[Q] Bricked Evo hboot 2.10 - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a bricked evo 4g that currently only boots to bootloader, The evo says " s-off ".......I have tried flashing RA recovery thats fails, Also tried running official Sprint 2.3.3 ruu, that also fails with usb error 17. I posted some screen shoots of the bootloader and what error i get after trying to flash custom reovery.. does anyone know of a fix... any help is always much appreciated thanks!

Hey,
well I can give you the new that your phone isnt bricked if it was it would not turn on and would pretty much be a "brick" hence the name. I am not good with this but captain throwback is the man on fixing borked devices. so you might want to look to some higher ups in the forum and ask for help!

Rather than running an RUU from the computer, have you tried flashing a PC36IMG.zip through HBOOT? Try this one - it's the 4.54 Gingerbread stock ROM. If that flashes successfully (you might have to do it twice), then you can try flashing a custom recovery again.
Do you happen to know what hardware version you have? I notice you appear to have flashed my 0.76 ENG HBOOT modded to read 2.10 - if you did that on a newer hardware model, that would be bad. The block sizes on the newer hardware models are different than on the older versions, so you really can't use an HBOOT version prior to 2.10 on them (the one you have is actually 0.76).

Yeah I think the hardware version was 003 or 004, yeah even when i use the Pc36img in your post 1. Radio_v2 ok then 2-8 Fail-PU.

Kinda the same situation, but I think easier to fix
Ok hi. So here's the deal:
My EVO can boot into bootloader, and it can get into recovery. Cool right? NO!!!
here's where the problem starts: I installed a corrupted ROMand of course, like every ROM, I wiped everything before flashing that one, and ended up not having a system to fall back on... And now the only thing I can do is get into the Bootloader and recovery.
The following issues I'm having, and the thins I have tried are:
1. I have tried putting the PC36IMG.ZIP at the root of the sd card.
- That didnt work though, and I figured that would only make sense, due to the fact that in recovery, it says "E: cant mount sd card"... So why/how would it work in bootloader?
2. It says "wrong image" when it tries to update the IMG file
3. I'm not a complete noob, I am willing to try ADB, I just dont know the commands to use :-( and IDK what to "push" or, even how to get the computer (PC, NOT a mac) to recognize the phone since it's... well, borked, I guess.
4. I' guessing that's the ONLY way to truly fix the phone and flash another ROM... is from the PC? But if so, HOW? Please help me.

I had the same thong happen to me when I first unlocked my phone all you have to do is get a computer with a card reader and put that PCI36.img
On the root of your SD card and put it back in the phone and boot into the bootloader... And if the card still cannot mount then keep pulling it and turning the phone on and let it come on in bootloader everytime and adventully the bootloader will reconigze the SD card and install the recover.. this method has worked for me a fee times
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA

Other option is sometimes I do a factory reset and reboot my phone and the very first ROM I ever flashed reinstalls... Without going into the bootloader ofcourse
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA

Oh wait I just read that you said you CAN get into recovery.. well there is a option to mount SD card.. do that and then restart

Thanks man, but here's th thing, it KEEPS saying "E: cant mount sd card" and "No such directory found". thats my proble that I am having. If only I can get the phone to pick up the sd card, my situation would be handled.

I followed those directions and now I'm not stuck in hboot/fastboot every time it starts. It says 1.00 radio so I assume everything worked up until that point. When I run bootloader it tells me "No Images" and "No image or wrong image!" PB31IMG.zip
I'm thinking maybe I got a filename wrong?
My sd card is formatted fat32.
Should I re-update? I assume this is the factory reset where it won't try to re-flash the radio again and brick me but I'm not risking anything until I can find someone with more experience. Right now I just want to get out of this boot loop.

Download another copy of the 2.1 pb31img.zip or extract out of the ruu, makes sure card is fat32 and try again.

I got it working on my 2nd install attempt, so the process is good. I was then able to root and install Virtuous. Things are so much faster without all that crap running.

You could hold off for the new unrevoked3 release... this was just posted on their twitter account:
First successful run of unrevoked 3.2 tonight: took a stock S-ON Froyo EVO to S-OFF in one pass, less than 1 minute. 3.2 is nearly complete.

