out a pass through or something for these things.
At least the dock is very solid and easy to use. But agreed, would have been nice to plug jack into dock and dock have attached short cable to go into phone. So even if you have to plug every time, it is made easier.
Looks like I'll just get this bluetooth adapter for my car instead.

Anyone know of something similar that plugs into an aux line like this one? I might get this, but I'm open to different stuff if it's better.

just ordered this: https://www.wiredforless.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=SOUNDM2
when you check out, use the coupon code: WOOT for $20 off ($9.99 total including shipping)
can't beat that price and it looks like a pretty solid car dock. first review mentions that it is good with the Droid X.
thanks for the heads up! it looks pretty good! however, im concerned with the adhesive disk that is applied to our devices.... does it stick out... and would it affect cases and other things etc...
i honestly am not sure, but i ordered a ****ty $1 silicone case from ebay that i'll be using with the mount haha.
Silcon isn't that the soft cases? i'm not sure that would hold my phone tight enough, i drive a truck so there is lots of bouncing around. I think i'm gonna buy a cheep belt clip case, that way i can just clip the phone in and out.
so my mount came in literally 2 days after i ordered. ridiculously fast shipping; they must be located nearby. haven't installed yet but it's pretty small and unobtrusive. seems like a good buy thus far. the discs that stick to the back of your device (comes with 2) are a lot skinnier than i thought they would be. might just put it on my normal everyday case. i don't think i'll run into problems slipping it in and out of my project with the disc on the back.
I've ordered mine as well as ordering a cheep belt clip so i can snap it in and out. Too me the twisting motion (while awesome for the secure locking) seems a bit much for my lifestyle of always jumping in and out of my car.
Ill probably use the 2nd disc on the same clip so i can have landscape and portrait

Just ordered one myself. For $10 shipped, I figured I might as well give it a shot.
I got my "Slip Grip" mount in the mail today and for the $20 bucks it cost it is very much worth it.
The mount is VERY sturdy, seller shipped it same day too!! Check it out!
Only downside is it is just a mount, it doesn't have any plugs for power n such, but does leave all of the ports available if you had like a car charger or AUX cable running while it is in there.
Got the car mount from vzw today have to say it is bulkier than my Droid 1 mount, but that is expected with this phone. Looks good on the dash mount in an F250.

Judging from the pictures, it looks like you probably do have to take it out of the case. It seems to be a pretty snug fit. I haven't been able to find any reviews/feedback about the car dock, tho. So I can't confirm.
Finally available, I'll probably get it from the egg. Does anyone know if the phone detects that it is in a dock as apposed to just being plugged in?

The desk dock does trigger the phone to pull up either desk home or other things like some dock clock apps. I'd imagine the car dock will either will do the same thing, or know that's it is the car dock and do something specific to that.
One annoying thing on the desk dock is it has an audio out port, which would be great as the speaker is hard to hear considering the dock fits nice and snug. But they also give a nice announcement paper with the dock saying the audio out feature will work when Froyo is released for the phone.
With all the background noise in a car, audio out would be even more important. Since they seem to have cut a hole out in the mount where the speaker is, I'm guessing they're going the practical route with it and not counting on Froyo.

That's interesting so this pretty much proves the GPS issue is because of the hardware in the phone, right?

Thats what I thought at first too, but Im not entirely sure. The TomTom has its own GPS software in it as well, so you're bypassing the i987 entirely, both software and hardware. There is an app called "Bluetooth GPS Provider" that just reads what the TomTom is transmitting and uses it instead.
I received the Samsung Captivate Vehicle Mount and I'm very impressed with the quality of the piece. I had been using one of the generic mounts (mGrip) and although it did it's job, I wasn't satisfied. Most generic mounts use a flexible gooseneck stalk to hold the phone. This flexibility allows the phone to bounce and vibrate - it's just not steady.
There is no flexibility in the Samsung mount. No bobbing and weaving . . . none!! The phone is positioned in the mount securely and accurately, and once the phone is installed the piece with the power usb connector slides into the phone to secure the connection. There is also an external speaker jack that will become functional once we receive froyo 2.2.
When the phone is put into the mount and the mount connector piece is slid into position to mate with the phone, the phone automatically goes into the navigation desktop providing 5 large icons for the navigation functions.
The mount comes with a car charger cord included, no need to purchase one separately. Price is kind of high at $50, but it will be cheaper on eBay or discount sides if you're willing to wait awhile longer.
If you're looking for a high quality mount that provides an exact fit for your phone, proper automatic insertion and alignment (via the sliding power bracket) of the mini-usb connector and rock solid stability, this unit is the one to get.
Be aware that this mount will ONLY work with the Captivate - the other Galaxy S phones will not fit. AND Samsung mounts for the other Galaxy S phones will not work with the Captivate because of the case shape differences and the differing positions of the usb connector.
Hope this helps those looking for a vehicle mount for their Captivate.

