New SG2 owner - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Went from an Evo 3d to an Iphone 4s, now trying out the Epic Touch. I got my Evo 3d rooted and was flashing roms and fidgeting all the time with it. I had to get help to get that phone rooted as I wasn't too familiar with the territory. Same thing here, I can flash just fine, download a rom, put on root, open and run through recovery and badda bing badda bam. The actual task of getting root, and doing it the best way is a bit still out there for me. So if anyone wants to help, step by step, through a chat system like AIM or Windows Live, obtain root and spend a little time helping me, I'll paypal you some beer money. I will need to know what to download, what to install, what order things go in. I could simply follow the steps and videos but I know I will get lost and want someone to chat with who has done this time and time again. Thanks!
I would probably steer to flashing this rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1363071
Maybe flash a new kernal, which really isn't that big a deal to me....if someone suggest one then I probably would.
I've been out of the Android scene for so long!

Hello! Enjoy your stay.
You'll want to watch and subscribe to qbking77's videos as he's the go to guy for all things E4GT related.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v7pWjmKCsoc
That's the video for how to root your phone if you're on EL29. Then you can install custom recovery by heading over to dev section, and find the autoroot package sticky by sfhub.
Once you are more experienced with rooting, I suggest that you try some of the AOSP ICS roms such as CM9, Codename Android, and AOKP. If you do want to try them out, use EL26 CWM to flash them or you might brick your device.
There are custom kernels made by Steady Hawkin for Gingerbread, and none so far for ICS because of the rampant bricking issue.
Have fun, and read, read, read!
EDIT: Also, once you start flashing some ICS themed roms, you might want some appropriately inverted themed apps. You can head over to http://www.rujelus22.com/evo/ or http://rootzwiki.com/topic/15092-invertedtotally-inverted-apps-4-1-update-404-appsgoogle-voice-too/ In my opinion, they hurt your eyes less in the dark and save battery due to the AMOLED screen.
To install just use root explorer to extract the zips, copy over to system/app, change permissions to what the other apks look like, and reboot.

[Q] Moving from WM6.5 to Epic 4G, suggestion?

Let me first tell you about myself.
1. I'm a geek.
2. I don't like programming that much, so I avoid it. I learn stuff to get by, but yes I avoid it. I have access to both XP & Linux, running it as a PDC server at home along w/ VPN server (ClearOS w/ modified bridge OpenVPN ).
Some background about myself that may help you answered my question, or pointing in the right correct direction. (no middle finger to the right.) And here is past experience on mobile device.
I have used Nokia 770 and N800, fun to hack back then but it's pretty useless now. I had SERO 500 , which I just recently upgraded to SERO Premium 500. I have been using HTC TP2 w/ Energy ROM. It has been good, granted TP2 is an older phone w/ older Qualcomm CPU. Energy ROM did help a lot, along w/ a few tweak, I manage to keep the battery to last pretty long and upon boot up I got about 70% memory left to use. So, I'm not exactly new to the custom ROM myself. That said, I'm new to the Android phone and custom ROM. I have been reading in the past 2 weeks deciding between Epic 4G and EVO Shift 4G. Well, I end up w/ Epic 4G as a final choice. Already ordered the phone, but still waiting for it. So, I don't have Epic 4G as off right now. But I would like to start playing w/ it once I get a hold of it. That's why I end up here asking for some wisdom in this forum.
After doing some research, I think I think get the basic concept of flashing custom ROM on a new Epic phone. If I got it wrong, let me know.
prep step 0. get USB drivers.
1. root it, 2 steps root?
2. install CWM3 for recovery.
3. flash new ROM, appearance each chef have difference instruction for the install. That's where it start confusing me.
Few things that are unclear to me, should I update PRL prior to rooting it and flash new ROM or after? Or should I even put DK28 on it prior to start rooting it? I'm guessing a no on 2nd one, as it's not necessary.
Now, rough question, what ROM is close in term of the way it package that most closed to the Energy ROM. I'm leaning toward either Nebula or Bonsai. Since Epic is only on Sprint only, I'm sure some of you have use TP2 or might have even used Energy ROM in the past. If you haven't, I'm sure you know where to look for reference. Again, what I very looking for is a Froyo ROM(if not Gingerbread) that's clean, lean, snappy and stable. In fact I don't even care if the Samsung TouchWiz is totally removed. I even think I might like Touch Flo interface better, but I suppose I won't have it. I think I have read enough to know where to find the TouchWiz apk(s) and remove it, so that's not a big problem.
Welcome to android your steps are 1.get drivers 2 dl one click root plus cwm. Once you have it rooted with cwm you can start flashing. If you want to go to the froyo leak then flash the upgrade first then start the root process. If you go with froyo, which I love it and I have bonsai rom and it works perfect, you have some choices when rooting. If you want to stay with the stock Rfs filing system use the one click with cwm v2.5. If you want to run ext4filing system then run the one click root with cwm3. This new clockwork will convert your filing system to ext4 for you. My setup is in my sig and is my favorite. It's up to you to pick the rom you like the best. Make sure before you root turn your USB debugging on. Good luck and welcome to android.
In addition to what was posted, Nrgz is a great chef. I used his stuff for quite some time when I had my TP2.
That being said.. WinMo and Android are 2 different animals.
I think you'll find that you're going to flash each ROM and play with it for a few days to determine which one you prefer.
They are all very nice in their own right. Some of us have favs. The neat thing about android vs WinMo is that after you flash a ROM in Winmo, it's a big pain in the ass to set your device back up (if you weren't using custom scripts).. with android, it's much much easier and can be completed within a couple minutes.
I think you'll enjoy that aspect of it.
Welcome to Android
I'm making the same transition as you, long live the TP2. I followed the how-to recommended by the wiki, but a lot of that is actually a waste of time at this point, except as a learning experience. The steps that actually got me ROMed (I'm assuming you'll pick an Ext4/DK28 ROM:
1. install 32-bit drivers on Windows
2. put phone into debug, connect
3. flash DK28 to phone using ODIN
4. copy zip for ROM of choice to root of sdcard
5. run cwm3 to change file system, root device
6. flash with custom ROM while in recovery
From what I understand, only steps 4 and 6 will have to be repeated when trying other ROMs. Wifi tethering isn't working for me on ViperROM, so I think I'll try something else.

