[Q] Problem Mounting and Formatting SD Card - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

After I format my Samsung Extreme Speed Class 10 16GB Micro SDHC card in Android, it will mount in Clockworkmod Recovery 5.8.0.2, but won't show in Windows. Then formatting it using MiniTools Partition Wizard makes it visible to Windows but it then won't mount in recovery and Android says it's damaged!
After formatting it in Gparted neither will recognize it. Could someone help please?
I'm using ICS for HTC Desire 0.5.1, default HBoot, Clockworkmod Recovery Touch 5.8.0.2, aGPS and default homescreen with no scripts.
Thanks.

We have same problem before and i do this steps to solved it...
1. Format sd on windows (fat32)
2. Reformat again using CWM or 4EXT, format sd card then;
2.a. partition sd card
2.b. remove all partition and start from the scratch
2.c. 1st-ext partition 1024
2nd skip
swap skip
select 4ext
(done)
3. Reboot
I hope this will help you!

Thanks it's working now!
So annoying that this is necessary, is there a reason?

Yeah I needed to do it again and now it won't work. Tried it twice; must've been a fluke.
Can somebody please help, the problems with this are getting ridiculous.

[Q] Just bricked 2x SD cards partitioning. Do I need a class 6 one?

When trying to create an ext4 partition on the stock 8Gb SD card that I got with my Desire, I ended up 'bricking' it so now it's damaged and is no use any more.
I had a spare 4Gb one lying about (same make) and tried again, but suffered the same problem. Now that card is read only and I can't format it any more. Android just won't let me, and of course my PC doesn't see it as it's read only so again, 'bricked'.
Suffice to say now i'm furious as i've wasted 2 cards. I wasn't aware of different classes of SD cards before today but i'm guessing my problem stems from the fact that I was trying to add an ext4 partitions to class 2 cards? I wish the guides re partitioning would say that you need a better class of card to create ext3/ext4. (I was in the past able to make an ext2 ok on the first one)
Do I need to get a class 6 card to be able to use ext4?
I don't think class and partition compatibility have anything to do with each other, the class is just a indication of the minimum write speed. Also i had no problem getting a ext3 partition on a class 2 sd card.
What program are you using to partition the cards?
Yeah? I had read that somewhere. I'm using Gparted Live CD.
I can't think why both cards failed the same way then.

I used Gparted for my SD the other day and mysteriously, 4GB went missing. Luckily, Android reformatted it for me and I got my 4GB back

This is an old program. It doesn't appear to work under W7.
Not sure it would be any help anyway as Android doesn't even give me the choice to make the damaged cards visible to a PC.
Did you try to mount them in recovery or just under android?
If only in android while booted, go in to recovery and mount it that way.

I don't seem to have an option to mount an SD card in recovery mode.
The only options I have are:
Reboot system now
Apply sdcard:update.zip (which doesn't work as the SD card is damaged so there is no update.zip accessible)
Wipe data/factory reset
Wipe cache partition
I think I did when I could use the update.zip but as I say, that's now not an option.
Any ideas?
Always be careful with ext4, it's known to kill the sd card's lifespan (so I've read from others, I've never tried it myself). I always use ext3 and it works fine.
P.S. Formatted with Rom Manager :/
ext4 will kill your card in 10 years maybe, so get that out of the equation.
boot a linux live cd if you dont have it installed (i.e. ubuntu)
open a terminal and then:
$sudo su (it will ask for your user password if you have one)
#dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdX
but you have to replace that X by your phone's sd device it will probably be something like sdb or sdc, dont indicate the partition which would look like sdb1 or sdc1
once done, you hace to partition it again:
#cfdisk /dev/sdX
and then format those partition, like:
#mkfs -t ext4 /dev/sdX2 (now you have to indicate the partition)
good luck, and dont **** up your system.