Hmmm...
I guess the question is... Where does it do the GPS calculations at- the software that runs on top of the OS or the driver that runs below it? I don't know enough about it to know for sure- but if we knew it should help narrow it down.

I assume you're reading that from the included instructions. If so, that would make two places (home dock) where Samsung has mentioned in writing their intent to provide the update of Froyo to Captivate owners. They need to get it out already.

Well from all of the videos that I have seen of it. It truly looks like a worth while side purchase. It charges your phone and auto launches the map. Thats enough for me to be sold.
I picked the car dock up when I got my phone this morning. It's really nice. As soon as it docks it comes up with a custom driver's view. You can add apps and contacts which is sweet. Nav works great and the voice control worked really well. I tapped it and told it to send a text with the content and it was flawless. I only had to press a large send button. I'm gonna like it.
Oh, I'm sure everyone probably knows but it does have power and will charge your phone while docked.
well those geniuses at AT&T said this doesn't exist when i picked up my phone this morning. I guess i'll be trying another store until i can get ahold of one. They only had the laptop and webtop docks there.
Didn't pay attn to it when asked if I wanted it at check out. Should have checked it out. But if no bootloAder in 30 days. This is going back anyway

I really like this car mount. It has integrated audio out that works perfectly with my Aux connection. I just wish I could adjust the volume before the sound hits my car audio system. I've already turned up the media volume on the phone itself, but I still need to crank up the volume on the car audio and it causes hissing sounds when I accelerate.

Did you try it with the insert that comes with it? The phone without a case is held in very firmly so a feather case should make it a tighter fit. Without the insert you can use a regular case.

yeah i tried without the insert. on the feather case, the usb plugs in on the bottom, but the top clip part doesnt extend far enough out to grip the edge anymore.
with the speck case which i also tried, it was too thick to even allow the USB to fit.
I bought the dock in-store today, and I must say it is very nice. There is an insert to use or not use depending on if you have a case on your phone, which is a great idea. The phone fits easily, and the car app loads extremely quick. It is wonderful you can move around the quick load apps, and the extra cables that plugin to your stereo if needed was a nice bonus. I already added shortcuts for Google nav, and will add other useful car apps as well. It is a worthy purchase if you like having a GPS with you or a dock while you play music in your car.
Can someone help me verify that the cam corder can be activated while in car dock and that the dock does not block the view?
Would love to be able to use the phone as a car camcorder on tracks or canyons Hack, we might be able to do something like the contour gps

I don't have to do anything special to get the car app to pop up right? Because when I plug mine in, it does nothing. The audio doesn't even go through the cable.

I like to use an OtterBox on my devices.
Is there any chance the Car Dock will work with an OtterBox?
If not, are these any cases that will work with the car dock?
Same question for the MultiMedia dock, but I will ask in another thread too.

You have to apply power to the USB port for it to start. Once you apply power, you can remove it and the phone will stay in dock mode till you pull it out.
EDIT: Which is awesome cause motorola didn't give you a DC/USB converter. I had one already that I used.
lol no. otterbox is way to big to use with any dock. the only case i know that works with the car dock is the body glove. the feather might work too but its too thin to be considered a case(might as well get an invisashield.
Thought I'll let ya'll know.
EDIT: Review.
Ok, I bought this from the store. I thought I'll wait to see if there was a better one, but I was unconvinced, not to mention some of them looked this, atleast from the suggestions of one of the store reps.
The mount costs 30 dollars outright from the store. If you buy two accessories, they take 20percent off both, three or more accessories and the discount becomes 25percent.
The box comes with: a cradle, window (suction) mount, a circular sticky pad (to mount the unit over the dash), and an alcohol wipe. It sucks that this does not come with the usb car charger, which apparently was a separate purchase for me ($5 dollars on amazon instead of $30 at the store).
So far I like it. Unlike other reviews, I have found it fairly easy to mount it, even with only one hand. And once you snap the lock on the top, it stays there. Once mounted, it automatically launches the car panel app, whether the dock itself is plugged in to a power source or not.
Although its sturdy, sometimes it shakes when you hit a bump on the road. Plus, adjusting the mount itself requires two hands though, and there are a couple of knobs that you can sort of tighten the adjustment into place. These are the only two quirks that I have with this.
Overall, I like it. As someone who uses the phone navigation quite a lot, it helps to have your phone mounted instead of fumbling around while driving, which is a definite no-no.