[Q]Working ROM/HBOOT/Radios... but borked Recovery.

So, after messing around with my "new" replacement EVO and getting it rooted (successfully with HBOOT 2.1, 2.6.32.15 Kernel, ROM back to stock Sprint 3.29.651.5, baseband 2.15.00.09.01), I decided to try and put Warm's ROM back on it. That was all fine and dandy until I rebooted with the ROM on my SD and went into recovery... to get the little Angry Red Triangle of Death. Even though it's showing as SOFF, when I ADB in (via FASTBOOT), it won't let me push anything and acts like it's not rooted; TB/WH/etc... aren't working either.
That being said... how do you go about flashing a new recovery when HBOOT won't properly read the PC36IMG.zip file? It reads it and does its little break out thing for the individual components, but then never gives me an option to flash it. Obviously, I can't flash any IMGs via ADB because the phone thinks that it's not rooted... am I semi-screwed? I can probably find a way to brick it and take it back to Sprint for another one, but I'd rather fix it myself than take the dishonest path.
Any help is much appreciated in advance. Let me know if I can answer any other questions that need answering. Radios are also the latest, IINM, and if it even matters.
*edit* Also, I was stuck in a boot lock at the white HTC screen previously, which I fixed by running an older Sprint RUU while it was connected via fastboot. Did that potentially make things worse?
What hardware version do you have? I am guessing since you have 2.1 h boot, that, you may have 004 hardware. Also I'm not sure what root method you used, but I would try and re-root using unrevoked then see how it affects your recovery.
I have no idea if this would work, but try flashing a recovery through rom manager. However, is your bootloader borked?

Nope, bootloader seems to be fine. I can get into it and it reads the PC36IMG files but just doesn't want to load them up and/or try to install them. Everything else in the regular bootloader menu works too, past recovery.
Hardware version is indeed 0004. Does that make any difference? I couldn't find anything in the FAQs about whether or not hardware version makes a difference with the newest ROMs.

The first thing, you are not rooted,in hboot you will see S-Off if you are rooted, the other thing is,you need a SD card. When you get the SD card, insert it and follow these directions....
1: Download and install HTC drivers HTC drivers
2: Download the rooting tool/program revolutionary Revolutionary, downloads are at the bottom of the page. You will need to enter in your Evo's serial number (under the battery) and be sure to save the beta key. You'll need it later..(best thing to do is copy and paste the beta key into command box).
3: Enable USB debugging (settings>applications>development>turn on USB debugging) and connect the evo to your PC as charge only
4: Un-zip the S-OFF tool and run the program, making sure to install the custom recovery when prompted. (unless you already know what you're doing and want to put Amon_Ra or TWRP recovery on there)You will need a recovery, here is Amon RA Style
5: Download SuperUser and boot into recovery. To enter recovery: power off completely, yes battery pull while off too be sure, then hold volume down+power and from there go to recovery and confirm.
6: install superuser from recovery (you must put the Superuser zip on the SD card first, before booting into recovery. Or mount your SD card while in recovery to take it too your Evo. OR, download it too your phone before booting into recovery )
YOU ARE NOW ROOTED.
7: (optional but highly recommended) Make a nandroid backup via recovery and then put it on the PC just to be sure nothing will happen too it.
This is not my tool,i'm just posting this for you.You will need a rom to install, you can get them here .
He's on Hboot 097. He can root with unrEVOked, I'm pretty sure
Which is better revolutionary or unrevoked? Which is easier?
Also will this fix my issue. I dont care if im rooted or not. Sure it would be nice. But my main worry is fixing this issue first. Than rooting. But if I can "kill two birds with one stone" than even better.