What about your card reader? Maybe it is not the cards? I did my partitions using Ubuntu Live CD. My MicroSD card is a Sandisk 2GB card without any class specified.
Keep your cards and keep trying to format them after 2-3 days. Formatting in FAT32+BTRFS bricked two of mine a few weeks back but they were fine after a week and started getting recognized by then - not before though.
And yep, not to do with Class rating; I run Ext4 with a Class 2 and 4.

A corrupted filesystem or partition is very different to a corrupted card. You most likely have the former, not the latter.
Which Recovery and version are you using?
All Recoveries for a while allow you to mount the card via USB. The option is under "mounts and storage" in CWM Recovery, like: http://www.brutzelstube.de/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/ClockworkModRecovery.jpg
Format when it is mounted through this option via your PC.

I don't have a card reader and it's cheaper to buy a new card than buy a card reader to maybe fix them.
I previously had an ext2 partition which I done via Clockwork recovery. However, when I tried to format the card and repartition it with an ext4 partition using Gparted Live CD I broke both the cards. At first they were just being reported as read only by Android but as I tried to fix them they became damaged so now I can't mount them.
I think the problem stems from me formatting while the cards were mounted, as mentioned earlier. My mistake there. I should have formatted them under Gparted.
Now they are damaged Gparted no longer sees them and while Windows disk management did see them for a while (when Android was reporting them as read only) now I can't see them I can't do anything to them.

Before I damaged it it was visible in Windows disk management, but there were no partition(s) and no ability to format. The disk was just grey, like the DVD drive..

I used to go to 'Apply sdcard:update.zip' to get into Clockwork Recovery but as I say, this is no longer an option, as the SD card has been formatted and now damaged.

Interesting. I'll maybe try that at some point but I have a new card on the way so i'll be making sure I format and partition it in Gparted and not make the mistake of formatting while mounted in Android.

[Q] Help!!!

I was getting ready to install a new rom and using CWR performed a wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache partition, wipe dalvik cache and a format system. I accidentally went into partition SD card and instead of hitting the back button hit the go. Now my phone only goes to first white screen "HTC Incredible" and stays stuck on that screen. I am able to boot into bootloader and recovery but cant recover any backups "no files found". Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Partitioning the SD card formats it, do you keep backups of your SD card on your computer hopefully?

Can you hook up your SD card to a computer to verify that it's erased? You may need to reformat it to FAT32.

Don't have a micro sd card reader but will get one to see whats going on.
Im interested to know how partitioning the sdcard would make the phone get stuck at the htc splash? I have partitioned my sd several times before, it does format the sd but has never made it so i cant boot the phone.
EDIT: Alao you cant remove a ext partition by just formating in windows, as windows only sees the fat32 partition. To remove it go back to recovery and the partition sd. When you select it it should ask you 2 things, ext size and swap size.
Use the trackball to set both ext and swap to 0, leaving the whole sd to be formated fat32. After you do that see if you can boot.
I have done this too but good thing I had another SD card with a Rom on it or other wise I would have been screwed

Not sure why its getting stuck on splash screen. It was my first time partitioning my sd card. I tried installing a zip from sd card and none found. I also tried to nandroid restore and no file found. I will try to remove the partition and see if that works.

I set the partition to 0 and still no boot
Sounds like your only option is to redo a wipe data/factory reset, format boot, and format system again, to be safe, then copy a new ROM zip to your SD card and flash that.
Your nandroids, and everything on your SD card, are gone.

there is a clockwork folder on your sd card that is used if you updated clockworkmod recovery from rom manager. i mad the mistake of deleting it once. i had a backup on my pc before i did it. if you can get the phone to boot then just click the first option in rom manager and it will re build the file.
You don't need an SD card reader if you can get to CWM. Just go to mounts and mount Your SD card with your USB cable attached to your PC.

Partition questions and sd specs.

