[Q] I need a recovery!!! - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok so I came from an HTC Hero which I rooted with z4root and I had ClockworkMod Recovery. I have had my Xperia play for a few months now and I have been trying to find a way to root it. Well I finally did using this tool here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1487221. Well as soon as I got my root permission and I saw that I had superuser, I went straight to the market and downloaded Rom Manager. I tried to flash ClockworkMod Recovery from there but it says that R800x does not have an officially supported ClockworkMod Recovery yet. Well then I tried the flash alternate recovery part which is RA Recovery v.1.6.2. Well it acts like it is going to download then it gives me a message saying an error occurred while flashing your recovery. So my question is: Can someone please help me get a working recovery going on my phone?

The R800x has a locked bootloader so you can't use CWM in quite the same way. Look for the app calleo CWM in the market. It's for our phone and installs CWM in \system.
You won't be able to use custom kernels or OC unless you unlock the bootloader. However, there are a few ROMs you can try, and you can do a nandroid as well.
See the stickies in this section for more info and links,

Just tried, it works! Thank you!

This couldn't have come at a better time for me. I just installed CWM Auto-Installer and it (at least seems to for now) works great.

[Q] ClockworkMod Recovery Help!

Hi i am trying to install CWM Recovery for my galaxy w but can someone tell me the difference between installing CWM like this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1446593) and installing it by downloading ROM Manager from the market (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koushikdutta.rommanager&hl=en) and use the option Flash CWM Recovery as seen in the first app screenshot.
Head to Dev section there is a thread on ClockworkMod Recovery esp. made by arco68...use the Odin method.
Flashing via ROM Manager is not advisable yet....

Better not use the ROM Manager App method, unless somebody confirmed it is working.
I bricked my Galaxy Ace a year ago using that method when I didn't know better.
When you try to do it via the CWM application you get a list of supported devices.
You will not find the wonder in there, trying to use other device will probably end you up with a brick.
I have tried the recovery-clockwork-5.5.0.4-ancora.zip by using adb shell method. It works without any problem.

[Q] Boot loop! Can't get into recovery. What to do??

Hi,
I got my phone stuck on bootloop, and can't find a good idiot-proof guide on how to fix this without the ability to get into recovery.
Here's what happened:
Last night I figured I'd give it another shot trying to get a custom rom on my Arc. This didn't work because I couldn't get into recovery anymore (??)
So just now I figured I'd re-install CWM, so I ran the program, it didn't work.
So I ran it again; Didn't work.
Well, I ran it again, and the program said it worked; So i try to boot into recovery, and it's boootlooping ((
I don't know what happened here (it has to have something to do with the cwm installation program), and I don't really care at this point. I just hope there is someone here that's willing to write up how to get it working again.(in an idiot-proof guide )
Thanks in advance guys
I would just re install stock either by using pcc or seus, or flashtools which is the preferred method for most.
If using flashtools you can choose which stock rom to use look in the stickies for the need roms etc.

Install CWM on new AT&T S3

Why does this never work the way its supposed to for me??
Anyway, so I just got my S3 and I hate the stock ROM already so I want to go to CM (9 maybe, 10 if it works well). I'm right now just trying to get Clockwork recovery installed and working and seem to be failing miserably. At first it seemed to be going ok, I downloaded Odin 3.04 and a recovery TAR that was on the Android Authority guide for the AT&T S3. I ran the install no problems, and booted into recovery without issue. I then tried installing CM10 and it gave and Status 7 assert failure.
After a lot of digging I finally found some people saying that it was because of an incorrect version of CWM, so I dug around till I found a 6.0.1.0 tar that says its for my phone. I install that and now I can't get into recovery at all. It will still boot into the stock rom but that's it. I saw some suggestions saying that unchecking auto reboot, and f. reset time would fix this so I did that and still nothing. I can't get into recovery at all. Is there a definitive (as in this still works) guide out there somewhere??

Ok so I found some CWM tars that they they're v.6+ that I can get installed (at least I assume so since Odin says it worked) but when I get in there the version listed at the top is 5.5.0.4, should this number not match? I haven't even gotten around to trying to get it to install CM10 yet.
I used rom manager to flash its recovery. No problems what so ever.

By Rom Manager you are talking about the App you use from within the OS? So would I need root for this?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koushikdutta.rommanager
Installed ROM manager....opened it and click install recovery. Done. Yes, you have to be rooted to use that app.

SGS2 usb Jig on SGS3?

Im upgrading to an SGS3 from SGS2 and am curious whether the SGS2 usb jig will work on the SGS3 for resetting the flash counter?
Nope. You have to use triangle away. But if you utilize the no trip root method and install TWRP from goo manager you will never increment the flash counter.

I've only ever used 4EXT and CWM, am able to install CWM from TWRP recovery? This phone seems to use a different recovery method than I've used. I take it it's not incorporated into the Kernel like SGS2 where I can just flash a kernel with CWM.
I just saw the "Stupid Question" thread where this probably could have been asked so I apologize for starting a new thread for this question.
The S3 does not follow the same method of recovery as the S2. Kernels do not come with a recovery. You have to install the recovery manually. You can either use zips found in the recovery's thread or you can utilize goo manager to install TWRP (menu>install openscript recovery) or ROM manager to install CWM.

Twrp is similar to 4ext and cwm. Use it the same way.
So does this mean that 4EXT is an accepted recovery console for the I747? I have been reading a ton and I see so many people flashing with CWM and no one has mentioned 4EXT. Just wanting to make sure before taking the dive with my favorite recovery software.
Thanks!

Honestly you will be better off with TWRP. I have completely stopped using CWM due to several issues it was involved in. So far not a single issue with TWRP. It's a quick download and install from the market, install the recovery from the app, and your good as gold.
1 thing to remember, as the devices get newer, some methods that you may be used to doing such as 4EXT may no longer be valid anymore.
Got it. I appreciate the quick reply and the heads up. Much props!
Forget about 4ext, it's no longer relevant now that you have the S3. Pick either CWM or TWRP (I recommend TWRP) and move on.

As others have suggested, go with TWRP. Used 4ext when I had my Inspire and loved it. However, check 4ext out on the Play Store and you'll find the S3 isn't listed as compatible. Tried CWM on the S3, and had issues, so switched to twrp and haven't looked back.

[Q] CWM recovery doesnt work

I followed the instructions from android (dot) sc (slash) how-to-install-cwm-recovery-on-att-samsung-galaxy-note-2
Odin says it Passes.
When I boot into recovery the Samsung Note logo comes on and then the screen goes blank.
The regular booting works fine.
I reloaded the stock recovery and that works as well.
I tried it with Heimdall on Linux with the same results, looks like it works but the custom recovery doesn't come up..
I read that AT&T is starting to lock their bootloaders. This is a brand new Note 2, is it possible that the bootloader is already locked? Is there a way for me to check?
In any case, if I can't get a custom recovery, can you point me to a tutorial on updating a custom ROM without a custom recovery.
I've already rooted the device and can use adb and am comfortable with the command line.
Thanks
Sim
You can try TWRP recovery. Found HERE:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1981198
And if your rooted then you should be able to get it on there. Thru goo manger app.

Use Twrp...and re-root using CF auto root just prior to pushing Twrp via Odin. ..g

TWRP worked fine
TWRP worked fine.
I did it through goo manager and everything went very smooth.
The only thing I had to do manually was find a different version of gapps then was available in goo manager.
When installing that version, I got an endless loop.