First off, you're going to need an SD card. Onto that SD Card, download this file: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/9362091/PC3...15.00.11.19_NV_1.90_release_161482_signed.zip
Rename the file to just PC36IMG.zip, and put it on the root of the SD Card. Put the SD Card into the device, and boot into HBOOT. It should recognize the file, take a while to load it, and then ask if you want to update. Choose "yes" by pressing the Volume up button. This part will take a while - it'll reboot into bootloader once during the update process, so don't be alarmed by that, and by all means, don't touch it while it's updating. Once it's done, it'll ask you if you want to reboot. Choose yes, and then we'll see if it'll boot up. If it does, then you can proceed to root it using unrevoked3. If it doesn't, then you got a raw deal and you should get your money back (I hope you used PayPal!).

Sounds like someone sold you a semi-bricked phone. Does it still get stuck when you try booting it up? If it can't update the radio partition, then that means it's corrupt, and the phone is unusable.
it wasnt unrevoked its the pc36img that gave that error. everything else was ok.

A PC36IMG.zip is just a ROM file set up to flash in the bootloader. If that won't completely flash (especially if the radio update is failing), you might be stuck. I can give you a newer one to try, but then you'll have to use a different rooting method, if you get it to successfully update.
I don't see why it would work, though.
ill try another img file. what other way to root? isnt the way where you gotta save serial number or what not the easiest way!?

Some1 sold you a phone that was bricked. The radio update is failing cuz that's how it got bricked in the first place...bad radio updates. That is the most common way bricks happen. Get your money back asap. End of story.

unrooted, S-ON, bad USB, how can I rescue it?

Hi! I bought this evo 4g from cl and it turned out to be flashed to cricket.
I want to flash it back to sprint so I can use it. I've read a lot and tried a lot but nothing helps. It looks like my problem is that:
1) it is now unrooted, so I don't have access to terminal so fastboot is not an option
2) it has a bad USB. I don't know if it is the hardware, or because of the previous flash
So my only chance is to load the PC36IMG to SD card and flash it from there. For some reason, whenever I do it, it loads it, checks it and goes back to bootload. This happens to all PC36IMGs I tried (maybe 6-7 of them) EXCEPT the following one:
PC36IMG_SuperSonic_S_Sprint_WWE_3.70.651.1_Radio_2.15.00.11.19_NV_1.90_release_161482_signed.zip
However, this one does not work either. After it checks it, it gives the error that "MAIN VERSION IS OLDER"
I searched and found the solution, but all required USB port which I don't have. So is there anyway I can still revive this?

It doesn't look as if you are rooted...security is on...you are on the most recent hboot so flashing a prior RUU won't work. I think you will need usb, or pull the sd card out and put it in a computer and put any files you need on them...not sure what steps you found for fixing it.
Yes, that's what I did. I put PC36IMG.zip onto SD card with my computer. But still if either never goes out of the loop or gives the "older" error.
Are you suggesting I should look into downgrading hboot? I think I saw something like that while I was looking through internet. I hope it does not require usb port. though. any suggestion will be helpful.

HBOOT 2.18 is the most recent hboot so you would need to unlock the bootloader to downgrade with RUU. See this thread, it doesn't look like you can without usb http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1542193
The error message I saw "main version" being newer. I thought it means the PC36IMG is older than what's on the phone. Am I wrong? Was it referring to the hboot? Could anybody explain to me?

It means you are running the most current version either 4.67 or the one that just came out. Both 4.67 and the newest have HBOOT 2.18 which to revert back to an older version such as 4.54 with HBoot 2.16 you would have to unlock the bootloader. You will not be able to install an older RUU without usb port. With the PC36IMG zip, also comes the HBOOT version that gets installed during the process so you will keep getting the error because your phone has the newest version on it.
So do I have both the software version and the hboot version being old before I can do anything, OR I can recover with one of them being old?
Also, do you think my usb port is really bad, or it's the software?
Thanks Man!

Does your computer recognize the phone? if so, then no...its not bad. If its not bad then this gets way easier for you to do. Captain Throwback has a guide that details how to gain s-off on 2.18 (Google unroot 2.18 mikmik). If you are not wanting to root, and just get back on sprint network...try this thread and see if this works http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=937652 as it is a guide to get back to sprint from being flashed to cricket. You may not need to be unrooted (didn't look). Hope this helps
Edit: of course if the usb port is bad...get it fixed!
The computer charges it, but does not recognize either with HTC Sync or as disk drive. It does not make the little noise when connected either. Is that typical for real bad port?
And how do I fix the port? does it require soldering etc, or just unscrew everything carefully and put in the replacement port? Thanks!