Noob Rooted Galaxy S phone

There's a whole load of good stuff in the Android Themes & Applications section. Some of the threads will contain instructions on how to apply the goodies to your phone.
Have fun!
You can use rom manager if you want to try some custom roms. I was hesitant at first... didn't want to mess up my phone, and didn't want to lose my data, but now I love it. I just used it to get the froyo leak onto my fascinate. It's also easy with rom manager to install themes.

Ox's noob corner (work in progress)- everything you need to get started right here

Well everyone the dinc2 community has treated me well but I have moved on to the htc rezound please do not hesitate to still pm questions though I'm hoping I can find a volunteer to take over this thread. this q and a section will be a work in progress as well. If anyone has suggestions for questions that you think should be here, by all means let me know.
Q: I think I bricked my phone what should I do?
A: calm down 99 percent of the time people think they are bricked they really aren't. If your device shows any sign of life your chances are good that your ok. If you can access hboot by holding volume down and power while the device is off your in good shape you can still flash the ruu and get back to stock.
Q: I put the ruu on my sdcard but hboot cannot find it
A: when flashing anything from hboot it must be named exactly PG32IMG.zip and yes it is case sensitive. Also if you have to rename the file, if doing it on a computer be careful because a computer will automatically add a .zip to the end of it and hboot will not recognize it.
Q: I flashed a kernel a now my "insert issue here" don't work
A: did you flash an aosp kernel on a sense Rom or vice versa? If so things will not work as they should always make sure the kernel you are flashing is compatible with your Rom.
Q: will sense apps and widgets work on aosp roms?
A: short answer is no
Q: my phone is stuck in a bootloop what should I do?
A: some time in your flashing career you will encounter a bootloop, there are a couple of ways to fix this number one is start adb (which every Rom flasher should have set up in my opinion) and type adb reboot recovery and hit enter then once in recovery you can reflash and try again. Your other option is to pop the battery out, put it back in then hold volume down and power to get into the bootloader once there select recovery. If you can not navigate in the bootloader that means the PG32IMG.zip is on your sdcard still. Remove that and it will let you navigate the bootloader. If you have no way to remove that .zip pop out your sdcard boot into bootloader select recovery then pop your card back in.
Q: what is the best Rom out there?
A: there is none its all a matter of opinion. Just a warning, don't start a new thread asking this question you will be flamed into oblivion and the mods will lock it. I've seen it a million times
Q: I just flashed an aosp Rom (miui, cm7, omgb) why is my earpiece volume so low?
A: as of now this is a known issue for our aosp Roms, the tiamat kernel is said to fix it.
this is the start of my q and a and it is far from complete, if you think there is something important that is not here by all means let me know.
Ok guys here is some basic terms you should be familiar with before rooting and flashing
1. Flash or flashing, basically just means to install something from recovery or bootloader
2. Rom- the word rom is kind of an outdated term (read only memory) because we can in fact write to it, nonetheless a rom in the simplest of terms is basically your operating system.
3. Kernel- the kernel is the heart of your o.s. It basically communicates with your software and hardware, wifi and processor speed are a few examples of things your kernel controls among many other things. Sense kernels should not be used on aosp roms and vice versa things will not work as they should.
4. Overclocking- to increase your processors stock speed to increase performance
5. Underclocking- pretty self explanatory underclocking is used to help save battery
6. Undervolting- to decrease your voltage to save battery. Undervolting is a slightly controversial topic some people swear by it and others say it can actually decrease your battery life. Undervolting can cause stability issues so educateyourself before attempting.
7. Radio- basically the software that works with your hardware to give you your signal and mobile network, on other phones they are also reffered to as modems
8. Aosp- android open source project, aosp roms are roms built from the original google source code, some examples of these are cm7, miui, omgb, these are typically lightweight roms that you can customize yourself, they are preffered by many users because of the great battery life and performance
9. Sense roms- these are roms based on an original htc rom, sense is th ui that htc adds to android, sense roms have many nice apps and widgets, and usually are packed with eyecandy, however many people say that sense it a resource hog and needs a lot more ram to run than aosp roms
10. Port- a port is a rom or theme originally made for another device but made to work with ours
11. Wipe- it is usually recommended to wipe before flashing a rom, but not always mandatory, read the forum of the rom your flashing to see if a wipe is recommended or not. Some roms will wipe data automatically some will not. A wipe is just basically giving you a clean start like when you first got the device and is done in the recovery menu. When in doubt wipe, you will run into less issues.
12. Ruu- an ruu is a stock signed rom that is flashed in hboot, an ruu is your get out of jail free card, if you mess your phone up too bad an ruu will bring your device back to its stock state
13. Hboot_ this is basically your bootloader from hboot you can enter recovery, do a factory reset, and flash an ruu, a radio, and other things not flashable in recovery
there is some more basic definitions that I overlooked, see post 28 by artvandelay440
How about some basic definitions? Sense, AOSP, Rosie, kernel, recovery, md5 sum, etc.
How, when, and why to wipe.
How to perform a battery calibration.
Don't restore system data when moving to a different ROM or updating to a new framework.