My family has 3 of these mounts. The first two had the two "teeth" in the usb connector, which made it harder to pull the TB out. But the last one was bought more recently and it's missing the teeth. I think VZW heard people's complaints and redesigned it. On that mount, the TB comes off easily.
Awesome - thanks for taking the time to post pictures and a write review!
I use my phone for navigation a lot and have been holding off on getting the car mount because of poor reviews. But this definitely looks a lot better than keeping it on my lap

I just leave the phone angled at like 30* upwards so that all of the weight isn't on the kickstand, but everything is still completely visible. I'm thinking of adding a small support as well though. (I have a spare console vent, so if I mess it up I can replace it easy enough).

Wouldn't any 3.5mm stereo cable work? I have a 2 foot cable I used to plug a cowon q5w to my car's unit. Sounded pretty nice, and I am thinking of using it for this phone in the car cradle.
Just to add to the OP's review, my recent purchase of this cradle also shows no issue with being too tight. I was disappointed it came without a power cable, though I already had one from amazon for $5 anyway. And finally, my Thunderbolt gets SUPER hot while plugged into this cradle. Almost too hot to handle.

I just today put the sticky pad below the ac vents closer to the shift stick an mounted my dock there, and so far it hasnt shown any heat issues. Previously it did, but I had it on my windshield during the day, when the sunlight was basically at the phone during the time it was there.
My .02 on the car mount....
1) Phone does get hot I noticed too. I pointed one of my dash vents directly up toward the phone, doesn't overheat, but wondering what will happen in winter when cool air isn't blowing on it...
2) Phone does tend to jiggle a little bit more than on previous car mounts I have owned. Not enough to bother me, but it's been mentioned as a complaint by others, and it does happen.
3) The stock music player does crazy things when in the car mount. I solved this by downloading the Android Music app from the market, no more issues, and free.
4) Not a huge fan of the stock Car Dock mode, as it doesn't have a link to music or voice search. I fixed this by downloading Google Car Home from the market. Free, and customizable to any app you want to use.
5) Any 3.5mm cable will work with this mount, however, the one I already owned was too big to clip into the back of the mount (has 1 clip for a charger, 1 for 3.5mm cable). Getting a standard sized one worked great however, hangs next to car dock for easy access once phone is in position.
Finally, I spoke to an HTC rep about the car dock a couple of weeks ago. He told me that the mount currently for sale is NOT manufactured by HTC, but that one from HTC was coming out soon (no idea to timeframe).
Hope this helps!

Anyone figure out a way to use this with the extended battery? Getting it in & out is a pain.
I just picked this up. I really like me. I am rooted and using BAMF 1.6 remix with the Google Car.
So upon researching dock options, I see that the official dock is in the works, with a MSRP US of 50 dollars:

Has anyone come across any viable third party alternatives? I'm so ready to use this with my PS3 controller to get my gaming on.
Edit: Well, looks like I missed a digit on the date. Ignoring my ignorance, let's talk docks! I'm very interested in 3rd party options or the viability of the old one functioning with the 2013 refresh.

Also I think the new Nexus 7 doesn't have Pogo-pins? I don't have mine around me to confirm.
That's the old Nexus 7 dock
The date on that article is for July 31st, but back in 2012. It must be referring to the old Nexus 7.. the clue was the mention of a 3-pin connector on the side.
Right, so edited the OP to accommodate my terrible ability to read dates.
It looks like there are barely any options currently for a dock of sorts.
There is the incipio stand here:
http://www.shopandroid.com/incipio-fixie-universal-tablet-stand/6A39A12239.htm
There are a couple of Qi charging stands as well:
http://www.androidpolice.com/tags/qi-charging-stand/
http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/qi-wireless-charging-pad-and-stand-p38173.htm
But again, this doesn't allow data transfer. It would be nice to place the N7 in a dock that is constantly connected to my desktop or by my bed for an alarm function.
The QI charging stand will take care of the second need, but data transfer would be nice as well. I'm very surprised we don't have docking pins.
I'm assuming being able to charge the device isn't a necessity, since you linked to the Incipio stand. I actually bought a black plastic stand at my local TJMaxx(or Ross, or Marshalls. One of those, lol) for only $4.99 or $5.99. I bought it for my Asus Infinity (10.1" tablet), and it works great in both landscape and portrait! Since getting my '13 N7 a few days ago, I've put it in the dock in both landscape and portrait as well. It also works great in either position! I've had my Note 2 in it, and even my Evo LTE before . Though, some of the display is blocked when either my Note 2 or Evo LTE is in this dock/stand. Just stating how versatile it is by being able to hold my 10.1" tablet, 7" tablet, 5.5" phone, and even 4.7" phone, all with perfect stability! If interested, you might want to check online for something similar. Knowing how well it works and how discreet it really is, I wish I would have bought at least 3 of these when the store had them in stock!
I'm gonna put some pics of the stand in the following post. Also pics of my Infinity an '13 N7 in both portrait and landscape position.