Sorry about the delay...it makes me wonder if it is a SD card issue. You might try clearing/formatting the SD card through phone settings
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
Not a problem. I appreciate your help.
I did format the SD card once. But at that time, I might not be using the correct PC36IMG. I'll try it again.
But I am totally new on this. Could you suggest the best sequence to try things? And which PC36IMG I should use? (I downloaded many of the ROMs on XDA and only one of them gave me the hope of working but failed because of main version older error). I realize I might be totally using the wrong zip file. Also, should I worry about doing anything like flashing the kernal etc? Most instructions involve USB port and not sure whether my case will need additional tweaks.
Just quick reminder:
No USB. Not rooted. My software version is 4.67... And HBoot 2.18. S-ON.
I'll report back once I try it. Thanks a lot!

do you have usb debugging enabled?
I'll try it again. Thanks for the suggestion.
Are you suggesting my computer not recognize the phone because usb debugging not on? Or is it needed for flashing with PC36IMG?
I tried it again and made sure the debugging is on, but the computer still does not recognize it. I haven't yet tried to flash it again.

[Q] Is there a PC36IMG for 5.07.651.1_Supersonic_Stock_Rooted_CPTB.zip

i thought I saw it somewhere that "Captain" was going to upload a PC36IMG for this specific version of ROM, but I now can't find it.
The reason I want to use it is because my phone currently has the 4.67 software and 2.18 HBoot. Every time I try to flash an older version, it gives me the "main version older" error. Plus, my phone's USB port is not working with diag mode on (although still charges). So PC36IMG seem to be my only chance. Please advise where to get it or if I am wrong with my understanding. Thanks!
are you trying to root you evo with hboot 2.18 ?
i am some what lost...forgive me if i am wrong about anything. do you need the pc36img for 4.67 and 3.18 hboot ?
Sorry. Not really.
PC36IMG_SuperSonic_S_Sprint_WWE_3.70.651.1_Radio_2 .15.00.11.19_NV_1.90_release_161482_signed.zip
However, this one does not work either. After it checks it, it gives the error that "MAIN VERSION IS OLDER"
I thought if I can find a newer version than what I have (4.67) I may have a chance. I found that the one in my title is newer. But it looks like it is not a PC36IMG.zip file (how do I tell BTW? It just failed on me).
I searched and found other solutions like downgrading, but all required USB port which I don't have. So is there anyway I can still revive this?
This is my info on top of phone.

well you need USB to be able to flash the phone, + you wont be able to do anything unless its rooted :/
But question:
1) I was wondering if the USB problem I am having is due to the earlier flash (I read about some ROMs leads to bad USB). If I install a stock ROM (newest) with my microUSB, I may have my USB back. Is that correct? Do you think it might work? It still charges, just not recognized data-wise.
2)Am I correct that I can copy the newer version of software (like the one in the title) as a PC36IMG.zip to my microSD card, and have the phone load into bootloader and recover that way?
Thanks!

Yes, roms can cause hardware issues, well not only roms, but kernels, and more. And for your second question I can't say no or yes, but give it a try

I see! Thanks! So are you aware of any PC36IMG for 5.07 software? And you mentioned 4.67 Hboot 2.18. Do you have a link? I don't think I tried it since I was looking for a "newer" version. But may be it will work? Thanks!
And, do you suggest install a different kernel, radio, etc? If so, which one should I try? I don't think I can make it worse.

i may have solved your problem....http://d-h.st/jrt
Sorry for being ignorant. I think I tried this one. It went back to bootloader after it "checking PC36IMG" without any real changes.
I thought it was due to it is a file I need to install from computer, rather than directly rename and put onto SD. That is why I was asking for a PC36IMG.zip file. I guess I am wrong?
Again, sorry for the ignorance. Never done these before. Just trying to save this brick I just bought. Thanks!