yes good idea. Definitely will do. I also plan to add a miscellaneous goodies section including commonly used apps like miui camera. And links to kernels and other good stuff. Like I said this thread is a wip I just wanted to get a start on it tonight. I'm not at home now and I'm doing this on my touchpad so its quite tedious. Will work on it a lot more tomorrow. Thanks for the input
Love this idea for a thread. I know this will be a stop that noobs and even seasoned vets will make. Thanks for taking the time to put something like this together!
Thanks for setting this up!
It's really helpful to us newcomers, who inevitably ask a question that will annoy the seasoned members. There is so much info buried in threads with many pages that it's hard to read it all and not overlook something along the way.
Having all the start-up info, and maybe a list of well-known bugs for each rom, in one place will be great!
Woot! Got a sticky!

+1 For the best idea ever. Great job.
I think you should spice it up a bit I'll add more later lol. Good thread guys.
For the first post you can start it like this:
Rooting your phone (Achieving S-OFF)
Please read and re-read rivera82falcons execellent write up located here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1219246
Flashing a custom ROM to your device
Please read AgalychnisCallidryas thread on how to manually flash a ROM located here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1263756
Please note that you don't need to back up every user app with titanium backup, some people only like to backup apps that have data, such as games.
It's also important not to back up system apps (apps that came with the phone). Restoring those apps may cause system failure.
Setting up ADB
Nephron has a full set of instructions on how to set up ADB, you can find the thread here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=532719
Finding the ROM that's right for you
This is one of those threads that may be sensitive to some. I find that finding the best ROM depends on your tastes. When ROMs are released they generally have bugs. Some may be deal breakers, like not having MMS working, or something small like not having a particular tweak installed or an application force closing. You really have to download the ROM and take it for a test drive.
Read through the threads on feedback. Generally, if you see the same bug being mentioned it probably is plagued through every ROM install.
GSM functionality of the phone is important to some, but not most. Generally, if you download a ROM that's based off of the original ROM it should work fine. But if you are downloading a port from another device expect that feature not to work.
Don't be afraid to flash a ROM. The worst that can happen is it will throw your phone into a soft brick (bootloop). Simple way to fix it is restore a backup you made or flash a ROM that you know is solid.
Creating a backup (nandroid) of your device
Your phone at this point must be rooted, and the ROM you are running has to be rooted.
Get Rom Manager from the market. Install the latest recovery that it prompts you with - If you've already installed clockwork mod then proceed.
In ROM Manager:
1. Scroll down to Backup Current ROM
2. Name it what you like, like backup_09192011
3. Let it back up. The more data you have the longer it takes.
In recovery: (You cannot assign names in recovery)
1. Boot into recovery
2. Go to backup and restore
3. Choose backup
To restore a nandroid backup - Wiping data, cache, and dalvik isn't necessary.
1. Boot into recovery
2. Go to backup and restore
3. Choose restore
Useful Applications:
http://androidcommander.com/ great for deleting or replacing apps on the fly. Windows interface, simple to use.
Here are a few more additions:
Replacement camera app for those that don't like to use the stock camera that came with CM 7 or other AOSP Roms.
This Click me Miui camera app works great, just remember to go into the camera settings after installing and select 8mp as the picture size. It can be installed as either a separate camera app or as a replacement to the stock camera.
To install as a add on, just install the apk as a you would any other app. Download to your sd card and install.