Microcenter has those for $6.99.
Another cheap option would be small photo easels. Foldable and prop your tablet up for useability anywhere in the house. They are often available at the dollar stores, so you really can't beat the price.
Microcenter has a nice-looking metal stand that raises the tablet if you want to use it as a secondary monitor.
None of these are docks, of course, but the design of the Cygnett stand would keep the charging cord out of the way.

Right, so edited the OP to accommodate my terrible ability to read dates.
It looks like there are barely any options currently for a dock of sorts.
There is the incipio stand here:

There are a couple of Qi charging stands as well:

http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/qi-wireless-charging-pad-and-stand-p38173.htm
But again, this doesn't allow data transfer. It would be nice to place the N7 in a dock that is constantly connected to my desktop or by my bed for an alarm function.
The QI charging stand will take care of the second need, but data transfer would be nice as well. I'm very surprised we don't have docking pins.

I wonder if there will be an Official dock that lets you:
1. Charge
2. Expand TV HDMI out
3. USB port for Hard drive access
I really want the Nexus & FHD to be a Home entertainment player...may be a remote/ Or Kinect like gesture control app built in with the dock
Hope this comes true...it will be the best Combo for a home unit!

That looks decent. Does it have any weight in the base? The problem I have with plastic stands is they are too light and move easy.

It is pretty lightweight! It's hollow inside though, so you could easily add some weight to it! It hasn't been an issue for me in the few months that I've had it. My Asus Infinity is a pretty big device, but this stand handles that tablet just fine. Here's a picture of the bottom of the stand showing that it's hollow, but still has plenty of unused space inside of it to add your own weights to it if you wanted.

I completely agree with you with an official Asus/N7 dock!! Charger is a must (obviously), an HDMI port would be great, at least 1 USB port, and a 3.5 auxiliary jack for audio!! If they would release an official dock with all of these features, then I would not think twice about buying it(assuming it's less than $100, should be around $50)!!!! Even without the HDMI port, as long as the other 3 are included then I would buy it! ChromeCast is going to be a pretty common household item for all Android users, especially given the low price point! That said, an HDMI port isn't a feature that I would choose over an auxiliary audio jack! Sure I could just stream music to my home theater system using ChromeCast, but I also have smaller speaker systems that I'd like to be able to use without connecting via bluetooth(Jawbone Big Jambox for example), and they won't be nearly as loud as my home theater for when I'm not trying to have everyone in the house listen to the same thing as I am!!
Also, my Asus Infinity has a mini HDMI port built in to the side of the tablet. I mainly use it for gaming anyway, but especially when I'm wanting to play on my flat screen TV!! Just so easy with the Sixaxis app, a PS3 controller, an having the HDMI port right on the tablet! I have an HDMI - mini HDMI cable hooked to my TV at all times. Basically, I said all of that just to say that this is probably the main reason that an HDMI port on the official dock isn't really that important to me, and why I'd prefer the 3.5mm jack over the HDMI port. That's IF I couldn't have both anyway!

just found this one. I haven't ordered yet, but I'm tempted. Looks like a legit charging dock for the 2013 N7.
thoughts?
Don't know if it's out yet but here's the official charging dock

Freaking pricey for a wireless charger though!! QI chargers can be found around $30 pretty easily now. The dock you linked should have at LEAST a 3.5mm port on the back if nothing else for them to have thy audacity to charge that much for it!!! Geez!!!

have you seen the Tylt Vu? thats $100.
But this really isnt that pricy imo...I'd much rather pay $50 to have an elegant dock / stand that will charge in portrait AND landscape than buy a $30 pad that you have to lay the tablet down on and thus lose the functionality of it. Plus it wont slide off on this.
Putting a nice dock with a qi charger warrants another $20 to me.

It looks like it uses the USB port for charging. My experience has not been good doing this.