Please direct me to an idiots guide to SD partitioning...
I have been flashing my desire since the summer. And well i forgot how i initially setup my SD card.
I wanted to treat my self to a new CLASS 10 SD card. But when it came to partitioning the card i got lost.
Is it as simple as using clockworkmod to set partition size to 1-2Gigs? and swap to 0?
With reference to Ext2,ext3 and ext4 are these all multiple partitions? None of these where options within clockwork or rom manager
Anyway i did my partitions using clockwork and installed a new rom i had never used before runnymede. I found performance extremely sluggish and slow. Of course i did 3 new things at once. new card, new partition and new rom... could be one or all these causing me headaches..
Sorry to ramble on. Bottom line:
- Could i be kindly directed to a SD partitioning guide?
- Is the Desire compatible with 2,4, and 10?

[Video Tutorial] Noob Proof Everything Desire Guide UPDATED [04/04/11][Video Tut]
hope it helps.
The class 10 SD card should be OK with your desire.
The people in the know mostly recommend not using ROM Manager to partition SD cards. I would suggest try using GParted.
In terms of ext2, 3, 4 - I would recommend ext 3 for your SD card partition - it is safer than ext 2 partitions.
I would suggest an ext 3 partition size of 1024mb or even 2048mb (that should cover you for most present roms and most future roms).
I am not as knowledgeable as some of the other guys here but I will give you an useful link:
http://www.techcredo.com/android/tu...-for-a2sd-with-gparted-on-a-windows-pc-ext234
I usually create a bootable GParted USB drive and use to partition my SD cards.
I hope that helps,
KKH
I have been trying to create an ext4 partition using GParted. I did all necessary steps - will quickly run thru, just so you know:
1. Burnt ISO and accessed thru boot menu (running XP/SP3, btw)
2. Deleted existing allocation.
3. Created new primary partition as FAT32
4. Allocated "free space following" as 1024
5. Specified the unallocated memory (1024) as ext4.
There was no error in the operation.
However... When I tried to load stuff to the SD card, Windows prompted me to format the card before using. It made no sense but I couldn't do anything. And by formatting it, I lost everything that GPL had done in the first place.
I went over the process again, to no avail.
Does anyone know where I've possibly gone wrong? Please help.
Which recovery are you using?
I had the same issue, vista kept asking me to format SD card before use.
I fixed this by making my first partition in GParted the fat32 and the second partition ext3.
I think windows accesses the first partition by default and is happy with fat32.
If your ext4 was the first partition, windows would ask to format that ext4 in to fat32 before use.
I hope that helps.
thanks i should be good to go now..

If you install 4EXT Recovery, you won't ever need a bootable disk to partition your SD card. You'll be able to do it straight from recovery I suggest you to give it a try!
My recovery is 4ext and I used this recovery to make partitions of my class10 sd card.
I also use this recovery to align my partitions.
You can also use the freeware "minitool partition wizard" under win xp instead of gparted.
Good luck.

If the OP uses this tool, he needs more than good luck. It's like rootSU says in his sig: "Don't be lazy and make GParted your first choice...". So please do not trust in windows software which wants to handle linux partitions.
Use rom manager. Simple as that