To replace the stock camera app, rename the downloaded apk to "camera" (without the quotes) and using root explorer (make sure and select R/W) move the renamed apk to system/app and replace the stock camera apk (first though, make a copy of the stock camera app and add .bak onto the end and store this copy on your sd card, I make a folder named storage so I know where my .bak files are at).
Now that the camera apk is in the system/app folder, the permissions and ownership will need to be changed.
Long press on the camera apk and in the popup menu select permissions,
You will want to change it to look like this:
Read Write Execute
Owner x x
Group x
Others x
After changing the permissions, scroll to the bottom of the popup menu and select "change owner"
You will want to change the ownership so that it reads"
Owner 0 - root
group 0 - root
Select OK and your done. Reboot and you will know have the Miui camera installed.

More to follow later.

Maybe the how to on hulu? I dont think many use it...but it won't take up too much space right and the how to for renting movies from the market (posted somewhere as changing permissions to mu from Su temporarily)
But seriously this is a great job. I didn't expect all this lol. I'm glad we are trying to save our community.
I came to the Eris and it already had a community. We built this one and it needed some leadership. Way to take charge bro
Unlike the Eris all our devs would rather have their own site and that's ok. But ppl haven't been mature about it. I like the devs like tazz and the way he does things. Just the way I am lol.

yes very good point knipp I want this thread to be informative and educational not a hand holding experience. I have no problem helping anyone that is willing to help themselves but it makes my skin crawl when I see a post that says “wanna root someone please give me detailed instructions" and I have seen a lot of them.

Installing a Theme?

So, I recently updated my phone using QBKing77's guide [2.3.4 Gingerbread eh17]
Now, i was thinking about adding a theme to my phone but what i wanted to know was, after i install a theme, how would i be able to get back to my old theme? [gingerbread theme] if i didnt like the new one
Well, the way you would do it is by making a nandroid backup of your current setup (cwm > backup/restore > backup), and if you didn't like the theme you installed, you would wipe everything and restore your nandroid backup.
The only problem though that scares some people is that not all gingerbread nandroid backups restore correctly (sometimes they don't boot up)
Also, I don't believe EH17 has a 100% stock theme, so you'd have to be sure whether or not you wanted to flash a theme for EH17.
Not trying to scare you, just saying it can be a hassle if you don't end out liking it.
Lol i suppose i could wait and enjoy my new Gingerbread Rom... haha.
Thanks for the help, i do plan on flashing soon so i might as well ask now,
1. what is nandroid?
2. what is this.... (cwm > backup/restore > backup), <<<
Im fairly very extremely new to the whole living life on the edge with my epic

Well, I should ask, when you updated your phone, does it contain the SuperUser app? In other words, is it actually rooted?
If it is, than you will most likely have ClockWorkMod, an alternative recovery in which you can flash roms, themes, make/restore backups, and more.
I would highly recommend looking at a few more videos by Qbking about that. (for example, look up a video on how he flashes a theme or rom, and see what he does to help you get a better of understanding how flashing actually works.)
However, if Superuser is not present, then you lack both Superuser and Clockworkmod. I'm not sure if there is a one-click root for the Gingerbread leak, so if you aren't rooted, you'll most likely have to Odin a rooted version of EH17.
I assume you are rooted though, so ignore the last paragraph if that doesn't apply.
I hope this helps!
Btw, "nandroid" is just the way people refer to a backup/restore in cwm. No big deal.
P.S. Take this slowly. You do not want to rush and make a mistake. Believe me, I know it's exciting, but there are risks when doing this, so make sure you re-read everything and get a basic understanding of everything before you jump ahead.

There's a thanks button, ya know...lol. I'm just messin'
And no problem. If you have any more questions, just PM me. I'm pretty active during the day I get home from school.
So i was talking to QBKing77 and he said after adding a theme, if i wanted to go back to gingerbread i just have to re-flash [basically re-install gingerbread to my phone the same way i did the first time] Now i just have to find a nice theme.

Yeah, that is true. The only reason why I didn't mention that is because I believe you would have to lose all your data when re-flashing? Not sure if you have to do a factory reset but I would assume you would.
For EH17 themes, I'd recommend maddoggin's theme that comes with the 6 lockscreen mod (there are screenshots but they are old and the theme has been re-done a bit)

Another fav of mine would probably be shane's honeycomb theme. It's absolutely amazing.

Honeycomb looks nice, i think i might just stick to stock for now though. Im trying to find a good clock/weather widget and some fun apps/widgets to use when im bored =/
P.S noticed you're from chicago! DA BEARS.

Brand new SGS S II. Where do i start?

As the title states today i got my sgs s II. impressed with it so far but i want to start flashing new roms. Came from the sgs 4g i am familiar with cwm, odin and superoneclick but looking at roms here i see that there are ICS roms that have special requirements as to flashing (read the megamix install instructions) and i don't want to brick or otherwise mess this phone up. if anyone can guide in the right direction where to start and the differences in the roms on this forum id really appreciate it.
The ICS ROM's are not completely stable yet, they are based off the Skyrocket ICS leak. But it's the same as your old phone, Odin CWM then flash a rom. No need to root if you're going to flash a custom rom, they are already rooted. The only requirement for ICS is flashing the super wipe zip from the dev section before flashing the rom. Just make sure you follow instructions in the OP word for word, and you will be fine. But READ READ READ 3x before jumping in.

It's hard to brick. Use Odin, flash something with root, and use CWM beyond that. Generally, ROM features are listed in the threads where they're posted. You might start out by reading through some threads.
thx for the info i was a little confused about the ics was looking thru and the tuesday rom looks very nice. again thank you for the info and for putting up with a noob.
I agree with what everyone has said.
For what it's worth:
Eugene's Macnut is my daily driver. I try them all, and I am always going back to it. Fantastic battery life, great performance, and everything just works. The custom driver is fantastic--already highly undervolted.
If you don't care about wi-fi calling, his CM7 is fantastic.
If you want ICS, they are all basically the same right now, with a few tweaks / mods / themeing here or there.
Yaldak's vanilla update will be the next ICS that I try (none are quite stable enough for me yet...and no wifi calling) whenever he releases it.
Also--if you haven't already, just CWM via Odin, and you can be done. I never even booted into the stock version when I got the phone.
any working links for the cwm? looking thru posts cant find one that will open.

I recently rooted and started flashing my GS2 as well as my GF's G2x. For the GS2, I've tried Tuesday's BluRay. It's really nice..very fast and smooth, great looking themes for it too, but I found it was a bit too limited, and eventually had to load another launcher and reconfigure some of the sounds. I also really missed the time on the status bar (M&S has since put out a patch that added the clock to one of the themes, unfortunately it wasn't the theme I preferred). I ran with that for a couple days and have since flashed Foxstar. I really like Foxstar's included utilities and tools, but it was a bit laggy coming out of the lockscreen and scrolling through pages. I've read that loading faux's kernel over the included synergy helps a lot. Will probably do that in a bit and run with foxstar for a few days to test out performance and battery life. But I'm getting itchy fingers and might try one of the CM7 ROMs or Juggernaut soon. I'm making Nandroids of each install I've done (as well as the stock), and eventually I'll pick one to run as a daily driver.
I recommend Eugene's next CM7 update the R3. I've been running with it since R1 and it's superb.
With the massive customizations it's hard to go back to GB or the alpha like ICS's out there. Although the latter have great qualities.
does the cm7 have the tv out function via the mhl cable?
Since you're new here. The few times a gs2 was bricked is because of:
1. flash a rom different galaxy s2 rom as in the international, the att, sprint, old vibrant. We can flash the skyrocket roms though.
2. Using odin to flash a stock rom incorrectly. i.e. using a pit file, battery falls out etc
3. the Phone just DIES OUT. Believe it or not, some people's phone just shuts off and won't turn on again.
But other than that, our phone is pretty hard to brick if you're not stupid.
T989 is a beast and is very hard to brick if you have a lil bit of root knowledge...everything ive learned has been thru google , trial and error and the bad ass devs here at xda..if u search for it you will find the answers to all your questions