[Q] Troubles with sd-ext / sd card mounting

Hey @ all,
ive got a HTC Desire with these specs:
ClockworkMod Recovery v5.0.2.0
HBOOT 6.93.1002
Radio 5.11.05.27
rooted, s-off
I tried ICS Beta with an ext4 partition for about 2-3 months, the performance was too slow, so i decided to get a faster GB-Rom. I did a full wipe and formatted my sd-card with Panasonic SD Formatter (Full Erase).
Then i tried to create a new ext4 partition with Mini Partition Tool Wizard.... (1. Move/Resize, 2. 2048MB of unallocated space - so i got a fat32 partition with 6GB and the 2nd unallocated partition will be turned into a EXT4 Primary Drive with 4kb Clusters) 3. Mini Partition Tool tells me that everything is done and without failure.
Then i boot in my Recovery and go to (mounts and storage/mount usb storage) win7 tells me that a new drive was found with 6GB (8GB SD Card - 2GB ext4). I copy my choise of ROM on it (in my example RSK bravo 7.4.3) - everything works.
Then i unmount USB storage and go to install zip from sdcard/choose zip from sdcard) and then a failure appears: Can´t mount /sdcard/
If i format the SDcard once again (without ext4) it works, i can install .zip´s and i can mount the sd-card.
Im really mad, cause i tried this 100times without success. Also tried a other card, same thing.
Could this be an sd-brick? (But everything works fine without ext4). Is it a problem of partitioning? Or can i solve this problem with another software or what would you try?
Sorry for my bad english
Please help me
Oh and maybe it helps to discover the issues... when i power on my desire it starts the revolutionary boot loader, without pressing the VOL- button...
Anyone got a idea what i could try? Im so
hello friend , this problem was also occur with me
Solution: run gparted and remove all partitons and create new fat32 partition then apply, your problem solved

Thx for your awnser but it also works without gparted (but just with a fat32 partition, without ext4). Have you created ext4 also with gparted and it worked?
I solved it
Tryed to format and partition with the sd card in my girlfriends unrooted desire z.
1st the desire z cant read the sd card and i thought it wouldn´t work again, but after formatting, partitioning i inserted the sdcard again in my desire - and then i go to install from sd-card, and see there: i could choose the rom
Maybe the unmounted usb from recovery was the reason, i dont know but im really happy that it worked

[Q] Can no longer mount sd card after formatting sd card with EaseUs Partition Master

Hi everyone,
After my HTC Desire (GSM) went out of warranty after 2 years, i thought is was time to root the thing and get rid of my memory problems.
Here is what I did:
I decided to use following XDA guide: Noob Proof Everything Desire Guide UPDATED [04/04/11] , as Revolutionary is still in Beta.
- Rooting went OK (Unrevoked 3.21, not 3.32)
- S-Off with AlphaRev 1.8 went OK
- Partitioning with Gparted: Gparted kept looking for my SD card, but no luck . So I decided to use Easus Partition Master (on Windows XP) to Format the card. My PC could mount the SD card, so i backed up the content to my hard drive. Next I formatted to FAT32 with success. It did seem to add a small other partition that I could not delete (??). I booted to Gparted again, but it still could find the sd card.
The next day I wanted to look at my SD card, but my PC could no longer see it. The option 'USB Diskdrive' has disappeared . Cannot see SD card with ES Explorer on my Desire as well. When I try to format using the Recovery, I get: 'E: Cant mount dev/block/mmcblk0p1 ......'
I ran the fastboot commands as described in the [Troubleshooting] thread successfully, but that did not help.
What should i try next? Can somebody point me in the right direction? Should i try mounting and reformatting with my brother's Xperia U?
Some Info:
HTC Desire GSM (before rooting: Froyo 2.2.2 and Hboot 0.93.0001)
Bravo PVT1 SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT 0.93.0001
CWM - Alpharev Recovery 2.5.1.8
Any help appreciated, thanks.
Does recovery find the sd-card?
That's what you get for not following instructions. Best partitions are made my 4ext recovery or gparted.

I cannot perform operations such as backup/mount/format sd card from the AlphaRev recovery menu if that's what you're saying.
I only used Easus because the Gparted could not find the sd card in the first place, so i figured I do a generic FAT32 format with the Partition Master and then give the Gparted another spin.... Still wonder why Gparted could not find the sd card and why the Partition Master added that small extra partition (Errors on sd card?).
Alright. So my best guess is that the EaseUS Partition Master screwed up my micro sd card's format ('Protected Area'?), which is why the phone can no longer read it.
So I think my best option is to either:
- get a hold of a micro sd to sd adapter, plug it in my pc and use SD Formatter 3.1 to format it to FAT32 properly, or
- buy new SD card altogether
and then try Gparted again.
Comments welcome...
